While I have no problem with fluff scenes, this is a Rebellion mechanic, so the group is either choosing to Mitigate or not. My question is ultimately not reliant on in game RP, but rather GM fiat so-to-speak. I just wanted to hear player opinions on the restriction to which I have referred.

Seems reasonable to me.

Ephemeral GameMaster

Hopefully that wasn't too abrupt. I am a 'D' in the DISC categories of behavior, I often become very direct without thinking about how it sounds. I am definitely not trying to discourage in game discussion, but just wanted to make sure I had an answer in hand if you do choose to Mitigate after your IC RP. :)

I was with ya. Just saying I agreed with your alteration of the mechanic given the circumstances. Makes sense.

Ephemeral GameMaster

Sorry I didn't post anything more substantial today. Half of what I did get up was from my mobile phone if that tells you how the day went.

I have my eye on closing up the scene at the Aulamaxa estate and getting Phineas' investigation going. Also, tomorrow I plan to give you the first results of 'Rexus Researches Ravens, Reek Week 1!' If I recall, Phineas now knows all three required languages(?), so his assistance will actually manifest with mechanics aside from purely fluff addition! Though I may be able to do some ½ bonuses for those short a language or two, we'll see.

Once that's set up, I will GM summarize how 'Dangerous Times' came to be. You may commence your in character meetup for Week 2 anytime, but I don't fault you if you want to wait for the summary.

Lastly, Avrora PM'd me and stated she will be back in the game soon, but had a location move and only recently got the internet service working. Just thought you would all like to know she's not vanished!

Isabel qualifies too - she was teaching Phineas Strix and he was teaching her Celestial so that they could both help out. :)

I'm fine with your view of mitigating - we need at least one masked man out there. Isabel is doing her demagoguery in her masked persona but we might need someone a bit more... bulky to deal with this...

Ephemeral GameMaster

It seems I missed some questions hidden in your leveling up!

Isabel Rhelian wrote:

Answer: As good a reason as any for the spontaneous language comprehension a new rank in Linguistics provides. I appreciate you trying to even find an in-game reason.

How are we doing HP? For a d8 HD, would it be PFS style where it's 5/level? Alternating between 4 and 5 to keep the average of two levels at 9? Rolling?

Answer: Unless anyone has any objections, keeping it as Crusty stated in the beginning works just fine for me.

I like average, as otherwise it can get very bad with a few unlucky rolls. Average is 4.5, however; would we alternate 4 and 5 hp on level ups, go with 4, or go with 5 if we average? I might be willing to risk the rolling if its rounded down.

Phineas will probably argue in favor of not trying to mitigate at this point. He'll caution that we're not ready to try and project that kind of influence safely, and that our best chance is to keep a low profile and ride it out unless things get bad enough that we have to do something (aka, if we're unlucky enough that we hit this next week and it becomes persistent, we're probably going to want to attempt to mitigate). There's a good chance this doesn't do anything negative to us and blows over, and I think it will behoove us to keep notoriety as low as possible until we're in a position to keep it pinned to 0 with saboteurs.

I propose that everyone donates 10gp to the rebellion treasury - we need to have a bit more of a reserve than we do currently. I think it would be really good to get some sabouters and some spies ASAP and that requires 2100 gold so we need to invest! :)

I propose for actions we:
1. recruit more supporters
2. use the Fushi sisters to gather information.

There must be stuff that we can do but at the moment we have nothing, so lets try and get some leads!

Either Phineas or Galen to lead the sneaks I think - Galen if we've recruited some of his ne'er-do-ell friends from Lower Lowcleft (or wherever it is!)

Hey guys! Sorry for my silence. We've moved and are unpacking. New job and necessary cleaning/renovations on this old house and its acreage are still taking up nearly all of my free time. Although I was hopeful, We still don't yet have wifi (we're in the country and our options are satellite or paying cable to dig a line out to the property), and I can't really do the PbP thing well from my phone. Posting from work is very difficult. As to PbP in general, I've had to push everything to the back burner, even withdrawing from most of my games.
I've put off withdrawing from this game (it means a lot to me), but it does look like I'm on an indefinite hiatus while I wait to resolve my internet access problem. Perhaps it's best that I leave after all, as it's not fair to keep everyone hanging. I don't need to say how much I've enjoyed playing with you, nor how sad I am to step back, but real life does happen. I wish everyone the best!

