Assuming you guys all come out of hiding and agree to go along, none of the soldiers do attack; in fact, the leader is quite willing to leave Nadya home and chats amiably with Edward on their way escorting you all to the White Weasel, where Sergeant Sertane is waiting. Just a job, you know. Have to put food on the table somehow.
Sergeant Sertane is not at all amused that Nadya is not with you, and even less so at the confused leader's explanation why. He directs them to return at once to her cabin and fetch her.
Edward W.Fell |
Well that is up to them. I did say "I" would accompany them back to the Sergeant. If that will not cut it then we might have to negotiate a bit more... Are the rest of you up for "hostage" recovery and by recovery I mean ambush :D
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |
Sergeant, it's the *middle of the night*. You're going to take a mother away from her sleeping children for some ambiguous questioning? why don't you just start with us, since we're here now. if you're not satisfied, you can then talk to Nadya in the morning--you know, not under cover of darkness, like decent people do?
GM thunderspirit |
Would like one more assent before I assume that's what's happened. Plus everyone can choose to respond if wanted.
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |
OK, sorry I misunderstood. I wasn't clear that Edward wanted to go alone, so I'll respect that. If you would be willing to scratch my response, Ali will stay at the house.
Davosh, can Liksa follow them, and come back and get us if Edward needs help?
GM thunderspirit |
Okay, so Edward goes alone.
The guard leader is quite willing to leave Nadya home and chats amiably with Edward on their way to the White Weasel, where Sergeant Sertane is waiting. Just a job, you know. Have to put food on the table somehow.
Sergeant Sertane is not at all amused that Edward is here by himself, and even less so at the confused leader's explanation why. He calls them many different names, and is about to send them on their way to go get Nadya and the rest of the party, when he thinks better of it. Instead, we will lock this one up here, he bellows, and I'll come with you to teach these whelps a lesson. No one makes a fool of me, least of all a handful of ruffian ne'er-do-wells and an insolent woman. The guards sheepishly move to place manacles on Edward as Sertane turns to grab his coat, his face in a wretched scowl.
As he turns to grab his coat and his blade, the look has transformed into an evil grin when he again faces Edward. Know this, fool, that you've brought suffering down on this town. We should wipe it out for the trouble you've caused us. This Nadya, we should take her other children and be done with her too.
Edward W.Fell |
Ohhhohhooo :D dun dun dun.. you all are gonna get it now :D Sertane is after ya
Edward meets the evil grin of Sergeant Sertane with a calm warm gaze of his own. Bless your troubled delusional soul Sergeant. If saving the life of one of the towns members from certain death is causing trouble for the town, then trouble and suffering must mean different things here.
Edward takes a small breathMen the only thing that you can gain by following this delusional fools orders is nightmares at night and damnation of your ever living souls. Unjust orders are not orders, only crimes leaders try to get others to do. By the will of Apsu please do what you all know is right in your hearts.
Diplomacy w/guidance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 1 = 26
now if Liska could just bring me the keys :D
GM thunderspirit |
Liska sez, "screw Edward." ;-)
The guards — about ten in all, counting the ones here at the Weasel and the ones who came to get you at Nadya's — look at each other uncertainly. Several seem to be on the sergeant's side, but some display divided loyalties.
Sertane's eyes never leave Edward's. One miserable life in this wretched backwater means nothing. The presence of you and your friends here will rightly wipe this stain from the map and the White Witches will say it never existed! He turns to the guards. Go get Petska and her children. Then burn the house. And the neighbors' house. To the ground. He turns back to Edward with a broad smile. We will burn it all.
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |
Liska sez, "screw Edward." ;-)
Oh it's on like Donkey Kong now.
Indeed. Let's see who is burned to the ground, and whose ashes shall be pissed upon.
I only hope Edward doesn't stay separated; if we can get together, we got this chump.
Edward W.Fell |
In display of awesome delaying tactic hoping my friends have prepared the best they can. Edward engages in conversation since that's all that's left to him currently.
Edward meets his gaze, and visibly relaxes giving non-verbal clues of relaxed discussion, not agression. When he is speaking his words are for the Sgt, but his gaze goes to each of the soldiers. See Sertane that's where your wrong all life means something. What if it was your mother, daughter, wife in a backwater town? I'm sure you would say it means something then. I'm also wondering what trouble that she or I have caused? So far I've been called a ruffian. What ruffian comes willingly to the law. Well I use that term loosely since your actions say your more bully than public servant. So at least tell me what I'm accused of? Who's my accusor?
GM thunderspirit |
GM thunderspirit |
Just a reminder that you guys don't know what's befallen Edward just now. Liska can run back and bark, but that's about it.

