male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"I think I should be the one to volunteer. My armor is heavier, and I fear that I would be near useless in the water." Ganer said, giving a concerned look into the water.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer didn't back down. He'd all but disqualified himself with the swimming requirement, so he decided that he might as well continue this. "Kill everything we've encountered? Do you identify with the devils? Or perhaps you thing we were wrong to slay the abominations we found in the water? We have not killed anything that was not a threat."

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

How do you think he knows so well?

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"I believe we have seen this staircase," Ganer interjected. What this being said seemed to be on the level, still Ganer couldn't put aside the suspicion that something was amiss. He decided to press the issue. "Why do you hide yourself from us? I can't help but wonder about the honesty of one who will not show his face."

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"As I said, I suspect there is little down here that doesn't mean us harm." Ganer whispered to Horven, not realizing what the halfling was attempting. He wondered why the voice would speak to them in that manner, claiming to offer them a favor, but speaking as though they were foes. "Why do you believe that we are here?" He said simply, wondering how the creature would react.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"I would suspect that there are not many, if any, things in this place that we would find friendly." Ganer said, as he waded out of the water. He readied his weapon and shield, and moved forward, ready for whatever might come.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"We will be fine, my friend." Ganer said with a chuckle. He waded into the water, and tried to make his way across in his armor, and with his shield.

1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I was really worried for a minute there that Carmina was about to cast some kind of fire spell.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I'm sorry all. It's been-wait a minute. You aren't waiting for me? Wow, I'm amazed, and a little frightened.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

"It's a Hell hound! Ganer announced when he got a good look at the creature.""Attack it with ice! And not fire." The last bit was added after a short pause when he realized that some members of the group might not make that logical leap.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer took his place as he was asked, leading the pack. He kept an eye out for anything threatening, that he might have to throw himself at for the good of the group.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

A sudden feeling of unease wafted over Ganer as he walked. "Is this a portal of some kind? If so, this might be how our associates came to be here, because it is attuned to Hell.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I was going to mention that bit about learning a new word, but I forgot.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I completely agree.

As for how you conduct yourself, I've been in two games with you that I know of, and in both of those games, you played characters that were fairly, hmm, brusque I suppose I should say. That said, both characters were well made and very well played. Long story short, I've never had a problem with you, as a matter of fact, I think Tad was my favorite character on that Kingmaker game.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Don't let Yamyra hear you saying that. I'm pretty sure she holds Ganer's opinion in about the same esteem as Carmina's.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"Now that this threat is taken care of, perhaps it would be best to explore the rest of this level before we risk our equipment?" Ganer said, expecting Yamyra to react badly, but he'd never been pushing the idea of them continuing this way, just that they should eliminate any threats that might attack while their backs were turned.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

It was me. I figured I'd let up a little bit to give all of you some time to breathe.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Oh, so I did!

confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer loaded another bullet, trying to keep the beast in view as he launched another shot at it.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 61

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer drew his sling and a bullet, and began to swing it. Following tradition, he attacked the same one as the others had.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"Are you willing to risk that they won't? Better to kill them now from range than hope that they will do as you expect." As he spoke, Ganer watched the water, as though he was expecting the beasts to rise and attack them at any moment.

I know, I'm scared too!

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"I am not suggesting that we wade into the water. You lot seem quite capable of killing one in a short time at range, so if we repeat the same process twice more, that should solve the problem quickly enough."

I am, of course, assuming that the dead one is floating on the surface. If it sank, then none of this is really relevant.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"Do we not have a scroll to animate the dead? Perhaps we could raise the one we killed as a lure for the others?" Ganer suggested. Clearly he was not as broken up about things dying for his purposes as Carmina. "I do not like the idea of wandering away with these creatures still alive and aware of us. Who is to say they would not follow and ambush us later?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer seemed to recoil from Carmina's words, though any pain she might have caused seemed to be quickly brushed aside. Still, there was a certain irritation clear in his voice when he said, "You have almost died once since we have arrived in this place, and possibly on other occasions that I have forgotten. Despite that, you continue to act in the same manner without hesitation, so I must take special care to ensure your safety." The redness of his cheeks suggested that might not have been the complete answer, but it was at least the truth.

