In the new D&D, they have an alternative to starting gold. It involves two or 3 different groups of choices of what equipment you start with. What do you think of this system? Any interest in doing something similar in Pathfinder?

Yup; first time I saw a system like this was back in the day for B4: The Lost City; they had "adventuring kits" that you could buy. We put similar kits into "Adventurer's Armory" I believe, but they're also in Ultimate Equipment.

I think it's a really handy way to get directly into the game without the minute of picking gear... but as someone who enjoys creating quirky characters who have affectations and strange unusual items that are more for roleplaying purposes, I much prefer the flexibility of being able to customize your character's gear down to the last piece of string.

1)If she wanted a planar realm how would she gain one?

1) By completing the transition from quasi deity to demigod, I suppose, which involves no rules we have yet or are likely to publish. Such an event would be handled in the context of a significant in-world event like an Adventure Path.

2) Some worship her. Some might seek her protection or support. Some might want to get favors from her. Some might be in love/lust with her. Some might fear her and seek to appease her. Basically... all the reasons that any one person might willingly decide to work for someone else.

So you guys have said that Iron Gods is staying on Golarion and never leaving it. But I have an inkling: will we be "visiting" other places, perhaps Androffa, in hologram rooms in Divinity Drive? Or at the very least, holograms that depict what went horribly wrong on the ship? If not I'm most definitely adding that in as GM. Be very insightful for the android in my party AND the human who won't know he's Androffan until the final book. Because how else is the party gonna know how the ship crashed, and know Unity's story?
Aw man, the wonders of holographic exposition!

There will be ways...

Spoiler:
...to learn about what caused the ship to crash, yes... and they're going to be... unusual.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Depends on the type of story we want to tell.

I feel like I"m repeating that... but it's the truth. We do not really want to nail down game rules for these types of things, and that includes even standardizing how they work. They should be individually crafted story elements.

Hello James!

I have question in regards to the AC Bonus' granted by a Monk and by the new ACG:Sacred Fist Archetype for the Warpriest.

Do they stack or do they overlap?

Monk
AC Bonus (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four monk levels thereafter, up to a maximum of +5 at 20th level.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Sacred Fist Warpriest
AC Bonus (Su): A deity protects her sacred fist as long as he is unarmored and unencumbered. A sacred fist adds his Wisdom modifier (minimum 0) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a sacred fist gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels thereafter (to a maximum of +5 at 20th level). These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the sacred fist is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Please limit your lists to 10 or fewer questions... which also means 10 or fewer sentences. Much longer than that and it becomes increasingly difficult for me to answer questions since that much text has a hard time fitting on my screen all at once, making it difficult to reference and respond to.

1) What would happen would depend on your GM. IF I were your GM, I wouldn't allow that character concept in the campaign in the first place due to it breaking the theme and feel of the type of campaign.

2) Not really... but his church leaders might. Like all deities and demigods, Moloch doesn't micormanage his worshipers.

3) Sounds fine to me.

4) Hobgoblins are not redeemed often at all. That's what makes a story like Kurat's so interesting and compelling... it's NOT the norm. Not even remotely close to the norm.

5) At that point, you're drifting so far from what minotaurs are in my view and in Golarion that I'd just say ignore your race entirely and pick a deity that matches the character's personality and alignment.

6) Being able to teleport at will is a huge advantage, yes. It's one of the things that creatures in the game can do that entirely alters the nature of mass combat, and is one of the countless reasons why mass combat in the game is so awkward and weird, and why I'm so hesitant to do much more with this type of story in future APs at all.

7) Lawful neutral.

8) Yes.

9) Goblin slaves.

10) Not a lot. There wouldn't be enough to form a troop or anything like that. Hobgoblin alchemists tend to be loners and single-case specialists.

11) Specific deities are not called out by name in Monster Codex since we tried hard to keep the book world-neutral.

I cannot imagine anything other than these bonuses overlapping. Stacking would be too ridiculous.

But that said, like all rulebook questions, it's better asked over there than here.

James, do you think it's reasonable for somebody creating a Half-Elf who grew up poor and uneducated and never met her elven parent to decide their character cannot speak Elven despite the rules saying Half-Elves can, both because it makes sense and because the idea of a Half-Elf who gets either pitied or ridiculed by Elves because she knows so little about her heritage is interesting?

If the setting were Golarion, would ridicule or pity be common Elven reactions to a Half-Elf who knows so little about Elves?

Absolutely reasonable.

And no, ridicule would not be common. Pity moreso.

