Shackled City (Pathfinder) - GM_Chris

Game Master Chris Shannon 719

This will be the Shackled City adventure path using the Pathfinder rule set. However, the existing deities (i.e. St. Cuthbert, Pelor, Wee Jas) will not be converted to similar Golarion gods.

Alexander returns with a sandwich. The crust of the bread is crisp, the inside tender. The meat is sliced thinly and heaped high. Atol recognizes many of the greens from his garden, although they look a bit wilted as his garden has been tended by his inexperienced brother during the week.

"Ahhh. Alexander I missed you. I feel I've been gone for months! Thanks for the sandwich, and for sending me to the bar the other day. Both are exactly what I needed. I have to go now, but we must catch up soon."

Atol munches more or less happily as he follows Finneas back to the bar from where this all began less than a week ago.

Dyrant is somewhat struck by his reception at the Slippery Eel.

"Uhm...thanks. It was the doing of St. Cuthbert. Without his angels lending us his strength, we would not have fared so well."

Dyrant will launch into an quick impromptu sermon on the role of faith and St. Cuthbert in his success of the mission.

I still got it. I was born to have a flock... *sigh*

Dyrant is oblivious.

Dyrant eats the stew, appreciating the new meat, but missing the grizzle and odd bits that made it taste so good.

Glimmil stands watching as the others head off to their desired destinations.

".. right as rain."

Well, a little more concern at my vanishing wouldn't have hurt.

Glimmil scampers out to the church's wide front doors and whistles for Cogwheel. Finding the Keoish Hound barking at a tittering chipmunk, Glimmil smiles while thinking of the more innocent matters in life and heads home for his mother's cooking and to share tales about his bravery.

Kneeling beside his bed at night, he looks up to the ceiling and prays.

"Glorious Glittergold!
Today you see I was so bold.
Tales of my heroics forever told.
Those returned who would be sold.

My prayer to you - I hope you hear
For in my heart I have a fear
I cannot protect those I hold dear
If you allow me soon to disappear!"

Trusting in his faith, Glimmil hops into bed and his sleep is so deep, it rivals Atol's afternoon nap.

Skipping to next day for Glimmil and his shield, but others can still roleplay, investigate, etc, the previous day.

Glimmil wakes the next morning completely healed Yeah, it should take a couple days, but this goes better with the storyline. He heads to Skie's with an arm and dog load of equipment to sell and lusting after a magic shield among other things.

Skie greets him excitedly and with relief. "I tried to find you yesterday when I heard the news of your success, but I couldn't find you at the church or the tavern. I heard you had caught the vanishing, but you appear fine. Why didn't you come see me?"

As luck would have it, Skie does have a magic shield in stock that you can have cutomized elsewhere.

Atol and Finneas walk into a bar...

Atol walks over to Dyrant's table, and sits quietly next to him as he did so many days ago before the teaching of the stew. Not quite sated after the most excellent sandwich Atol considers getting some of Dyrant's favorite stew.

So many things have happened. My head is still spinning. Dyrant is the rock sitting there so confidently that sneer on his face as always. Ahh to be so certain in one's path!

Aroon almost bounces with glee as he welcomes Atol and Finneas. I'm guessing Atol still might look like hell. As he gets closer he notices Atol's condition. "I had heard, but it is still hard to believe. It is a shame that only a few who meet an untimely death can be saved, but if one was ever worth saving...IT WAS THE HERO OF CAULDRON... who even now comes to regain his strength with our fabulous food."

Many of the patrons have a befuddled look as they observe Atol and glance down at the grease and grizzle in their bowls.

Atol and Finneas receive heaping bowls of "today's" special loaded with good meat, fresh vegetables, and expensive spices.

Dyrant takes note of Atol's entrance (really hard to miss, despite his attempt to ignore) and sighs.

The simpleton found me...probably here to rub more of his divine experience in my face. The beloved of the Church!

Dyrant looks to the heavens for patience and requests another bowl of stew from Aroon. "Extra grizzle if you would."

As Atol sits down, Dyrant will affix an icy stare at him, unable to contain his contempt or his curiosity.

"How was it? Where did you go? Did Cuthbert send you back personally?" Dyrant's voice drips with jealousy.

