I think I'm going with a human Tempest Cleric:

15+1/12/13/12/17+1/7
Feat: Resilient (Con)
Cantrips: Sacred Flame, Thaumaturgy, Guidance
Background: Sailor
Skills: Athletics, Perception, Religion, Insight, Survival
Tools: Navigator's Tools, Vehicles (water)
Saves: Con, Wis, Cha
Languages: Common, Primordial

That's the base crunch; I'll fill in details when I have more time.

Silver Crusade

Oh, man! I just found this. Is your game still open, Jiggy? I've never played 5e (well, I played once at the most recent Free RPG Day, but I'm not sure that counts). But I've played every other edition of D&D, since 1980. I only have the Starter Set for 5e available to me.

I'm new to PbP, being about 40% of the way through a PFS scenario currently. Here is a sample of my PbP. I am playing Juniper Berrythwaite in that game.

I would be happy to play any character, but my preference would be for a halfling filling any role except rogue/thief.

On the chance that you say "yes," here are some ability scores...
STR: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 4) - 2 = 17 = 14
DEX: 4d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 5) + 2 = 14 = 13
CON: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 5) = 17 = 15
INT: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 1) = 8 = 7
WIS: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 6) = 16 = 14
CHA: 4d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 2) + 2 = 16 = 14

I don't think racial ability score modifiers are covered in the Starter Set, so I assumed they were the same from 3.5.

It looks like it might be a cleric. o_o A really, really dumb cleric.

This is just me spitballing:

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Rosco Barrelbottom.
Alignment Chaotic Good
Background Criminal
Deity Some god associated with liberty, and personal freedom. (I don't remember much about the various D&D pantheons.)

Background
Rosco grew up on the streets, and quickly fell in with the wrong crowd, living a life of crime. That all changed after he was caught burglarizing the home Pallis, a human of a cleric of [Deity]. Instead of turning Rosco over to the authorities, Pallis offered him redemption. Rosco accepted the deal—anything had to be better than going back to prison—and before long, he was a full-fledged cleric of [Deity].

Thanks! :)

Edit to add: I would really be happy to play just about any character. I'm a team player and I don't mind filling whatever role the group might lack.

Hi, The Fox!

Yes, recruitment is still open. In fact, less than a party's worth have even finished their characters, so you're still good.

Stat modifiers should be in the free PDF, I thought, though I don't have time to check right this second.

Also, you know the rolls aren't required to be in order, right?

Excellent! I will look around and see if I can find the free PDF you speak of.

I know the rolls need not be in order. But it makes for a pretty fun array, don't you think? :)

If RDN is set on cleric, I could do something else. Not that there's anything wrong with two clerics in a party.

How many characters do you want in the party?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

About 5 characters, give or take one, depending on what I see.

Silver Crusade

Found it! I was happily surprised to see there is no penalty to Str. I will go with a Lightfoot Halfling.

Here are the raw rolls again: 16, 11, 15, 7, 13, 12

I am going to move the rolls around to two different arrangements to see which I like better. The first is a slight modification from above (swapping Con, Wis, and Cha).

I will create aliases for both and post them shortly.

Edit: Done!

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
I am happy to play either of these characters, or something else depending on the make-up of the party. I also would probably want to adjust the backstory somewhat as I gain familiarity with the setting.

Hi Jiggy. Just to let you know, I'm still keen to be considered (this is the beginning and avatar) but won't be able to spend time with the books until Friday night, so I'll be putting the full character up at the last minute.

Cheers

Sorry Jiggy, been a little busy the past few days to build characters. I'll be working on mine tonight, and should have him up fairly soon.

The Exchange

Hey,

I am an unlikely candidate for this play by post but I am incredibly interested both in the campaign and in 5th edition.

I am pretty new to play-by-post but I've fallen in love with the play style and am interesting in continuing to play in this format.

First: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (6) + (6) + (5) = 20 = 17
Second: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (3) + (5) + (4) = 13 = 12
third: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + (2) + (5) + (3) = 12 = 10
fourth: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (6) + (5) + (1) = 13 = 12
fifth: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + (2) + (3) + (3) = 12 = 10
sixth: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + (5) + (5) + (5) = 20 = 15

Not a bad array by any means, relatively balanced, I'd have to say, I'm leaning toward a spell caster with stats like that though.

