You know, it was once pointed out that if you actually stop and look at what Sauron did, all you really need is a 12th level Cleric.

You should read this article, Calibrating Your Expectations, for some more information. The comments below the article are quite interesting.

The books don't chronicle everything Sauron did, and therefore he certainly could have done more than what a 12th level cleric could do.

More to the point... Sauron was the big bad guy of the entire trilogy. Whether or not what he did in the book is nothing more than a 12th level cleric could do... he's mythic. And were I running a Lord of the Rings type game and wanted Sauron to be that 12th level cleric... I'd still give him 10 mythic tiers, and then I'd have the game itself cap at 10th level for PCs so that in order to face Sauron, they'd have to have mythic tiers themselves.

How would you suggest one to go about combining "Curse of the Crimson Throne" and "Second Darkness" into one game? Or is Mixing APs a bad idea?

It's generally a bad idea, since the APs have strong storylines. For this particular case, I'd do this:

Run the initial encounter with Lamm from Crimson Throne, but set that section in Riddleport.

Run parts 1 and 2 as written for Second Darkness, then have the PCs have to flee Riddleport for some reason. They end up in Korvosa.

Run the rest of book 1 of Crimson Throne, then book 2 and book 3. When the PCs flee Korvosa, I'd have them flee northwest to the Mierani Forest, following the trail of drow bad guys who have been working with Illeosa.

I'd then run book 3 of Second Darkness. They'd learn that Illeosa was joining forces with the drow, and then the PCs would go on book 4 to find out what she's doing with the drow.

Then when the PCs emerge from book 4 of Second Darkness, they'd go on to book 5 of Second Darkness, which I would combine with book 4 of Crimson Throne and rewrite those two significantly to bolster each other into a brand new plot that reveals Allevrah and Illeosa to be in cahoots for some greater deed.

At that point, the PCs would have to go to Scarwall to recover the magic sword that can defeat those two.

After that, I'd let them pick which book 6 to tackle first. Whoever they went after 2nd would be the REAL boss, while the 1st one would be revealed to be the minion.

There would, of course, be some encounter revisions, but running that game as a slow XP track game would help.

Just registered to ask a question on Spell Perfection and various feats.

Normally a Fireball does 1d6 damage per caster level up to a maximum of 10d6 damage. An Intensified Fireball can do up to 15d6 damage. If I have Spell Perfection (Fireball), would my Intensified Fireballs have a maximum damage of 15d6 or 20d6? That is, does Spell Perfection apply to the bonus applied by Intensified Spell?

Now, say that I've multiclassed and I'm a 5th level caster with Spell Specialization (Fireball) and Spell Perfection (Fireball). Would my Fireballs do 7d6 or 9d6 damage? That is, does Spell Perfection apply to the caster level bonus given by Spell Specialization?

Same example as last time, but with a Varisian Tattoo (Evocation) instead of Spell Specialization (Fireball). Would my Fireballs do 6d6 or 7d6 damage? That is, does Spell Perfection apply to the caster level bonus given by Varisian Tattoo?

Do you have any thoughts on how to play out the contract sequence? Should I have a legal document printed out or just rely on linguistics and diplomacy checks? Would a Contract Devil appear as a senior partner in a Law Firm when he's conducting negotiations?

Yup; check out Curse of the Crimson Throne—particularly the sixth book in that series, which is where we first invented the contract devil and used it as a key plot element in the adventure.

Having a densely written legal contract written out as a handout is a good idea. We have a sample one in the aforementioned book 6 of Crimson throne. But just because you have a real handout for the players to read, don't ignore their character's Linguistics and Diplomacy checks—those skills should be used for the PCs to gain hints that the players might miss.

A contract devil appearing as a senior partner in a law firm makes sense, but the concept of a law firm is kind of anachronistic for Golarion. Instead having the devil appear as a barrister or town official makes sense.

I'm very close to finishing the first one. I've only got the last boss to kill in the main game, and I'm about 1/3 the way through the expansion, which I want to finish before defeating the main boss.

I've never read the Silmarillion, and have no plans to, so I'm not sure who Melkor is.

That said, I do know WHAT the Silmarillion is, and statting up Sauron, Gandalf, or similar beings of power is absolutely what the mythic rules are for.

Melkor was a being of power as far above Sauron as the latter was above ordinary mortals, being a peer of the Valar (which are as close to dieties as you can get) Sauron was like his chief angel before they both turned. He's mentioned in one or more passages in LOTR, but that's about it, since his one time fellow dieties bound him and tossed him into the Dark place you don't come back from.

The First and Second Ages was essentially a time of far greater power all around than the Third which which LOTR is set in.

We've not yet revealed much about how Mordant Spire elves interact with the alternate racial traits from the ARG. Arcane Focus, Envoy, Eternal Grudge, and Spirit of the Waters all make sense for them.

Some day, I hope we'll have the chance to do more about the various races of Golarion, but that day's still a fair bit off in the hazy future.

