1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thrown into chaos after the death of the god Aroden, Cheliax found a new spiritual guide to help tame the resulting lawlessness and destruction—Asmodeus. Dominated today by the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune, Cheliax is a land of inflexible order, like a rigid steel blade tempered in the fires of Hell. It is a land where nobility and virtue take second place to a ruthlessly imposed harmony. It is a place where talks of past glories are only whispered in the dark, where heroic ambitions are kept to oneself, and where normal people strive to blend into the safe anonymity of the crowd. Like the fading warmth of twilight, Westcrown, the country's former capital, remains but a specter of its former glory, its ancient and eclectic architecture dominated by a crumbling northern quarter filled with an unseen menaces and its nights haunted by a twilit plague of deadly shadows. Paizo.

Don't know about you, but that place sounds like it needs heroes really badly! Hello all, again. I find myself with much time on my hands and my two current PbPs are progressing at a slow rate (one is new and the other is down to 3/5 players due to character death/incapacity - combat is challenging in my games!), so I decided to start a new one and I chose CoT for its obvious need for heroic deeds. As I want and hope for a solid pace, I'm going to request the all applicants be able to post multiple times per day on average (at least twice). I feel that livens the game's energy as well as my energy as a DM/GM. One post per day slows things down to a crawl, especially in combat. Hope that's not too unreasonable.

As before: With regards to my DM-ing style, I tend to modify/alter/and sometimes completely replace parts of an AP, as it fits my style and the story (and that may happen with Part 2, if we get that far - not really into the whole play/drama thing, we'll see). As I said before, combat is challenging and dramatic and I root for the players to succeed!

Submission: Not looking for a number crunch unless that is your style, but a feel for the character's appearance, personality, and background (ties to Westcrown). Please download the free Campaign Player's Guide. Link

I want the characters to be from Westcrown or have significant ties to it, as the campaign only works if you care about this place.

Mechanics: 1st level, max hps, 20 pt build, 2 traits (1 must be Campaign), average gold, and classes and races from PFRPG and APG. Tiefling will be allowed but most likely, only 1 will be selected for the party and they are considered second class citizens. Magus allowed as well but no gunslinger, samurai, or ninja. Archetypes/concepts/spells from UM and UC ruled on case by case basis but most will likely be allowed. Please post your timezone in your application. I am in the EST.

I will be accepting 4 applications (5 if they're really good) and the deadline to submit is Monday March 5th, by 12 noon EST. I reserve the right to advance this deadline if a sufficient number of applications come in. I have been pleasantly surprised by the interest in my games before and I hope that continues.

Any questions, let me know.

dotting....

Long time no see Lucendar!

KK here how about something like this!

Dotting. And I don't suppose a Synthesist would be allowed?

Hey KK, it has been awhile. Where's the background related to Westcrown?

Going to have to say no to the Synthesist.

@GM Lucendar

Please see my submission for Tuktuk, gnome alchemist recently short on employment. Thanks in advance for your consideration!

I can, and do, post multiple times per day

Background:
Tuktuk came to Westcrown to apprentice to one of the dozens...no hundreds...of summoners who traveled to the great city to make a living dealing with the various demons and devils that make Cheliax their home. It wasn't long before the small fellow learned that his talents lie in other areas, and summoning with a safe circle was a concept that he'd just never get. Three botched summoning and two half-devoured fellow apprentices later, Tuktuk was asked...kindly but firmly...to find where his other talents may lie.

Downtrodden...for a gnome...which was still relatively happy, Tuktuk thought of the things that made him happy and, more importanty, kept his interest. It seemed to him that some of his favorite times where when he was testing a new concotion that could blow up in his face. The excitement...the danger...he was always on edge, with just his talents and knowledge keeping him from being the next statistic. That was what kept him happy...alchemy.

Feeling rejuvenated, Tuktuk opened a small practice to show his wares...little did he know that the Order of the Rack would force him into immediate, heavy taxation, so much that he couldn't keep his shop without contracting with nefarious denizens of those places that the elite of Cheliax came from. Well, he would have none of it. Tuktuk closed up his shop after only a week of business, and set to ply his trade to focus on his own wishes...that one such as him could do business as he should, without fearing that the next customer in the door may be one who wants your soul.

appearance:
Tuktuk is a small gnome, even by his race's standards. He's short of arm and somewhat pudgy, and the features of his face are a bit cherubic in nature. Chubby cheeks, a ready smile, and wide eyes make him seem almost childish, and his diminuitive size does little to refute such a belief.

