@DiscoDagrin: Race/Class - human rogue? What campaign trait?
@MyThor - I would read it as max 5 at 20th
@Shadowrucker - nothing against them as long as they're looking to clean up the city

Ok, without counting the people who have dotted for interest, these are the formal submissions I have so far:

Fubar: half-orc paladin
Tuktuk: gnome alchemist
Ferro Hasslebottom - halfling bard
Gregor Arcadis - human alchemist
Poshment - gnome paladin
Solomon Knox - human inquisitor
Kaliana - human fighter
Talsin - halfling monk
Charles - human rogue (I think)

Can I get your timezones? Thank you! If I missed anyone, let me know.

EST here; typically online basically all day when awake, and I sleep very little.

Here's my halfling fighter ready for... cleansing...

essence:
You people see a tavern full of thirsty and rowdy patrons, laughing about whatever they feel. Aldis sees a room full of victims and criminals, all needing to be dealt with... properly. Many in the past have attempted to comprehend the inner workings of Aldis's mind, perishing in the attempt. His late mother, though no fault of his own, sent him to many a medicine man to cure him of his... sickness. 'Noh won knoes whaht be in deh maind ohf deh won naught willin' tah share. Noh won will evar fahnd hout heithar. Only those who wulld beh willin' tah die cun lern me mind's ehntent,' He muses. Aldis keeps an eye on everything around him, and everyone. He only helps if the price is right, of if the bodies of the fallen can be stacked ever higher...

(EST btw)

I am Central Time Zone.

My apologies...

Was going for human fighter (unbreakable archetype).
Campaign Trait is Westcrown firebrand.

Timezone is CST

CST central standard time

Kaliana wrote:
Yes, she would be a fighter, haven't totaly decided on what type of fighter mechanically. She will probably concentrate on skill with swords, critical hits, and disarm and/or trip maneuvers. I think that would fit nicely with her background. I also need to decide how she came to live with her father and if her mother is still around.

Would you be interested in linking our backgrounds a little. Perhaps you could have taught my character how to sword fight with his longsword. of course this wouldn't have to be finalized until/if we're both chosen.

@Lucendar: Would you mind if he's interested in joining the hellknights and thats why he travels to Westcrown? Obviously once things get going his views will change and it will give some great interpersonal growth to the character.

I am also CST as well...sorry forgot to mention that above.

I am EST. And yes I can post multiple times a day. Mornings are usually good, with either midday or evening being the second and/or 3rd postings. occasionally I do have work on weeekends that may innvovle limited internet. of course i would elt you know in advance and this is usually only 3-4 times a year

Sure, that's not a problem. By the way, still looking forward to the background and why a gnome became a paladin.

Liberty's Edge

Fleshed out my background a bit more. Also I'm EST and can post frequently during the week and sporadically (yet still twice a day minimum) on the weekends.

Updated List just to keep things straight for myself):

Fubar: half-orc paladin, CST
Tuktuk: gnome alchemist, EST
Ferro Hasslebottom - halfling bard (timezone?)
Gregor Arcadis - human alchemist, EST
Poshment - gnome paladin, CST (waiting for background)
Solomon Knox - human inquisitor (timezone?)
Kaliana - human fighter, EST
Talsin - halfling monk, CST
Charles - human fighter (unbreakable), CST
Aldis Cardinask - halfling fighter, EST (need more of a background and ties to Westcrown, campaign trait, etc.)

Hrm, sorry to keep bothering you, but what do you say about the History of Heresy trait?

History of Heresy

Since Solomon would be a non-theist, but would still be casting divine spells, would this trait be a contradiction or is it acceptable?

Oh, and my timezone is EST. I can post multiple times per day, but only in the evenings and all day on weekends(though not typically all day; I do have some vestigial remnants of a life).

I would rule trait is a contradiction, you're still a divine spell caster.