Finneas is taken aback by the venom from Dyrant, but settles in to his stew. If there is anything unusual about it the half-orc takes no note of it, eating as many bowls as Aroon will bring.

"Dyrant have you seen Glimmil? He disappeared after Atol woke up and it seemed he had the Vanishing. In all the excitement over Atol I shamefully forgot about him."

"I don't remember actually. I'm sorry. I'll try and remember next time."

Atol tries desperately to remember something worthy of Dyrant's question, but fails.

What did happen? Did I really die, or was I just mostly dead all day? I certainly don't feel myself quite yet.

"I was probably sent back for my failings. There is still much to do."

Atol sighs wearily into his soup, stirring the pieces with his spoon.

He looks up to Dyrant, "What should we do now? What's next for us? Glimmil has the vanishing?! We must take him to the church at once!"

Atol moves to stand.

Atol takes another drag through the soup.

"Yes, I too hope it will be many years from now. I may not remember everything, but I remember that grab that crushed me. Ouch."

Dyrant looks to the heavens again.

Angel, did you not at least say hi? Or could you not bide by him as well?

Finneas shrugs his massive shoulders.

"Head back to the Malachite Hold, drag up all the junk we found down there and sell everything that isn't the full plate or useful to somebody, then take a much deserved break. After that...who knows? Tracking down the sold slaves would most likely kill us. We barely survived the Malachite Hold, and poor Atol here didn't."

"There are some loose ends we need to track down from Jzadirune, if you know what I mean. Then we still have to deal with the other end of the kidnapping ring, the ones that helped the slavers kidnap people. Whatever all that means."

Finneas goes back to his stew, the effort of so many words having clearly drained him of the few reserves he maintained after the Malachite Hold.

Dyrant looks at Finn and smiles at the unexpectedly long, detailed, and thoughtful reply from the man.

"You have made me smile, Finn. Thank you."

That was unexpected.

Dyrant, while slurping his stew, will begin to make a mental checklist of things to do.

1) Sleep. For the love of all Gods, sleep. Then pray. Pray and pray.
1a) Consider if I need a cudgeling.
2) Gather all the loot. (I think this has been handwaved, but wanted to put it down.)
3) Sell the loot, as appropriate. See above.
4) Talk to Ghelve, Skie, and a few others about the sketches he made and the monsters they encountered. Never too late to learn more.
5) Work on my appraising skills. Lots of gems to sell.
6) Check in with Skie on his requested goods (Pearls).
7) Find some time to scribe some scrolls.
8) Read. Haven't had time to read recently.
9) Talk to Ghelve about magic...I think he might know a bit more than he lets on. If not, maybe Starbrow will help me.

Dyrant is largely silent as he finishes his stew.

Strangely enough, he feels more contented with Atol there as if he is more complete, despite his irritation with the simpleton.

Things just feel more right with him around.

His invitation to sup and drink having been apparently ignored by Dyrant, Dr. Toffitt quietly withdraws from the site of Atol's rebirth. He wanders the streets of this city that is so new to him, wary of its shadows.

Since arriving in the city less than a fortnight ago, the Doctor has sought out opportunities to tend the infirm, even while lacking the healing talents of his clerical competitors. He knows that his book-learning has yet to make him more than a passable nurse. His thoughts are full of the blood that he has spilled, and his ongoing struggle to find it distasteful (even though the beast in him glories in it).

His walk takes him past the orphanage, where the boy with disturbing benefactors sits in his bitterness. He stops for a minute outside the Slippery Eel, thinking to join whichever companions have found their way there. He reconsiders, and moves on to the small boarding house he currently calls home.

The landlady, Madame Rumplemerry is a friendly old halfling whose many progeny govern the house like a clan of brownies—rarely seen, but managing to sew and re-cobble and even sharpen boarders' belongings under boarders' noses. The boarders themselves are a strange motley—a few struggling bards, lads who performed in maids' garments, rent boys and other unwanted misfits.

In exchange for his meager medical talents, Rumplemerry gave the Doctor free room and board, including a room in the attic (cheapest anyway since it was most likely to be consumed in a fire).

It was here that Toffitt had pieced together his barely adequate alchemist's lab and the record of his research. Tonight, he decides, he will apply the knowledge gleaned from these latest adventures. Of greatest interest—a sample of the goo that had been the mimic gong.

