Pathfinder Battles Preview: Good Girls, Bad Guys (?)

Friday, December 20, 2013

I've been threatening to reveal a few more "good guys" from January's Wrath of the Righteous set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted figures, and now that I'm sitting here in the Minneapolis airport about to fly back to Seattle from my holiday vacation, it appears that there are somewhat fewer heroes in this set than my memory had earlier suggested. As in, there's only two more.

Since we're within about three weeks of the set's release and I don't have a ton of preview blogs left to go before you have your own figures in hand, that means that a touch of evil will be creeping into a blog that I'd originally intended to focus on good guys.

In the spirit of the set, I trust you'll forgive the unexpected onset of darkness.

So, let's start with the goodies, shall we?

Here we have the crusader Queen Galfrey, leader of the goodly kingdom of Mendev on the edge of the Worldwound. Galfrey plays an important role as the Wrath of the Righteous campaign progresses, giving your player characters and opportunity to rub shoulders with a national leader. Of course, in full plate mail armor and with a longsword held aloft, this figure also doubles as any female warrior player character or NPC. Queen Galfrey is a Medium figure slated at the rare rarity.

Arueshalae here is a redeemed succubus who fights for the side of good against her former demonic brethren. Based on a cover illustration by superstar Pathfinder artist Wayne Reynolds, this figure is a masterpiece of sculpting that pushes the envelope for what's possible with a Medium figure. We've got wings. We've got a (sweet-looking) bow. We've got great three-dimensionality. All in all, one of the loveliest figures in the set for one of the most interesting NPCs in the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path. Arueshalae is a Medium, rare figure.

And that's it for the good guys in this set. I sincerely hope your player characters are up to the challenge of fighting off all these nasty demons and hideous monsters! Speaking of which….

We're not done with demons yet, and this wily little fellow is at the vanguard of their insidious armies. Here we have the Brimorak, a rank-and-file demon your players will grow to loathe as the campaign progresses. Drawn from the cover of the very first Wrath of the Righteous adventure with stats in Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Book of the Damned Vol. 2: Lords of Chaos, the Brimorak is cast in clear plastic with fiery hoofs and a flaming sword. This Small figure is slated at the common rarity.

This enormous, mottled pile of disgusting grossness is the Vescavor Queen, an evil sort of giant insect you definitely do NOT want to meet on the battlefield. The Vescavor Queen is on the very Large side of Large, and is definitely one of the more disturbing figures we've produced to date. Naturally, I love her. She's an uncommon, so I suggest your PCs pack some bug repellant before setting out for the Worldwound.

Last up this week is another gross-out king, the evil Xanthir Vang. Again based on a Wayne Reynolds cover image, Vang is an evil villain composed of writhing vermin. He makes a perfect alien spellcaster, uber-villain, or all around bad guy. I don't want to give away too much about his role in the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path, but suffice it to say—he's not good. Xanthir Vang is a Medium, rare figure.

And that's it for this week (and for 2013!). We'll see you next week (and next year) for a look at the remaining figures in the Wrath of the Righteous set. Until then, be safe, be strong, and watch out for demons!

Brimorak, Yes!! I'm going to need at least a dozen of those bad boys. As far as the others go, they (with the exception of the Vescavor Queen, which just looks awesome) look awesome and like they could fill in for several different roles outside of the AP.

I can barely contain my excitement for Arueshalae!!!!
The Brimorak is a great addition to the commons this set has provided. I am going to want multiples for sure!
This set is turning out great!

Vang is awesome, wish I had him for the end of a different adventure path that I wrapped up a few weeks back.

Going to be an expensive set for me, full of awesome.

Queen: Wow. Nice paladin. I hope the simplified paint steps can pull this one off, she looks utterly fantastic. Doesn't seem to be a lot marking the mini as a female (no dalek bumps) so perhaps it could also proxy as a male paladin.

Alright I may as well admit it first - I do not like Succubi. That said I do like thus one. That is indeed quite a complex sculpt and paint job. Not sure what use I'll have for a redeemed succubus beyond the AP but I'm sure I'll find one for such a nice mini.

Brimorak: Thank you, thank you, thank you. So glad to see this is in the set. It is a fantastic mini for a small and a great use of transparent plastic.

Vaecavor Queen: Well I did not expect that one. It appears in such a minor capacity in the AP I was sure we wouldn't see it, and at uncommon that means 3-4 in a case, interesting. Pity we don't have a vascavor swarm to go with her.

Xanthir-Vang: This mini deserves some hype. A great looking worm that walks, and a what looks to be an exact reproduction of the WAR artwork. There is some cool detail on that mini.

