Shackled City (Pathfinder) - GM_Chris

Game Master Chris Shannon 719

This will be the Shackled City adventure path using the Pathfinder rule set. However, the existing deities (i.e. St. Cuthbert, Pelor, Wee Jas) will not be converted to similar Golarion gods.

You don't need a fly check to move full speed in a straight line downward. That's called gravity.

Sure, but stopping gravity in time is probably still a fly check. ;)

No fly check to withdraw down or at a flat level and since the dragon went 5' away from you he won't get you on the second square of withdrawing. Not at my computer so going to be a couple hours until next turn.

If Glimmil spots a blow that'd take Finneas down, he will of course be using Paladin's Sacrifice to prevent it. Something to keep in mind!

Toffitt hits twice (34). Dyrant summons some more archons which move to AA27 so they can see the dragon, but still shoot wide. A barely alive Finneas withdraws to Atol who rushes up and heals him. Breath of life not needed, some the heal and channel combo.

In the meantime, Atol's archons prove to be much more accurate and zap the dragon numerous times (25 dmg). Glimmil finally gets a clear view of the dragon and his arrow strikes true (15 dmg).

The dragon breathes on Finneas and Atol before it attempts to flee the area.

FWIW, I forgot to add +2 damage for divine favor for Glimmil last round.

Round 12, Init 14

"Let's get 'im, Cog! Hy'ah!"

Glimmil "soft spurs" Cog into greater movement as he pursues in the general direction that the dragon disappeared.

Ride DC15 (Spur Mount): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23

Spur mount increases Cog's speed to 45ft. Cog takes a Run action to move 4X and cover 36 squares, ending at Y,58

"Dragon! Come back! Or... don't? We'll just follow you to your lair, or search for it ourselves! It's got a lot of gold, right?"

Swift action for a cavalier's challenge to taunt it to come back.

Glimmil aims his shot into the most recent mist into which the dragon disappeared. (Might possibly be good to keep the dragon's location secret, but I'll pick a random corner to shoot, with 1 being the closest corner, and 2,3,4 going clockwise (2=SE corner, 3=SW corner, 4=NE corner).

Misty corner: 1d4 ⇒ 1

If I read this correctly, this attack is at -8 because Glimmil's mount took the run action.

Toffitt heals and turns invisible before moving to Dyrant in the hope of not letting the dragon get away. Dyrant flies up to see if he can see the dragon. Off in the distance he can make out a large blur in the mist that is likely the dragon. Finneas takes the opportunity to heal himself and Atol heals all those around him.

Being in better shape, Glimmil races after the dragon. Cog weaves around the pools and mists of acid to give Glimmil a shot, but Glimmil finds it too hard to shoot accurately as Cog runs. Cog can't run due to the lack of line of sight and the difficult terrain, but the direction of the dragon is obvious. Cog takes Glimmil to Q-36 where Glimmil has a clear shot, aside from the mist the dragon is in, at the dragon.

Dyrant cheerfully flies back to get the rest of the Cauldron 5.2, not feeling many of his acidic wounds.

Dyrant turns to angelic orbs around him. "Angeleyes, pair up and fly about, we seek a dragon's lair, a cave and a hoard! Seek and return!"

"That reminds me of another limerick!"

Glimmil waves his hands around for all to be attentive and listen.

"There was once an overzealous warrior of Kord,
Who eagerly hunted a dragon's shiny hoard.
A big scary shadow did he attack,
Yet it was only large rocks he did whack.
Leaving him both bruised ego and broken sword!"

Throughout the recital, Glimmil hops around as if the dead dragon next to him were the big scary dragon in his rhyme.

"Or, it was something like that. It definitely involved a dragon and a sword, a hoard and Kord."

Glimmil glances to Finneas with some significant measure of excitement.

Some don't return at all, but by the time Finneas has figured out how he's going to get the dragon's body back to Cauldron a pair of eyes return and reveal what looks like a promising location for the dragon's den. Viewed from the sides, the area looks like just another grouping of misting ulcers. However, as the eye flies overhead it reveals that the ulcers form a ring around what appears to be a large dormant ulcer which is now only a hole in the ground.

Dyrant huzzahs the finding of the horde and is happy to get the party to the cave.

"Attend to the wisdom of Adimarchus! Let neither riches nor weaponry, neither allies nor enemies, tempt you from your course. Instead, spread your distractions before your rivals."
Shut up, brain! The test means nothing when there are angels to free and angelrelics to recover.
That guy was a jerk anyway.
Yeah.

Dyrant awaits Toffitt's discoveries.

The place looks as safe as the rest of the demonic plane of Occipitus. The fine mist of acid that will slowly, but surely burn the flesh from your bones hangs in the air around the still active ulcers that encircle the open ulcer. The party will have to go through 40' of mist (difficult terrain and acid damage) or fly over the 40' high mists.

"I got this, big guy! But I wouldn't mind some of your resisting spells, first."

Additionally, Glimmil is happy to accompany others as well, leaving Cog outside with Dyrant and/or Atol.

Dyrant's angel eyes swoop down into the ulcer and actually return. They reveal a murky underground lake with an island in the middle. Upon the island sit various coins and a chest.

Dyrant looks at Toffitt, judging the weight of his plan.

Certainly with only some merits, but with too much risk.

"If some of you would accompany me to the edge to aid, I'll find a way to bring the chest to us. It may or may not work, we shall see...but maybe we will learn something."

I believe some of us still have Protection from Acid going, so should be able to walk to the edge. In addition, Dyrant has a potion of resist acid (10) he'll offer about.

Dyrant will fly over the acid and hover at the entrance when others are there.

"Guard me while I summon more of our celestial friends to aid us."

Cast Summon Monster 6, summoning huge air elemental.

Dyrant addresses the summoned elemental in a series of whistles and air pops.

Auran:

"Bring me that chest and it's contents to me here on the ledge. If you cannot lift it, drink this elixir and try again. If it is locked, break it open and return with the contents. Focus on coins last, items and gems first. Go like the wind."

Blessing of St. Cuthbert on the elemental and Cog.

Toffitt sighs. A grande plan except it leaves a whored of coins. We'll need those if I'm to continue my research... "Perhaps we should make our bed within the ring of mist tonight. I'll warrant we'll have fewer visitors." [ooc]Or am I misreading? Are the mists in a ring?[/i]

The air elemental goes for the chest, but as it reaches that point the water level of the cavern suddenly rises, almost completely filling it. The elemental heard something in the water, but can't pinpoint it more than that.

I put Atol and Finneas on the edge of the hole since they still had acid resistance. Toffitt and Glimmil can be there also if they like. I didn't want to drag out preparation posts too much since Dyrant had a fight starting action.

Round 1, Init 1

Dyrant grumbles as the cave seems to shrink and the water rises.

A trap! Who could have known?!

Cuthbert would know. Trust in the Cudgel.

Dyrant rises to 20' above the hole and wonders how there is steaming acid coming from the ground that covers the hole.

Dyrant readies an angeldust for anything coming out of the water.

There is no acid coming from the hole with the lake. The acid mist is coming from the surrounding active ulcers.

Round 1, Init 19 {N10}

So I take it that the mist carries through to the edge of the hole? In that case, Toffitt would have drunk the potion offered by Dyrant using Alchemical Allocation (leaving him with a potion bottle full of backwash). He would have been at the edge of the water. Let's say N10.

The ulcer I have is from this encounter. I guess I should remember to act with the elemental, eh? DUH.