@mathpro18: I certainly don't mind linking our backgrounds. Considering she trains young nobles and merchants sons/daughters I don't see her being especially picky about who she trains, provided they can pay and don't cause too much trouble, though she is used to uppity young nobles. I think she secretly enjoys laying out arrogant noble young nobles.

Kaliana could have provided training to anyone who wants the connection, even if we are not both chosen, its just another part of the background. Also she would have be a familair face to many who have lived here lof a good elngth of time.

Though not as experienced as many trainers, Kaliana has a knack for teaching.

DM, ill never be able to get my character ready. I'll withdraw my name from this one. Good luck to all the applicants!

Really interested in this one. Character forthcoming, EST...

Liberty's Edge

Well, I didn't make it into one of the ones I submitted a character for, and one of my other ones (perhaps two or three) seems to be winding down for some reason.

I will go ahead and submit my paladin, Marcellius Voralion.

background:
The Voralion family once served the Church of Aroden and the Red Crusader Arazni faithfully. Marcellius' own great-great-great-grandfather even forged a bond with Aroden's Heir (then Arazni), proclaiming that all his descendants would be bound to her for as long as she required them. A prophecy was given not long after this proclamation that the Voralion family would breach their divine promise and forge pacts with devils.
The Death of Arazni was a shattering blow to the Voralion family, whose sons and daughters had been promised to her service. Still hopeful that the deity might one day rise up again, the Voralions continued their long vigil.
This prophecy of course came true, with the rise of the thrice-cursed House of Thrune, many noble families forged pacts with the new administration to preserve their nobility. The minor house of Voralion was no exception, and they eagerly turned to evil ways.
With a feat of strength and willpower, Marcellius tore away from his family, seeking out his own way of honoring the family's bond with Arazni. Though dead (and transformed), the faith is kept alive through the Knighthood of the Phoenix, who swear that one day Arazni (and perhaps Aroden) will be restored to their rightful place among the deities. Marcellius sees evil everywhere, but being raised in a city where evil and cruelty is the norm, it is not difficult to see why. Still, it makes it difficult for Marcellius to interact with others, particularly those who actually have good intentions at heart.

Human Paladin of Arazni.
Traits: Conspiracy Hunter (perception), Suspicious

Sovereign Court

And this is what he looks like. (The stats on the character profile might not be correct, but the avatar is actually pretty good this time). I'll update the stats if accepted.

@Stardust: Help wrap my mind around one thing game-wise. If the goddess Arazni is now an evil lich and basically the concubine of a super-evil ghost, how do her paladins still get their abilities (i.e. smite evil, spells, etc.?

Sovereign Court

Interesting you should ask that, I asked the same thing myself earlier (when I was generating the character).

Basically, gamewise I think it is tied up in this statement: "...but to embody the teachings of the virtuous deities they serve." In other words, the divine will of the Goddess Arazni (even if Arazni is no longer an active proponent of that will) has a metaphysical reality. One that may be mostly subsumed by Iomedae, but if the teachings of Aroden are still around and have a metaphysical reality (as is suggested in some of the books about the Great Beyond), I don't see why Arazni's teachings don't as well.

But in any event, its up to you (as the DM) to determine if you'll allow it. A version of Marcellius is also made for PFS, and the DM I introduced the character to raised his eyebrows at the suggestion, but after looking through several rulebooks and the PFS Guide, ruled that there were no rules that prevented it.

Edit: The only thing I do see a potential problem with is the 20th level Paladin ability, but I don't think we'll get that high. Most of these Adventure Paths end at 14th - 16th level.

Another Edit: Oops. Looks like 5th level ability relies on a 'god' too. I guess being a paladin requires more than they're letting on in the rule book, although I could have sworn that they said in Beta testing that it would be determined that a Paladin did not need to worship a deity... They could have changed their minds, I guess.

Liberty's Edge

Of course, I'm going by the 1st Edition Pathfinder Core Rulebook.

