I've been DMing Derek's Sunday group, and could potentially do shorter sessions on a weeknight as well (say, 6 pm - 8:30 pm), if there was sufficient interest. In fact, we were talking Sunday about getting more than one game going, if the number of players increases (we've got 6 and counting now, which I think makes Derek's apartment the largest gaming venue in Houston, population-wise, outside of Rice University!).

Personally, I prefer smaller groups (1-3 players), with emphasis on world- and character-building rather than on dungeon crawling.

Well I have played D&D 3rd edition and 3.5 and some of the White Wolf games like Vampire and their newer game Exalted. I am not experienced though and highly enjoy more character development.

Not quite true. U of H in San Jac hosts lots of gaming also. Plus, the owner of this http://www.ultimategamingtable.org/ lives in Houston, and I'm sure he gets plenty of requests to play at his house. :)

It's very cool to see a Houston gamer thread on Paizo! I've got a group of seven down in Pearland playing 4e Eberron.

There must be a lot of gamers in town, because the 3rd and 4th edition books always seem to sell well in the bookstores.

Have fun!

Argh! Where were those people a few years ago, when we were desperately looking for players? Feast or famine, I tell ye!

Liberty's Edge

Well, one of us was "indisposed" a few years ago...

Btw, you serious about a weekday game? I would SO run that for y'all if you'd like :)

What do you think of teaching me how to play Shadowrun during the weekday game? At least it would be different. Just a question, I would enjoy getting together any day you guys select. If you'll have me in the game.

Liberty's Edge

Oooohhhh....Shadowrun....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Sure -- maybe Wed pm, shorter sessions, smaller group. I'd even be willing to host. Homebrew campaigns, maybe, with house rules galore (D-hoppers and Shadow reality). Beer trumps dice. Character concept trumps class rules. No dolls allowed. Stuff like that.

DEFINITELY no dolls...

Besides, I don't have the new "Malibu Barbie Tomb of Horrors" Dwarven Forge dungeon molds...

Glad to see a group comming together in Houston. Me and the wife had alot of fun the couple of times we made it down Kirth. Maybe i should try to find a group up here in the Boston area. Id love to get in on some Shadowrun action. Havent played that since 1st ed. Kind of feeling burnt on fantasy so id actually like to get in on any cyberpunk/sci-fi style gaming. Anyhow...goodluck with things guys and have fun!

I'm down for Wednesdays, just waiting to get the "go" signal from Kirth. I lent him my Shadowrun 4e book tonight to look over, so we may mix it up a bit and play d&d and shadowrun.

"Wednesday" is a weird word. Never looks right...

I thought I would jump in here. There are a couple of groups on the north side of town (Woodlands/spring). I will be running my campaign when I get back from China. Looking at a Sept 2009 start date, (~labor day weekend), and this will be up in the woodlands.

Yea I know. Okay...just let me know. You think this might be something we have to wait until after the holidays to start up? Either way is fine for me. I wont be here next week but otherwise I am available on Wednesday nights if that time fits. :) Even got the futons. ^_^ YEA!!

After the holidays I should know what my weeknight schedule should be (except for the 0-2 weeks/month I'm out of town).

With 2+ people added (and not affecting a possible weekday Shadowrun game), we might could alternate Pathfinder every other week: one week Runelords or Second Darkness, one week Crimison Throne or whatever, with slightly overlapping player lists to keep the total numbers below 8 each week?

Derek: I like the Shadowrun base mechanics; the setting is straight out of Charles deLint's Svaha; I should be ready to start playing soon.

Fun.. I know nothing about Shadowrun but I'll play.. :P

I want to play Pathfinder more though. All this talk of sides of Houston.. if anyone on the east side.. I'm over on that side.. but I am one of Derek's core players over there on the west side.. until he throws me out.. which i don't see happening.

I need more games to play.. grr... once a week just isn't doing it for me now.. lol

I wonder what the gang sign for that is?

3 fingers for the middle side? What about the times I've thrown the middle one finger at the GM? ok it was only one once but it enhanced the realism... lol

I am posting this here and am in no way associated with the store. That being said, at Owlcon I received a flier for a FLGS called Asgard Games here in Houston, TX. I just got back from talking to one of the owners about the possibility of holding Pathfinder Society Game Days once a month. Will Pagani was very interested in what I had to say about my experiences at Owlcon and with playing the Beta Playtest. He is willing to let HoustonDerek and I have a table once a month to promote Pathfinder and the Society. I have no firm confirmation as to when our first one will be. I will post once the date has been confirmed. For those of you in the Houston area their website is AsgardGames(dot)net. My impression is that the owner is very interested in getting to know about Paizo and the Pathfinder line.

Just my 2 cp.

If you are interested in the above post, please check the Pathfinder Society Grand Lodge heading. Look for "A Pathfinder Society Game Day in Houston, TX".

Liberty's Edge

Bump. We're looking for fresh meat if anyone's interested :)

And I'm still anxious to get a weeknight game going...

