Emmett Escheus |
Glad to hear from you. No worries from my part. Be well.
Helaman |
Guys - full disclosure. I am trying to get my s@%& together and its not going well. I decided to go off my meds (depression) around January and for a few months all was well but at the moment I am at the bottom of a black pit and I'm trying to claw my way out. Its all I can do to even get out of bed in the morning and hold down my job.
I'll be making appointments with my Psych (who I haven't seen since Nov) and getting myself back in track. Its gonna take some time.
That said, this game REALLY matters to me. I will try to post something as soon as I can. If you wish to quit then I totally understand but please let me know if you are willing to stay for now.
Emmett Escheus |
Glad to hear you're feeling better! Take good care.
GM Helaman |
The long stone bridge, bereft of hand or safety railings leads you to the first part of Schloss Caromarc. You can see the castle is cunningly built to hang over the river with seperate portions linked by bridges to make a disjointed whole.
Thunderstorms start to roll in and between their rolling booms and the roar of the river crashing over the rocks below the noise is nearly deafening.
In the distance and across the other side of the river a large figure climbs up the rocks in an amazing feat of pure strength - is it your old friend The Beast?
You turn towards the castle itself and its large wooden door bound in blackened iron.
Elidal Zemiel |
"Agreed," Elidal replies as she glances up at the darkening sky. "And I don't know but I mean to find out. We won't get anywhere standing out here when the rain hits!"
With one eye open for any potential threats, the inquisitor swiftly strides up to the door and bangs on it with her her fist. "Hello! Is there anyone home? We're travelers seeking shelter from the storm!"
GM Helaman |
A door panel, very narrow and hard to spot (if not for Elidals' perceptive nature) opens for a brief moment before it slides shut... and then the storm seems to whip up around Elidal forming into a large whirlwind which is lit from within by a pair of glowing eyes!
You may have initiative as the thing forms but it doesn't count as flat footed... party up!
Round 1! Fight!
Simeon Plavini |
Simeon watches the large figure climb the far slope, "Indeed, not many could follow such a path."
His eyes slide to the gathering storm, then to the door that promises shelter and danger in equal measure.
He steps back as the whirlwind forms around Elidal, eyes narrowing...
Hmmm, doesn't have knowledge planes...would arcana work?
Knowledge(arcana): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Nalun Phlithmira |
Kn:Planes: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Oh for the Lady's sake. Now the very elements oppose us...
Nalun begins inspiring his allies +2 to attack and weapon damage
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett grumbles at the appearance of the whirlwind: "This place is a fortress, and welcomes visitors only with death! Best to strike it down before it reaches us..." and, fighting a wincing pain in his left shoulder, he pulls his bow and lets fly an arrow.
Shortbow with IC and deadly aim: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 141d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 4 = 9
"Sterne! Guard me!" he adds to his companion, who takes a few steps forward and growls darkly.

[dice=Knowledge(arcana)]1d20+14
Sure, why not for this case as its a summoned entity. Simeon identifies it as a summoned air elemental - a large one!
Elidal Zemiel |
Round 1
"!"
As the wind kicks up and some sort of creature begins to form Elidal instinctively draws her longsword and takes a swing, hoping to take care of the thing before it has a chance to strike.
Attack (Mithral Longsword; Inspire Courage, Heroism): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Elidal should still have Heroism left from the fight with the golem dog since it's 10 min/level.
Jaru Toth |
Inspired
Jaru frowns uncertain how and arrow will affect a creature made of wind, but he follows Emmett's lead and loads and fires his crossbow anyway.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 2 = 19
damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 = 11
+1 to rolls if PB applies
Emmett Escheus |
Elidal raises a good question: Is my previous Cat's Grace still on?
GM Helaman |
Sure - its on
All the attacks seemingly do no damage to the creature - whether this is due to the quality of the attack or if it is due to the weapons itself is not clear but Simeons missiles strike home.
