The San Diego Chargers have also released condolences to the family. According to the Union-Tribune, he committed suicide.

It's true and sad. Lots of speculation on why he did it. Reports say it was due to brain damage from football. Remember he drove his SUV off a cliff a couple of years ago...claiming he fell asleep...

Seau was a fan-favorite among the Patriots faithful as well. Just about every organization he was connected with have released statements already. The loss of someone who meant that much to so many is tragic.

Dark Archive

R.I.P Junior Seau a loss no doubt about it. Gave back to the community as well as being well liked. Sad, perhaps this might shine a brighter light on the problems of concussion and what it can do long term, just too bad it takes such a well known and liked person to do so.

Not much going on in football world except for Wes Welker signing his francise tag :) Yup looking forward to football season.

Yes, soon we will have an air attack every bit as devastating as the laser some other, lesser Darth used in that movie of his......

Excellent oh Hooded One we can't wait to see your next super bowl victory.

Scarab Sages

Football time is here again! Woot! Looking forward to this season - Both pro and college.

For the pros, I look forward to seeing what the Saints can do. Also look forward to seeing how Peyton Manning fares in Denver. All in all, I think it promises to be an interesting season.

For college, I hope my LSU Tigers can come back from that rather pathetic showing the put forth in the National Championship game. I kind of wish the playoff system was already in effect, though.

For here in central Ohio, it's the Urban Renewal program.

Ok, My football watching so far this season has been woefully inadequate. I've been hearing off and on that these replacement refs suck big nuts? Is that a fair assessment? Just watching this SF/GB game it does seem like they might be missing some stuff....

Dark Archive

Well it seems like the defense might be getting a pass at least in the Titans and Patriots game I watched. I have heard and I am not certain if this is true or not so take it for a grain of salt. But supposedly the refs have been told to keep the flags in their pocket unless they are 100% sure of a call. Sure seemed that way in the Patriots game, the secondary was getting away with alot more than I have seen in the past.

In the Arizona Seahawks game they game the Seahawks an extra timeout at the end of the game while it did not help them in particular ... it could have. I think the NFL is being greedy here and they should pay the professional refs their money, my own opinion.

The refs did miss 3 potential PI calls on the Patriots in that game, but only one was blatant (McCourty's on the opening drive), the other two would have been ticky-tack calls if they were flagged.

Only watched the Broncs/Steelers game this weekend, but they just weren't as smooth. Also, the announcers are annoying in how much they talk about the replacement refs.

The refs are important, but good refereeing should almost be invisible. These replacements are anything but.

Liberty's Edge

Well looks like Oregon State is going to be romanticising Saturday's game against Wisconsin for the next ten years or so.

woo

I once again has high hopes for my Detroit Lions

The 3 teams that look the best to me after week one are the Ravens, the 49ers, and the Patriots (in that order, btw). The Ravens dismantled a decent team that didn't look like it made many mistakes (at least in the 1rst half I watched), it was just them outclassing thier opponents in every phase of the game. The 49ers defeated a very good team on the road, and the Patriots held a former rushing champion to about one foot per carry.

Of course, that is only week one, and we won't have a good picture of most teams until after week 4.

I've been hearing all morning about the latest controversy with the replacement refs from last night's Green Bay game. It seems bit hypocritical to me that now Goodell seems to be unconcerned with the integrity of the game.

I'm not a huge Goodell fan, but I don't think he really has a whole lot to do with it. If the owners wanted him to get a deal done, I'm sure he would.

After last night though... I think that time may come a little sooner.

That won't ease the pain of last night.

Greenbay fan?

The screwjob Green Bay got is bad enough that Vikings fan are openly admitting it.

Monday morning I thought the officiating couldn't get any worse than the Pats/Ravens game (which set a record for first downs via penalty) but that thought only lasted until that same night.

But when you are dealing with refs who were fired from the Lingerie League for incompetence the results are to be expected.

