Ouch, not the best first impression there.

As they approach Alkenstar, Tar'jub puts his weapon in his bag and tries his best to appear like a familiar. When Sparel begins talking to the guard, Tar'jub flies over and lands next to him.

"Master not so good with words sometimes, but he very important! Many important people in Alkenstar be upset if Master not getting ship docked immediately!" the small imp adds when he sees Sparel having trouble convincing the guard.

Tris bats her eyelashes at the guardsmen, but what she planned to sound like worry seemed closer to annoyance. Perhaps the swamps and lack of magic had taken their toll after all ...

Hmm. Diplomacy doesn't seem to want to play along today ^^

Guard Captain Sense Motive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25

The guard captain at the head of the ship looks between the people onboard the barge, stroking his chin as he does so. Despite the fact that Belor is in plain view, his eyes seem to just slide right off of the rogue, though. It's very clear to Belor that not one of the guards has noticed him.

The captain seems to be contemplating, however. After a few moments, he speaks at last. "Listen, I highly doubt that you're invaders, come to sack the city, but...that's not the only thing to be worried about. I'm going to throw you a line, and I want you to tie your ship down. We'll tow you into the dock, and then I'll have to take you in for a short questioning. If everything checks out, you'll be free to go."

He looks very seriously at the pirate crew. "If not, though...I'm afraid we'll have to keep you a while longer."

He snaps his fingers and another crew member passes him a coil of thick hemp rope, which he then tosses below onto the deck of the barge.

At the earliest opportunity Belor sneaks off from the group with the intention of not getting taken in by the guards. If possible he tries to get just outside of the area of the docks without attracting the attention of the guards.

The bigger ship easily tows Sparel's barge into Alkenstar City's dock, past a dozen other huge ships and into an area where a collection of smaller vessels are docked, right up against the shoreline, almost. The pirate crew is beckoned to dock, and met by a small contingent of rifle-bearing guardsmen.

Other than the boom of whatever building is producing the thick plumes of smoke, the city is actually very quiet at this time of night - unusual for a city of this size. The other ship, the big galley, sends a rowboat ashore and the guard-captain dismounts along with another four guardsmen. Together, the guards all usher the pirate crew into a large stone castle-building. Halls are traversed, stairs are climbed, until finally the party enters what appears to be a conference room.

During all of this, none of the guardsmen pay any sort of attention to Belor. He very easily slips off of the barge and away, into the night.

The room that the rest of the crew is ushered into contains a long, ovoid table and a dozen chairs, at which the guard-captain beckons the crew to sit at. He sits on one side of the table, steeples his fingers in front of him on the table, and opens his mouth to speak.

"So, I'd like to start off with a couple of ground-rules. We don't get a lot of late-night visitors here in the Grand Duchy, so you'll be at our mercy until we say you aren't. You didn't come by official channels, so you will not complain when we view you with suspicion." He makes eye contact with Praetorius. "We also know what you are, and here, we don't discriminate. You aren't gonna eat anybody while you're here, and you can stay for as long as that's true. That said," he says, shifting his gaze back to the party as a whole, "There's a curfew, so you'll be spending the night with us anyway."

He clears his throat and sits back.

"Now that we're past those, though, we'll get to the meat. What are you doing in our bay? What is it that brings you to Alkenstar?"

"Pardon our tardy arrival. We were waylaid by a giant frog creature on the way here. We dispatched the thing, but it repairers and such delayed our arrival. And if that unfortunate happenstance requires us to spend the evening in your company then I, for one, am fine with that. Perhaps we have more in common than either of us realize."[b]

All technically true. :-)

[b]"Regarding official channels, we've never done business with the city before and aren't sure where to start. Perhaps you can point us in the right direction? We're looking to make some rather large purchases of weaponry. It'll be highly profitable for whomever we do business with. We're happy to follow official channels, We just did not know where said channels were. On a related note and as we have some time to kill, perhaps you could tell us about your great city. As a personal favor I'd ask that you let us know all of those things that newcomers should know about the city. I'm sure our working relationship can be mutually beneficial. "

Sparel isn't offering to bribe the guy directly, but there is an undercurrent indicating that he wouldn't be opposed to the idea. A little sense motive should indicate that. Sparel's not exactly trying to hide it.