You said you'd have a 5-man party so you don't mind some overlap? I wouldn't mind playing a wizard or a fighter with the stats that I have. I'll write up some alias here in a bit, I'll post in a similar fashion as the Fox above!

Podo's character sheet is now complete (I think). I've got a cool story in mind about how his second identity became as a Priest of Chauntea, how he escaped from capture when his mentor was captured, and how he ended up an adventurer, but to tired to type all that up right now.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm only going to submit one character, I am rather excited about this dwarven fighter/wanna-be Paladin. I think she'd be a lot of fun and provide a good opportunity for role play.

About Thyra Fireforge
Thyra the Mountain Dwarf
Str: 17+2(19)
Dex: 12
Con: 15+2(17)
Wis: 12
Int: 12
Cha: 10

Class: Fighter, probably leaning toward's using a hammer two-handed or maybe a great axe as it applies.
Alignment: Lawful Good, will be a paladin of sorts, not wise enough or patient enough to make it as a cleric but she has a strong sense of faith in the gods.
background: Acolyte
Profession: Bodyguard, part-time scribe for the church

Thyra was raised in the faith and surrounds herself in the dogma of her church like an armor. She is stubborn at times and hates giving up on tasks or leaving something half-finished. She tried being a cleric but she lacked the patience or the magical ability to ever speak to her god however she is still highly active in the church and works as a bodyguard and as a left-hand of sorts for protecting the church and her interests.

Artemis here. Here's the bones of the character so far. Working on the backstory and gear (taking the class/background given gear option)... But it's gotten too late so I'll have to finish tomorrow.

To sum up the general background: Child of a rural fishing village, spent a lot of time in the local sage's library rather than on his step-father's fishing boat. Came across some forbidden lore, wound up obsessed with it. Over time, wound up making the dark pact with Hastur, in the hopes of obtaining more knowledge. That's pretty much the reason he travels. The "note from a dead colleague" (sage background) can be whatever you want it to be, or I can come up with something for it, your choice.

Fairly standard, "delve too deep into the quest for knowledge and be consumed" kind of fare.

Appearance & Background:

Pietro is a solidly-built man, thick with muscle and scarred with old callouses. His pale hair and eyes mark him as coming from the far north. While his eyes are sharp and hide considerable insight, he is used to serving a captain, and is slow to assert himself, unless it's with a weapon.

Pietro served as a sailor on the high seas, serving as navigator, spiritual advisor, and magical support for the crew. But the sea held no charm for him anymore, and he found himself longing to explore places that were not endless fields of rolling water.

He took leave of his crewmates, and eventually ended up Radlebb Keep, looking for ways to apply the skills he acquired as a sailor in new adventures.

Equipment is rejiggered a bit, but with the same gold cost.

I'm fine with creating your own traits/ideals/bonds/flaws. If you want different proficiencies, I'd be okay with you creating a custom background, though that customizability comes with the cost of not getting that little special ability that the pre-made backgrounds have (like the Outlander's foraging and memory for terrain, the Noble's position of privelege, etc).

Okay - will ditch the criminal contact feature that comes with the criminal background - seems my nation has wiped their hands of me. :(

Important Note: I'm okay with people not wanting to create a profile unless selected. However, I do want to see more than a skeleton before making a decision. I want to know what your class features are, what spells or other selections you've made, etc. The ideal would be to post whatever the contents of your profile would end up being if you were picked.

As soon as I can, I'll go through the submissions and try to offer some feedback to those I haven't already said anything to.

@Zook Sparlegem: Formatting issues as I mentioned before, but the character itself seems fine. I do want to caution you that I can't guarantee that your "False Identity" thing will come up. Maybe that's okay, but I like for people to make informed choices, rather than feeling let-down later. :)

@Podo Bumbleroot: Same caution about False Identity. Fine for you to have it, just understand it might not come up.

-----------------

Will continue down the list later.

I'll finish her tonight, I am at work till 6. I can post while at work, but I'd have some difficulty finishing a character sheet.

I'm off at 6 pm PST, if you want it sooner than that, I'll see what I can do about it on my lunch!

@Rosco Barrelbottom: Whoops, put you in the "Completed" group by mistake. I look forward to seeing the final version. :)

@Arannis Brightsea: Looks like you've got a few things to fill in yet (gear, spell descriptions), but what you've got isn't giving me any red flags, so that's good. :) I would request less use of spoilers, though; looking for stuff involves a bit of "digging" with all those spoilers.

