Starting Characters

Kingmaker

I have decided to give the crew the option to play goblinoid characters if the entire party agrees to it. I know i will have some balancing issues for encounter creation, especially with a couple of them as Bugbears.

The question i have for you fine folks is, "is there a really good reason, from the module design, that will prevent this concept from working."
I am sure a goblin orineted kingdom will be pretty scary for neighboring communites which will force them into conflict, i don't see that as an issue...any comments, ideas...thanks.

I have still some time before we start playing, we're finishing a different campaign right now, so i can make adjustments still.

I appreciate your help

I guess it all boils down to your interpretation of the kingdoms involved. I don't personally see the Swordlords of Restov hiring a group of goblinoid creatures to clear out a segment of the Stolen Lands and I don't see them afterwards providing support to start a colony/nation. The motivations for utilizing a group of that race seem suspect to me.

It also begs the issue of "who will live there?"

In the default assumption, you have a lot of humans moving there as they immigrate from Brevoy, and later the River Kingdoms. Many of which with the backing of Restov and a streak of Rostlandic cultural pride (escape the crown of Brevoy and the oppression of Surtova and all that jazz). This justifies your cities growing.

If you are a goblin party, will you create a goblin kingdom? If so, where are all those goblins coming from? By the setting as written, there are no goblins in that corner of the world. But your GM can change that. However, even if he changes that, there's still the question of "where are you going to get ALL THOSE goblins?" there's only so many living in little camps and huts in the wilderness, and it takes a LOT of people to make a city and then an army. Also, I see a city of goblins quickly turning to anarchy. I don't see them undertaking sweeping architectural projects and massive farming enterprises. I see them as flinging dead toads at each other.

And the idea of goblins founding a city that humans move into... I don't see it working.

- my 2 cents

But do whatever makes sense for your group!

Sovereign Court

A goblin strong enough to defeat the Stag Lord and his ilk is probably strong enough to forge a kingdom. He could also be trying to create a safe haven for other goblins. He could build to try to impress the other kingdoms that he is "civilized" so as to prevent an early destructive war. As to where all of these goblins come from, keep in mind the huge prolific rate of goblins. I admit I haven't studied Glorian goblins, but other goblins are like rats and can produce a huge number in a short time. That is the threat of goblins, individually very weak, but there is never only one or two. I believe they invented the term horde.

As to whether Restov would use goblinoids, there I have no answer. Maybe some powerful, corrupt noble believes he can control, or eventually takeover himself. It could add a whole new subplot later on. IN the end, if your players want to do it, and you are OK with it, go with it. Have fun. That is what the game is for.

One way to do it is for the Goblins to have been the minions of some corrupt noble, wizard, or monster that dies. Then the Goblins start doing a "Weekend at Bernie's" scam to keep intimidating the locals.

The Exchange

It would take a bit of massage to make it work, but other than the starting premise I can't see too many issues.

As long as the entire kingdom regularly gathers around to listen to their charismatic leader sing a robust version of "New York New York" this will work out fine.