Beaufort is clearly in awe of all the men armed with guns around him. While it certainly isn't the first time he has seen so many armed guards as such, it has been a long time.

What types of guns do they have?

Two things, Sparel - when did your Diplo check become +8? You rolled a nat 20, so it doesn't matter right now, I just thought it was like...2 or something. Also, Bluff DC 15 to pass along a secret message without actually saying it.

The guard captain's eyes twinkle with amusement, and he snaps towards the door. The door opens again, and another soldier leans into the room. "Yes, sir?" he inquires, and the captain responds, "A bottle of wine, Private, from my office." The soldier nods curtly and leaves, returning a few moments later with a bottle of wine and a glass for each party member, excluding Tar'jub (who appears to simply be a familiar).

"Now, regarding weaponry. I'm going to assume you mean firearms, and I'm going to first advise you not to go to the Gunworks directly. You'll need to speak with one of the Magistrates for anything larger than a purchase of a few rifles or pistols. The sale and distribution of firearm-weaponry is strictly controlled here, and I hope you brought nearly a literal mountain of gold to pay for it, because that is what it will take. Tomorrow morning I can direct you to this district's magistrate, and there you can speak with him."

"Secondly, most visitors come with established caravans, that leave from Geb and Nex and travel by land through the Wastes. It's a dangerous trip, but you're welcomed through our gates when you show who you are. If you come in the future, I strongly advise you go that long way."

Beaufort, they have simple firearms at the same tech level as you do. Most of them have muskets, though the captain carries a pistol and a short sword on opposite hips.

No. My intent is to share and share alike. I'm being sociable. I was actually planning on offering him a bottle to replace his. He's a public servant. Presumably our bottle is a lot better, but I wasn't going to point that out. We'll drink his crap wine and he'll have an exquisite bottle to add to his collection.

Edit: also depending on his temperament I was thinking about recruiting him. He'd make a much better living as one of our crew. However, that's premature just yet.

After some polite chit chat over wine Sparel says to the captain where only he and our group can hear,

"I suspect you're the type of man who appreciates the direct approach."

Sparel sips his wine

" We're here to purchase cannons. Several of them. We're not in a rush, but I'd like to be out of the waste sooner rather than later. If you know anyone who could speed the process I'd be very grateful. "

"On another note how happy are you in your current employment? I'm looking for some good men to help run a ship. It's magically enhanced and the work isn't difficult. However, I need some reliable men to help keep things in order. Also, I'm confident the pay is many times what you'll make here. Many many times. Would this be something that interests you? No need to commit to antlything here and now. Just let me know if I should continue or never speak Of it again. "

As the evening goes on the guard captain and pirate crew discuss the possibility of hiring him and some trusted men. Sparel gives enough details for the captain to make a mostly informed decision. However, he never reveals that the ship flies or that they may be pirates. Although since the captain is aware that there's at least one vampire on board Sparel does let him know about the blood to wine trick. That should help alleviate any concerns that the hirelings are actually cattle. Sparel points out that he and other current crew members are living. It's bad business to eat ones crew.

though the two things are independent, my hope is that he'll also help us get our cannons. It would certainly help him during employment negotiations in the category of "see how useful I am?".

Nevermind, I want to author the post now.

The rest of the interview passes amiably with the watch captain, and he grows more and more visibly enamored with the idea of accompanying them when they leave, especially with Sparel's reassurance that he won't be party to anything they might be doing and that they plan to see the world when they leave.

