Hirelings wages and level.

Rules Questions

There really isn't a whole lot of information about this, and searching on the forums where a lot of suggestions, but I didn't see any solid rulings.

To hire a hireling is ether 1sp a day or 3sp a day. Does this include what level they are on? Is there a modifier for level * wage or something? How do hirelings effect your exp, say, if your group hired one or two hireling warriors to help them in combat?

Yes, it is listed in the book that level modifies it.

They don't affect XP (they don't gain any) after all you bought them so they are basically gear at that point.

It is 1 sp/level if untrained.
It is 3 sp/level if trained.
Trained includes mercenary warriors, masons, craftsmen, cooks, scribes, teamsters, and other trained hireling.
Untrained includes: laborers, maids, and other menial workers.

What about hiring NPCs that have heroic class levels?

As a GM I rule that NPCs with PC class levels aren't generally available for hire. There might be people with PC class levels, but you will have to find them and they're probably going to have to be made friendly and offer to help you out.

You can't just go down to the market and hire a wizard to adventure with you.

And even if you could, they would probably be level 3 or less. 90% of the population is level 3 or less and almost exclusively NPC classes.

Mind you, outside of combat NPCs are almost as potent as PCs - provided they get to specialise. The only thing holding them back is lack of funds.

If the group needed to hire a temp with PC levels, how much would it be?

Basically up to the GM, or up to the party.

As GM, I'd give the party three choices of NPCs to join them:

A Lawful Neutral Character that was expensive, but would do anything for the party, for money. They'd probably demand an equal share of the loot for the main quest (or the quest they were hired for), and they might demand additional payment for any unrelated tasks they had to undertake in the process. They'd also expect the party to reimburse them for any expenses (like food, material components for spells, and so forth). And they'd leave the party if it became apparent, at any point, that the Party was not making money or just not going to pay this NPC anymore.

A character with a specific goal that simply coinsides with the player party's goal, but remains their own goal. This goal may or may not be told to the players, depending if the goal's secrecy was important to achieving the goal. They'd need basic expenses covered, but they'd be mostly free. Except they wouldn't always go along with the party's descisions if they conflicted with the NPC's goal. Basically, it would be adding another player to the party, except the GM would control this player character.

Last, a character that needs the party's protection. In this case, character brings trouble, but is basically free. Perhaps the character has an active bounty, or their blood is needed for some sacifice, or they are just a very easily recognized famous person in a manner that isn't very helpful for the party's quest. In any case, the presence of the character would make certain encounters more challenging and may require additional side quests, but they don't actually cost anything beyond basic expenses.

I'd give the players a choice of character class or character role, and a choice from the above 3 NPC personalities, and then I'd make the character and pick the specifics for the personalities. That way the players would know what they were getting into, but I still have full control over creating my NPC.
