Round 1:

After Benedictus and Good Folks; it’s Nidhi’s turn.

I wonder what her workout regimen entails... Eyes focused on Cahal's rear, Nidhi fails to notice the danger in front of them until the fight has broken out. Nidhi looks up. ”What,” Nidhi comments in surprise, as if someone has just told her pigs can fly.

Nidhi pulls out her weapon and attempts to fire a shot at the skeletal enemy.

Nidhi, remember the bow gets your full bonus to confirm, so that should be d20+5 - a definite hit. Also, feel free to roll damage for the critical portion of the hit as well to save time in case it does hit.

After Nidhi delivers a perfect shot with her bow, Florence steps forward just past the doorway, longspear in hand. "Ben, get behind us - hurry!" she calls as she attempts to strike the skeleton.

Heavily wounded but still up, Benedictus grits his teeth in pain and stumbles backwards. His blood is everywhere, and the shock almost causes him to pass out, but eventually the scholar manages to regain his composure. Now protected by his friends and, hopefully, out of the skeletal champion’s reach, Benedictus finds new confidence. Despite the wounds, his mind still thinks lucidly—enough to realize that casting a spell in this situation could cost him his very life. Instead, Benedictus grabs a wand from inside his jacket and suddenly vanishes!

Cahal, the pews are difficult terrain, so double movement. To get where you are from where you started is 35' of movement I think. Please take a closer look and let me know if I'm mistaken, but I don't think I am.

Benedictus, please clarify your actions as I'm not sure you can do what you just did.

You've moved to a space with pews, so that's a move action. It's a move action to draw a wand. It's a standard action to use it. So that's too many actions. Further, it'll provoke (the movement if it's not a withdraw provokes).

I think you meant to 5' step, which you cannot do to that square. You can do that to the square just south of Florence however if you wish.

Nidhi starts off the response well, criticalling! Her arrow does less damage than she feels it should (DR) but a well struck blow none the less. Florence manages to chip away at the skeleton, but with damage reduction she only flakes off a little bone. Cahal moves up (though maybe not as far as she is on the map) and tries to trip the old warrior, but it proves elusive and she fails. Zilchus delays for Cahal, and though she might not be in flank, he hits anyway, and does some solid damage, though reduced by DR. Benedictus draws a wand - and disappears!

The skeleton turns to Zilchus, who’s done the most damage so far, and strikes at him with that spear. Once again, it concentrates and the spear flows with negative energy
spear on Zilchus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 damage: 1d8 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 9 + (4) = 15 (d6 is negative energy)

The skeletal figure looks the same, though you think it's mouth hangs open a little further than before as it misses Zilchus with its stroke.

Round 2, Init 6

"Wha-Ben?" Florence blinks with surprise as her terribly injured companion pulls something out of his pouch and simply vanishes. Although she figures that it was some sort of defensive mechanism, she doesn't have time to stop and ponder - they still have a skeleton to put to rest.

She moves out of the doorway and behind Zilchus, shooting Nidhi an apologetic glance for having stepped into her line of fire earlier. Although she knows that she's less likely to score a solid blow with the warrior between her and the skeleton, she's pretty sure that she can at least help Zilchus out while he fights it. From behind Zilchus she pokes and prods at the skeleton, trying to distract him from his target!

As Nidhi goes to release her grip on the fletching of the arrow, her ankle brushes up against something - someone - invisible. Spider?! "Eep!" Nidhi tenses and shoots her arrow astray.

As soon as his attention finally sets on the battle, Benedictus sees with great relief that the heat of the fight has moved a little away from him. This opens a lot of possibilities…

Zilch, you flank with the wall? In any case, you hit like a truck!

Nidhi’s arrow flies wide of the mark as her fears get the better of her. Florence tries to entangle the skeleton to protect Zilchus. Cahal tries another tripping maneuver but the champion stays on its feet. Zilchus strikes a mighty blow and, just barely, ends the creatures attacks with his critical. Benedictus may save a wand charge as the skeletal champion is crumbling as he draws it.

