Looking for Magic Item ideas for a very high Magic World

Hello all.
I am running a story in a uber high magic world. In the time line were playing its during the fall of the 5000year World Wide Draconic Empire. Its the highth of the golden age of magic (the platum age if you may.).

Im looking for cool ideas for stuff. I like the idea of translating modern tech, (and even scifi tech) into magic. I like alot of stuff in Ebron, the train, and airships. ive even introduced a "stargate" type thing into the world for travling around long distances.

Bags of holding, quivers of plenty, everburning torches (laterns) are so common, the mudane ones are sold for pennys. goggles of Dark vision, infravision, and magicvision are around.

Any ideas...? cool fluffy things, to useful tools, and world flavor.
i forbid guns and lazers. wands and rods are mor flavorful...

Draco Guard Armor

This armor was made for the dragon emperor's favored troops it has the following effects

Breastplate +1 while worn adds the half dragon template to the wearer.

Draco Elite Armor

As above but +2 and able to use the breathweapon 1/day/4 levels of the wearer

Draco Officer Armor

As above but Full Plate +2, acts as a permanent enlarge person on the wearer and able to use the breathweapon 1/day/2 levels of the wearer

How about Gem Powered Armored Transports, or GPAT's. Basically big, mechanical, armor plated vehicles, based mainly off of animals and vermin, that run off of enchanted gems. Ever read Dinotopia: The World Beneath? That is the main inspiration.

Note: Combat versions available as well.

This is an awesome idea.

Suggestion wise I would say go back through the past few yeards of the RPG Superstar's Top 32 and look at those items. There are some really great ones in there. Or if you give me your e-mail, I can send you the list of the top 50 or so that I liked. I've already got them re-formated into the PF format and listed in order alphabetically.

Some of the highlights include a stirring road that tells you the school of magic for a potion. A trench coat that can be turned inside out to become almost any other over garment (robe, cloak, etc.), and a few others of too much to simplify here.

I'll even through in some of my own favorites if you'd like. Oh, and hit up the Cleaves: 100 Treasures thread for some more ideas.

Make intelligent magic items commonplace.

Also make very minor magic items into trinkets such as a +1 diplomacy amulet.

Divination based items would be common for far-seeing and far-talking. Also teleport travel items.

Dark Sun had giant beetles that were killed, turned into zombies, and hollowed out to be used as war chariots...

Elemental powered trains that travel the planes (and world(s)) through stargates.

Piggybacked spirits that act as augmentation AIs...maybe infernal or demonic or angelic "possession," but (mostly) controlled by the creature being possessed.

Magically engineered lifeforms, like Sleipners--8 legged equine beasts of burden that are VERY fast.

Alchemical weapons that are able to change their base materials to bypass all sorts of damage reduction.

Engine Knights that use powered armor.

Magical fruits and trees and crops.

Healing for everyone!

Zombie butlers!

A world where magic is established and commonplace, and cultures have had time to craft permanant magic items that conjure food, fresh water, etc. would likely be surprisingly backwards looking, to some viewers. Most people would dwell in the cities, where they can get access to the cool magic toys, and they would barely ever have a reason to leave the walls of their city (although they may have travelled to many other walled cities, hidden lands, sealed enclaves and / or demiplanes, through teleport circles, paying a modest fee to step through the doorway to various similarly high-magic communities).

Outside of the cities, which would likely be concealed by magic, or in otherwise inaccesible places (hidden valleys, atop mountains, floating in the clouds, etc.), the planet would look almost uninhabited, since there would be no real reason to establish mines or farms or logging camps or other signs of civilization.

Agriculture? Irrelevant, if cornucopia items can create sufficient food for everyone, which, after a few decades of magical craftsmanship, shouldn't be an issue. An arcane version of Hallow would likely be developed, with spells that could be anchored to it such as 'mass endure elements' that provides a limited resistance to environmental extremes to all residents of the city, or a satiation spell similar to the effect of a Ring of Sustenance, allowing everyone in the 'hallowed' area to go without food or drink, or some low-level necromantic effect that kills germs dead, and makes incidents of disease in the community vanishingly rare. No need to leave the town for food. Or for goods from far away lands. Or to cut down trees for raw materials (just conjure them!), or to mine for minerals (there's a whole elemental plane full of rocks!), etc.