Do you think there's a sort of metaphorical line where fan art or fiction is no longer respectful to the original work and its creators? Where it's evident that the intent of the piece is not an homage, extrapolation or alternative view of the work, but merely the titillation of the fan and the people who share that fan's specific predilection?

I know different creators likely have different stances on this issue, but I'm sort of wondering more as a fan than as a creator, if I'm a hypocrite because I don't select the fanart I look at and fanfictions I read by how much I appreciate the works they're based on, but on how they manage to incorporate a particular "fanservice" that appeals to me.

I do not. Titillation and fan service is just as legitimate as any other sort of fan art or fiction. Whether or not any one person is offended by it is up to them, and has nothing to do with "legitimacy" as far as I'm concerned. (For the record, I'm not one to be offended by it.)

There's certainly some fan art/fiction that's heads and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality and skill and beauty (the erotic stuff included), but the fan art/fiction that I don't like is more a case of art being subjective than anything to do with respect or disrespect. In fact, I would say that all of the Pathfinder fan art/fiction I've seen is born from respect for what we produce.

Erotic fan art/fiction is just as valid and entertaining as any other genre. And in fact, one might argue, this category of fan art/fiction is more important than others because it's one of the few categories of art that Paizo DOESN'T produce.

To be fair, the +1 per four level bonuses of the Monk and Sacred Fist would stack, because the Monk is untyped and the Sacred Fist is deflection. However, they both go off their respective Monk/Sacred Fist levels. So a Monk 10/Sacred Fist 10 would have +2 from Monk and +2 deflection from Sacred Fist, where as a pure level 20 would have a +5 bonus. The wisdom bonus thing doesn't stack because it's stacking ability scores. It'd be a different case if one granted a different bonus, but they both use the exact same language.

The key does not have an "official explanation" yet.

It's a typo. Should be a profane bonus.

That said... I don't think the game should have both of those bonus types. There should just be a "sacred" bonus type, since the word "sacred" doesn't actually imply any sort of morality or ethics...

Hello Again,

Also while I am on the topic of that book. Do you thing it is possible that the professor was mad and his story is not as it seems? He seems to know just a little to much about everything related the eldar things for a short trip into there city.

Hello hello!

I know rules questions isn't what you'd preferred to be asked, but I wanted to ask: one of my players for Iron Gods, an android wizard, wants to switch to an alchemist and take the prestige class technomancer. I'm a bit confused, since alchemists don't "cast" spells, so does that mean they cannot take the prestige class? If so, do you think I should allow the player to take the prestige class anyway, since they seem to fit perfectly together thematically?

None. I don't really get into archetypes that much, frankly. Partially cause I don't know what kind I might or might not want till I know the game I'm making a character for—I tend to build characters for the story, and if that suggests an archetype... I choose then.

In Lovecraft's stories, yes, the mi-go and the abominable snowmen are the same creatures. This is not the case in Pathfinder.

And nope... I think the reason the professor know so much about things is because of a combination of the fact that he's really smart (he's a professor) and because the story itself is framed as a manuscript he writes long after he returns, so he can in theory augment the writing of the manuscript with fact checking and research.

As written, they can't really take the class because they don't cast spells, but it won't break anything by bending those rules to allow it.

That said... the class itself is, in world, all about the Technic League. It, and the way it interacts with technology, makes things play out different story-wise... so consider that too before you give permission.

Hi James, related to the above question, have you listened to any Lovecraft audio books? I like David McCallum reading Rats in the Walls. I almost crapped my pants listening to The Dunwich Horror on headphones in the middle of the night (when I was younger).

How easy/hard would it be for you to pull the strings to arrange an AP in the flavor of Temple of Elemental Evil or The Lost Temple of Tharizdun written by (In No Particular Order):

1. Greg A. Vaughan (His patients be damned, there are PCs to be killed!!)
2. Richard Pett
3. Neil Spicer
4. Brandon Hodge
5. Mike Shel

James, i have an incident in my group and it has caused one of my players to want to betray everyone in the party and kill them all. he feels its because the group betrayed him, but hes the only one who sees it that way. how do i deal with this person without making the PERSON resent me.

P.S. i want to remove him from the game altogether, like have his character die or something but he wants to plot revenge WHAT DO!?!?

Hello Again,

I was listing to the audio book of At the Mountains of Madness and in it it says "the migo or the abominable snowmen" so does this mean that the migo are the abominable snowmen or was that a list of monsters.