And looking a bit closer, even in the Ex-Paladin description, there's no condition listed that says when a deity is knocked out of commission that the Paladin loses his powers. Or that a Paladin's power relies upon a deity at all. Only on his lawful good nature, following the code of conduct, and not willfully committing an evil act.

So far, looks like Marcellius has gone out of his way to keep from breaking vows (even those made to a now fallen deity)

I can see your argument but how about Divine bond? That specifically states that you form a divine bond with your god and I don't see you bonding with a lich. I don't know how willing you'd be to play this paladin if you lost your divine bond power.

Liberty's Edge

I guess they need to clarify that in a supplement or errata or something, whether a paladin is actively bonding with their deity, or with the "teachings of the virtuous deity they serve".

Edit: You know what, I am willing to play without the paladin's divine bond feature. There might even be an archetype out there that replaces it that doesn't have other abilities that rely on the presence of a deity. I'll have to look and see, as this character wasn't originally conceived with the archetypes in mind.

Divine bond and Holy Champion are the only 2 class abilities that specifically mention deity (one bond with, the other conduit for).

Lucendar, what constraints are you placing on Tiefling Character creation?

I feel like you can't have a Westcrown story without horn-head, and none have been offered yet. I am leaning towards a Tiefling black sheep of a minor Westcrown noble family. Long in exile, a letter from her father grudgingly summons her back to the city - her brother, and heir to the family, has apparently disappeared into a "resistance movement"....

Trait would obviously be Infernal Bastard, Sorcerer class....

All tieflings must choose Infernal bastard trait, roll their tiefling heritage (1d10) and their tiefling ability (1d100), unless you take the fiendish heritage feat at 1st level and then you get to choose your heritage and roll 3 times on tiefling ability chart and pick the most favorable ability.

Loco Billo:

Loco Billo is fed up. He hates this stuck-up town. Why does he put up with it? Why indeed?

He had dreams once. "Treasure in the ruins" and all that rot.

It's why he came to this s+** hole town in the first place. Then he took to drinking, brawling and gambling....bingeing, thieving, dueling....killing even, and he found himself on the wrong end of the hard, Chelaxian law. He was doomed to the gallows ... but a local Thieftaker found some poor lady to shake down for the money to keep him alive in prison....and so they kept him there - feeding him weevil-ridden offal for the last fives years. He never found out the identity of his benefactress ... he only knows it is a woman from her writing, and the smell of the paper in the letters he received from her during his incarceration. Who is she and what does she want? Her last letter before they set him free contained a plea for him to stay in Westcrown and defend the people from the yoke of oppresssion ....and so on and so forth....what garbage!

And yet....he worked as a labourer for a while, regaining his health and saving some coppers for passage. And now he has started to prowl the night streets like he used to. The town is different. There’s something very wrong with it. Rumours of fiends among the shadows at night. Rampant police brutality. Citizens averting their eyes when you approach and shuttering their windows at the smallest commotion. Many streets, which used to be lively byways back in the day, are now sinister and deserted. Bill always knew Westcrowners as a proud and haughty people....but the folks who run the place these days are real a*&$$!@s ... and the honest townsfolk are getting the shaft. It's time for Westcrowners to stand up and take their streets back!

But why should Billo give a damn? .... what has Westcrown ever done for him? .... nothing of course ...... and yet he can't help but worry about the poor lady who purchased his freedom.

Billo has heard rumors of bands of free-thinking individuals, who meet after the citywide curfew. Perhaps they might share these concerns? Bill has learned that to cower is to die ... that one must be quick to react to opportunity, both physically and mentally. It's with sudden and swift action that many conflicts are best resolved. Maybe now is the time for Westcrowners. Well, Billo is standing...and he is ready to pounce!

Dwarf ex-con labourer,
Rogue 1
st 12 dx 17 cn 14 it 12 ws 14 ch 7

Here is my submission. New to PbP, EST and so far 0-5 for trying to get into a campaign.