Tuktuk is ready to smile, usually happy, though recent events have left him less than happy with the people around him. He's jaded, but only against those who rule against the common man....or gnome...with an iron fist, watching everything that they do. His well-being has been taken from him, his shop closed, and he has little left to lose...a dangerous combination in a gnome who enjoys blowing stuff up

Crunch needs lots of work, of course

Here is the work up for a halfling bard. The crunch still needs a few minor tweaks, but the Description, Personality and Background are done.

Liberty's Edge

I am waiting to hear from one or two other recruitment threads, some of which are recruiting over the next two days. I want to create a character for this one so badly. Most of the other times I've played this one, the campaigns died off. I have a Paladin of Arazni in mind. (I know that's strange, but he's the last of his family to uphold the oaths they made, and he doesn't regard her death (or undeath) as a hindrance to his faith in what she may one day be restored to. He is a member of the Order of the Phoenix (one of three branches of Arazni's faith that I kind of made up (non-canonical)), the one devoted to restoring Arazni from undeath back to divine life, and to her former place as Aroden's Heir.

Well, more on this character when I see if I was accepted into either of the other two.

Tuktuk, don't worry about the crunch, but could you let me know the Campaign trait?

Of course, my apologies - conspiracy hunter - knowledge local; after Tuktuk's store was shut down, he began to stick his nose well into the business of his fellow Wiscrani. At times annoying, no doubt, but he learned quite a bit about his city.

Dark Archive

I've wanted to do CoT for a while. I'm on my computer or checking my other PbP games on my mobile pretty much all day so I can definitely post 2 or more times on weekdays. Probably manage a little something even on weekends, too. I have absolutely no clue what I'd want to play but I'm going to come up with something.

Have you ever read The Lies of Locke Lamorra? Would a Sandman Bard con artist be a good fit you think? I'm not sold on the idea because I'm not sure that I'd be able to RP that sort of thing as well in writing as I could in person. The other option would be maybe a vigilante type of character. Maybe a Ninja but kind of Batman-y?

Interesting concept, Stardust. Good luck on your other PbPs.

Hey, color me interested. What are your rules about alignment?

@Yuengling: Never read it but the description on wikipedia sounds interesting. No ninjas allowed.

Rasputin: With respect to alignment, no evil is my general rule (I am looking for heroes after all).

Conspiracy hunter is mine also seems to fit for a paladin....

I will re-do the crunch soon ! ;)

Dotting for interest!

Interested, reading over the players guide once more to see what i can come up with

Great to see the interest. Thanks!

Dark Archive

I should have seen the no Ninja thing. Scratch that idea and replace it with a Sword and Board Urban Ranger. Some sort of vigilante. We'll see what ideas pop up in my brains.

would you be allowing the Samsaran race out of the Dragon Empires Primer? I worked up this cleric for a Carrion crown game but she got passed up on so I figured I would try to resubmit for this. If the race doesn't work then I'll rework into something else.

I think I need to rework some of the crunch as well as tie her to Westcrown but most of the background will be staying the same.

@Nalita: Could you rework the race? Thanks.

No problem I'll just rework everything since the point buy was different. I'll have my character up later today.

KK here!

Almost done with this re-worked PC.

If I get time, DM, I'm thinking about submitting a Charm domain based Urban Druid. Easy to imagine what that character would be doing in Westcrown.

Dotting for interest. I'm thinking of a gentleman wizard or magus. I'll try to get something posted tonight.

Here is my idea for noble born Alchemist Gregor Arcadis. I will probably take the Diabolist Raised trait and use that as the basis for some sort of inner conflict.

I'll work on the specifics of the character this weekend; however if the deadline passes and we find ourselves without a divine caster I will be happy to rework my concept to fill that role.

I am in the US Eastern Time Zone. During the week I can post quite frequently. Weekend posting will be more sporadic but it will be a rare day when i don't post at least twice.

@KK: Still don't see the background for Westcrown
@Deane: Thanks for the submission

For all applicants: What I am looking to read in your background is how your character is tied to Westcrown (family? friends? mentor?), why he/she gives a damn, and why he/she would risk his life to save it. Bad things are going on in Westcrown, people are afraid to go out at night (rumors of shadow beasts)..how does your character view all this? Is he/she willing to lead the revolution, against the Hellknights and all the powers that be in Cheliax, knowing the consequences for such revolt is torture and death? If so, why?

