Latheas uses his hasted flight to flit about, looking for more danger and anything else of overt interest.

"An arm there," Latheas points out the arm that Quarr confirms. "What else we got going on here. And does anyone have an explanation how the fog and spiderbeast came to be here? A strange and deadly combination against lesser Pathfinders..."

Only when Latheas is certain that the danger is past (as well as the zippity-zip power of his haste/flight combo have worn off) does Latheas settle down to examine the arm and body. He will lift the table off the arm, examining the arm/body with a magic eye. Cast Detect Magic. He looks for the rest of the body as well.

After that excitement is done, and after Latheas boasts a bit about his kill, he does deign to flip a few pages in efforts to learn more about the lantern.

The large man is bathed in fire, but comes out with only a minor burn on his cheek. "A trap in a library? Odd..." he remarks as he sheathes his weapon and retrieves his piston maul.

Once the weapon of his station in the Ulfen Guard is secure, Thorgrim picks up his tridents, scowling as he sees the bits of goopy ooze drip from them. "Need better tridents..." he says summarily, reminded of how ineffectual they are.

Once they have determined that the library is safe, Thorgrim sets up watch in the main hall. "Let me know once you have found the information we are looking for on the forged documents about the sale in Kintargo."

As the group looks on stunned that the Ulfen man knew that, he he raises an eyebrow. "What?! I pay attention."

Thorgrim has none of those skills trained, thus he will sit out on this round of research.

As the creatures disappear, Niko nods and puts his pistol back in its holster.

Upon seeing Quart toy with the arm, Niko frowns, but says nothing.

After going through the rooms, Niko is glad to be back at the research.

Latheas and Niko, meanwhile, get to work looking through the archive to piece together what the intruder was doing in this place. It seems that someone here was researching the Dimension of Dreams. Pages have been torn from some books, only to be used as bookmarks in others. Notes on the torn pages reference literature contained in the Lower Planes Archive elsewhere in the sealed wing. According to the registry, one book on the Dimension of Dreams is missing: the Libram of Forgotten Dreams. This book purportedly contains dozens of rituals pertaining to that realm.

It seems there is still quite a bit here to research though but after a long day of battling undead spider beasts and necromantic mists followed by eight hours of studying, you feel the need for a rest.

---

The next day you return to the library and are sealed into the dangerous wing again, for the safety of the others elsewhere. Niko spends a full day trying to piece something together but most of his time is wasted organizing the chaotic documents and books.

---

1d12 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

On the third day, Niko has an insight: the researcher veered away from the Dimension of Dreams and toward seemingly random books on
Abaddon, the Abyss, and Hell. They have underlined unrelated passages and circled chapter numbers. Niko even detects a code in the underlined passages and grants everyone a +4 bonus on all future Research checks during this challenge.

---

Unfortunately, the fourth day is again unproductive.

Keep researching! Still more to discover here and I think Niko could use some help; this is a pretty high DC and lots of HP.

"Zey was a dick anyway...just like the rest of the VCs. Pricks the lot ot them. Think any of them would spend a week studying in this dump to save of us? Yeah...yeah...that's what I thought."

Thorgrim uses the 'spent' books and creates a semi-comfy lounging area in the middle of the library. His piston maul's heft rests on top of a rare copy of the Aroden's Fall and the Implications for Modern Theology. The book is indenting from the sheer weight of the hammer.

The man himself is lounging in a pallet of books lashed together with some rope into a makeshift recliner. "You lot find anything?" he says as Osirion: Glorified Taldor? rests over the Ulfen man's eyes, hiding the shifting light patterns from his view creating an optimal sleep shade.

At Latheas' remark, Thorgrim grins. "I'll never die. Tis' the Bold Strider way. Walk into danger and danger will miss you. Run and it will shoot you in the back."

Tossing the book from his face, Thorgrim stands and stretches. "I bet Zey ran. Seemed a frail man. Need more powerful leaders and less people who kowtow to the Decimvirate. Think Torch is still hiring?" the man asks no one in particular.

Continuing, Thorgrim wanders the archives, holding his maul, bashing a few books occasionally. "Torch would've never put me in a library..."

On the fifth day Maximo takes the lead on the research to give Niko a break. He discovers that the nameless researcher you are tracking became more haphazard and inexplicable in their studies, though with patience and help from Latheas and Quarr, you determine that they were attempting to decipher some sort of encoded message-some of which earlier patrons iof this library left in the margins of books. Luckily Maximo is quite skilled with languages and grants everyone a further +4 for research here.

On the fifth day Maximo, Latheas, and Quarr again work together and by midday are able to break the code: In the Astral References, there is a hidden passage behind the third shelf which is revealed by pulling a lever hidden behind the second book on the fourth shelf.

Latheas is really struggling with motivation right now. Not sure anyone can provide any reason why Zey is worthwhile or likable enough to waste this much time and energy on...let alone the chances of some apparently *extremely* esoteric/arcane research is likely to help. Let alone...all this research just to find another, even more secret part of the library!?

Latheas kicks back, drinking and thinking. He begins to doodle in one of the books.

Thorgrim shrugs. "He seemed fair enough. We weren't just lackeys to the man, at least he didn't treat us that way, not like those scheming a@!!#~!s in Cheliax or Taldor."

"Hell, it seems like half of my missions have been to cover the indiscretions of that Colson fellow from Andoran." Thorgrim states as he rolls his eyes. "I thought the Society was supposed to do something of value, but it is just another power-grab. At least in the Realm of the Mammoth Kings, there are no pretenses."

"Shit... Should I even stay in this stupid fellowship of lies?" Thorgrim asks aloud to no one in particular.