@Pietro Elitov: Seems good so far, though you're missing some details (such as your background; sailor, it looks like?).

@Arden Rydell: Concept seems fine; let me know when you have the character ready for review.

@Rosco Barrelbottom/Giacomo Berrythwaite: Both concepts seem fine; let me know when one/both is ready for review.

@Kertack: Still waiting...

@Thyra Fireforge: As with most of the other unfinished characters, seems fine, let me know when completed.

@Halsere Chael-Oren: As above; let me know when you have more details. (Does "magician" mean wizard?)

Oops, yeah, he has the Sailor background.

Then gimme some deets.

Also, it occurs to me that I always forget to specify a pantheon. The only one I'm really familiar with is Golarion's but that feels wrong for this campaign. So maybe I'll just say any (non-evil) deity from the back of the PHB is fine. "Concept clerics" would be acceptable as well.

Background
Found to have quick wits from a young age and a disposition for the magical arts, Halsere was one of a rare lucky few that were apprenticed to wizards who worked for the Duke Stefan Karameikos as part of an idea to develop magical talent the same way that the Principalities of Glantri did. He will always be grateful for this opportunity.

In line with his desire to serve and repay this debt, Halsere looked for opportunities beyond magical service and was accepted as a member of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos intelligence service - something that he took vast delight and satisfaction with. Unfortunately his service only lasted two years. Documents that were signed out as being in his possession went missing and blame fell squarely on the young wizard... who had in fact not touched the documents at all. His protestations of innocence and claims of forgery fell on deaf ears and he was unceremoniously kicked out of government service.

He now needs some way of earning his way in the world and talk of a vampire has pricked his curiosity - the creature has undoubtedly amasses a great many secrets over the years of its existence and removal of such a foe would also stand him in good stead if he was to seek to prove his loyalty to the Duke anew.

Is this now considered to be a full character worthy of consideration? I believe the word is set in Mystara correct? I do love that setting

"A'right, take 'er look an' tell me if my sheet looks ter be in order, please."

The burly dwarven women with a long braid falling down her back, a cascade of burnished copper hair, bow's 'afore the the masters of masters holding a paper that'll decide her fate and if this'll be her first adventure outside the temple.

"I think you'll find it arr to be in order, master"

Kertack is ready for consideration - he was training to be a paladin of Torm but couldnt quite meet their standards of discipline and has been recently 'drummed out' of the church. He now plans on making it as a knight (but struggles to stay committed to much, so he's not really likely to make much of himself).

I rolled some overly generous stats - I could see him having penalties to wisdom, so I'd like to suggest dropping that to an eight?

I'd like to mull over boons/bonds and so forth given the lapsedness of his faith (the acolyte ones don't really feel right). I figure he might still be able to utilise the 'shelter of the faithful' but only under false pretenses. The 'access to healing at a temple' stuff would only be in out of the way places and need a successful deception check (or something?)

Dotting here.
I got me a gruff dwarven wizard concept i'd been meaning to play for a while, i might get that guy in here

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 3) = 15 =14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 1) = 16 =15

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 4) = 13 =12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 6) = 14 =13

not shabby, i can work with this

It looks like she took a feat for another +1.

Dwarves get a +2 racial bonus and then the Heavy Armor Mastery gives another +1 to Strength as long as it doesn't raise it above 20. The feat is on page 167 of the Player Handbook, I believe I'm allowed to take it, the prerequisite for the feat was proficiency in heavy armor and the fighter class gives armor proficiency(all).

*edit looks like I was ninja'd by ninja
But RDN has the right of it too I see.

But how are you even taking a feat at 1st level when you're not a variant human?

Oh, my apologies, I guess I misread the rules when creating her, I am still pretty new to 5th edition.

I'll uh take it off.

Edit* Looks like as a fighter I can take a feat in replace of my ability score improvement class feature so I could take my first feat at 4th level!

Yep, that's not even a fighter-only thing; that's just how feats work, you take them in place of stat boosts. Of course, fighters get the most stat boosts, so...

Doesn't necessarily have to be verbatim, but clear and containing all relevant details. The goal is so that if I'm going to make a post as GM and need to see how one of your things works, I can just look in your profile. If instead I have to either ask you and wait for an answer or wait until I can get home to my book, then the whole game has to wait.

So the goal is "Don't leave the GM with unanswered questions about your spells/abilities".