I love that fully half the group (which includes Yamyra about half the time) are too socially awkward to even know how weird they are.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer hurried over to Carmina- well, hurried was probably not the proper term. Ganer ambled hurriedly toward Carmina. When he reached her, he began to look her over. First her hands, and then he held the sides of her head and looked over her mouth. All the while questioning her like an incurious physician. "Are you injured? Are you experiencing a burning sensation anywhere?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"Can they feel fear?" Ganer asked loudly, deciding to find out for himself rather than wait for an answer. It wasn't as if there was much else he could do.

Casting Cause Fear. I don't suspect it will do any good, but the DC is 16

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"There was a chance that something was lurking inside, waiting for us to be distracted by something else. There is apparently nothing of magical origin going on in this room, though. I do not believe there is anything here, unless we wish to explore the water." Ganer said that last bit with a distinct tone of distaste.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

It's not a problem, to be honest, I am playing Ganer in pretty much the same way. In fact, that's probably why Ganer and Yamyra get along so. . .interestingly.

Ganer began to chant a spell. When it was complete, he began watching the room in broad strokes, paying special attention to the water and the skeleton.

Using detect magic, and spending the requisite number of turns to discover anything interesting, if anything interesting exists.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Oh, that was the wrong thing to say to Ganer. . .

Ganer's smile and laughter evaporated as quickly as it had begun. For a long while he said nothing. In fact, it seemed as though he'd resolved to remain silent for the time being, until he finally spoke. "I have encouraged no behavior on anyones part, though I may begin to. And what value is there in reconciling with a family that shuns your for your own nature? Let them be damned, I say." His voice had turned cold and bitter, it seemed fairly clear that he was not speaking of any of Carmina's relatives as much as he was speaking of his own.

After a moment's pause, Ganer seemed to remember himself; he didn't apologize, but he did make an attempt to drop the subject. "We should keep going," he said quickly.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Despite the fight going on, Ganer smiled at the conversation. He was unable to resist, it was truly amusing. He decided to capitalize on the moment, hoping to unnerve the beast that he was facing, if such a thing was possible. He began to laugh, first a measured chuckle but increasing to a manic pitch as he struck the beast again.

Attack: 1 + 1d20 ⇒ 1 + (2) = 3
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Try not to let them bite you, Yamyra tells Ganer, after he's already been bitten. . .

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"How serious a threat are they?" Ganer called, as he moved toward the pack of monsters. When he reached the nearest one, he swung at it, as he usually did. Moving to BE48, attacking the creature at BF 48

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"You know nothing of from where and how she came to you then?" Ganer asked, disappointment clear in his face. He looked around suspiciously, as if speaking of things best left unsaid, before he lowered his voice and added, "How much will does she have? Can she refuse your commands?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

As they prepared to make camp, Ganer answered Yamyra's questions as best he could. "It would seem so. And the same source claimed that all lemures were once mortals in service of Hell. I know little of other sorts of fiends. Well, aside from Rakshasas. They are mortal souls twisted by their own evil to reincarnate as the children of other Rakshasas and mortals, or rarely from two evil mortals. I suspect that my parents feared that I was such a birth."

After they'd eaten, Ganer watched between Yamyra and Carmina. Each would make for fine conversation, each could tell him things he wished to know. In the end, Yamyra had, even as a mortal, bound a supernatural creature into her service, and that was a secret that Ganer found intriguing.

Not knowing a more delicate way to broach the subject, Ganer waited until Yamyra had sent Fancy away before he approached. He didn't know how autonomous she was, and didn't wish to risk offending such a creature. "I have wondered since we met, how did you happen upon Fancy? How did it come to be that she is in your service?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer shrugged at Yamyra's question, as well as the vague impression he picked up from her words in halfling. "From what I've read, in Hell devils of that sort are tortured and abused in various ways that form them into the higher forms of devil. Of course, the account where I read that claims to have acquired that information from an interview with a devil, so I suppose nothing is certain."