I think the fact that the player's were able to force the NFL back to the negotiating table during the lockout may have something to do with this. Roger is desperate to look strong in a labor dispute after that, and the officials had the misfortune of thier contracts running out next. But that is just my opinion on the debac...er....matter.

Liberty's Edge

I think a lot of this is amplified because they are replacement refs. There have been a number of game changing bad calls over the years, and a lot of bad calls that don't get the publicity. The players, coaches, and media are focusing on everything these refs do.

Are they not as good as the regular guys? Oh, yes. Do the owners need to just bite the bullet and pay the real guys? Yes.

The biggest issue isn't bad calls, though, it's player safety. I have heard several defensive players state flat out they're going to push the limits and see what the replacement guys do, as they do not respect the amateurs at all. Those same players would keep it in check with the pro refs out there, as they do have that respect for their authority and knowledge of the game. The owners and Godeell pay lip service to player safety, but until they pay the pros and get competent guys back in the officiating job, lip service is all it is.

Greenbay fan?

I'm a fan of the game of Football and last night hurt. It was a joke, an insult to the players that put their bodies on the line every single week. To put them at risk like that after the constant trumpeting about player safety to now have things like incompetent refs missing call after call after call when it comes to things like late hits.

Refs blatantly missed cheap shots in that Hawks/Greenbay game. Chop blocking was going on all over the field and in other games. It's an embarrassment

Even more of an embarrassment is the way the NFL pretends like we're too stupid to know what really happened on that play. That statement about "yeah it was pass interference, but other than that the call was a-okay" was a joke. We love the NFL but eventually, a breaking point will come.

If you put money on these games, it might of already come.

I rarely watch MNF. I prefer college football.

I give no f**ks who won.

But that was a bad call. Jennings had the ball first. Tate was lucky to get a hand on it.

The amount the official refs are holding out for is a drop in the bucket compared to the profit margin.

Goodell needs to stop paying lip service to his masters (the owners) and get out in front of this debacle.

From what I've been hearing (and maybe I'm listening to too much office chatter), the breakdown between the real refs and the NFL is that the owners want to do away with the ref's pension plan. I heard someone say that most of these guys are retired to begin with (or at least have other jobs), and that the salary they already make is pretty good (about $149,000). So a breakdown over the pension plan thing seems like a reasonable explanation.

I imagine Oregon's game against Arizona last weekend might keep folks warm a few days :)

Hooray! Now we can go back to hating the normal refs! Deal done.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah!

Congrats to Drew Brees for breaking Johnny Unitas' record of most consecutive games with a TD pass.

Number 2......

Scarab Sages

I keep seeing billboards advertising Rutgers versus Temple. Didn't realize they had football teams. ;)

I don't know how the f+*! we got to number 2.

Scarab Sages

Cuz LSU decided to be nice to you guys and lose. You know, since Tebow is sucking nuts these days.....

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

Scarab Sages

That's what I figured. Plus, it's kinda density. One SEC team falls out, and another rises to take its place. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Me, I know what I want to see this season. I want to see everybody in the B1G Leaders division without the word "State" in their school name to fail to get six wins in the regular season. Wisconsin has to tank pretty hard to do it at this point, but it's mathematically possible.

Then, whomever it is that winds up representing the Leaders in the B1G Championship, I want them to manage to beat the Legends team.

That's right, a team with only five regular season wins as the B1G BCS AQ team, as the B1G team in the Rose Bowl.

EXTRA BONUS HAPPY: The Ohio Bobcats are the only bowl-eligible team to finish the season undefeated, while Notre Dame meets the rule requirement for an automatic BCS bowl bid.

I see the Steelers borrowed their pants from a rune giant this week.

Poor Gators.

My son caught an over the shoulder pass and made his 1 and only touchdown in flag football yesterday though.

Scarab Sages

Tough break for LSU yesterday. But congrats to Bama on their continued dominance.

Also, an impressive victory for Oregon. I think I'm actually looking forward to the possibility they may get to lose to Bama in the national championship game.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Congrats to my Longhorns for actually playing defense for a change and getting a win over Texas Tech.