The transmutative properties are most fascinating. If I could derive the composition of this sample, I could perhaps enhance my simpler formulae so that they adapt themselves to the physiologies of others.

Toffitt sets about lighting a burner and filling glass tubes with the radicals needed to break down the mimic's remains. He works late into the night before his efforts take hold. A chirurgeon in name and now in deed! Now if I can only learn to rectify curses...

The Doctor is so ecstatic that he knocks on the door of his downstairs neighbor and occasional... companion, Carts Polarie. I really should rest, but this calls for a celebration.

Somewhat late into the next day, Toffitt seeks out his adventuring companions, first at the Slippery Eel, then at Ghelve's, and lastly at the Temple of Cuthbert. He is brimming with enthusiasm.

"My friends, I have made a discovery that may pave the way for manmade miracles! Meaning no disrespect, but perhaps we will be able to find a cheap, mundane cure for this plague and many other afflictions, after all. If you will consent, I would like to join you in seeking out even more of the secrets of this most amazing city."

25 miles one way at 3/4 speed for mountain/hill road/trail. Light horse can only cover 36 miles at 3/4 speed in an 8 hour travel day unless you ride it to death. Also, the roads are only "mostly" safe.

Perhaps this is not the time to rush off like some young student chasing a theory with no evidence. I suspect those half elves might be part of the Striders of Fharlanghn, which probably can be reached at Starforest in Hollowsky. While I would like to question them about the orphans, especially this special child that draws the attention of one so exalted as to command beholders, that activity will need to wait for now.

Perhaps someone in the city acts as a contact for the Striders?

If he has a chance to engage in casual conversation with Dr. Toffitt, he will share his hunch about the half-elves and ask for the learned specialist's opinion.

At some point during the next morning's discussions, Toffitt discusses the Fharlanghnites with Silfr.

"I fear that I am not well acquainted with Fharlanghn, nor his worshippers in this region. My own studies have been all too specialized these last years, to the degree that I find myself ignorant of such important matters."

"However, if you wish to learn more about the orphans it may be best instead to enquire at the orphanage. Perhaps they have some record of the boy, Terram and his origins. And then there is the boy himself. He is understandably of ill favor towards me, but perhaps Silfr the mighty sunderer could coax some clues out of him."

Dyrant sleeps well that night. After all, it was a heck of a day...a long battle, a sad battle, then more fights, then some good news and a miracle of sorts.

Despite all that, Dyrant is up for his shift, still watching the door at the appointed hour, taking his turn at watch.

St. Cuthbert blessed us yesterday with strength to survive. All hail St. Cuthbert.

Like every morning, Dyrant will break out his prayer book and prayer box and speak to his Angel, his muse, his inspiration, his connection to St. Cuthbert. He is pleasantly surprised when his Angel reveals unto him new prayers to chant and new ways to unleash Cuthbert's will upon those who would harm Cauldron or his companions.

The Saint has blessed me again. I have grown a bit in his eyes. Truly, yesterday's events have even reached the heavens.

That puts Dyrant in a good mood and he takes extra time with Angel to double check the prayerspell and truly understand what the words mean so that when he needs them, he can recall them clearly.

I shall blind my enemies with angels and they shall know no safely. I shall bind my enemies with golden strings of regret and they shall not flee.

The ritual process (and seeing Finn and Atol safe) puts Dyrant in a good mood. Things are going well.

Things are going well.

Sometime during the 6th day, Dyrant will walk in Dyrant's shop. Tygot is reclining in a leather chair and looks up with a smile on his face. "Good afternoon, sir."

The halfling pats the odd looking dog with yellowish-brown fur at his side and stands up. He seats you at a dark oak table with intricate scrollwork of jungle vines. "May I offer you some tea or other refreshment?"

After finding out what Dyrant and others present would like, he will return quickly from the kitchen with the requested beverages along with a plate of small cakes, muffins, scones, and other delicacies. "Sit. Enjoy."

The dog sighs, gets up from what looks to have been a cozy spot on a rug and sits next to Tygot who seats himself at the table.

Tygot examines the items brought by the party.

Deep green spinels (100,50) - 100, 100

"These are a gorgeous pair of spinels. A jeweler will be able to craft them into a pair of fine earrings."