”My time of service is over.” whispers the skeleton as the electric-blue light fades from its eyes. It collapses in a heap of ancient bones, as the spear clatters to the ground.

"I'm on it," Nidhi puts away her bow and approaches the altar. She examines the area for anything unusual.

After looking the area over, Nidhi returns to the same spot to stare at the next door. "What do you think is on the other side? More skeletons with glowing blue eyes?" Nidhi considers teasing Ben but decides against it.

Nidhi glances down at Ben. As if suddenly remembering the contents of her inventory, "Oh! Err..." Nidhi fumbles with her two cloak pockets until her hand grasps what she's searching for. Nidhi reveals a Wand of Cure Light Wounds (26 charges.) How does this thing heal again?

Nidhi makes a grandiose gesture while holding the stick, gently prodding Ben's shoulder.

Wand of Cure Light Wounds (25): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"I changed my mind! I'm not stealing your stupid skull! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!" Zilchus, still angry, picks up the skeleton's skull and hurls it at the wall. Zilchus offers another sneer at the bones, deliberately stepping on a femur to see if it will crack under his boots. "Don't you attack my friends...or BEN...ever again."

Zilchus slowly calms down, unsure they this particular enemy so infuriated him.

"Yes, thank you Zil". Ben smiles at his friend while Nidhi heals him. "Actually, I feel much better now. Thank you Nidhi". Ben stands up and pats the girl on her shoulder. He looks in her eyes for a few seconds. Then a few seconds more. For a moment, the scene may appear embarassing. Then Ben bursts in a joyful laughter.

"Belive me, Nidhi...", the scholar manages to say, still laughing, "those moves were...great!" Ben continues to laugh for a few seconds more, then suddenly stops. He does it so abruptly that is behaviour may seem not completely human. "Anyway, you don't need to make any gesture with a wand", he explains with professorish attitude, "you just need to point it in the right direction, or touch someone with it in case the spell needs it. That's all". When the lesson is over, Ben makes a move to follow Zilchus, turning on himself. He turns again just to blink friendly at Nidhi. "Thank you".

Ben will help Zilchus with his checks. He automatically succeeds at his checks to aid another (+9 modifier).

Cahal walks over to Zilchus, while the others are busy and comments with a whisper: "'My friends... or BEN'? Mmmh... Am I friend then?"

She doesn't wait for the answer. Instead, she moves up to a pew and sits, taking a break to drink some water.

"What?" Zilchus says after trying to remember what he said in his fit of pique. "Of course you are. I would die for you. I think I've proven that again and again." Zilchus answers seriously. "If you support me and the Ruby Prince, we're friends, no doubt."

Flo flinches as Zilchus hurls the skull at the wall. For a moment she simply gazes at him with surprise and then she laughs as well. "Aw, Zilchus...we love you too," she teases gently. "Thanks for keeping an eye on the rest of us."

Walking over to Nidhi, she offers the girl a pat on the shoulder. "Ben's right, you did great. And I'm glad that there's someone else here that can use those things, in case something h...er, in case I'm busy doing something else."

Then she glances around and adds in a whisper, "To be honest though, I think it's more fun to wave them around - don't you?"

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The party, lead by Zilchus, searches the room thoroughly, but aside from the dead champion, find little of value. It’s clearly a shrine to Nethys, and still sanctified from the look of it (no damage anyway). The doors to the west are unlocked, but unopened.

On the body, when you get around to it, you find a mithral chain shirt, a wooden holy symbol of Nethys, a ring of keys, and the spear, which looks rather nicer than you’d expect from a skeleton.

Spear of the Watchful Guardian, Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 20:
This magically strengthened bronze-tipped +1 spear enables its wielder to better face a variety of foes.

Originally created by priests of Nethys for use by their temple guards, a spear of the watchful guardian also grants its wielder arcane aid to strike true. Once per day as a standard action, the wielder of a spear of the watchful guardian can alter the physical properties of the weapon, allowing it to bypass damage reduction of one of the following types: bludgeoning, cold iron, silver, or slashing. This change lasts for 5 minutes.