As HD and I have talked, when he gets his schedule settled we should be setting up a night for a week day game. Are you thinking of using the Classless system?

If there's interest. Or I'd be happy to play (more or less) straight Pathfinder as well, if not. Either way is fine by me!

Jess, You have my e-mail, no? Or message me on Facebook.

Yeah, mine, too.

OK, so game room (at my place) reserved for Wednesday, 7/29/09, at 6 pm. Chairs reserved for houstonderek, China (if she has interest & can make it), silverhair, and jess door (if she wants one). Others possibly negotiable by request.

Campaign will be freeform Golarion and/or homebrew, with significant planar travel starting early.

Let the games begin!

Liberty's Edge

Next week sounds good to me :)

What are the character creation guidlines?

houstonderek wrote:

Argh! Wrong date! I meant 9/22/09 (I'll probably be on-site next week). Let's use Beta rules unless final rules are clear enough from previews to supercede them. Any 3.5 non-core stuff acceptable if approved by DM and other players. Stats 4d6, drop the lowest, six times, in any order -- then apply racial adjustments. Just be honest, because let's face it, if you're out to "win," I'd know by now, and I wouldn't have invited you!

A simple question, I was talking to HD and he mentioned that you might have meant 8/22/09. I presume you wrote what you meant, 9/22/09. Please set my mind at ease. I am interested in meeting again. What have we need of as far as classes, any ideas yet? You know my preferences. I can play either of the divine casters that I usually do. You can email me any House Rules I need to know about.

Ditto. I like playing most anything, so I'm more than happy to fill party holes if that's what's needed.

Silverhair: My head was so full of numbers yesterday (multitasking plane, car, and hotel reservations while posting is a BAD IDEA) that I somehow managed to list them all incorrectly.

The long and short of it is that Derek says tomorrow is out, and I probably can't do it next week. So a potential start date, if it works for everyone else, is

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

(I spelled it out with words to avoid flubbing the months again, and hopefully I'll at least get the year correct!). We could meet again on August 12th, probably have to skip the 19th (I may be in the desert that week), and hopefully re-convene on the 26th. If any dates change I'll let everyone know in advance via email.

RE: Classes and such, I usually prefer to DM groups that are slightly heavier on the stealth and/or swashbuckling/diplomacy end, and a lot less into the "Hulk smash! Me no speak Common!" style, but I can work around almost anything -- unless people insist on playing thri-kreens and stuff (I'm highly biased towards humanoid PCs). Anyone can play any core class they like, or any non-core class if the group OK's it: I personally put no absolute restrictions on options, but anything outside the core rules gets presented to the group and we all decide if we like it (Derek already said he'll vote against most of the "fire blast" and "walk on the ceiling" stuff from ToB). So if you want to play a Beguiler with Races of Suck substitution levels, moving into Prestige Bard, with feats from Dragon magazine, that's probably fine... as long as it gets presented and agreed upon.

What I do ask is that everyone roll up at least two (2) characters, preferrably from different places. Each week, we'll pick which combination of people we want to play, and hopefully create a more realistic campaign than the "there is only 1 group of heroes in the world" thing. (Also, if someone dies or gets lost or imprisoned, it's easier to continue that way).

Finally, the initial setting is subject to vote:
(A) Golarion;
(B) My homebrew setting (highly "3 Musketeers" inspired); or
(C) A new homebrew world we'll make up as we go along.

(I anticipate a fair amount of movement between worlds, so any or all of these might pop up later on.)

Sovereign Court

Hmm. I have always wanted to try a swashbuckling campaign. :D I even had a very fun Eberron character I drew up:

Boring Character Drawing

A changeling that didn't hide or really use her nature much. She was a scout/thief acrobat type character, with lots of ability to fly through the rigging of a ship and generally annoy those attacking her.

Thief Acrobatty stuffs!

I gave her two handaxes so she could use them to climb on board enemy ships from the water. :)

But then we never played the oceangoing campaign after all. :(

Very nice technique with the skin and especially the cloth folds (which I always struggle with)... but I have to ask: your Eberron character was an 8-year-old? ;P

P.S. I like to see people put some work into their characters... good show. I look forward to having you at the game table!

Yeah, the proportions on the initial sketch are pretty badly off. Her head's waaaay too big,her body waaaay too small. But I think the other one is pretty cool. :D

I draw lots of my characters.

The Exchange

That second drawing is pretty cool, Jess.

As I said I can take the Divine caster need. In a previous campaign that never went anywhere I started playing a Ninja 20. I thought the Ninja was an interesting class from Complete Adventurer, or possibly a Scout. The Ninja would possibly be a human or maybe a Dwarf? The Scout could be a Half-elf or even my go-to race (Half-orc). As for playing a warrior type I was just looking at the Goliath from Races of Stone. I don't have any idea what would have to be changed for the conversion to Pathfinder. Of course, it all depends on what is needed for the party.

Jess, I am envious. I wish I could draw.