Violet garnets (750, 250) - 500, 250

"These are also quite nice. However, this one has a crevice which will be quite noticeable in any light. They should still make for good necklaces though."

silver crescent moon pendant on a silver chain (30) - 30

"Simple, but elegant. It will be a good gift for some newly dating couple."

engraved stone bowl (20) - 30

"I do not recognize these criss-cross designs, but they are most pleasing to the eye. I'm sure some husband will happily purchase it."

chunks of blue quartz (15,5,10,15,10,10) - 10 each

"Quartz, even blue quartz, is just not that exciting, but artisans always find some use for it."

carnelians (50, 75, 25, 25) - 75, 50, 50, 50

"These are fine specimens. An engraver will happily turn these into offical seals or signet rings."

peridots (75, 75, 75, 25) - 100, 75, 75, 75

"These too are good examples of their kind. With the proper cutting they will adorn a necklace or pendant."

white pearls (100, 150) - 75, 100

"Pearls are nice, but it always takes a lot of them to make anything good."

pink pearl (250) - 350

"However, with something like this for the others to play off of, the effort is worth it.

aquamarines (500, 500) - 500. 500

"These are magnificent! Properly displayed on a gold stand it will be a beautiful conversation piece in some noble's home."

ivory horn set with bloodstones (450) - 300

"This piece is very, uh, interesting. Perhaps some buyer will be interested, but most likely someone will buy it just to remove the bloodstones."

Dyrant will find all of Tygot's appraisals reasonable except for the horn. In regards to the horn, Dyrant is convinced of it's worth.

"Good day, sir. Oh tea would be lovely. Does it come with gristle? No? Oh, no matter. I'm sure it's very tasty."

Dyrant tries to be nice, sipping his tea politely.

"What a lovely dog you have there. What breed is that?"

Ugly b@%#&, no where near as nice as Cog. I can't tell which side is the front...maybe they've taught it to walk backwards.

"We recently explored a bit of the Under-Cauldron, found a few nice old pieces of jewelry that will probably fetch high prices due to their backstory and unique designs." Dyrant will carefully unload the assorted gems & jewelry onto a piece of cheesecloth.

Dyrant will scritch the ears of the dog while pretending the dog is Cog.

Cog is a good boy.

"Now that particular gem came from a large pile guarded by a mimic. Have you heard about a mimic? Let me explain what happened..." Dyrant will give a bit of history behind where they found each piece along with whatever danger was surpassed to earn the treasure.

Dyrant will munch on a scone while he talks.

"I think you'll like the sad story behind these next pieces," Dyrant holds up the stones from the pincher bots that kilt Atol, "..these here were recovered heartstones that powered deadly pincher machines that laid waste to our party. I tore there hearts out myself as I was so griefstricken from the fact they killed Atol."

Outside of providing backstory, Dyrant will spend much time comparing Appraisal techniques and ways to evaluate the goods so next time he might do a better job with it. Dyrant will ask pointed questions, but mostly to ascertain that he understands valuations and properties more than anything else.

I really should invest in a magnifying glass and merchant's scale, eh? Maybe when I get some free cash. Dyrant thinks as he notices the exact flaws Tygot pointed out while using a borrowed magnifying glass.

At the end of the selling session, Dyrant feels that he has learnt enough to let the value of the horn go in payment for the education he has received.

Today was a good day of learning...and free scones!

Sometime that morning...

Atol heads to his cell at the Church of St. Cuthbert. He secludes himself within and carefully lays out parchment, ink and quill.

I can do this.

He begins to write trying to keep his hand steady and sure. He wishes he had a little more food in his belly to keep his strength up, but there's nothing for it now but to press on.

It grows cold in the dimly lit cell. The only sound the light scratching of quill on paper and the occasional breathing when Atol remembers.

Three hours later he emerges. He's cold and sweaty under his heavy robe, and his hands slightly quiver. Nonetheless in his ink stained hands he clasps his first scroll, Cure Light Wounds. He stands outside his cell for a moment, "Oh my."

...Then he rushes to find his brother to tell him this news. He can scribe scrolls!

The dog moves its head away from Dyrant. Assuming Dyrant persists in trying to touch the dog, it will disappear and reappear on the other side of Tygot.