Background:

Ostarian

Ostarien was born into a noble family, somewhere between lesser and higher. In corenytn his family held a few holds, warehouses and most important several businesses that supply nautical supplies (sails, ropes and barrels). He spent his early years as any spoiled noble did, idly spending his time, or spending it sneaking away from his caretakers. His family flourished as the imperial navy relied more and more on the family’s business.
Things changed as Ostarien started to enter puberty. Ostarien himself started to get sick more and more often until he was bedridden. No one could cure his mysterious ailment, its racking cough or is mysterious sores. For several years he would get sick, grow sore sand they would heal as scars.. The sores would scar his chest and lower face and he would get better long enough to get sick again, yet each time he felt fine . He would have fever dreams and shout in a strange language that he could not remember.
While he was battling his strange illness the family was dealing with ill fortune. Their warehouses were robbed, one of their holds was attacked, and one of their two barrel makers burnt to the ground.
The family came to the conclusion that Ostarien’s sickness had brought bad luck. His father formally denounced him, stripping him of his family name, kicking him from the life he knew.
Having to find work he wandered for a while with what few possessions he had. Scaring off most with his appearance he had a hard time finding work.
His younger brother found him a week later in a bottom of the barrel inn. With his contacts he arranged for him to work with a jeweler/blacksmith. Krun made jewelry, and more importantly made masks for the inquisitors. He worked by being additional security, sleeping over the shop so someone was there. His younger brother was on his way to join the inquisitors as the family was having even more issues. As the months went on, he had found his powers and in his spare time sought out any who could train him. He learned from the few he could find how to cast his spells and summon the shadows. As he heard more and more about his family he decided he had to leave. They had abandoned him and he would leave them behind and go to the capitol, westcrown and seek his fortune and his place in the most wonderful country there is, Chelix.

What ostarien doesn’t know
Ostarien is his father’s son, but not his mothers. A bastard as he is, however on purpose. His parents had made a contract with an asmodean priest, the life of their first born in exchange for greater wealth and a better place in life. However they had a plan. Ostarian got one of his serving women pregnant after the pact was made and she was Ostarian’s actual mother. Upon birth it was made that Ostarian was the actual son, his real mother being killed to keep the secret. His mother was approached by some shadowy being and told why she was there. Knowing that there was no hope for her, and that her son would be cursed she gave up her soul, in trade her son would still suffer his curse, however he would have powers to offset it.

Loose ends
Parents – fate unknown, ostarien dosent care about them if they gave up on him
Siblings – A younger brother and sister (both Half siblings). Both true decendants, he was not close to either as they were young and once he started getting sick he was kept away. He also has an older half-brother from his mother.

Ostarien has dark brown studded leather. His gear is starting to show wear, something a rich person wouldent. He wears his scarf covering his lower face, will lower it if requested. His is scarred, from the edge of his left nostril down to just above his crotch. His chest is a mass of scars thick in some places and thin in some.
He wears the scarf so he doesn’t have to deal with the initial reaction. He still feels and acts noble born in some ways, hes learned to drop the most dangerous habits.
He’s learned to skulk, hiding in the shadows till needed and to intimidate. He also has learned to bandage wounds, living thieves spread the workd about a defended shop better than dead ones.
He has never spent the night in the wild; he is slightly spoiled from his younger years.

Okuthor, you just submitted the same character concept again for my CoT game as you did for Savage Tide. And second, your oracle power at 1st level is not going to work in my PbP b/c I reveal all die rolls in combat. You may want to rethink concept.

Misfortune (Ex): At 1st level, as an immediate action, you can force a creature within 30 feet to reroll any one d20 roll that it has just made before the results of the roll are revealed. The creature must take the result of the reroll, even if it's worse than the original roll. Once a creature has suffered from your misfortune, it cannot be the target of this revelation again for 1 day.

Liberty's Edge

Very well... While this doesn't quite fit my original concept for the character, Marcellius is a Cavalier of the Order of the Star, in the protection of the Faith of the True Inheritor. {but he believes himself to be a Paladin}.