Hmm, heroic archetype eh?

So a true neutral borderline schizotypal personality disorder inquisitor of Norgorber wouldn't fit the bill, am I right?

I'm thinking the evil aligned god will present problems in terms of party cohesion. I'm not demanding that all party members be good, but I would suggest characters who are passionate about Westcrown, who want to make it a better place (not caring if they're dubbed revolutionaries).

EDIT: Or...it could be for selfish reasons, like the current government appropriated your family's lands and left you destitute (could fit a noble background), or revenge (they imprisoned/killed a loved one), framed you for a crime you did not commit, etc. Whatever the motive, I want the characters passionate about something..

Updated story to include Westcrown....

Feed-back is appreciated!

I am working on a cleric of Milani to submit. Would the merciful healer archetype from UC be okay to go with?

Merciful healer is fine, MoB.

Fubar wrote:

Hey KK, with paladins there is the whole social injustice/people disappearing and getting killed/tortured to motivate them but I appreciate the family angle; makes it more personal.

Dotting for interest.

Thinking unbreakable archetype fighter. (Valid?)

Working on backstory, hope to have something by EoD

Yes, valid.

Are the Oath against Fiends and Sacred Shield archetypes valid? If so then consider the following character. I'll get a background up tomorrow but he's a member of the hellknights and has a problem with the current government just to give you a brief idea of where he stands.

Not a fan of good ol' Father Skinsaw eh? Me neither, so what do you think of this:

"With the GM’s approval, an inquisitor can be devoted to an ideal instead of a deity, selecting one domain to represent her personal inclination and abilities. The restriction on alignment domains still applies."

I've been envisioning a character, name of Solomon Knox, a human inquisitor with the Trickery and Deception domain and subdomain. Solomon's ideals stem from a disillusionment with goverment and by extension the Cheliaxian state of affairs. It began with the murder of his parents, both of them "heathens" and "blasphemers" of the goddess Calistria. He has since forgone religion, but has instead taken upon himself one very specific mantra: Defiance. He has since acted as a saboteur, utilizing subterfuge and deception to fool the Cheliaxian authorities and defy them at every turn, yet he has not yet realized the freedom fighter mantra as his own. The trauma of his childhood has warped his mind a tad, but it's nothing to be concerned about. He's no rapist or murderer or devil worshiping nimrod. He's simply, well, off. His speech mannerisms are strange, sounding almost alien at times, providing his own idiosyncratic thought processes into his speech. He has a tendency to trail off mid sentence or ignore somebody he's talking to entirely.

Schizotypal Personality Disorder

I would, with this path, pick the Diabolist Raised trait to complement his backstory.

If you give me the okay I'll develop his personality and backstory even farther. If not, please give me any suggestions that might make him more acceptable to your campaign.

Hmmm, lots of interest in this. Not completed yet, but gives a good idea of the concept. Westcrown Firebrand is the trait

Kaliana is a skilled weapons instructor who specializes in training the sons and daughters of rich merchants and noble families. When not giving private lessons, she conducts class in the courtyard behind her father's forge.

Kaliana and her father have noticed things in town, things that just are not right. People disapearing mysteriously and guards acting mroe like thugs than protectors. Kaliana has heard rumors about the beginnigns of a resitance, locals looking to make things right. If she can find them, Kaliana could put her martial skills to good use...

@mathpro - Both archetypes are fine but have an issue with being a member of the Hellknights, maybe ex-member, recently relieved of duty for his beliefs would work (the Hellknights are adversaries early in the game)
@Rasputin - I like the devotion to the ideal, definitely would like to read more about the personality and backstory
@Kaliana - like the concept, what are you thinking..fighter?

Cool. How do you feel about the spellbreaker inquisitor archetype?

Spellbreaker Inquisitor

It's fine except I have a problem with strong-willed, the 1st level ability, seems overpowered to me. Like an unlimited Iron Will feat. Maybe a +2 bonus to mind-affecting spells would make better sense.

Okay, that definitely works.

I would like to submit a character for your review. I will write a more detailed background tomorrow.