"Sorry about that. Lepook isn't much for touching. At least he didn't take your hand off."

Tygot listens to Dyrant at first, but then rushes to get some paper and starts scribling notes.

"That's great! Conversation pieces with the conversation already started. I'm going to have a friend write this up in flowing script. If you come back and sign some sheets, I'll give you an extra 10% for everything." (1894.75 gp total)

"Should we divide our efforts and so conquer this question from two avenues of approach? I propose the envoy to the orphanage be myself, where I may inquire of the boy's parentage without the reminder of your creative approach to rescue."

"I consider your special medical knowledge to be invaluable though on the flanking of this mystery, as someone must have been present at the child's birth. A midwife, a cleric, a helpful student of medicinae. Even the vile filthy witch has been known to help delivery children, though they are just as likely to eat them. Doctor Toffitt, would you find it agreeable to make such inquiries?"

If Toffitt wants to come to the orphanage and make a gift of the sundered bow Silfr wouldn't protest.. just trying to chase down sources

A quick peek at the past.

Glimmil visits the Church of St. Cuthbert in the morning and Jenya welcomes him into her office. "I'm sorry that your god has not answered your prayers. Hopefully, St. Cuthbert will hear mine."

It takes several minutes for Jeyna to casts the spells. She praises Cuthbert during this time, but does not say anything derisive of Garl Glittergold and his paladin before her.

Atol will request an audience with Jeyna at her convenience over the next few days....

"Thanks again for bringing me back. I'm sure I was having a wonderful time, but I can't remember it. Still, I feel I have things to do here that should not be avoided. Among them is this Vanishing Disease."

"We have two items which we believe might be carriers of the vanishing disease. Rather than destroy them, as they are magical, do you think a Cure Disease cast upon them would fix the problem? If not a Cure Disease, what about a Remove Curse?"

It seems to me there must be a way to cleanse these objects of this horrible effect!

"Also, has anyone else come in here looking a little pale? There may have been another man infected who came here for healing. It's unlikely, but I thought I'd ask since you're here."

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Jenya welcomes Atol into her office. "I hope you are doing well. Next week we will finish your recovery."

Upon hearing of Atol's request, "I will try though I detect no magic besides that of the item."

Jenya casts a remove curse. Interesting. There was something there."

This will take a couole days, but she will be able to remove the curses.

"As to your other concern, I have not heard of anyone else with the Vanishing."

After selling the jewelry to Ghelve, Dyrant will return to Ghelve's with the sack of gold and mete out 6 equal shares.

"Here you go. It was a good day of selling. Did I mention the free scones?" A bit of drool escapes Dyrant's lips as he remember the scones.

I hope we find more stuff to sell soon...free scones!

Dyrant will spend the rest of the day in quiet prayer and scribing.

Dyrant will scribe a scroll of Web (DC 13), Glitterdust (DC 13), Comprehend Language, & Mage Armor. (-175 gp).

Dyrant is feeling more refreshed after his quiet day of contemplation, happy to have time to commune with Angel and reflect on the prayerspells that Angel imparts to him.

I could use another day of rest. My ribs are still bruised from where Atol 'helped' me remember my duty and obligations.

M Steinneblin (Rock Gnome) Paladin 16/Cavalier 1

"Thank you Jenya!" Glimmil beams with gratitude.

"And praise to the Saint Cuthbert!" Glimmil adds, knowing the Cudgel-folk like to mention their god often.

I'm just glad they didn't try to cudgel the vanishing from me!

Glimmil leaves a handful of coins in the donation basket, hoping the church can afford other means of entertainment for their flock.

Maybe a harpsichord...

Not sure if it's Silfir, Toffitt, or both, or others(?) visiting the orphanage.

Mother Taskykk will greet whoever arrives with open arms. "Welcome to our home. I expected you would return with questions for the children. I just ask you to be gentle and patient with them."

When asked about Terrem's history she will advise that she is unaware of anything different about him. "It's the all too common sad story of parents dying when the child is young. His parents died when he was a newborn and the boy was brought to the orphanage. I didn't know his parents or how they died. In fact, I don't even know if they were local. Obviously, they had little wealth or someone would have seen to his upbringing."

"Terrem can be a dour and tempermental lad, but that's not unusual. I don't know why anyone would be interested in him."