Wow, 7 to go and we get to see them all next week? 8 if you include Deskari (whom I can not wait to see, I think he could be the crown jewel in this set.)

Yay! A Worm that walks!

I also literally shivered when I saw the Vascavor Queen.

Great looking previews. Hope I can scratch up enough gold to get a few bricks of these!

Queen Galfrey, Arueshalae and Xanthir Vang are all must haves. Great preview!

Arueshalae is fantastic. I was hoping for her when I saw her image on the cover of The Midnight Isles.

The Vescavor Queen is nothing short of wicked. Cool!

Thanks for another awesome preview.

Erik, I am deeply, deeply disappointed.

I keep waiting week after week for you to preview some minis that make me say "meh". Each Friday my hopes for at least one mini that I really don't care about are dashed. My soul pines for poorly executed or niche models that will gather dust.

But no. Instead all I get are these exquisite works of art.

Ask yourself, "what of the masochists of the miniature-collecting world?" You've got to have a ping-pong ball swarm up your sleeve, or a quadruple-amputee ettin, or an invisible stalker that manifests itself as an empty miniature pad (look kids, it's really invisible!) up your sleeve somewhere, yeah?

I mean, now that the best Doctor Who ever is gone, what else do I have to crush my soul?

Vescavor Queen really??
One of my favorite Pathfinder AP monsters get a miniature??!
Awesome work!
Don't really care for the others tho.

Looks like Arueshalae is a complex mini; hm, I'm not sure if I like that bow and arrow, but otherwise it's a really nice-looking mini.

I wish the Brimorak would be more dynamic; it's a rather passive pose for such a fierce creature. This is a minor complaint, however; besides, it's probably quite hard to do with small figures with transparent parts.

All the others are really great; I especially like Vescavor Queen and Xanthir Vang.

Omg, I need to have the vescavor queen. She is, after all, my baby.

Those look cool!
Some heroic male figures would be nice, too.

Virtually all PPM sets to date (From the abysmal Alpha run of Mage Knight on-ward) have had scads of heroic looking male figures in the gaumut of fantasy races. Female figures however, have either been impractically attired (to put it delicately), magi, or priests, with very few martial types; and are largely half-elves, elves, and humans.

Pathfinder Battles has done a lot to fix this gender / racial balance; while still providing heroic male figures.

I'm not saying make less female character types, just asking for a decent male paladin sculpt. That one class seems to have reverse gender discrimination against it.

Fair enough, PFB has done 3 female paladins (including the 1st half-orc female Paladin I've ever seen, PPM or otherwise), so a few male paladins would be cool.

How would you differentiate a Paladin from a heavily armored fighter or cavalier though? (Alain makes a pretty good paladin substitute at the moment.)

I just want to see more of a racial diversity in my ppm's PFB currently has a (small) handfull of gnomes and halflings, 4 half-orcs, 1 elf, 2 dwarfs, and a plethora of half-elves and humans. But I don't want just core races either, I want more catfolk, tengu, charu-ka (1 each at the moment), kitsune, nagaji, samsaran, wayang, ratfolk, (all currently at 0), etc.

I count 3 elves (okay one of them could be of almost any other humanoid race)

As for a male paladin sculpt, it's about the ornateness of the armor and the religious markings and trappings.

As for seeing more races, I'm on board with that. The Tengu pirate was a great example of this.

I would also like to express my interest in seeing a larger focus on making more pc races and classes available. It would be great to see male and female versions of all races of all classes. Lately it seems like the focus is far more towards monsters.

Although I have felt that we have been getting quite a few female pc/npc's per set, I think it was well pointed out in this thread by Leo that female pc/npc's were not well represented in pre-painted plastic miniatures in the past. I not suggesting making less of them, but I would like to see some more male sculpts per set.

I would love to see "Citizens of Golarion" set. Such a format could focus on providing a variety of races and classes for pc's and npc's. Additionally, similar to Earth, there are a great variety of human ethnicities in Golarion and it would be great to see these better represented in pre-painted plastic miniatures.

I'm not sure what sort of a Huge miniature would be best appropriate for a "Citizens of Golarion"... but who says Dragons cannot also be a "citizen" :) Alternatively, maybe the case incentive could be a set of typical Golarion mounts, such as: a pony (medium), a camel (large), an elephant or mastodon (huge)?

Right my bad, I forgot about Meri being in the Heroes set, and the one in the full armour.

I forgot Merisiel as well. That makes 4. Together with Shalelu and the generic elven wizard.

I too hope we have a vescavor swarm to go with the queen, which is an awful (in the true sense of the term) figure. Eager to see the set in meatspace.

There are a bunch of male PC-appropriate figures in the next two sets. A bunch.
