Two for the Road!

Friday, September 30, 2016

We've got four more figures to preview for November's Deadly Foes set of prepainted plastic gaming miniatures, but just to be mischievous, I'm going to split them into two previews of two figures each. To draw things out a bit longer, next week I'll be on-site at New York Comic Con, and there will not be a Friday Publisher Preview (though I do hope to keep up my new Worldscape Workbook blog column while I'm on the road. If you haven't yet checked out my new column, which gets into the nitty gritty of my design decisions when putting together official Pathfinder RPG stats for legendary heroes like Red Sonja and John Carter, I urge you to do so at the above link. I've had a ball writing the blog series, as well as writing the Pathfinder Worldscape comic itself, which hits newsstands Wednesday, October 19th. If you enjoy my writing here on the Paizo blog or enjoy the Pathfinder comics in general, please consider setting up a Pathfinder Comics Ongoing Subscription.

But enough about comics! This space is for miniatures, and this week I've got two fantastic figures to show you from Deadly Foes!

Ardent watchers of this space have been predicting this Angelkin Paladin from the first day we revealed the set's packaging, and here he is in all his celestial glory! Based off of a character who shows up semi-frequently in our interior illustrations, as well as on covers like Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of Angels. The clear plastic effects on his flaming sword and glowing halo make quite the impression upon evil foes, or even goodly folks who happen to be in his way. The Angelkin Paladin is a Medium, rare figure.

Last up this week is another Medium, rare figure, and what a rare figure it is indeed. Here we have Paizo Creative Director James Jacobs's personal character, Shensen! James has played many different versions of this swashbuckling bard over his RPG career, but two of them are my favorites. First, of course, is the version that appeared in the Hell's Rebels Adventure Path. That appearance, in the blockbuster Pathfinder Adventure Path #100, came with a nice Wayne Reynolds painting of Shensen that now hangs in James's office (which, incidentally, is right next to mine—I can hear him through the wall as I type this). But an even better version of Shensen, or at least one that's more meaningful to me personally, is the version James played in my old Kings of Absalom office campaign, where she was one of many stars of the show. Shensen as presented in Deadly Foes makes a fantastic player character or NPC, whether good or evil. Shensen, is a Medium, rare figure.

That's it for this week. I'm off to New York Comic Con! See you in two weeks!

Until then, I remain...

The pose of Shensen is awesome! And two different flaming swords to boot.

Dark Archive

You are evil, Erik, evil! ;-)

I called Shensen a long time ago in one of these blogs.

The way i see it on the render pics, the cape of the Aasimar Paladin looks kinda dumb from behind, whereas the cape of Shensen seems to work out.
Both are in movement to make the pose look more dynamic, which sometimes works out and sometimes not.

Shensen looks cool, but i'm not yet sure about the Aram mini.

So that leaves 2 minis to be revealed:

-1 large rare which is either a Bone Devil, Planetar or very special named Bone Devil.

-1 dressing piece which could or could not be the Crimson Throne.

What has me excited is that STARFINDER will be getting minis - at least for the spaceship battles!

PC master race... now with overclock sword!

Cool minis! ^_^

Hopefully I'll have enough money scraped together by the release date to get my case.

Silver Crusade

Is there a Girallion mini?

You should have totally had Shensen pose dramatically on top of it.

Silver Crusade Contributor

There's a couple of older ones. ^_^

Silver Crusade

Do eet.

dangit now I need two Shensens.

Spoiler:
one I can paint stone grey and the painted one
:-)

any chance them high heels are carved out in the mini?

and I sure hope that halo will be removable

apart from that, nice stuff again!

I suspect that may be no in both cases. i image the angelkins head will be made from transparent plastic and painted leaving the halo unpainted. Feel free to correct me Erik if I'm wrong!

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

Halo is not removable.

AWESOME.

Also... Kings of Absalom needs to return!!!

Of course the halo is removable. Just cast summon exacto knife!

that would leave the hair in the halo unpainted giving streiggt view to the face from thr inside; so I guess it's glued on.

Which leads me to interpret Erik's answer as "not intended to be removable" ;-)

Removeable or not I like him. Both are nice additions, although I hope that shensin is the correct scale, she crouched so should be lower than most mediums. Assuming scale is good;

Aasimar paladin: like it. At first I was unsure so I sat on it for a while and coming back I'm happy to say I think it's a solid mini. Excellent for a PC, nice as an angel sub.