In addition, if the wielder of a spear of the watchful guardian fails an attack roll, as an immediate action once per day, she can retroactively add a +1 competence bonus on that roll. If this bonus is enough to make the failure a success, the attack roll succeeds.

Finally, a spear of the watchful guardian sharpens the senses of its wielder, granting her a +2 insight bonus on Perception checks. It is worth 8,500gp.

"Ooh...the spear radiates a magical aura but I'll be darned if I can figure out just what it is or what it does," Florence sighs after studying the spear for a few moments. She steps out of the way, bowing to Ben with a bit of a flourish. "Thanks for letting me have a try at it, but I guess it's time for the expert to step in!"

Detect Magic + Spellcraft (Aid Florence?): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Nidhi takes out her Masterwork Thieves' Tools and examines the doors to the left as she talks. "Well we should definitely take the spear. It looks nicer than what I would expect a skeleton to wield. And look at that mithral chain shirt! If we try to pawn it together as a historical garb, maybe it'll sell for more? I could recount the story of when we defeated the guardian of Nethy's shrine! How Ben almost died!" Nidhi slides her index finger across her throat and her eyes widen.

Nidhi awkwardly steps over the corpse of their fallen foe, concentrating on not slipping on the smooth bone. See map.

Disable Device (left doors): 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 = 18

Nidhi stops her movements to look at the others. "So... Should we do anything about the corpses of the Scorched Hand? I mean, they were honorless jerks, but maybe we shouldn't leave their corpses here... Do you think this place has a graveyard? We should bury them with garlic at least." Maybe we should take that purple hat back to Abdur... I wonder what he'd say. Nidhi is so caught up in her own thoughts that she overlooks the ring of keys. If Nidhi manages to unlock the doors, she nods at Zilchus as she puts away her tools.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

"Well...not that I'm really an expert on armor but maybe Zilchus or Cahal could make use of the chain shirt," Florence points out. "But if not then I'm sure we'd get a good price for selling it. Mithral is pretty expensive, isn't it?"

"At any rate yeah, I think the plan for the Scorched Hand is to take them with us once we get done here...or at least send someone to fetch their bodies. I don't like the idea of just leaving them to rot either...wait, garlic? Did you say bury them with garlic? Why?"

"We should probably take them up top and burn them. Stop them from re-animating as jerks. Last thing we need is for them to end up like this bag of bones."

Zilchus politely declines the spear and chain shirt for now, giving the first chance to Cahal to take. They don't fit his style. It's much harder to close one's eyes and poke than to swing away with his falchion.

When others are ready, he will open the double doors.

"Or place them in the pool..." adds Cahal, letting the silence hang in the heavy air.

How can I explain that...Mmh, let's just say that once per day you can alter the physical properties of the weapon. This would allow you to damage those creatures that usually you wouldn't be able to damage with an ordinary, or even a magic spear. Does anyone want it? Oh, it also improves your senses!" Ben smiles, feeling like an auctioner trying to encourage the customers to make a bid.

"Now, shall we go? Do you think we have explored the entirety of this site? I mean, that would be very strange. The Scorched Hand was looking for something here. And we've not found it yet...I propose we keep searching!"

Two columns carved to resemble men with their arms crossed over their chests, holding a khopesh in one hand and an ankh in the other, support the ceiling of this long chamber. Deep alcoves in the walls form burial chambers, some of which are sealed with stone doors. Other sepulchers just have sarcophagi tucked inside, while a few appear empty. To the north and south, wide passages exit the room through the east wall, each leading to stone double doors.

This catacomb was reserved for the high priests of the Sanctum. Three of the crypts are still sealed with stone doors that were not intended to be opened (sealed - must be destroyed to be bypassed). Some crypts are also empty at this time, leaving three with sarcophagus’ that might be opened more easily - if you’re willing to desecrate the dead…

As you make your way into the chamber to look around, a body rises up out of one of the empty chambers (the eastern one) and shambles toward you. The undead form has a faster moving gait than a normal zombie, and is unwrapped, though it looks like a zombie. While still old, it is much fresher than the ancient bones you’d expect to find here!