I actually would love to craft an Order of the Phoenix, but not sure how open you are to that.

@Stardust: Cavalier works, but need his background: what are his ties to westcrown? why does he care about making the city a better place?

I am on Pacific Standard Time. Really looking forward to this one by the way. I have never had the chance to play a bard and eager to see how it goes.

Liberty's Edge

Same background as before, with the family ties in Westcrown through the noble family Voralion. He cares about making the city a better place because with the death of the True Inheritor, as with Aroden's Fall, much of nobility and faith was lost. It's kind of implied in the background above, but I guess I can spell it out more.

Still interested seeing alot of paladins in the mix!

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I know... Paladins are the one thing I haven't had a chance to play yet. I have a bard, a wizard or two, quite a few sorcerers, a fighter, a magus. I'm in the mood for something different, but the creative juices aren't flowing at the moment. :(

Liberty's Edge

Allow me to withdraw Marcellius and present Jerome instead.

Character: Jerome Elhazad, Gnome Fighter (Cad)

Description: With his shock of white hair on a head that is primarily dark blue with dark violet roots, Jerome definitely stands out in a crowd. He continues his blue theme with an elegant outfit of sapphire velvet with a black leather studded armor with purple lacing. He carries himself with an ease of bearing that could make others curious as to what he's about. In combat, he seems to be at ease with just about any weapon (or tool for that matter) that comes to hand, and he takes advantage of his small stature with a surprising grace. He sometimes wears a blue cavalier hat, the wide rim folded up with a massive purple-black feather.

Traits: Westcrown Firebrand, Rapscallion

Background: As a child, Jerome became fascinated with the game of chess and other toys that challenged the mind. He proved quite an agile learner of such pasttimes and within a few years could beat most gnomish children his own age at the games of intrigue, deception, and the occasional bluff. However, it was during his adolescence, when his parents first moved to Westcrown that he found himself in quite a different scenario. While his natural inclination for strategy made him want to join the Hellknights, his parents were opposed to the idea. Witnessing the cruelty of some of their members towards those of his race helped shape his philosophy. Jerome spent his adolescence learning to fight, training his mind for various scenarios, and contemplating the possibilities of an overarmed, overweighted hellknight falling into a filth-strewn moat. It was not the dream life, where he could win by strategy and skill, a blade in his hand, but Jerome spent the years devoted to the knowledge of combat, the contemplation of logic and strategy, and the amazing ability to awaken to every possibility in the immediate vicinity. This unusual knack for awareness and perception has touched Jerome in many untold ways. For one, he views life with a particular ease of being that many other people have learned to become jealous of. It is not uncommon for him to be completely sure of himself and his abilities, even when facing down his hated opponents the hellknights. He does not defy them directly, that would be suicidal, but neither does he respect them. Jerome has mastered the art of looking bored, when in reality his mind is eagerly forming strategies and ideas to defeat his enemies.

Personality: He currently wants to help win a military campaign, particularly against the Hellknights. He had heard of some free thinking groups meeting in various locales around the city, and had put out a few feelers in some of the local taverns to see if anyone there knew anything. Not anything overt, but just enough to see if there actually was someone there who wanted to make a difference in the world, and stand up against injustice and cruelty. Jerome frequently stands up for those who have suffered such, especially members of his own race. (CG).

Adventure: Jerome is always looking for new experiences to add to his repertoire, in addition to determining strategy and skills that might be useful in bringing down his opponents. He favors drama, swift action, and a smattering of intrigue, but if the situation calls for it, careful thought and strategic maneuvering.

Liberty's Edge

Hmmm, I don't know. Is This One overdoing it? Just a tad? I'm just thinking how expensive it will be to maintain a matching wardrobe.

Lucendar wrote:

Ok so I'll go in order I guess. Ties to Westcrown and all are newly added to Aldis's backstory.