Ephemeral GameMaster

I'm sorry to see you make your exit, Avrora, but I can understand and appreciate your situation.

Good luck with your future gaming!

Ephemeral GameMaster

@Everyone: Well, I think we are at a crossroads. Two players down, and despite good intentions stated in PM and discussion thread, Galen has also been absent.

Darian, Isabel, Phineas, and Galen if you're still out there, what are your feelings and expectations at this stage?

I'm thinking we need another player honestly. One willing to play a front liner and interested in active RP participation.

I'm sorry to see you go, Avrora. I am glad you have a happy reason for why you have to take a hiatus, however. If you do get settled in and your internet sorted out, I am sure we would all be happy to have you return.

I think we can probably continue with four, but can't really drop below that. We do have some significant combat weaknesses (specifically, I do) without Avrora, but we should be able to make it work I think. If Galen is also missing, then we probably do need another player, but I would really like to continue with the original group if we can. Galen, are you still around?

I have been enjoying the roleplaying scenes, the rebellion mechanics and the general pace we've been moving at.

For our next rebellion action, I'm in agreement, both about donating additional funds to the treasury and the proposed actions. We need to gather info about what's going on in the city. We should also do a meeting at the end of the week scene with everyone, I think.

@Pin - I'm agreed that we need 4. If Galen can't keep going then I think we need a full combatant, we have magic well covered right now, especially with some wands. I'm thinking recruiting another will probably be a good idea whether or not Galen chooses to continue. I think some kind of class that can provide frontline presence would be good as well.

I'm going to be taking a small weekend vacation coming up here, but I will see if I can get something posted up in recruitment before then.

Sounds good. I'll do it since it's PbP. I usually prefer my players to roll, but Real Time is a lot different than the boards.

I'm on vacation now. So posts in a few days.

Ephemeral GameMaster

I'm back in the lands of responsibility. I'll try to get us moving and start the recruitment.

At this point the silence from Galen suggests he's not returning which is quite a shame.

Are you guys wanting to stick with four? Or should we shoot for more?

I truly think we NEED more love on the front line. But will agree with the majority vote.

Ephemeral GameMaster

Well, we are at three (since Galen has been MIA), and my request for Fourth is going to be frontline.

I am trying to ascertain if you want to stop there hard and fast, or if we could/should entertain applicants stretching to 5 or 6, your original total. Five may be more ideal, and if Galen returns from hibernation, we wouldn't be too full to readd him.

And on that point I am undecided. So I will go with what the others want.

Most AP's are designed for 4 players. But we are not an optimized make up.

I would look to add one more, I think, especially if they have a stronger combat focus. I still hope Galen will be able to return, but you're right that it isn't looking promising.

I like smaller groups because they tend to move quicker - evidence being that the 4 of us here have the lions share of posts for a long time now. I'd look for one more, definitely a frontliner too (I think a pally would be best but we can't be that specific! :D)

I'm not opposed to 5 if there are some really good submissions but 4 with space for Galen if he does come back looks best to me. :)

Ephemeral GameMaster

I think I'm ready to post up for replacement. I modified Crusty's original Recruitment post to hopefully be aligned with what we have decided on from the original changes; let me know if there is anything out of whack. Otherwise this will go live in 24 hours in a new Recruitment thread. Sooner if I get feedback from the current players.

Replacement PC Creation:
Howdy! Currently in the market for a replacement PC for an ongoing Hell's Rebels campaign. Melee/tank/meat shield/frontline combatant is the current desire. Anyone still interested should continue reading and build their PC based on the following:

The character creation outline for Hell’s Rebels characters will be as follows:
Rules for character creation marked with a ‘*’ will have additional notes below the overall outline.