Ganer approached the pool in the middle and looked it over, staying far enough back to avoid anything that might leap out at him. "Hmm, an entry for amphibious servants, perhaps?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer watched Yamyra for several moments, wondering if she was serious, or if perhaps there was some kind of miscommunication. "You are asking me if this creature," He paused, gesturing toward the devil before them, "Is capable of sneaking? Not to my knowledge."

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

"I wonder precisely what is going on here. The beast seems to speak Infernal, but did not seem to understand when I spoke to it. It answered Carmina's question without problem, however."

Ganer looked back at the wretched creature, and watched it for a moment, "Do you understand me now?" He asked it.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Oh, right. I forgot it was speaking Infernal. . .

Ganer watched the others for a moment, wondering why they hadn't responded to it's cry for help, before he realized that they could not understand it.

He sighed quietly before he explained. "It is, uh, being. . .bullied by imps. It wishes for us to kill them on its behalf." He paused for a moment, before adding, "I have never heard of a beast of this sort that spoke."

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer watched the creature speak, a look of shock drawing across his face. He finally spoke, remembering himself and speaking Infernal.

Infernal:
"How is it that you are able to speak? Creatures of your like are supposed to be mindless, feral. By what trickery are you intelligent?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I can speak Halfling now! Woo!

Ganer listened intently to what Gared had to say, picking up enough words to piece together some meaning from it all. He decided to ensure that he understood before he made any moves. "A voice crying out in the language of devils? This has the sound of a trap. Still, it might be worth looking into."

With that said, Ganer approached the door in question and set his ear to it for a moment, hoping to understand more than Gared had. If that didn't work, he would pound on the door a few times, before announcing something loudly in the Infernal tongue.

Infernal:
"Who is there? What are you doing?"

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Hp: 1d8 ⇒ 8

I believe everything is in order now.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Oh sweet! I get tongues as a mystery spell! You all better watch yourselves, no telling when I'll have it up, no more talking behind my back for any of you.

Anyway, as far as spells go, the two that are jumping out at me are protection from evil (communal), and darkness, since we have three of the five (and Fancy?) with darkvision, that might be a boon if we were to fight something without it. Any thoughts?

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer took a moment to scowl at Gared's back. He'd entered first to ensure that his friends were not in any danger and what had happened? The dwarf had happily marched around him. Rather than saying anything, he simply moved forward, to Gared's right and took out his wrath on the foe that was now close at hand.

Moving to T84 and whacking the one closest.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

I've been playing Dark Souls too much. I caught myself thinking, why bother clearing the place? The enemies will just respawn while we rest.

Ganer moved to the front of the group, preparing to open the door. He quickly opened it and moved inside, preparing to deal with whatever lay beyond.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer made his way to the next, trying to ensure that he was the obvious target, before swinging at the devil.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

So, the good news is, the semester is over, so I have about a month where I won't be bombarded by school stuff until the summer semester starts, so maybe you folks won't be waiting on me quite so much during that time.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer marched forward, for a moment shocked into silence that he was being corrected on a matter such as this, and by Carmina! Finally, he recovered his senses enough to answer, "I meant the part about being formed from the souls of the servants of the Abyss."

He marched forward, as he always did, before preparing for the enemies approach. When they approached, he swung.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

That's a missed held attack, by the way.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer shrugged, "It is a fairly widespread belief, though one that I'm whose proof I am unsure of, that devils are formed from the souls of mortals sentenced to Hell by the Lady of Graves. It is my understanding that the same is considered to be true of demons and daemons. What that says about their 'personhood' is not for me to determine." Ganer said, following the group as they headed back to the hall.

male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) Oracle 4 Passive Perception 14

Ganer considered for a moment, before responding. "We haven't encountered anything here of any importance in the Infernal hierarchy in this place. Fiends such as that are typically used as messengers for greater devils, and sometimes mortal wizards. He may have a patron, though likely not one that sees him as any more than a replaceable employee. The fact that he set himself up as 'lord' of this place makes that unlikely though. Any reprisal will consist of only the resources he has available, and we've probably already seen most of that."

He paused again, wondering what he should tell the others. "It is never optimal to have a fiend with a vendetta against you, but I feel as though I have been opposed by worse than the likes of that one."
