Goblin feud

if players use diplomacy against the fueding goblins do they still earn the xp?

Liberty's Edge

Yes. They've still overcome the challenge.

ShadowcatX is right. As long as they successfully manage to deal with the encounter (whether that be via combat, diplomacy, or even stealth!), they still get the XP.

Silver Crusade

It's actually one of the most valuable things new players need to know too. Xp can come from many places other than just killing enemies, and you don't have to kill things to overcome them.

You mean by sneaking past them right? Just wanting to clarify.

Yes, that's what I mean. :-)

If they manage to avoid an encounter by sneaking past, creating a distraction, or whatever, I'd give them the XP. If they just ended up going the other way and never having to deal with the encounter at all, though, I probably would not.

The decision of whether or not an encoounter has been "overcome" is up to you as the GM, but keep an open mind about it. Your plyers can be pretty clever in their solutions and you don't want to shut that down by forcing them to handle it only one or two ways.

To add to the conversation, I gave my group extra XP (200, I think) for solving the encounter peacefully. I wanted to reinforce the idea that it's a valid option. Plus I wanted to offset the loss of loot that they would have gotten had they gotten physical.