No, Vojtek knows. He always assumes things I know to be true that he has no way of knowing. Its one of his non-weapon proficiencies.
GM thunderspirit |
Morale: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
The guards put manacles on Edward and leave. (He is relieved of him of any visible weapons, if he has any, beforehand.
Sertane continues to argue with Edward as the guards depart. All will bend a knee to the White Witches, and those who do not will not live to see the dawn. Their lives, your lives...none of it matters in the grand scheme of things. I think he's planning to see a Beckett play...
The guards arrive at Chez Petska some ten minutes after they left with Edward, armed and ready. They do not knock this time, but strike the door to break it down. This will take 1d3 ⇒ 2 rounds. What's the Edward-less party doing?
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |
Seeing the guards approach, Ali peers at them--and notices they're both armed for bear, and sans Edward.
Crap. This is bad.
She steps near the door, ready to unleash eldritch fire on the attackers--but first, a little deception may do well here...
she casts Dancing Lights out into the woods, resembling torches moving away from the house. Accompanying that is Ghost Sound of people running away. Finally, she casts Shield on herself.
Once the spells are cast, she stands in front of the doorway (not so close as to be in danger once its burst open, mind) with thumbs touching, fingers splayed out in a fan shape, ready to unleash fire on the attackers once the door is opened.
Vojtek Wartooth |
Vojtek stands with naked steel ready to slaughter the troops as soon as they show themselves. Kappi is likewise ready for the deadly dance, the boy is flipping his tomahawk silntly ready to hurl is spinning into the first thing through the door.
Ooc- both have a readied action to attack as soon as the door is breached and a target appears.
GM thunderspirit |
Point of order: we're not yet in initiative, so you can't ready an action.
You do have two rounds to prepare before the door crashes in and all nine Hells break loose. Since you guys know they're coming, though, I'll give a bonus on initiative, represented by a penalty for the guards.
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

I'm hoping my ghost sound/dancing lights gambit will buy us a little more time!
GM thunderspirit |
Oh, yeah, forgot about that.
Will DC 13: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
Nope, the lead guard doesn't fall for it, so he doesn't let the rest of them go. Two rounds!
Davosh the Wanderer |
Hopefully Liska returns barking. Mage Armor, loaded crossbow, and hide. I'm ready.
GM thunderspirit |
Sure, Liska can do that — I don't see why not.
Vojtek's post indicates he never left the cabin, which is fine. Ali's indicates much the same. Davosh, Kappi?
Vojtek Wartooth |
Kappi is behind any cover available in the cabin where he can throw his weapon at the door. . If there is a back room or other appropriate rear-echelon area for the noncombatants Vojtek would have pushed them there wirelessly but with muscular insistence.
Kappi Matarito |
hi guys, Im back. Just in the nick of time it appears.
Can Kappi still be outside hiding and watching. Thats where he last was, in a nice spot watching the front door.
He stays hidden and gets ready to ambush these guard bastiches as they are breaking down the door.
GM thunderspirit |
Right then. I'll get something up this morning (CDT).
GM thunderspirit |
Kappi and Vojtek need a Stealth check.
Getting initiative out of the way:
Ali: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Davosh: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Kappi: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Vojtek: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
baddies: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 1 - 2 = 11
GM thunderspirit |
Not my best map, I admit, but what the heck, I'm creating on the fly. :-)
Init repost:

Davosh
Nadya is currently in the back room with the boys; both the back and front doors are locked, though the guards are trying to get in the front.
guards' Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
That's the target for the Stealth checks; if you succeed, they won't see you in the surprise round.
All but Davosh up!
Kappi Matarito |
Stealth 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
not the best stealth ever, but it appears to be good enough
The young rogue is a little unsure of what to do. After a micro second of hesitation, which seemed like an eternity of indescision Kappi decides that these guards are bad news and need some killing.
Kappi Matarito |
Round One
From the shadows the rogue hurls his favorite tomahawk in ambush style. He targets the purple guard.
Point blank shot/deadly aim/sneak attack. 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 1 - 1 = 16
Damage 1d6 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 + 2 + (1, 5) = 16

SURPRISE ROUND (or is it "round 1?")
I did specify that I was right at the front door...
As soon as the door is open, the four guards are met by Ali's fierce grin--and fiercer fire.
Burning Hands vs. 4 guards at front door: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8 <--Ref DC 14 for half
GM thunderspirit |
Ali: you did, yep. My bad. And Davosh said he was with you. Adjusted appropriately. And it's technically Round 1.
Also, no need for Davosh or Ali to make Stealth checks as they're inside. (Unless Davosh's roll was for Vojtek...?)
As the lead guard (orange) bursts in the door, Kappi's tomahawk comes out of the night at another guard (purple), landing between his flat-footed eyes and splitting his skull!
Ali greets the broken door with flames (FLAMES! on the side of his face...)!

LOVE that movie. Owned it on VHS first.

I know, right? Love every moment of that silly film. :-D
Since we essentially dispensed with a surprise round, this is a full round of actions, so Vojtek still has a Standard to use.
RAGING VOJTEK!!!! |
Round the First
Vojtek is startled at first by his ill-timed ejaculation, then looks around half expecting a flurry of blows. When none come he snaps into a rage, blood engorging his muscles. He swings his mighty sword up and attempts to impale his enemy on it.
Power Attack with Greatsword: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 1 = 26 for 2d6 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 11 + 2 = 20 damage.
Can't see map, Vojtek rages and attacks the nearest bad guy.

Raging Vojtek lops the head off the orange-dotted guard. It doesn't quite clear the fence, though — there is no joy in Mudville Waldsby.
The Black guard steps around the one Kappi dropped and attacks the rogue!
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
...while Blue focuses his vengeance on Vojtek!
So! It's a fight you want, eh? Hah, the Winter Witches will pick your bones clean when they're through with you!
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Red also steps around his comrade with a tomahawk-split skull and attacks Kappi!
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

I would kindly ask to retcon that, after the spell, Ali drew her sword as a move action. Thank you.

I can't get to the map either. Depending on the layout, I'll either Stink Eye one or Vomit a Swarm of spiders.