Shensin is a great mini. Excellent bard, great swashbuckler, nice priest of sarenrae. Sword could do with a little paint, I prefer the Aasimars sword, but I think overall very nice.

Two to go. I really hope the last rare is a bone devil, not the unique one from hells rebels but a generic one. Means I'll need to buy extra since it's rare but i can take that.

This set is overall extremely good. Great use of transparent plastic, solid selection of figures. I just hope the production minis can live up to the renders. Congrats Erik.

Do we have a better ETA on release date? Also, just throwing vote in on dressing. I like them and agree they should remain in set. I get concerned when it's 1 per case and it's an item that logically requires more than one. Would love to see dungeon dressing line.

The release date should be november 16th, just 6 weeks and 2 days from now. ;-)

Day before my birthday! Happy birthday to me! Of course they won't reach me in the merry old land of Aus by the release date sadly.

Is that date confirmed? Exterior sites still reflect an October release.

It has definetly being moved to november, though the 16th is an educated guess. ;-)

I like to picture the sounds coming from Mr. Jacob's office to be predominantly the clacking of two tiny two fingered claws on a keyboard and frustrated roars muffled through office walls.

For the people that want to know about the set after Deadly Foes (name, release date, incentive, featured minis):

Don´t look if you don´t want to know ;-)

:
It´s called "Crown of Fangs" and will be based roughly on "Curse of the Crimson Throne".
It´s intended release date is april 2017.
It will contain the "Court of the Crimson Throne" incentive set, basically a throne room and all that is in it.
Also:
-skeletons
-Red Mantis assassins
-Grey Maidens
-giants

I guess, if we look at the "Curse of the Crimson Throne" pawns, that a lot of the creatures featured in there are in it.
Erik also revealed that we will get a common "pillar" as dressing piece, so i guess that the incentive (priced at $39.99) will contain a few in addition to it being one of the 6 dressing pieces in the set.
It should also have the "Crimson Throne" itself (as shown on the cover of the hardcover compilation).
I´m also fairly certain that one of the 4 medium sized rares will be a "Red Queen (Ileosa)" mini.

Other minis that are PROBABLY in the set:

-Dream Spider (small)
-Blackjack
-Shoanti
-Rakshasa
-Leukodaemon
-Meladaemon
-Minotaur Skeleton (large)

Silver Crusade Contributor

Sounds quite ideal - I've been hoping for more of one of those things.

Out of curiosity, what's your source for this info? Your information has been fairly reliable so far, but it's always nice to learn more.

Thank you!

Might want to spoiler that too. ^_^

Cool news on next set. Looks like it will have some nice minis. Will have to get case incentive.

Dark Archive

Here is the description of the case incentive as it appears in:

:
AP #12: A Crown of Fangs: "Throne Room:
This magnificent room is lavishly decorated with frescoes,
mosaics, and hanging tapestries of gilt crimson silk. Three
colorful stained-glass panes on the windows present scenes
of past kings and queens. A huge fireplace stands in the
east corner, its mantle shaped like an enormous stone tree that has spread its branches up to the ceiling. Against the
southwest wall, on a low dais of granite, sits the Crimson
Throne itself, an iron throne draped with deep red silks and
velvety crimson cushions."

possible dressing pieces:

-fresco
-pillar (confirmed)
-mosaic
-tapestry
-stained glass window
-fireplace (fairly certain)
-stone dais
-Crimson Throne (100% certain)
-cushion

Dark Archive

These are the creatures that i think most likely to be in the next set:

:
AP#7:
-Owlbear Skeleton (25% chance, there is only one in the whole AP)
-Dream Spider (75%, multiple appear and we haven´t had a small spider yet)

AP#8:
-Eel, electric (50% chance, they appear as medium creatures in the original but would have to be small in Pathfinder)
-Sea Hag (near 100% chance, Yvicca is in the pawn collection and we havn´t had a Sea Hag in PPM. Also "Ruins of Azlant" is coming up)
-Leukodaemon (near 100%, there has been some demand for Daemons and i think Erik said he wants to do them rather sooner than later)
-Cultist/Cleric of Urgathoa (75%+, they are useful enough as enemies)