It reaches out in a twisting torrent of winds to strike Jaru.
Slam: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 damage
Slam: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16 for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 damage
With a roar as if winds were being drawn through a funnel the creature moves into a whirling vortex that pulls at Elidal...
Reflex Save DC18: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
It sucks the Changeling inquisitor into the air and shoots her upwards.
1d8 ⇒ 4
1d4 ⇒ 3
Lucky girl!, it spits her 30 feet into the air by diagonally back away from the door... where she comes down on the bridging walkway close to the edge.
6d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 5, 4, 1) = 23 damage.
Jaru Toth |
I don't think cat's grace is still up, at least mine isn't since it's been over half an hour since the troll fight when I got it.
Also, note that the elemental can't make standard attacks or threaten when in whirlwind form. Also, i don't think it is clear in the description, but I believe assuming that form is an action so the elemental may have double dipped there.

Yeah, you maybe right. Ok, just Elidal then... There are 2 results that would have had her flipped off the side of the bridge but she dodged a bullet.
Also 30 ft falling is 3d6 - my home rules it would be 6d6 but let's keep it base for here.
Sooooo instead of 6d6? 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
Elidal Zemiel |
Round 2
Caught by surprise Elidal shrieks as the whirlwind launches her into the air, crashing painfully into the ground at the end of her impromptu flight. As she struggles to her feet she realizes just how close she came to being thrown into the river far, far below.
"Oy! Watch yourselves or we'll all wind up at the bottom of that river!" she cries. Her sword still in hand - somehow - she cautiously approaches the elemental once more...
That's going to leave some bruises, assuming I make it through this in one piece...
Move action to stand up from prone, another move to advance 20 feet back towards the elemental. Is there any good way to get a visual of where we are in relation to the castle door, the elemental, and the ledge/bridge?
Jaru Toth |
R2 State: Inspired
Jaru ducks the furious wind and then winces as Elidral is thrown hard high and hits hard, but breathes easier when she gets right back up. He relodas and fires again.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 21
damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 10
Simeon Plavini |
Simeon winces as Elidal is hauled bodily up into the air to be deposited roughly onto the bridge.
Pulling another scroll out, he quickly converts the potential magic inscribed into two lightly glowing grey orbs that fly and strike the elemental with unerring accuracy...
Magic Missil: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7
Emmett Escheus |
"El-!!!" shouts Emmett in surprise. Relieved to see her land on the bridge, he tries pinning that thing further.
Shortbow with IC, deadly aim, cat's grace, and rapid shot: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 - 2 = 171d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 4 = 7
Shortbow with IC, deadly aim, cat's grace, and rapid shot: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 - 2 = 261d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 4 = 12
GM Helaman |
Emmetts second shot seems to catch on something in the flurry of winds before the arrow is tossed away... maybe it hurt it? Who can say when it comes to a creature of air? Jaru's bolt also seems to pass through something before it is snatched away in a torrent.
Again Simeons glowing bolts of energy appear to strike into the midst of the maelstorm of winds... and the creatures eyes turn on the wizard...
It takes a 5ft step and then reaches out with long arms. buffeting the wizard.
Slam 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19 for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 damage
Slam 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24 for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 damage
Elidal Zemiel |
Round 3
"Is that all?" Elidal taunts as she closes the remaining distance between her and the elemental. "In that case I'll send you back to wherever you came from!" In the instant before she brings her sword down in a vicious blow, it almost looks as though the inquisitor's eyes spark for a moment with divine fire.
Attack (Mithral Longsword; Heroism, Inspire Courage, Judgement, Power Attack): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Activating Judgement - Destruction as a swift action, then a standard to attack once she moves back within striking range.
Simeon Plavini |
Round 3
The world spins and turns topsy-turvy as the elemental blows Simeon off of his feet, sending him skidding across the stoney bridge.