Campaign Trait- I would like to switch the Killer trait with the Diabolist Raised trait (Easy enough switch).

Dotting for interest. I'll read up on Council of Thieves and get a character concept to you by the deadline, I just wanted to run a few things past you first.

I've been looking at running a summoner for a while. I saw your post about disallowing synthesists, but what about a vanilla version? I'll probably go with an infernal theme given the setting. You didn't mention the class as prohibited in the blurb, but I know some people have strong feelings about it...

I'm in the GMT+0 timezone (England) and can generally post multiple times a day.

@Aldis: Thanks for the update
@loimprevisto: Summoner class is not banned, just synthesist archetype

I just couldn't resist, DM. Here is Gerald's stealthy, trapfinding, partial face rogue for your consideration. Everything can be changed as needed. I left the noble home she worked for blank, and am open to suggestions that might further the storyline.

Thanks as always for running the game for all we applicants...

Lucendar how do you feel about party members being racist against other party members? I am pretty sure Poshment would have a problem with Tieflings and other fiends seeing how he as a paladin oath against them but would this stand point effect my chances of getting selected?

I'm working on putting together an alias for Poshment and am trying to frame out his background.

I know there was a tiefling concept mentioned but no formal concept has been proposed so it's not an issue yet. If it were, I have no problem with it, as long as there is justification and your oath seems pretty clear; I'd probably just select one or the other and not both to the party. It won't negatively affect your chances.

What it means by "before the results of the roll are revealed" is that after you see the number but before you know whether it hit/saved/succeeded or whatever. However, that still may not work the best for PbP, since combat already drags. You'd have to do every roll and wait to see if misfortune is wanted before stating whether the roll succeeded.

Exactly, that's why Okuthor should rethink concept.

OK, so I have two character concepts, somewhat similar in characterization, if not in background. Let me know which one you like (if either). Both would have the westcrown firebrand trait:

Callandor the True, Inquisitor of Iomedae:
Callandor's father was a mercenary and from a young age he showed a good amount of skill with the blade. Though his father, Crispin, was a soldier for hire, he always instilled in Callandor the desire to do the right thing. Crispin regretted that his life had become nothing more than chasing the next payoff, but in Westcrown, idealism does not put food on the table. When Crispin's wife died of a fever during Callandor's 13th year, Crispin took to giving his son to the church of Iomedae to care for while he was away at campaign. Callandor's time was spent alternating between menial tasks for the church and reading The Acts of Iomedae . After his 15th year began work with the longsword replaced the menial tasks, and he began to spend time with the church even when his father was in town. Crispin missed his son, but knew the swordcraft would serve him well, and saw in his son the unstained soul he himself had longed for.

But as Callandor's knowledge and faith in Iomedae grew, he was unhappy with the Church in Westcrown. What use is duty if it is not to doing good? He started to see unhappy parallels between the less evil members of the Asmodean faith and the less noble of his own. The church elders attempted to reason with Callandor, preaching temperance and that patience and steadfastness was the way to battle evil, not dying in a fiery sermon against the power of the land. There was wisdom in the words but there was holy fire in his heart. So rather than embroil the Church in a holy war with the Hellknights and the other powers that be with his words, Callandor severed his ties with the church proper and focused his attention on the good he could do personally, and by lending his leadership to like-minded individuals. He wants nothing more than to be a paragon of Iomedae and make Westcrown a place where his father can be a good man and a man of duty at the same time.

Who's the scrawny little dwarf with the old toolbelt and dusty overalls? Hollow cheeks, scarred visage. Deep-set scrutinizing eyes. If that wasn`t alarming it might be the crude runes tattoed on his arms. His obnoxious body odour? Or maybe it's his wiry sinews - tensed to spring at any time. The unkempt salt and pepper beard. Clearly this dwarf is a bad egg, the kind of scoundrel your mother warned you about. Are you sure you want to hire this guy?

He horks and spits.

What are you staring at?