Exotic items from all over the world, and all over the planes, would be fairly common. Handcrafted items, as opposed to those crafted by genies, azer or fabricate spells, would be seen as 'quaint,' and some purists might show off by outfitting their home or person with mundanely crafted materials, which would end up being perversely more expensive than just wandering down to the Djinn-forges and picking up 1000 yards of exotically patterned silk, and then having fabricated into whatever ridiculously baroque pavilion you want for your latest soiree. The fad of having mundane vs. magical stuff would go in and out of fashion every generation or so, with one generations 'daring' being another generations 'gauche' or even 'ungrateful,' since magical craftsmanship is one of the many things that have made the quality of live so much better. Depending on the prevailing mood, someone who decorates himself in hand-crafted goods could be seen as striving for some sort of purity, and idealizing the 'good old days' when everything wasn't handed to everyone on a silver platter, or as someone who is thumbing his nose at the backbone of society, and turning his back on progress, like some sort of Luddite.

Non-spellcasters would be distinctly second-class citizens. A level of Adept (or some arcane NPC class, such as Eberron's 'Magewright') would replace Expert and Commoner and Aristocrat, to various levels, for those who don't have the discipline or breeding to be a true Sorcerer or Wizard (or Cleric, with Clerics of gods of magic, or services that magic has revolutionized, like travel, healing or artifice, being the highest-regarded).

Also: Clockwork Summoning Circle Difference Engines.

I can also imagine portable summoning circles using spirits of knowledge to act as personal wikis and comminication devices, and possibly even banking media.

With magic doing everything, there would likely be a large leisure class, possibly a nobility class to make important decisions, maybe a priestly class, and maybe another class of citizens that have more ambition than the typical leisure class--ADVENTURERS!!!!!! This might also include the high level spellcasters that maintain all the goods and services for the leisure class.

Golem armour. Massive suits of magical armour that works much like iron (or adamantine, or mithral) golems, but controlled by "riders".

Flying machines with various wands as weapons, each round you can activate a different wand as a swift action. Comes with Storm of Vengence bombs and featherfall catapult seat.

Glaives with mounted wands (Warhammer 40k greyknight style), for that lovely ranged option such as lightning bolt or fireball.

Rings that store your entire wardrobe.

Rings that give you a Prestidigitation effect to set your hair and give Women makeup.

Farms run entirely by unseen servants.

Homes with bound demons for heating water/destroying the trash and other nifty household bits.


Stones of communication that work like mobile phones, made with the sending spell or something.


an all magical world would be highly corrupt. People would be lazy, things like clairvoyance/claraudience would be strictly governed if not out lawed. as im sure would many other different spells.

things like druids or other "inferior" casters using "psuedo magic" might also be outlawed/proscribed.

Or it could be the complete Opposite.


I think lots of trikets and gadgets should exist in this world. Sure there is gonna be power armor and golem security guards, but what about unspillable bear mugs, self filling wine barrels (self pouring too maybe?) Unseen servent waiters wearing suits and gloves so you can interact with them might be a nice touch at upscale restaurants.

Entertainment would also be big business in this world, after all like set said, basic things like mining, trade and agriculture become irrelevant, so an entertainment industry would be important. Things like linked crystal balls (TV's) that allow you to watch grandios shows that incorporate summoned creatures from all walks of life (and planes). In this world I definately envision excess on the part of the magical elite.

well to be honest it would only be a short step and some illusion spellsto make them appear anywhere, wall or just right in front of you hologram style.


Steal liberally from Exalted.

Creation (Exalted) setting is chock full of really high level magic and magical items alongside poor dirty pig farmers.