Scarab Sages

Good weekend of football! LSU won! Saints won! Bama lost! Falcons lost!

Scarab Sages

Finally took a look at the latest rankings. Bama fell to #4. Weird that Notre Dame is #3 in the nation. Also weird that the top SEC teams were only defeated by other SEC teams. So an SEC team still has a shot at the National Championship, which is cool.

But, hell, even if the SEC misses out on the big game this year, it should still be an interesting match up, considering the 3 top ranked teams. I may have to start cheering for the Fighting Irish to go all the way.

Scarab Sages

Hot damn! What an interesting weekend for college ball. Kansas State and Oregon both go down, leaving Notre Dame as the #1 ranked team in the country. All they have to do is win against USC, and the Fighting Irish will be in the big game!

Unfortunately for them, it looks like they'll have to go against one of two SEC teams - Bama or Georgia.

I dunno about that.

There's three options, realistically for ND's opponent, assuming that my beloved Irish defeat the fiendish, despicable, and utterly vile Trojans.

1 - Oregon.

They have a ROUGH game coming up against O-State. If they lose, Stanford wins the PAC12 North, and they are out. If they win, they play UCLA in the title game and probably have a good shot of being ranked #2.

2 - K-State

They are (imho) going to lose to Texas, unfortunately. If they win close, they don't have the benefit of going to a BIG12 title game to solidify a claim to #2. Plus, unlike Oregon, who lost close to a good team, K-State got stomped by Baylor... unless a lot of things line up, I think they are out of it,.

3 - Alabama

I think, and this is a ridiculous thing to say, but they are going to lose the Iron Bowl. Auburn has stunk all year, but they still have a ridiculous level of talent and they have nothing to play for but pride. This makes them really dangerous, particularly in a tight rivalry. More likely Alabama beats the snot out of the Tiger and the Tide marches onto Atlanta to face Georgia. I dunno how the tie breaker between LSU and Bama works out if Bama loses to Auburn...

4 - Georgia

They have a shot, just a shot, at beating Alabama. They recruit ridiculous (like Bama) and have just as much raw talent as anyone else. But... they need to beat Alabama AND Oregon has to lose to UCLA to have a chance. If they beat Bama, (and, of course, beat G-Tech this weekend) then I think they have a better claim at #2 than K-State.

We'll see. Should be interesting.

GO IRISH!

Scarab Sages

True, the scenarios are crazy. No matter who else gets it, though, I don't see ND losing to the fiendish, despicable, and utterly vile Trojans (I like that phrase and will try to remember to use it henceforth.

Although I'm not sure about Oregen or K-State being able to move ahead of Bama or Georgia.

K-State loss to an unranked team. So unless Bama and Georgia both end up as 2 loss teams (not unpossible) they'll each have the advantage over K-State.

With Oregon it's a bit more dicey. I think a one loss Oregon might be able to move ahead of a one loss Georgia, but I doubt they could do the same to a one loss Bama, just based off strength of schedule.

And although I would laugh to see Auburn beat Bama, I just don't see it happening.

Still, I think it's gonna be cool. I wonder how many sports afficionados and news casters are salivating over a classic Notre Dame/Bama matchup? Not to mention whichever network shows the game.

And, I agree....

....GO IRISH!

My Texans beat Diane's Jaguars. That was an interesting game. The Broncos are doing pretty well. I can't recall are season were the Texans and the Broncos both did well.

Oregon winning the PAC12 can top an SEC Champion Georgia if there is justice yet remaining in this Republic. They are a ridiculously good team.

Personally, I want to see ND v. Georgia, as my step father went to Athens and I went to South Bend and it would be a lot of fun in our house. K-State might have a 1 in 8 shot of making the title game at this point - they were humiliated by Baylor, and if Baylor can stomp them, just imagine what the Longhorns can do now that they know how to break K-State. A similar situation awaits Oregon... both teams lost to squads that exposed their respective weaknesses and are now facing down better athletes, better coaches, and all the pressure is on them to perform.

Going to be a good weekend.