Finneas will stand watch at Ghelve's while he is not working out.

"What is a scone Dyrant? And why are we guarding this door? Didn't we kill everything down there? Now that we're done looting we should consider sealing it permanently. Jzadirune is too dangerous for people to wander and the we've not seen any sign of the dwarves who once lived in the Malachite Hold."

Male Human (Per +7 | Fort +17 Ref +13 Will +22 | AC 29 (f28/t15) | CMD 22)

"Thank you Jenya, that's wonderful! Is there anything I may do for the church this afternoon? I thought I might tend the gardens a bit if there's nothing more pressing."

That evening, Atol beams with pride as he tells the party these items have been cleansed of the vanishing.
"We can sell them now, they are no longer a danger to others thanks to the blessings of St. Cuthbert. I feel pretty good about that."

He hands them to Glimmil so he has another excuse to visit Skie.

"Finneas, we should talk to the city watch and see about either sealing it up, or claiming the Hold as our own. I think I like the light too much to dwell underground however so I'd vote for sealing it up."

Come the morning and the completion of his watch on the door, Dyrant will speak aloud of his plans for the day (not sure who else is about).

"I have a notion that I should attempt to learn a bit more about the abominations we met last week. I don't know much about Bluecrater Academy nor Weer (of Weer's Elixirs), but I thought I'd spend some time today trying to do some research and/or finding some nice books to read. If anyone would like to join me, I'd appreciate the company."

Please not Atol. Please not Atol. If he shows me that scroll he wrote ("All by myself!") one more time...

Dyrant will pack up his sketches to take with him.

* * *

At Weer's Dyrant will enter and look around. He is looking for unique and fun items, books of lore that might help him understand the dangers of the UnderCauldron, and general antiquities.

If he can manage not to annoy Weer too much, he might engage him in conversation.

Dyrant is casually looking for (though he doesn't know he is looking for it) a Chronicler's Kit.

Chronicler's Kit:

From Pathfinder Society Field Guide:

Chronicler’s Supplies: This bundle contains a map case, 2 vials of ink, 2 inkpens, 10 sheets of paper, 2 blank journals, a pound of fine powder for drying ink, and a 20-foot measuring cord. 40gp, 4.5lbs

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Recaping and busy today, so not much RP unless I need a break to keep from hurting someone.

Story summary #4

Day 6 - Godsday
- Glimmil is cured of Vanishing.
- Rest of loot is brought up from Malachite Fortress
- Loot is sold, items bought or ordered
- Scribing of scrolls, mixing of potions

Day 7- Watersday - in progress
- More scribing and alchemy
- Items with the Vanishing have the curse removed by Jenya
- Party visits orphanage
- Weapons/shields are personalized - Pahlian Gurnezarn handles orders for heroes quickly
- More loot is sold, items bought or ordered

Here are some rumors heard around town to spice things ups:

- A secret guild of halfling rouges was responsible for the kidnappings.
- The kidnapping victims that weren't rescused disappeared due to a magical disease known as the Vanishing that wiped out Jzadirune 75 years ago.
- More giant snakes have been sighted near the village of Hollowsky to the east. I bet the yuan-ti of Shatterhorn are back.
- Hookface the dragon was spotted flying over the hills to the north by some adventurers.
- First it was dark cloaked kidnappers, now goblins are are robbing and killing people in the city.
- There was a mysterious woman down by the lakeshore a few days ago. She had fiery red hair and wore some sort of bulky armor under a black tabard. She was talking to some shady looking individuals and handing them some money and weapons.

Atol spends Watersday scribing scrolls in his cell at the church. He revels in his newfound ability to make magic items!

He makes the following scrolls today:
Ant Haul, Cure Light Wounds, Remove Fear, Calm Emotions

He also waters his garden.

Halflings? I suppose the Last Laugh has a few of those. We know the kidnapped were sold. I can't do anything about Hollowsky, and I don't want to meet Hookface. Those last two rumors are something I should follow up on.

Finneas will spend more time on the last two rumors while waiting for the others to finish recovering from Jzadirune.

Male voice: We need action son. The thrill of battle, the taste of blood.
Female voice: We need education. He doesn't even know what a scone is.
I need fewer voices in my own head but I suppose that's not going to happen with you two is it now?