Some items are obviously anime/manga inspired like Massive Power Armor/ Gigantic Weapons/ Continent Wide Defense systems but other items are more traditional high fantasy tropes with the dial turned up to 11.

Basically imagine anything that super science might be able to do including WMDs, massive terraforming efforts, creation/manipulation of life, etc and make the motive force magic instead of technology.


As far as having intelegent magic items that talk and what not , go watch the anime soul eater. If your looking for a way to mix tech with magic Iron Kingdoms . Enjoy sir.

Natural would be valued more than magecrafted for the same reason that natural diamonds are more highly valued than cubic zirconia. By all the standards by which diamonds are judged, the artificial zircons are superior, but the cache of having real diamonds is more valued than tawdry bling.

Chefs would likely be highly valued for their artistry. Yes, a djinn can create a sumptuous feast with a wave of his hand, but there's a question of whether there's any originality there. Fabricate depends on a relevant Craft skill so it's reasonable to assume that Create Food requires a Profession Cook check to pull off something really amazing whereas a djinn or any spell would at best rise to the level of a Vegas buffet but not create anything superlative.

There would also be a certain cache in hunting and fishing, as having something someone caught personally would be far more valued than whatever was produced by magic.

There's also a question of value. If a flying carpet is the equivalent of a family car, a broomstick the equivalent of a moped, and a magic tablecloth takes the place of a refrigerator, these things would be valuable enough to steal.

Of interest with magic tablecloths and similar magic tech. You can either go with the magic where it automatically creates the favorite food for everyone, or, alternately, you can have it produce what the creator thought the perfect meal was. For example, you have a tablecloth that every time its spread out conjures grandma's Thanksgiving feast--always the same meal, always nice, but a little bit tiresome if you had to eat it everyday.

One game I ran the characters found the magic Arabic saddlebags which created an Arabic traveler's feast. Later, when they were in Cathay, they found the pawnbroker had a set of nested baskets that produced dim sum. I think having the styles of food the items produce be culturally set adds a lot of flavor. You could vary the tablecloth so that it produced other meals than the Thanksgiving feast, but it would always serve whatever it is in the style of a certain grandmother.

The Rod of Splendor of course always produces an elaborate Vegas buffet, including the ice swan.


Another idea for High magic World, which many may not like, is to let some magic feats create stuff not in gold cost, but silver cost. This does represent the mass production, easy of knowledge, and readily available components. This 1/10 reduction in cost, would let the masses (NPC), have an easy time of getting magic items, as well as PC.

Example:

High Magic:

Silver = Brew Potion
Gold = Craft magic arms and Armor
Silver = Craft Rod
Gold = Craft staff
Silver = Craft Wand
Silver = Craft wondrous Item
Silver = Forge Ring
Silver = Scribe Scroll

Modern

Gold = Craft magic arms and Armor
Gold = Craft Rod
Gold = Craft staff

Old World, but want a few magic items to be common.

What i like potions :) kind of nice when the farmer can afford them :)


in Netheril, a High Magic kingdom in FR, when inside one of the flying cities (i forgot which one) an arcane caster can atune thier magic items that they create to the mythal, and then they negate the GP cost, but not the exp cost. Negate, but only if it stays in the mythal, if it leaves, it stops working.


If you have access to these two books they offer high tech based on magic.

They were written in the heyday of 3e but they are very good books.

To LionGold, did those files I sent you help out. I know there is a fair amount there, but I think it is all good stuff. And any input you have on any of my original creations would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone else have an interest in the list of magic items? They're mostly wondrous items, with a few others thrown in and the list is continually growing.

One thing that would be highly valuable would be anti-magic. Reminds me a bit of that novel "Soulless." Maybe there would even be a new race (or template) that is anti-magic. They can negate magic with a touch.

I imagine big silver mirrors showing plays and operas and new forms of entertainment.

Maybe magic jar used to ride other people or creatures recreationally, kind of like Virtual Reality/Gamer/Surrogates, etc.
