The whole situation was getting very bad very fast. Her attempts at diplomacy failed, her spells were missing, Lantressa was beginning to have serious doubts about the advisability of continuing. Still, she wasn't ready to quit yet and sent yet another ray of heat at the rats. This time she chose a different target though, a new rat had just started to enter the fight and decided that maybe he'd be an easier target. Her beam flew out at the ratman in a serious bid to burn his hair off.

Korriban feels the bites into his flesh again. "Seriously? You've got to be kidding me." He sees the reinforcements coming in. "You've got to be kidding me!" He then sees the rat swarm pouring in from the walls. "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!" Korriban digs into his coat pocket and pulls out a potion, greenish white liquid glinting in the light. Realizing that he might be in danger, he decides to move back through the entrance. He runs past Selawyn. "Sorry!" He yells out at Teodor, "Hey, Teodor! Think one of your friends can help us out?!" He doesn't realize that his body's immune system is working double time.

[oo]Drawing a weapon (or in this case, a potion) is a move action and doesn't provoke an AoO. Alos, I'll spend a harrowing point on a reroll for the fortitude save from the wererat's bite that I got a 4 on.[/ooc]

ROUND THREE (cont'd)

Korriban, moving nimbly to avoid provoking attacks from the wererat and the dire rat he finds himself surrounded by, dodges back into the entrance of the cavern, pulling a potion out as he goes. Lantressa reaches past him and fires a bolt of flame into the far wererat (fortunately shooting over the dire rat on the ground and the prone wererat), which catches him in the shoulder, and he howls as his a vast area of his fur is singed and blackened, his pink flesh blistering below it!

The horde of rats swarms forward, dividing cleanly to go around the wererat Selawyn tripped, which props himself up, laughing, on one arm. Selawyn takes a chop at the foremost rats and manages to sweep a good number of them away with her guisarme, but then they are upon her. The rats swarm up and over her legs, viciously seeking out gaps in her armor to exploit, and Selawyn winces as their needle-sharp teeth prick her flesh. Her gorge rises, but she manages to stay focused on the task at hand...

The dire rat, seeing Korriban flee, hisses in rage and whirls to attack the nearest target: Teodor. The priest sees it coming and idly kicks it away. The wererat to the north, apparently thinking Selawyn distracted by the swarm, clambers to his feet languidly--only to see her silver guisarme arcing down toward his face! Her blow catches him in the neck, and he topples in a spout of blood. Another wererat howls in rage and rushes toward her, wading through the rats and swinging his sword at Selawyn with a furious blow that she dodges easily. Teodor clubs his foe as it clambers to its feet, but finds himself beset by a wererat on each side. He manages to beat back the attacks of one, but the one he'd clubbed lunges in and lays his sword across Teodor's ribs. It's a grievous blow, but the priest's strange, hardened skin turns the worst of it aside...the wererat that Lantressa scorched pushes his way through the melee and dashes around to confront Selawyn as well.

Selawyn takes (after DR) 2 points of damage from the swarm, and Teodor takes 9 points of damage (after DR) from the black wererat. Also: Selawyn made two Fort saves, one a natural 1 and the other a total of 21, both in response to the swarm's attack. If you want to reroll either, just do so in your post. Party's up--Teo first, then posting order!

The effectiveness of her spell heartened the tiefling woman but the sudden merging of the groups caused her no end of consternation. With them all muddled together again she couldn't do much to them and so opted for the only other thing she could do. She said to Korriban, "I'm going to make sure none are coming down that tunnel, be ready to come if I scream." With that she moved down to check the passage ahead and was ready to cast a spell if she needed to.

Moved myself and am readying a grease spell to try and slow down any enemies that are coming down that tunnel.

ROUND FOUR!

Teodor brandishes his flail, and a burst of holy light closes his companions' wounds and restores their spirits. Everyone gets 10 hp! I'm assuming you exclude the wounded wererats. Lantressa makes her way south down the passageway; around the corner, she can see a thick, heavily rusted grate blocking the passage the sewage flows through. It extends from the floor to the ceiling and looks very old. She can also dimly hear, from somewhere not far beyond, a thick voice saying, "Let me out, mean rat hoomans! Me so hungeries..." Then something that sounds like it might be sobs.

Map updated! Korriban and Selawyn are up.

Korriban feels the holy energies stitch together some of his wounds. He looks down at the potion in his hand. He decides on a different strategy. He puts the potion down on the ground. He then ruffles through another one of his coat pockets and pulls out a flask of deep red liquid. He shouts out, "Sel! Down in front!" He then tries to visualize his target and shouts, "Fire in the hole!" He then tosses it into the empty space behind the were rat.