Florence gasps as the coffer corpse rapidly closes the distance and clenches its fingers around Zilchus' throat. With her only remaining magics being of little use or too dangerous to use in the tight quarters, she reaches into her pack and pulls out a vial of holy water.

"Hey! You let him go, you...you...creepy thing!" she cries as she flings the vial.

Holy Water (Ranged Touch; Into Melee): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 4 = 9
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

Round 1, Init 8

"...urk...ik..." Zilchus cries out in a loud, booming voice, trying to alert his companions to his less-than-good state.

Unable to say much, Zilchus draws his morningstar and swings hard at the creature, trying to break grapple.

1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 5 - 1 = 14 to hit;
1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10 damage.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Nidhi connects, through cover, with the corpse, though she does no damage due to the DR. Benedictus just barely hits the creature with his scorching ray causing it to collapse on the ground, seemingly destroyed. Florence hurls a flask of holy water into he fray, but throws wide and only splashes the undead. Zilchus, grabbing his morningstar, tries to bludgeon the corpse, and connects thanks to it being prone. He does less damage than he’d like due to DR. Cahal moves into flank without drawing an AoO from the downed creature.

Almost as soon as it falls, the wounds seem flush, and while they do not heal, they do not seem to bother the creature either. It opens its eyes, stands (without provoking, special ability), and looks down on you as if to say, I cannot be destroyed so easily…

As it does so, you all suffer the effects of its fearsome gaze. Sense Motive checks from everyone please. Also, DC 14 Will save or be panicked for 2d4 rounds. Make the save, and you’re still shaken for one round. Fear effect.

It then tries to slam into Zilchus yet again.
Zilchus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 plus grab: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

Zilchus is missed by quite a margin.

- Round 2-
Coffer Corpse - 20 (-17hp)
Nidhi - 19
Benedictus - 16
Florence - 10
Zilchus - 8 (-5hp)
Cahal - 4
-Round 3-
Benedictus - 16

Everyone is up!

Round 2, Init 8

Zilchus looks stunned as the skeleton rises again to reach for him.

"Nidhi!? BEN!?! WHAT'S GOING ON!?" Zilchus yells as he tries to keep his head about him...

1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 1 = 19 Will save vs. DC13

...and does! He strikes again with his morningstar, grunting with the effort.

1d20 + 5 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 - 1 + 1 = 23 to hit; (+grunt)
1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10 blunt damage.

Stats of Zilch:

[ dice]2d4+7[/dice] slashing damage.

Round 2, Init 10

Will (DC 14): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

As the creature rises once again, Florence drops her longspear to the floor with a clatter. "Nonono I can't do this!" she screams as she turns and flees back down the hallway behind them.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Don't forget your sense motive please.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

Whoops!

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Panicked Duration: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

If there's anything amiss about the corpse (besides it getting up again), it's likely to be lost on Florence as she focuses on putting distance between herself and it!

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 112d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8 Ouch! 8 rounds panicked is really 16 out of the fight...

The coffin's display shakes Cahal to the core. She grows suddenly pale, very pale, and sweat surfaces on her face as she screams, dropping her longspear: "II CAN'T BE KILLED! LET'S GET OUTTA HERE!!!"

Not which way Cahal would likely go...Perhaps cower in the corner, after I try to open the doors behind her? Or would she dash for the surface?

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Yeah, Cahal is trapped. You won't run past the fearsome undead, and the double doors behind you are locked. So pick your favorite corner, or crypt, and cower away...

Northwest corner looks comfy for foetal positioning ;)

Neutral Human Bard/14

Round 2:

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Will Save (14): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Panicked (Rounds): 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

Nidhi stands motionless for a moment, eyes locked with the undead. As if struck into motion, Nidhi screams: "Ga- GA GAAAAAARLIIIIIIIIIIIIC!" as she runs, her hands thrown into the air. Nidhi's bow teeters back and forth on the floor until it lands with a light womp.

Full move/60 feet:
15 feet right (away from danger)
1 up, 2 down: 1d2 ⇒ 2
45 feet