Also while I am on the topic of that book. Do you thing it is possible that the professor was mad and his story is not as it seems? He seems to know just a little to much about everything related the eldar things for a short trip into there city.

Hi James, related to the above question, have you listened to any Lovecraft audio books? I like David McCallum reading Rats in the Walls. I almost crapped my pants listening to The Dunwich Horror on headphones in the middle of the night (when I was younger).

Yup! I've listened to a LOT of them. My favorite is Thomas Fuller's Shadow over Innsmouth. The Dark Adventure Radio Theater ones put out by HPLHS are excellent too.

Seeing as how Greg and Brandon and Neil are currently SUPER BUSY and/or taking a writing break... I wouldn't except anything along these lines anytime soon.

Take the player aside and explain to him that it wasn't a betrayal, and try to find out why the player feels that it was. You might find the solution in there. Try to explain to the player that the game isn't about PVP, and try to come up with a solution to fix what the PC lost in a way that has his character regain it in a less internally destructive way.

If that doesn't work, the only real solution, alas, is to ask the player to leave the group, because the player is being disruptive. That might make the person resent you, of course, but that's a MUCH BETTER solution than just killing his character off, because the player will just make a new character who's even more bitter.

Another possible solution, but not one I recommend in this case...

Spoiler:
Let the players play out the betrayal. This only works if your group is really mature and if all the players are capable of separating themselves from their characters, and their characters from any FUTURE characters other players might play. If you opt for this, do it all at the table, no die rolls behind screens, and let the chips fall where they may. It sounds like this solution would be a terrible and destructive one for your particular situation, though, since it sounds like the player who feels betrayed is already overreacting and faced with having to fight against many others at the table, he won't have a chance and will feel like you set his character up for a no-win situation. Even if, in game, that'd be the same end result.

James, I'm taking my first kick at the cat for this thread! :)

I've been researching Tian Xia a fair bit recently, and I was wondering if there's any additional information on the fall of Lung Wa? For such a momentous event (one of the biggest surrounding the death of Aroden), there isn't much information.

I'm guessing this is left intentionally vague, but I'm looking at running a new game set around the fall of Lung Wa and generationally grow the PCs in a game akin to Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

My current plan is to have the PCs be away from the capital and hear dozens of conflicting rumors about what exactly happened. Does that sound about right for the dissolution, or did everyone have a sense of what was happening when Lung Wa fell?

What's in Jade Regent and Dragon Empires Gazetteer is pretty much all we've said about the fall of Lung Wa so far. There's not much information about it because we haven't done much with Lung Wa or central Tian Xia yet is all... we might do more some day, but until we do, yes, it was left intentionally vague because we didn't have the time or resources to detail it much more than we already had.

Lung Wa fell quite a while ago, in any event, which means that there's absolutely time to hear lots of conflicting rumors or historical notes.

As written, they can't really take the class because they don't cast spells, but it won't break anything by bending those rules to allow it.

That said... the class itself is, in world, all about the Technic League. It, and the way it interacts with technology, makes things play out different story-wise... so consider that too before you give permission.

So in world technomancers learn their craft from the Technic League? Hmm...May have to tweak my Iron Gods character idea a bit. Was originally planning on a native Kellid who, after being changed by a tech encounter decides that his native ways and the tech don't need to be in opposition and together can be even greater. If the technomancers basically "the league's PrC" I think he'd be better as a rebel leaguer, kinda like Khonir.

This "straddles the line between two worlds but greater than both" theme seems to be becoming a pattern for me, isn't it?

In world a technomancer who did NOT learn their trade from the Technic League (or from someone who was once part of the league but fled) would be a one-of-a-kind unique individual. Which is actually kind of where PCs thrive.

Its been said that Golarion's Asmodeus and Lamashtu are the same beings as Earth's Asmodeus and Lamashtu. Are Golarion's Dagon (the demon lord) the same as Earth's Dagon (or to be more specific, Lovecraft's Dagon)?

No.

Mythological Dagon, Lovecraft's Dagon, and Golarion's Dagon are 3 different things. One of those three inspired the other two to exist, but which one it is depends on your frame of reference.

Do all three Dagons "exist" in the Golarion cosmos?

How much "uniqueness" can a character have before you'd decide they're "Mary Sues" that wouldn't fit in the campaign. I'm always concerned when I create a character that I won't be accepted because, even if it's only a first level character, the character's too much of a speshul widdle snowfwake that seems unrealistic for the setting, or is like a Drizzt clone or something?

Nope. Just the Demon Lord.