Standard Action: Throw it! Targeted space is marked by an 'X'. Ranged Touch attack. AC is 5. All creatures in adjacent squares are dealt splash damage (anything in that space would have gotten 1d6 points of fire damage). All of the adjacent creatures get hit with 1 point of fire damage. This would include the green and yellow were rats, the rat swarm, and the dire rat. Since this is also at 20 feet, this is 1 extra range increment. That equals -2 to the attack roll.

I originally wanted to throw it at one of the wererats. But I didn't want to damage Selawyn in the process. So, while not the most damage profitable, it is the safest.

ROUND FOUR (cont'd)

As Selawyn ducks, Korriban lobs a glass vial filled with orange gel over the melee. It splashes into the ground and shatters, sending a brief sheet of flame roaring outward that provokes squeals of pain from the wererats and incinerates a number of the regular ones. Selawyn ducks back into the tunnel and swings her guisarme at the wererat beyond her, opening up his chest as he howls in pain.

As Selawyn steps away, the rats pursue her, swarming down the tunnel and over her and Korriban's legs. Selawyn, however, in a desperate swing, cleaves through a number of the tiny bodies and sends them flying--the swarm, squeaking, disperses, broken up, running in every direction! The dire rat lunges at Teodor once more, but is sharply rebuffed.

The wererat Selawyn just slashed, looking panicked, drops to all fours as his body shrinks. Within seconds, he's become a dire rat. The rat darts a few feet away from her, clearly looking for a way out. Meanwhile, the closest wererat darts around the corner to close with her, swinging his sword in a wild panic and snapping at her with his teeth, but to no avail. On the other side of the cavern, the two wererats fighting Teodor lunge at him; the one in the open manages to land a blow on him with his sword, but it largely glances off the priest's magically enhanced skin.

Teodor takes 2 points of damage after DR--he (and then the rest of the party) is up!

Lantressa sends a jet of acid blasting into the dire rat that used to be a wererat, tumbling it end over end and knocking it unconscious. Korriban dashes away from her and past Selawyn to stab his blade into the other dire rat, leaving it bleeding on the floor!

The two wererats, now fighting desperately, move together to stand back-to-back. One swings and snaps at Korriban, who dodges nimbly; the other snaps at Teodor, and manages to land a glancing blow on the priest's side that Teodor doesn't even notice. One of them screams to the north, "Hurry up!!"

As if on cue, two dire rats come wriggling out of the cracks in the wall to the north. Snarling, they transform into what you now recognize to be hybrid wererats, brandishing blades of their own!

The party's up! Teodor first, then the others in order of posting. Coming up on the end of this encounter!

The wererat between Teodor and Korriban squeals in pain as Lantressa blasts it with acid. He manages to dodge Korriban's thrust, though, and Selawyn's cautious blow fails to connect as she readies herself for the onslaught from the newcomers.

His companion manages to land a glancing blow on Teodor, while the two newcomers scurry around the column in the center of the room and lunge at Selawyn.

"Begone from here, surface dweller!" one of them snarls, landing a glancing blow her shoulder. The other squeezes between the column and the wall, lunging at her, but fails to connect.

Lantressa was displeased to see that there was a rat close to slipping behind Selawyn as it would give the person a chance to reach her, something she'd been trying to avoid. She knew it had to die and die fast so she sent a ray of searing heat from her fingers at the rat man.

Botting Selawyn to keep us moving!

ROUND SEVEN!

Teodor's flail slams down into the prone (I'm assuming) wererat, mostly rebounding but definitely cracking a rib or two. Korriban lunges in with his rapier, causing the creature to howl in pain as the alchemically silvered blade pierces its flesh! From the entrance, Lantressa sends a searing bolt of heat blasting into one of the wererats assaulting Selawyn, which causes his fur to blacken and smoke! Just made it thanks to his squeezing! :)

Selawyn steps carefully backward, in part to prevent the lycanthrope Lantressa burned from going after the sorceress, and in part to get room to take a swing at the one that hasn't yet been injured. Her cautious swing fails to connect, but she needn't have worried about the creature on her flank; badly burned and whimpering, it shrinks and transforms into a dog-sized rat, scurrying away in fear. It doesn't get far, though, as Selawyn whips the butt of her guisarme around to brain it, leaving it senseless on the floor. The downed wererat between Korriban and Teodor scrabbles to rise to its feet, but Korriban downs it with a thrust of his blade.