Unfortunately, the wine runs dry eventually, and the captain checks the water clock in the corner of his room - a large, ornate, expensive thing that appears to actually be pretty accurate. "Oh jeez," he says, "I guess it's time to lead you to your cell. I'll see you in the morning, of course. Try to have a good night's sleep." And he leads you out of the conference room and down a few flights of stairs, to a stone corridor lined with barred rooms. He opens one of them up from the keyring at his belt, and he lets all of you into it. It's got enough bunk beds for everybody to sleep, and so when he closes the door and bids, "Good night," it takes no time at all for everybody to relax and fall asleep (except for Praetorius, who doesn't sleep, and paces impatiently for the duration of the night).

The morning comes, though, after only a few hours, and with it comes Captain Vimes again, unlocking the door and letting everybody out. "So," he murmurs, "What are we gonna do about Mr. Greatsword here?"

Belor,

It's impossible for Belor to enter a dwelling without permission, and given that he's looking to avoid notice, he decides to crash in a warehouse instead of anywhere else. The city, being a trade city, is full of warehouses full of merchants' goods. Trade caravans in the city are, after all, fairly rare, so goods often stockpile before some rich merchant prince comes to buy it all.

The morning is only a couple of hours away, and with the rise of the sun Belor is quite officially trapped in the warehouse.

"if you can direct me to the magistrate I'd like to get this business done. I do hate paperwork. Besides, the sooner we finish the sooner our new crew can start making their fortunes. "

i intend to tell the Magistrate a watered down version of what I told the guard captain. We're here to buy cannons for a ship that can never come into the mana wastes because it's magically handed. I'll leave off the flying part though. That's probably being enough to let them know their own weapons won't be used against them. If you want to gloss over the beruracrat (sp?)part that's fine. "

Captain Vimes introduces Sparel and Tris to the magistrate at the magistrate's palace/office, a large and sumptuous dwelling made of white stone, pillored and with tall windows. The magistrate himself is a thin, short man with a pointy chin and an even pointier, longer nose. He has balding black hair and thin lips, which he smacks with disapproval at Sparel's tale.

"So," he says, "You wish to purchase cannons from us. You must be made aware that the cannons are in very short supply - they are quite difficult to create, so do not expect to pay for them with an IOU or a "pretty please"."

"How many, and of what type, were you looking to purchase? By when would you like your order filled out, and how were you intending to pay?"

Annoyed at the hoops and his current effectively powerless predicament Sparel tries to hide the fact and be pleasant. Were we anywhere, but an anti magic zone Sparel would have put this weasel nosed buerecrat (sp?)in his place. For now he must bide his time and be pleasant. He'll attempt to make this as short as possible.

"Payment will be in gold. The sooner we can get them the better. If we could purchase some that have already been forged that would be ideal. If you need proof of ability to pay you can accompany me to the ship and I will show you. I assure you we're prepare to pay handsomely. If this business can be done with speed and efficiency, I'd consider throwing in a bonus. Perhaps for the one who can arrange such a thing. "

Sparel lets the suggestion hang in the air.

i, the player have forgotten how many and what kind need. Sparel would have told the man though."

The magistrate crosses his arms. "You wish for six fiend's mouth cannons. Well, that certainly is a tall order, and you really ought to expect to pay a small fortune for it."

"It is possible for us to deliver an order of that size, but it won't come with transportation. And we can deliver the cannonballs as well. You may have to remain in the city for some time - not years, or excessive months, but perhaps a few weeks, while we forge any patchups in your order and prepare it. And you would need to pay half in advance. When are you capable of paying by?"

He takes out a small pad of paper and a pen, and he begins to to jot down numbers and calculations.

"All in all, you'll owe us quite a bit of money. For the speed of the transaction, a small fee of...two thousand gold will be processed. Besides that, one hundred and ten thousand gold pieces will be owed for the product itself. It comes out to a total of one hundred and twelve thousand gold pieces."

He slides a cheque forward, with his name, Sparel's name, a few lines for signatures, and the number "112,000" on it. "Fifty-six thousand of which will be owed at the beginning of your order process."

