More from the Rusty Dragon

Friday, August 28, 2015

I’m writing this from the floor of PAX Prime, where we’re running thousands of gamers through Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Adventure Card Game demos here in our home town of Seattle. It’s always a blast to rub shoulders with gamers at this convention, as it has a youthful, joyful buzz that makes it the perfect way to (pretty much) end the summer convention season.

I am giddy with excitement not because of PAX, however, but because of what WizKids delivered to the Paizo offices last week: ALL the paint masters for November’s The Rusty Dragon Inn set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted gaming figures!

I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, naturally. It took our crack team more than an hour to carefully evaluate the paint masters for Iconic Heroes: Set 5 and Iconic Heroes: Set 6, where were absolutely incredible and include some of the best prepainted figures I’ve seen from Pathfinder or any other line.

But all along, my eyes kept wandering to The Rusty Dragon, which looks absolutely phenomenal. I couldn’t be more proud of the way the set is coming together. If you liked Dungeons Deep (and sales suggest that most of you did!), you’re going to love The Rusty Dragon Inn.

It’ll be a while before we can show off the paint masters, but seeing all of them got me in the mood to share some more images from the set!

Up first this week is the Farmer. He farms. He’s a great victimbystander figure for rural or town scenes, and I imagine he slakes his thirst after a difficult day by grabbing a seat at the Rusty Dragon Inn. The Farmer is a Medium, common figure.

People on the comment threads keep worrying that this set doesn’t have enough monsters. You might think they’re afraid. Or even PETRIFIED. In the grand spirit of petrification, and to prove that The Rusty Dragon has more than farmers and barmaids, I present the Gorgon, whose breath turns victims into stone. The Gorgon is a Large, uncommon creature.

Did you know that no one has ever made a prepainted miniature of a Bunyip? Well, no one until November, that is! Another straight-up monster from The Rusty Dragon flops its way onto the scene. Bunyips show up in a surprisingly large number of Pathfinder adventures (including The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition), so I thought it high time they got a chance in the spotlight. The Bunyip is a (meaty) Medium, common figure.

And that’s it for this week. I’m back to PAX! See you in seven days!

3 Winners!

The Gorgon has been long overdue, the Bunyip (Bestiary 2 i think) appears in lots of adventures and the farmer with scythe is awesome!

I ordered the Inn even though i don´t know much of it - i´m sure it will be great.

Thx Eric.

Love em. That farmer looks remarkably like my brother in law? Uncannily...

The gorgon looks great Erik but is going to be as shiny and silver as that render appears?

Bunyip! I didn't really know I wanted one until I saw it, this is brilliant, andman does it have a certain creepiness about it. Thanks Erik. I can see why you're excited about this one, barring paint mishaps this one has me very, very excited (despite the plummeting Aus dollar).

Also when do we get to see the remaining iconics from sets 4 to 6?

The farmer is great. The gorgon is cool, too.

What's a Bunyip?

OMG BUNYIP!!!

Never, ever thought I'd see a bunyip mini. Keep being crazy, Paizo!!!

Good Grief!

I never thought I'd see a bunyip miniature - it's not quite how I'd imagined they'd looked when I was growing up, but I like it.

I may just have to get this set now...

Reggie.

BTW Young Boromir, a bunyip is a mythical beastie from the Australian outback; it was supposed to live in billabongs, had the head of a calf and the body of a seal and ate people. Or anything else that got too close.

There just aren't enough monsters that can tear players' limbs off. That's all I'm sayin'. If Aussie monster = tear players' limbs off, GO AUSSIES!!!

And that has to be the shortest time that a minis preview has ever been tops on the Paizo blog....

The Farmer is worlds better than the old D&D Human Commoner (not that that figure set the bar very high), and it should serve as excellent sword meat for marauders to cut down.

The Gorgon...meh. It's a fine sculpt, but I've never been a fan of the monster itself. Guess I can always paint it gold or shades of stone to make it into dressing for a temple or something.

The Bunyip is weird. But I dig it. Freaky is always welcome in my campaigns.

And now we've seem almost all the commons. Gotta say, aside from the Dancing Girl and Serving Girl (both of which would've been better as uncommon), I'm pretty satisfied on that front. Now I want to see more of the large uncommons (since those are almost always the best pieces in every set) and the rest of the dungeon dressing.

the Gorgon can also stand in as a farm animal till something more domestic looking comes along.

That bunyip figure is a creepy masterpiece. The face is perfect. I absolutely love that detail of a little love bite by another bunyip on it's body. Hopefully that detail translates nicely.