Snarling, the two remaining wererats begin to retreat. The one next to Teodor takes cover in the entryway to the next chamber, making only a token stab at Teodor as he backs away; the other, seeing that Korriban and Teodor are distracted, scurries away to join his companion, Selawyn's whirling blade just barely rebounding off his armor. As he runs, he slashes at Teodor with his blade, and manages to catch the surprised priest under the arm with a nasty gash.

Teodor takes 4 points of damage (post-DR) and the party's up!

With the lessening of threats Lantressa re-entered the room and spoke to the furthest ratman from them, "You should relax and stop fighting." The wererat could feel lassitude coming over him and lulling him into a daze.

Botting Teodor for the moment!

ROUND EIGHT!

Teodor swings his flail at the wererat before him, but it ducks and the flail just careens into the wall next to him. Selawyn, advancing into the room, is luckier: her guisarme catches him in the shoulder, and he screeches in rage as the silver bites deep! The wererat manages to parry Korriban's thrust, even as Lantressa's words leave his companion, behind him, blinking and stupefied. "Whazzat? I should...what?" the other wererat mumbles.

"Move, fool!" the one in front shrieks. He darts through toward the far room, too quickly for Korriban or Teodor to react, but not the combat-trained Selawyn. She slashes him once more as he darts away, though he staggers and keeps going into the next chamber. "Girrigz!" he cries as he disappears from sight. The other wererat just stands there, mumbling, for a moment, then snaps out of it with a jerk.

The party's up!

As Teodor channels energy, the wounds on him and his companions close--as do those on a number of the bleeding, downed wererats, though they remain unconscious. I'm assuming you're excluding the conscious ones.

ROUND NINE (cont'd)

I believe there is an unconscious wererat in range...Sorry for the delay in posting, had family over yesterday!

The wererat in the doorway howls in rage as Selawyn slashes open the throat of one of the unconscious creatures. Korriban's stab is deflected by the wererat's shortsword, though Lantressa's acid splashes over his shoulder. Baring his teeth in a hiss, he dashes away from your blades, but falls with a splash into the muck.

Beyond, you can hear the other wererat shouting. "Intruders, Girrigz! Silver-bearing uplanders! Help!!"

Teodor is up, then the rest of the party!

The execution of the helpless wererat stunned Lantressa, she hadn't expected such a ruthless action on the part of Selawyn and cried out, "Why did you just murder that person Selawyn? We didn't come here to do that, only to talk with them, to try and reach an agreement, we've been defending ourselves so far but that was uncalled for."

Holding my action and hoping that maybe this will help in some way.

The wererat shrieks as Selawyn's blade slashes into the muck its lying in, turning to scramble away...

Korriban's got an action, then it's their turn! I'll wait till tonight to bot him.

Also, glad to see we got a good old-fashioned ethics debate going on between PCs! Been a while since one of those! ;)

If you don't mind me butting in now and taking an action, I mostly wanted to see what Selawyn and the rat did before I took mine. If that is an issue then ignore the following.

Tressa realized that this was perhaps the dumbest idea she'd ever had but she wasn't letting Selawyn murder another. She quickly moved around and pushed past Korriban to stand between the woman and the rat. She turned so that, disturbingly, the rat was at her back and held her arms to the side, "Enough! Yes they attacked us when we came to talk to them but we did, knowingly, intrude on their territory, would you have done any different if you felt threatened?"

Yeah, not my brightest idea ever but maybe, just maybe, it will pay off.

Korriban watches the situation around him. He lowers the blade in his hand. He tries to talk to everyone, "Listen. We can't let this divide us. I understand Lantressa's stance on this. We did invade their home and start attacking them, that's true. However, remember that they attacked us first. And, remember that they're declaring war on the surface. And, Teo, don't patronize Selawyn. She's just doing what her training tells her to do. She's not killing because she likes it. She's not lording control over us and them like the other Hellknights. I understand where everyone is coming from. This is a tough situation. Now, let's try and end this." He then mumbles, "Seriously, we're fighting so much and I'm trying to keep us together." He then says out loud, "Now, no more fighting. Or, I swear to the Sting, I will turn this adventure around!"

He looks at the fallen wererat. "Listen, buddy. All we want to do is to talk. It didn't have to be like this. So, we're giving you another chance here. We're being nice. Let us talk to your boss and let us resolve this peacefully."
