Don't worry; I just noticed that myself, about the performance. I tuned the rest, but the performance requirement would have to be reduced to about 150 to scale...

Oh... it's one of those funky foreign words I learned to spell incorrectly.

And they're fun to come up with!
16. Hawkeye: Confirm 10 critical hits with a ranged weapon: Range increments increase by 5 with weapon used.

You have to flee an actual battle that's not going well for you, and while that spell may be involved, don't take the 'with everyone else' part for granted.

I wasn't planning on it. I'm not sure this is meant to be a combat encounter. I know you're intrigued by all those glowy things, but its probably easier to let them go on doing what they're doing and then sneak up from behind and pick them off one at a time.

I used to play with him a lot, not so much now. I ran him and a friend of his through some beginner box games last summer, and he was hooked (he was 11). He started GM'ing games for his friends, and then, miracle of miracles, a Pathfinder group got started as part of the after-school program at his middle school. So he played two afternoons a week, and the group soon started a weekend game, so he played 3 times a week for most of the school year. The guy who runs the group kept it going during the summer, and there are six middle-schoolers and their GM playing at my house right now. It has been a really great experience for him, he's made a ton of new friends and it's unleashed his creativity in many new ways (if only he'd write some of it down...)

I find the middle-school games a bit chaotic and insane to actually play in, but I help with character builds and suggestions, and get some respect from the kids for knowing the game reasonably well (and they all pore over my old D&D books and I get to brag about how I used to game with Erol Otus, who drew the cover for the old Deities and Demigods book, among many other things).

So my son and I talk a ton about Pathfinder - ideas, adventures, stories, etc. - but we don't play in the same game very often. But we've got a lot of gaming together lined up for PaizoCon - we got into a game run by Gary McBride, who wrote the Way of the Wicked adventure path, and I'm very excited about that.

Okay, probably more of an answer than anyone really wanted, but it's always hard to be brief when talking about one's children.

p.s. - Drovya - as I said, he was 11, but one of the kids he plays with started at 9 or so, and I think I was 9 or 10 when my brother first roped me into playing the then brand new D&D Basic Set.

Hm, 10 5/6 years to go! (for my son. Not that my daughter won't also be suckered into playing.)

Female :D Check out my fetching opercles!

I can hardly get my friends' children to leave us alone for a few minutes when playing. The six year old keeps rolling crits for the gm!
...
Like he needed help to do that. Still, she got incredibly gleeful about killing her daddy.

I started with my son when he was under 6, but I had to tell him everything to do. Really the best time to start is when they can read and do basic math, so they can take some ownership over their character sheet and die rolls. I'll probably try to start my daughter when she is 6, but it will still be a bit early. There are systems geared towards kids that may help teach some RPG skills earlier, but I was a bit afraid of getting stuck in a simpler system, so I just started with full blown Pathfinder.

Haka, can you tell more about why the middle school games are "a bit chaotic and insane to actually play in"? I'm curious to hear more about that. Would they let you GM? I'd sort of planned to try to keep that role, but probably someone will want to dethrone me at some point...

And I totally sympathize with your frustration that your son won't write more of his cool ideas down!

Rohini – the games my son plays in with his friends from school are a bit wild and loud, mostly because of how the kids all came to be playing together. They first got together at the after-school program I mentioned, and there’d be a dozen kids in a room all excited to play, and it could get quite a little crazy. The GM was much more tolerant and accommodating of their noisy kid natures than I probably would have been – and as a result he was much more successful than I would have been as well. But that’s the context in which they learned to play, and it has continued to some degree, even when they’re playing in the group outside of school.

Obviously, not all the kids are loud, and it tends to be one or two who make a lot of noise, and sometimes that’s enough to get everyone going – and that’s the chaotic, insane nature of the game that would make it a challenge for me to play in. If I were running the game, I’d probably feel a desire to ask the kids to be quieter and focus more on the game – which would likely make it less fun for all of us. Their GM is able to keep things roughly on track and let them express themselves quite freely, so he gets to run his game and the kids have a great time. (I should add that I’ve never felt that I’m particularly good as a GM, especially in the more free-form moments, so the notion of trying to run a game in that context seems like it would be a challenge.) And the kids are actually getting more focused and less nuts when they play these days, so perhaps I’m just a bit shell-shocked from my initial encounters with them.

Interesting, so who is the GM? Another parent?

I definitely hear you on the craziness. Running the games for 4-5 boys aged 8-9 tests my patience to the extreme. But they love it and I feel that over time we've managed to accomplish a fair amount.

I definitely hear you on feeling unsure as a GM. I see the pictures Trout paints with words, and I wish I could do that in the two games I run. It helps a lot to be running a Paizo AP with my adult group. With the kids it is mostly about stringing together a series of interesting combat encounters. Not much roleplaying possible!

The GM is an interesting fellow. He's a youngish, idealistic attorney who works part-time for a little non-profit and doesn't make much money, and who loves Pathfinder. So he set up these after-school classes, which he makes a little money from, and then the outside-of-school games, which the parents also pay him something for - so he's a professional GM, which you don't see very often. At one point the school was going to cancel his class for schedule reasons and the parents rose up in support of our RPG-mad kids and we all bonded around the issue, so it's a nicely tight-knit group, but I'm the only parent who also plays the game.

On GM'ing, I play in a number of PbPs, and my son has expressed interest in joining one, but they're pretty competitive to get into. So I'm thinking of running one for him and a couple of friends, which would be interesting, as I'd be running a game with more time to think and craft what I want to say. I'm also really looking forward to seeing the GM's at PaizoCon do their thing, as I'm sure I'll learn a lot.