And once a thread crosses the 500 page mark (I'd argue that once it crosses the 10 page mark), closing it and reopening a new thread is kind of counter-intuitive. And would frustrate me, since there'd be an element of "now I have to start all over" to it.

Will we ever get stats for them if they do exist?

Also

2. is Tsathoggua or any of his servitors (Voormis, Spawn of Tsathoggua) part of Golarion?

1) Nope; the Tcho-tchos were invented, I believe, by August Derleth, and unlike Lovecraft, Derleth's inventions are not yet in the public domain. Furthermore, the Tcho-tchos are pretty established as being natives of Earth anyway. If we DID do them up in Golarion, they'd be a human ethnicity that wouldn't have different stat mods, but would probably have a few alternate traits.

2) Nope; he was created by Clark Ashton Smith, I believe, and like the Tcho-tchos, aren't yet in the public domain.

What Lazar said. Also, Melkor was known as Morgoth by most for the majority of the Simarillion. If you remember from the extended edition of the Fellowship of the Rings, Legolas tells Galadriel that they encountered a Balrog of Morgoth in Moria. Morgoth, you see, was responsible for taking spirits of fire and corrupting their essence into the demons known as Balrogs. He also was the one that created the race of dragons!

Merisiel wasn't one of my characters. Ameiko was.

I no longer have the art order for Merisiel handy, but it was something along the lines of:

"The iconic rogue is a female elf. She wears leather armor, has lots of knives, and is a few inches taller than a human. She has white hair and long pointed ears that point up along the side of her head, not outward."

Question about the Sweettalkers of Kaer Maga: If they sew their mouths shut, how do they eat?

Hi James,

1. Do the Tcho-Tcho from the Mythos exist in Golarion? Would they be a separate humanoid race, or just a race of people. Some of the stories featuring them sometimes make them out just as an ethnicity, and others make them out as something not really part of Homo sapiens.

You're right about #1, James, but on #2 the situation is more ambiguous. CAS's works published before 1923 are in the public domain. The CAS estate, however, asks for permission, which is usually granted, for use in publications released for profit. Some of CAS's works are currently copyrighted by Arkham House. The "Tale of Satampra Zeiros" was published in 1931 (and written in 1929), and is the first CAS mention of Tsathoggua, so it's still under copyright- though he was mentioned by Lovecraft in the Whisperer in Darkness (1930), which is not in copyright... Frog God, however, features a demon lord called... Tsathogga. Note spelling.

CAS's description of Tsathoggua, being fully fleshed out in the "Seven Geases" (1932), will enter the public domain in 2023. But the name itself exists in a murky zone since it first saw print in a now copyright-free story.

1. Could Sorshen afford a demiplane of 10,000 10-ft cubes? If so then she'd have a place to stash her harem (though they're probably bonkers after 10,000 years).

2. A variation of what I asked before (which I've doing since I was a kid): Why wouldn't Sorshen just order a minion to cast polymorph any object on a favored playmate rather than go through the expense of fleshwarping?

3. When I asked "Would a Sorshen AP be like Vampire?" I wasn't clear with what I meant, you could think Vampire means one thing while I think it means another. To clarify, would a Sorshen AP have a "vampire court," with complex social dynamics and everyone having their own plots?

4. How much would Sorshen want to rebuild her city? Or is she okay with Korvosa's slummy state?

5. The Sense Motive DC for being magically, is that only when a victim is acting under orders or does it apply even when she can go about her usual routine?

6. How would Sorshen deal with the post-Earthfall races? Specifically orcs, gnomes, dwarves, drow, and especially dark folk.

7. What's Sorshen relationship with devils as opposed to demons?

8. What would it take to get a succubus to work for you without planar binding? By "work" I mean staying focused on whatever (presumably open-ended and sex-related) task she's given rather than frolic about and cause collateral damage.

9. Why does Nocticula have magma hooves?

10. Are there any questions you get sick of seeing over and over? Given my obsessive nature, I'm worried mine are among them.

The Calistrian myth of the Blooded, is this originated from misconceptions of the Runelords? Or was there really such a land?

Confirm / Deny: this thread need to be closed then remade with some rules.

Deny.

"Some rules" is precisely what this thread DOESN'T need. It's best when it's an open forum where anyone can ask anything they want. Whether or not it's a question I want to answer, or whether or not it's a question that should be instead asked on the rules forums is something I'm comfortable making decisions on as the need arises.

And once a thread crosses the 500 page mark (I'd argue that once it crosses the 10 page mark), closing it and reopening a new thread is kind of counter-intuitive. And would frustrate me, since there'd be an element of "now I have to start all over" to it.

No thanks.

K, sorry...

No worries! Is all good! :-)

Why are the demons in the Bestiaries listed under their more evocative "Abyssal" names (babau, kalavakus, etc.) but the devils are listed under mundane English names (barbed devil, contract devil, etc.)?
