I winced at the old name. Something in my head, something I still couldn't banish, swelled with pride even as my teeth clenched and a spark of rage flared deep in my guts.
It almost sounds like she used to be a Gray Maiden, but isn't one anymore.
@F. Wesley Schneider: What do you mean you still need to read this? You WROTE it!

Really liking this. That particular group, including those no longer among them, are way too rich with possibilities to just let them fade away, so I'm really glad to see them brought back in multiple venues. I was eager to see this story as soon as it was announced the week earlier.
Digging this noir-ish view from inside one of their former member's head. The after-effects of what was done to them and how they live with it afterwards is where the real character fun comes in. :)

Totally. You've probably already seen it, but for those who haven't I did a companion piece to this story (or, more realistically, vice versa) in Pathfinder #52 including a role (which is itself kind of a tie-in to Player Companion: Varisia, Birthplace of Legends & Knights of the Inner Sea) with details on how to play a Gray Maiden (and a few other hints). So there's a TON of Gray Maiden love and tie-ins out there this month.

Great, great, great idea!

Inquisitor of Andoletta!? *KAPEW!* That's the sound of my mind blowing. IS she like eighty? Or does she just have really boney fingers? I wrote Andoletta to be the incarnation of the meanest Catholic nun-teacher I never had and for some reason just never considered inquisitors of her. Awesome. :)
Based on that background reference, I'd imagine Liz's inquisitor comes across as the most devoted Catholic schoolgirl who learned (and applies) everything she picked up in that nun's class. And, also armed with a really kick-butt weapon (probably a knuckle-cracking, head-coshing quarterstaff)... ^_^
Great fiction, by the way...

Really really want.
My Crimson Throne character was Alvirah Merrin, inquisitor of Andoletta, who had been hiding in Cheliax. She came to Korvosa when she stopped getting letters from her little sister, Sabina Merrin... :D
!?
How did that play out?

....swiping the look from the warrior nuns in the Kingmaker fiction for these folks now. Maybe one for Champions of Purity? :D
The nickname always made me imagine a more Native American aesthetic for Andoletta herself. Old shamanistic wisewoman with a cloak of black feathers. Combining that with the trappings of Catholic clergy could result in a really neat visual, but I'm not sure how to picture it yet. And then there's possible art for her in Chronicles of the Righteous down the line...

Now I read her description to my daughter, and we looked at each other and said "That's Granny Weatherwax!" (From several of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. Though she's probably NG not LG). Clearly an archetypal character.

I keep thinking about doing more with this character. And I want to do something with the Sleepless Agency which also gives me a bit of the noir vibe.
We'll see.
I'm always happy when female characters are written as...well, written as humans, instead of as "girls". The pacing, self-inflectional dialogue, and the gory combat descriptions were the highlights for me.
A noir Sleepless Agent would be totally rad. If you run it in Ustalav (one could only hope...), maybe you could dash a bit of Kolchek in there :)