EDIT: I keep thinking of more to add to this posting. I have also created a Dwarf Trapmaster/Thief in the past. That was cool to play.

silverhair2008 wrote:

I'd argue that nothing would need to be changed. Goliaths are an example of the Splatbook power creep that the Pathfinder base classes and races were redesigned to keep up with.

silverhair2008 wrote:

Basic drawing is more a matter of training and endless practice than of innate talent.

It's at the Rembrandt level that natural talent is really indispensible.

Yeah, not that good. Just a fun hobby. :) It's kinda stupid, but drawing the character often gives me a handle on them. :D

Okay, I rolled 4d6 dropped the lowest 6 times.

I got 10, 8, 9, 10, 10, 13.

So....any rules for allowing rerolls when you absolutely have crappy rolls? Otherwise I guess I can play a bard with those rolls. At least then I can help other players do stuff....

Jess Door wrote:

That character goes on to a productive life as a peasant, allowing you to focus on the potential creation of some other would-be hero... (in short, abandon those rolls and make a new set!)

Sovereign Court

Wow...this does not bode well for my character's luck, but...

Set #2: 14, 7, 11, 9, 8, 10
Set #3: 13, 10, 9, 8, 8, 10
Set #4: 16, 13, 15, 12, 14, 10

I'd prefer to stick with set #4 (duh! :P) but let me know. :)

(...I think random.org's integer generator is trying to kill me...)

Regarding houserules, I have a few that I'd like to present for serious consideration. Remember, all things are subject to vote; I'm a facilitator and a creative consultant, not a dictator!

SKILLS. I have a lot of gripes with the Beta skills. I'd like to propose that we try some or even all of the following:

  • Knowledge (nature) becomes part of Survival.
  • Knowledge (the planes) and Knowledge (religion) merge.
  • Knowledge (warfare) is introduced for tactical assessments, military history, operation of siege engines, interpretation of military insignia, etc.
  • Knowledge (lore) is introduced to cover ancient history, lost civilizations, legendary figures, magical beasts, riddle contests, etc.
  • Intimidate and Sense Motive become part of Bluff.
  • Knowledge (local) and Gather Information become Streetwise.
  • Knowledge (dungeoneering) and dwarves' stonecunning get merged with Profession (mining) to form a collective "underground stuff" skill to be named.
  • Perform (acting) includes oratory, comedy, disguise, and all that kind of stuff.
  • Perform (music) works like linguistics: pick up new instruments or forms as you add ranks.
  • Perform (dance) works like Perform (music).
  • With only 3 Perform skills, bardic performance in the final rules will need to be tweaked.
  • Craft (fine arts) includes forgery.
  • Disable Device applies to all mechanical stuff, including figuring out how to operate secret doors. Spellcraft is used for disabling magic traps, and is a class skill for rogues. Use Magic Device becomes part of Spellcraft.

    COMBAT.

  • Swashbuckling isn't possible if people are stuck in one place. I propose that anyone can "trade" an iterative attack for 10 feet of tactical movement at will.
  • The "ready action" rules suck. I propose that attacks can be held, at your option, for use any time before your next turn as immediate actions.
  • If you combine these, you have the possibility of an 11th level fighter attacking once, waiting, and then charging 10 feet and attacking a caster who just stepped into the room and is about to cast a spell, for example.

    Opinions are welcome!

Go with set 4. Unless you want to play Derek's cleric from our Runelords game, whom he valiantly tried to get killed at every opportunity.

No problem with those. How about perform? Rolled into Profession(entertainer) or whatever? (I'm actually thinking of a swashbuckling barbarian, inspired by a comment on the forums how Inigo Montoya was really a swashbuckling barbarian, and we even got to see him rage! :D - anyway, the point of that comment was I'm not planning atm on playing a bard, so further clarification on performance changes on the bard class may not be needed, if perform goes away as a skill.)

    Kirth Gersen wrote:

These sound cool! Will take some getting used to, but still very neat. Only question - does taking that attack shift your place in initiative order. Fun, mobile and dynamic combat, but might be a bit more of a pain to DM. ;)

    Jess Door wrote:

Using the list I posted, you'd have "Perform (acting)" to cover all the comedy and oratory and disguise and other shenanigans -- not "Profession (entertainer)" -- although that really then becomes a matter of semantics, I suppose! (Except for the fact that Peform would use your Cha modifier.)

"Profession" skills, IMO, should be strictly limited to things that are not crafts or performances or anything else. There is no need for a Profession (soldier) skill if there's a Knowledge (warfare) skill, for example; and there's no Profession (chef) because cooking is a craft.

I don't mind a bit of extra work if it makes for a more enjoyable game experience! Anyway, no, your initiative wouldn't change -- it would work just like the Hold Action now, except that you can hold individual attacks and decide later on how to deploy them.

    Jess Door wrote:

P.S. Derek and I almost always make sketches of our characters.

Sometimes we put more work into the art than we do into the "build."