Talsin is a former halfling slave with aspirations of joining the Bellflower Network. Talsin grew up the son of a famous halfling actress whose master owned an entertaining troupe. Talsin's mother was very valuable asset for her master who endulged her clandestine assistance of other halfling slaves. Talsin has shown some of his mother's acting talent, despite being mute, and her passion for helping free his fellow halflings. He communicates with often elaborate charades and with a small chalk tablet if necessary. Talsin learned much of his monastic ways from an elderly human monk that served as troupe's choreographer. Unfortunately, it was discovered that Talsin's mother had aided a group of halfling slaves in their escape. She was tortured and killed. Their master fled with most of the remaining troupe for fear of a similar fate. The minor noble that killed Talsin's mother was himself killed for his "rash" response. Apparently, several higher nobles were not pleased at those loss of a favorite actress despite her minor indiscretions. After all, who cares about the loss of a few escaped halflings weighed against the hours of entertainment. Talsin finds himself free for the first time in his life.

The fast replies are frightening!!

Here is what I have so far for the backstory... name is 'Charles' as work in progress, but will have something better hopefully soon

background:

Charles never considered himself a bad kid, but could not call himself a good one either. He was from the poor side of town, one of the many unwanted children who were shuffled out of the more populated areas because they were an 'eye sore' to the general public. Struggling to survive, they banded together and took odd jobs around the city to get food when they could. When their childish looks started to fade (along with the noble's sympathy) they turned towards thievery to feed themselves. With the first few sorties bringing much welcome success (not to mention some wealth), it also brought the attention of the law. In short order Charles and his fellow unwanteds found themselves with the attention of the city guard at their door steps, bringing swift and merciless justice against their rag tag crew of 'deviants'. With their lack of training, and poorly equipped members, they were quickly apprehended and turned over to receive sentencing. Punishment was swift, and deliberate, endentured servitude (slavery) to those they had wronged to set it 'right' again (with some of the more violent members disappearing shortly after their 'trials').
And so Charles found himself a slave to the system that had swept him aside, the livery that adorned his body did not change that he was a but a slave. He did as he was told (least he taste the lash), and endured his 'punishment'. As the years passed Charles started to enjoy the comforts that came with being a servant of the house of Le Grange; he could walk about the grounds without fear of reprisal, and enjoy the company of some of his fellows who were enshackled with him. But the house of Le Grange had dreams of power, and would send the ignorant servants out into the city proper carrying messages and missives to further their ends: that is when the servants starting disappearing. At first it was only a few that went missing, but within a few months anyone who went outside the grounds at night would not make it back to their beds.
As the nobles' ambitions took their toll on the servant's numbers, Charles found himself fulfilling more and more duties to carry the slack. Soon graduating from liveried servant to amateur guardsman, (replacing one who had gone out for patrol during the night and never returned). He was amongst the abandoned when the Le Grange's fled the city for greener pastures and safer nights.
Now with only the shirt on his back, and a few silvers in his pocket he was free! But had nothing to show for it, most of his comrades were either dead or missing, and he still had no place to call his own. Finding work as 'muscle' he managed to make enough funds to survive, and giving what he could to the less fortunate, lest they become victims of the system like him.
Charles's beliefs often got himself into trouble, from 'obstruction of justice', (caused by him interfering with the city guards 'investigations' of suspects), to 'disturbing the peace', (voicing his opinions when they did not want to be heard). While he is has no regrets about the black eyes, bruises and jail time received from his actions, his employers did not share the same opinion and he would soon find himself looking for work once again.

I apologize if it is a bit long.. and if the name doesn't fit. And my grammar is looking to be pretty abysmal.

Why he gives a #$@!:

Charles has seen the pretty side of Westcrown, but he has also lived threw the bad, where if you aren't up to snuff, you are tossed aside into the gutter with the rest of the trash. Charles is not afraid to 'stand up' for the little guy

I think I am missing something....

Thinking of a general idea so far, of a devotee of Iomedae that has grown tired of the Westcrown wing of the faith and it's focus on the Lawful and not so much the Good ideals of the Goddess. I haven't decided whether he will be Paladin, Inquisitor, or Cleric. If Cleric I was hoping to do the Crusader archetype from UC, and was wondering what your opinion would be on the issue of how many feats they get. Archetype says one at first, fifth, and every five levels, until a max of 6 at 20th level. The mistake is either that it's a max of 5 at 20th, or there's a missing feat (maybe 3rd level) in the progression.

fast replies are good! :)

Dotting for interest. Anything against peshed-up, sadistic halfling fighters?

Yes, she would be a fighter, haven't totaly decided on what type of fighter mechanically. She will probably concentrate on skill with swords, critical hits, and disarm and/or trip maneuvers. I think that would fit nicely with her background. I also need to decide how she came to live with her father and if her mother is still around.