Without even batting an eye at the number Sparel says,

"When can you start? "

When he says when they get the half.:

"Today then."

Sparel will then get the details of where to deliver payment including whatever is needed to get into and out of the city.

"No delivery? *Sigh* Tris mutters to herself. It looked like she would have to contend with this blasted place a bit longer.

"you'd think for the price they could float it down river. *sigh* Perhaps we should hire a squad of mercenaries to guard it while it comes up river. Relatively speaking it should be fairly inexpensive. "

Baring any unforeseen logistics here's the plan:

-Inform Tris and the captains of the events of the day including all parts of this plan and the new crew members.

-Instruct the water elemental to bring the crew back to the ship and otherwise follow the captains and Tris's instructions.

- Find somewhere appropriate to call the air elemental to bring me back to the ship. Somewhere high that it can swoop in and take me out quickly.

-Inform the crew members left behind of the events of the day.

- I'll be heading back to the ship to work on creating some sort of floating strongbox. Preferably with a disguise of some kind.

Anyone who wishes to come with me can, but if too many want to i'll have to check the carrying capacity of the air elemental.

On a related note, how much does 56,000 GP weigh? It may be relevant soon.

i missed the part about signing the papers. I would do that.

Back at the ship

Lu yawned and lazily stretched her arms. It was good to feel the sun on her scale- skin!. She was laying on the deck of the ship which she currently shared with only one other soul*: Aeisha. The enigmatic 'mother' of the ship. Lu glanced towards the helm - there she was. She keeps better watch over that then a wyrm over his hoard! she thought with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. Ah well, that day will come ... She smiled and looked up at the sky again, imagining how it would feel to fly in this form. Most peculiar certainly.

I just thought you should know that Lu is also contributing to our efforts ^^

*The are probably a pair of familiars here too

The magistrate and Sparel shake hands as Sparel signs the form. With the transaction completed, the mage decides that it's past time to move on to other things - namely, getting on with the payment and escaping the Mana Wastes for good.

Doing a few preparations, Sparel decides to leave Tris and Vimes in the city for the purpose of making sure the deal doesn't destabilize, and contacts the captains that night with plans to go back to the ship. He finds Belor in a nearby warehouse, having scoured the place for valuables but found only mundane trade goods - like furs, nonperishable food, and clothing. He explains to them his plan for the air elemental to swoop them out of the city, and that night they climb a tower and signal the elemental.

A day and a half's uncomfortable journey later, the trio find themselves back on the boat, and Sparel immediately busies himself preparing a small basket to carry their small fortune in gold. It doesn't take long for him to fashion the simple thing with magic (a luxury he missed for the time they were in Alkenstar) and he immediately hops aboard it (after a few hours' nap in his cabin) and rides back to Alkenstar, 56,000gp in tow. Another day and a half and he has the first half of the payment and 2,000gp in the pocket of the magistrate, and the order starts. With the bribe, the magistrate is actually very cooperative, and it takes merely two weeks for the order to get put together. During that time, Sparel helps Vimes to try and convince people to join their venture. Unfortunately, none of those that he asks about it seem to be very much into the idea, and by the time the order of six cannons and the accompanying cannonballs is ready, the only person Sparel and Tris are leaving Alkenstar with is Captain Vimes (or former Captain, as Belor and Praetorius are captains aboard the Good Intentions and Vimes is quitting his job). One more gold shipment brings the second half of the payment to the magistrate and everyone is on their way by way of the barge that Sparel created and the elementals' pushing abilities.

Thus, only three and a half weeks after their start in Alkenstar, the crew is all back together again aboard their ship, cannons in tow and being installed, and with a new crew member - the dashing and lean Vimes.

Finally back! Tris thought happily as the barge made upon shore. With leaping, almost dancelike steps, the sorcerers made her undignified way out of the mana wastes. A quick spell and she flies, laughing and praising the return of magic.