AP#9:
-Dressing piece "Tall Knife" guillotine (Erik being the creator of Galt and this being a very good one per case rare able to stand on it´s own, i think it very possible - near 100%)
-Wolverine (another missing common creature from the Bestiary that appears in the pawn set - 50%)
-Dressing piece "painting on wooden stand" (3 appear in the adventure and it is both something unique enough to be a rare and to be around from time to time in rpg adventures - 25%)
-Rakshasa (100%, missing monster from the Bestiary that has often being recommended and multiple appear in the book)
-Belker (50%, a nice looking large outsider from Bestiary 2 of which two appear in the adventure)

AP#10:
-humanoid skeleton (50%, this is the very cool picture from page 251 of the Bestiary)
-Kyton/Chain Devil (100%, a staple creature in pathfinder of which multiple appear through the later parts of the AP. Strangely they have been left out of the pawn set)

AP#11:
-Skeleton on skeletal horse/Nightmare (75%+, another staple creature in rpg, but only one appears in the AP. Would make a great large rare)
-Minotaur Skeleton (50%, a lot of them appear in the book, but a large human skeleton would have a higher utility)
-Shadow/Greater Shadow (50%, lots appear, still missing from B1)
-Danse Macabre (25%, while being in the pawn collection, it is essentially a ghostly grim Reaper)

AP#12:
-Large Black Dragon (50%, Dragons have been done to death in D&D, but we only had a medium black one in PFB)
-Dread Wraith (25%, lots appear in the AP, none in the pawns)
-Belier Devil (25%, a unique looking large creature from B2, perfect as a rare)

Dark Archive

I am just reading AP #110 "The Thrushmoor Terror".

There are three essential creatures in there that are encountered which havn´t been made into PPM yet, but have been asked for a lot recently:

:

-Assassin Vine
-Phantom Fungus
-Basidirond

Also some cool new Mythos creatures:

:

-Byakhee
-Star Vampire

Is one in the next set?

Yeah, 1 candelabra per case is absolutely useless.

i expect the candelabra to be offered as a repaint on paizo.com, but it still is expensive to get for people outside the USA or Canada IF there won´t be additional candelabras inside the Case Incentive (which i suspect may be).

Another dressing piece that is sorely needed is a tall mirror (1 square broad, 2 high).
AP #110 for example has multiple ones and i can think of some other adventures where mirrors are appearing.

In the past, one or two of the dungeon dressing pieces has occured twice in a case.

I'd also like to suggest that one Candelabra is not useless, it is merely frustrating. Having at least one per case will mean that the singles market will have a few available, and you'll already be starting with at least one from your case purchase.

You are right, it´s not absolutely useless, it´s of very limited use. ;-)

I had two crates in the Rusty Dragon Inn case (i think).

I got two crates and two tables in Rusty Dragon Inn. I got two braziers and two cauldrons in Dungeons Deep. It's definitely possible to get duplicates, and I think that Paizo and Wizkids have made good choices on which pieces are made in greater quantity.

Dark Archive

We really need rectangular tables that are 2 squares long - EVERY adventure has them!

Also: 7 weeks/35 days till release! :-)

Grand Lodge

Do subscriptions typically deliver around the release date or ship on the release date?

I am a new subscriber. Also, I live near Washington, DC and chose cheapest shipping option.

Any insight would be great.

Check the October Shipping thread that is stickied at the top of the Customer Service section of the message board. Typically, you should receive your shipping e-mail some time before the release date, and you will usually (but not always) receive your package before the release date as well.

For example, this month the date range for shipping e-mails is from Monday, October 3rd through Friday, October 14th. If you were lucky enough to get your shipping e-mail early in this period, you will probably have your order before the release date of October 19th. If, like me, you are still waiting for your shipping e-mail, you probably will receive your package some time after the release date -- but you will know by the 14th that it is on its way to you.

For items due out in later months, check the appropriate thread whenever it is put up.

I think Deadly Foes is slated for a November Release now. So, not getting a shipping email yet probably doesn't mean much.

Thank you for the explanation. It makes sense, seems reasonable for all parties, and should let me tell the wife when our checking account should get pinged.

Stay Awesome!

You can also buy yourself gift certificates, redeem them and then set your subscription to use up any store credit first, before charging your card. So rather than a $300 hit, you could regularly put away $100 a month in the three months leading up to it (or whatever).

That can both make the cost more manageable and give you regularity in terms of when your card gets charged - regardless of when you pop up in the shipping queue.

Grand Lodge

That's a great idea! I'll definitely look into that.