We have now seen:

10 commons (out of 13)

8 uncommons (out of 19)

4 rares (out of 12)

2 dressings (out of 6)

1 unique

1 unknown (dwarven bard with drum/bard from NPC Codex)

That makes 26 of 51 (more than 50%)

SIZE:

1 small (7-8 unrevealed)

17 medium (11-12 unrevealed - including 4 dungeon dressing pieces)

7 large - including the wagon (6 unrevealed)

1 gargantuan (0 missing)

It may be that there are less small minis in this set than in others which i would applaud because most small monsters from the bestiaries have been made and this set focuses on townsfolk which are mostly medium. Eric stated that NO HALFLINGS ARE IN THIS SET which only leaves gnomes as townsfolk. We got enough goblins for the time being and the only small mini revealed is a kobold from the Monster Codex.

On the other hand some small (or tiny)animals would make sense in this set:

-cat
-chicken
-(donkey) rat
-hare

and to a lesser extent:

-raccoon
-squirrel
-toad
-turtle
-viper

and i absolutely expect a barkeeper, bouncer, sczarni and prostitute.

If they do more animals, I really hope they get bumped up to uncommon.

I'm not much for complaint on the topic, but I am a bit overstocked on animals from Reign of Winter...

Since the brothels have been renamed to "dancing halls" all you can expect are "exotic dancers"

Though I, and many other Terry Pratchett fans, would appreciate it to be named "Lady Of Negotiable Affection". ;-)

Two horses is plenty bad enough, but if there turns out to be two dancers in this set as well...the sort of language required to adequately express my distaste for the very idea would quickly get me banned from here, so I'll just choke down my rage and say I really hope that doesn't come to pass.

Also, that drumming ginger had better not be common.

Which mini was this?

The dwarven bard with drum from the NPC Codex.

I think you missed the joke I was making there.

Edit: see my next post for details

I think you're thinking of the Forgoten Realms. It's preposterous to assume that Golarion doesn't have brothels.

I'm not, however, particularly interested in making a "Prostitute" miniature, however, and I suspect WizKids isn't, either.

All o can say is that people have been begging for horses since we started this lone, so while you might not love them I suspect a fair number of others will.

There are no more dancers in the set. We're covered.

I'm referring to the difference in building choices in Rivers Run Red and Ultimate Campaign.

The artwork, benefits and building cost for the brothel in Kingmaker are the same as the dance hall in Ultimate Campaign.

"exotic dancer" is an euphenism for "stripper"
and I don't expect to see one of them any more than the "seamstress"

count me in as one of those happy about two horses.

I like the horses, especially one with tack!

I have the D&D version of the Gorgon, so I felt I was covered... Until I saw this one! It's a must have. Well done.

The Farmer's hat seems a bit odd for the time period, but regardless he will see table time.

I, too, noticed that the bite mark on the Bunyip seemed to match his own mouth... I'll have to read up on these guys, but I suspect they don't get along well even within their own kind. It's an interesting creature none the less, and certainly one I don't have anything like at the present.

So far this set is a solid winner. I'm am interested in re-visiting the bar with the changes made to it since we last previewed it.

That seems to be an american problem to me.

I cannot imagine a realistic fantasy or real world without the oldest trade of the world. I´m also pro male and female ones.
I remember the "Ship´s Whore" from Skull & Shackles which became a ghoul and was called "Lady Ghoul" in the set.
But of course i understand the decision of not naming a mini such but a "Cleric of Calistria" would basically fill the same role. ;-)

I like both horses even though i have some from D&D.
So far i like every mini except the kobold because i think every other kobold illustration from the Monster Codex is much better.

What i would be interested in is learning about the other dressing pieces and if they are a table, bench and stool or if the bar set includes such things.

Also i have seen that in february a "bigger tavern flip-mat" will be released. Is that maybe the "Rusty Dragon Inn"? ;-)

Keep up the great work - you´re doing a very good job.

Thx Eric

Anyone who needs a prepainted harlot should check out the Seductress mini from Dungeon Crawler's Town Folk line. I've also used a rebased Heroclix Lorelei mini in that role, which can usually be purchased quite cheaply. (Though that sounds kind of wrong, when I put it that way o.O)

Lol, I did that too. She's a bit on the tall side, but she makes for a good seductress type.

Argh! Don't give them any ideas! I'm not planning a "12 Days of Christmas theme" for my campaign; I'm trying to make peace with the notion of having drummers drumming and ladies dancing, but I'll be damned if I accept bagpipers piping! And if there's a milkmaid or a lord in a leaping pose anywhere in this set? My wrath will not be contained.

Scarab Sages

That farmer is perfect for a Scythe-wielding Crusader's Flurry Monk I have in my head.

Now that I look again, it wouldn't be that hard to paint up that scythe as a pennant, too. I could make him a Giants fan!!!

I love the farmer, and the fact that its a common. Yay!

Now that we have included a Bunyip in every Pathfinder Adventure Card Game path, and there is a miniature of a Bunyip, we can finally create the Bunyip character we've always wanted to create.

Will the Bunyip character have a power that requires killing another character as a cost?