  • Starting Level: Replacement PC will start at 2nd level.
  • Alignment: Any Non-Evil. The campaign is Chaotic Good themed.
  • Ability Scores: 15 point buy.
  • HP: Max HP rolls at 1st level. Players will roll for HP or take Average from level 2 onward.
  • Traits: 2 traits, one of which must be a Campaign Trait. A third “Reason for Protesting” mini-trait will also be required to explain why you attended the Aria Park Protest.
  • Drawback: Drawbacks are allowed.
  • Base Starting Money: 1000gp.
  • Races*: Any Core, plus Tiefling and Tengu. Other races may or not be allowed at the DM’s discretion, though any beyond the above mentioned ones will carry certain penalties for the rebellion.
  • Classes: All classes from Paizo Products, including Occult Adventures. Unchained versions are mandatory for those classes that have unchained versions.
  • Firearms: Firearms are allowed, but operate under the standard rules, and thus are not commonly found in Kintargo or Cheliax.
  • Crafted Items: Any character able to craft items through a feat may do so at the reduced prices. Characters with craft skills may craft items ahead of time at the reduced price if they can craft the item by taking a 10 and succeed.
  • Background Skills: All players gain an additional 2 skill ranks per level to be used in Background skills.

*Unusual Races: Races that go beyond the above-mentioned choices will see a penalty to the rebellion - most notably, unless steps are taken to hide one’s unusual race, the group’s Notoriety will see a greater increase each time Notoriety is gained, and the organization’s starting Notoriety will be higher for each unusual race.

When you create a submission, please create a character alias and include your character information in the form of a bestiary stat block like Theodric Rothnt’s Profile. An easily copied and modified version can be found here. Alternatively, Hero Lab format or something very similar to either works as well.

Also, include the following information in your profile:

  • 1) Appearance
  • 2) Personality
  • 3) Background

When reading backgrounds, I’m looking for ways that you as players tie yourselves into Kintargo; Where do you live? Do you have family here? How long have you lived here? Do you have any special haunts that you frequent? Do you have friends or rivals? These sorts of things I’m looking for, and the better tied to Kintargo your character is, the better chance you have at being selected. This also helps me see who has read the player’s guide and the ‘Kintargo at a Glance’ article within it.

EDIT: As I suspected, unseating the old thread made it completely unreachable from this campaign. If you need it for any reason, I added it to the Campaign Info. and also here:

Sadly a good call out.

For my part it's just an assumption because..."roleplaying game," but you're most definitely correct in that it is no guarantee when seeking players.

Fair point... the tavern may well be a good place to find like-minded individuals. :D

Ephemeral GameMaster

Team: It is with great regret I am choosing to step aside as GM. Losing 50% of the original players (and also assuming Phineas) had left me a bit depressed. Phineas' return definitely threw me for a loop as I had decided to announce this yesterday.

I debated about this since I felt the recruitment was going successfully, but I found myself just so unmotivated to try and get going. I examined this and realized I was going to be doing you all a disservice by forcing myself to continue if I am no longer having fun.

The honest truth is I chose to take on this game expecting a couple of others I was involved in to taper off as a lot of the players had gone quiet. Then when several of them resurged, I have started to find myself a bit overwhelmed.

I think you three are really great players, and I feel just awful about running off right when there was a chance to get going again. Maybe we can play together another time.

Let me know if you want me to call off the recruitment or you can jump in and take control of it however you'd like.

Thank you for the work you have done taking over the game, Pin. I appreciated getting another chance to revisit Phineas for a time, and you have done an excellent job.

Losing players and a GM, however, does put a lot of stress on the game. While I have enjoyed my time with Phineas and with all of you, I do not want to go through both a GM and several character replacements. I am going to bow out of this game.

Darian, Isabel, I wish you luck if you want to keep the game moving. If you decide to allow it to rest, perhaps in another year Avrora and Galen will be in different life situations and we can revive the game once more. It happened once, after all; maybe it will happen again.

Thank you all for a wonderful gaming experience. Hopefully, I will run into some of you again some day on the boards.