Groaning, pain emanating from every limb, Simeon manages to get to one knee, when Jaru's strong hand grips his shoulder. Even above the howling wind of the elemental, Simeon can hear the muttered words of healing coming from his friend, then the healing warmth stealing through his body.
Taking a deep breath, he looks up at the Pharasmin and nods his thanks.
Plucking another scroll from his pouch, he almost shouts the arcane syllables his hand shaking as orbs of force burst forth...
Magic Missile: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 2 = 9
Emmett Escheus |
"Not very subtle..." complains Emmett as he feels the effect of Nalun's spell.
With a further grunt, he lets his bow drop with a clatter to the floor and frees his axe as he steps up to the wispy whirlwind and strikes through it.
PA, IC, BS: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 331d12 + 11 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 11 + 2 + 3 = 25
Confirm: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 292d12 + 22 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2) + 22 + 4 + 6 = 38
"Happy?" he adds as his blade cuts deep, glaring at Nalun.
Jaru Toth |
Jaru blinks as Emmett's powerful ax blow annihilates the air elemental. "I am certainly happy," he notes. "That was a dangerous threat. Now while you are feeling powerful, perhaps you can hack open the door or climb up and drop a rope for us."
Elidal Zemiel |
"I'm happy too," Elidal huffs, breathing a sigh of relief. "I didn't fancy taking a swim in the river or seeing any of you take one either!"
"As for subtlety, I think that time has passed. With everything we've run into on the way to the front door, anyone inside surely knows we're here," she adds.
Elidal Zemiel |
Elidal scowls at the door as it slowly creaks open. "Just like that? After all the hassle to get here? I'm not sure if I should be relieved or disappointed," she mutters quietly.
"Right, looks like the only way to go is forward," she adds, more loudly. As she cautiously pushes the door open further and peers inside, a strange new thought occurs to her.
Maybe this is an invitation, now. Maybe we're being *asked* to come in...
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
Elidal is taking a look through the open door before she'll just waltz on in; she's got darkvision 60 feet if there's no light inside. Also about how much time has passed since the fight with the golem dog? Trying to keep tabs on how much longer she has on the Heroism Nalun gave her.
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett was about to say something, but the gate opening strangled his voice. With wide eyes, he looks at the gate, then at the fortifications beyond, but nothing calms the dread rising in the pit of his stomach.
He exhales loudly, unable to look at his companions without betraying his fear, then forces his legs to step through the portal. Sterne follows on his heels without a second thought.
Sh!t... he thinks to himself.
Nalun Phlithmira |
Nalun beams at Emmett, not quite understanding the man's anger.
Oh. Wow. the young man exclaims when the door opens seemingly of its own accord. He follows Elidal.
Simeon Plavini |
Simeon rolls his scroll back up into a tight bundle, and tucks it back into his pouch.
He joins Emmett for a moment, looking up a the strange edifice of the Schloss, before joining the other in cautiously entering the now open gate.
GM Helaman |
A huge portrait hangs above an enormous, lit fireplace in this large entry chamber. A set of steep stairs rises to the right.
Night vision shows a contraption of metal and wood in the far corner of the room which animates as you enter, flailing arms at you while other arms clasp a slate board. It rolls towards you on wheels, arms whipping about.
Let me update the map. You can have initiative
Elidal Zemiel |
Round 1
Elidal isn't sure what the strange contraption is supposed to be, but she does know that she's not about to let some sort of wood and metal monstrosity get the better of her. She cautiously moves forward to clear a path through the door but stops, adopting a defensive position rather than engaging the thing immediately.
"What's this? Another guardian?"
Moving forward to current map position and going total defense as a standard action. +4 to AC until next round.
Emmett Escheus |
"Damn those nuisances!" grumbles Emmett as he rushes forward to intercept the automaton, with Sterne growling and snapping at its wheels.
Sterne, bite and trip: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 201d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Emmett PA, IC, BS: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 141d12 + 11 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 2 + 3 = 26