Upon finding the door, Thorgrim has half a mind to smash the bookcase. "Should have just let me smash everything and we could have found this much quicker." he muses aloud, half-serious.

"I beg your pardon!" Maximo retorts at Thorgrim's words. "When it comes to schemes there can be no comparison between Cheliax and Taldor!" He tugs his coat straight and sniffs with indignation.

"Without a doubt Taldor is far superior at scheming." He says with a little pride, then catches himself and clears his throat to amend his statement. "Ehem... it is part of the reason that those of noble heart have distanced themselves from it in favor of the Sovereign Court."

"I know little of Torch but have borne witness to his legacy." Maximo veers suddenly on topic with a serious glare. "A legacy of assassinations, massacres, slavery, and greed! True, there have been a few bad apples in the Society, but one should never discard a barrel with a few bad apples when one could make cider!"

Gazing off in thought, he begins talking like old men do about the good old times. "I have witnessed amazing events in my time with the Society. I was with those who climbed the Wall of Heaven and recovered the wisdom of a hundred Masters. I was there when we stemmed the Silent Tide and saved all of Absalom. I have defeated vile cultists and freed the oppressed. I have won the favor of a celestial and rescued a fair maiden from the clutches of Hellknights." Maximo smiles to himself at the memory of the lovely Paracountess.

"The Pathfinder Society may not always bring good to bear, but when they do, they make a difference."

And with that he draws Big Love and follows after Thorgrim.

ooc:
Excellent, excellent back-and-forth everyone! Sorry for the slow posting, but holidays and traveling left me little time for PbP. And I teach on Mondays so I usually spend a fair part of the day preparing before I have to teach in the afternoon. But now I should be able to return to a normal schedule so let's get back on track!

All talk of noble honor and Society ethics aside, Thorgrim and Maximo lead the way into the secret archive side-by-side. With a soft click the bookcase swings out quietly and an ancient spiral staircase presents itself, ascending at a steep incline. Scratched into the stone walls is graffiti in dozens of languages. At the top of the staircase, a stone archway opens into a cramped vault with four-and-a-half-foot high ceilings held up by squat, stone columns. Dozens of small nooks line the walls of this confined space, filled with musty old pillows, dust-covered books, and ancient cobwebs. Old candles, long unlit, sit in pools of congealed wax alongside empty lanterns. Two low-ceiling corridors lead off in opposite directions. The entire secret space gives the impression of being a refuge from the rest of the library, a quiet place to study or socialize that has long since been forgotten.

A single pair of footprints in the dust leads down one winding corridor. Near the back of the network of tiny rooms, there is a space cleared of cobwebs with a chalk diagram on the floor and a ring of candles that still burn with heatless flame. An enormous tome-the Libram of Forgotten Dreams-lies open atop the diagram.

Libram of Forgotten Dreams:
The Libram of Forgotten Dreams contains numerous scribbles in its margins, including the following notes in the same handwriting.

The Professor: Masked. Woman: Enigma. What does she want?

322. 322. 322. This isn’t my name anymore.

This passage is familiar from my last dream. Is she guiding me? I don’t know who she is, but she will help me be free of the Professor. She has to. I will make her.

I won’t let the Criers take me back. I WON’T LET THEM.

The old crone in my dreams wants the lantern in exchange for my freedom. Good. Better to be rid of this cursed thing.

The black stars beckon.

DC 15 Knowledge (arcana or planes):
It describes the nature of—and how to travel to—the Dimension of Dreams. A comprehensive study of the rituals within would take weeks, if not months.

Whoever was here also left behind some treasures: a scroll of breath of life, a cloak of resistance +4, and two pinches of dust of darkness. They also left behind an amulet of polished obsidian beads worth 10 gp.

Yes, the footprints came to this ritual room.

As you stand arguing about what the next course of action should be, the candlelight gradually grows to an unnatural intensity. Soon, a shimmering form of golden light blossoms into being, taking the form of a Garundi woman in regal robes and with the symbol of a winged eye hanging around her neck. The apparition first takes on a stern, chastising countenance, raising one hand in the air as if to castigate everyone in the room. Then, as her luminous eyes register her many guests, she adopts a less aggressive posture.

See the map for a picture.

“Heavens blessed,” she whispers. “You’re not the same guests at all, are you?” While clearly some form of spirit, there is no visible malevolence in this phantasmal woman’s eyes. Rather, she overflows with a palpable aura of compassion and concern. “My name is Aliyas Ardenvaugh, I am—I was—curator of this wing of the Forae Logos. It... It’d been so long since I’ve seen another soul. Now so many guests in just a short time! How unusual. Are you peers of the woman who was here? Three-twentytwo?” She wrinkles her nose at the name.

Niko follows after the party, and stands peering at the room as Latheas examines the items. While Max and Quarr study the footprints, Niko squats down on his haunches and grabs a pinch of dust between his thumb and finger, slowly grinding it and letting it fall in a shower to the floor.

This is queer. What sort of person takes a number for a moniker?..

When the apparition appears, Niko stands, his hand moving unconsciously towards his weapons, but then stops as the woman speaks. "Peers...of a sort. What did she 322 want here?" He asks.

"Who does #2 work for?" Latheas asks the obvious question. "Why was she here?"

Latheas makes his way around the room, keeping an eye on the apparition.

"Are you a spirit, m'lady? How is it that you have come to be here and not moved on to the afterlife?" Maximo looks sideways at the apparition.

She is not evil.

"Perhaps the lingering power of my patron Aroden still lives on in me; I do not know why or how I am still here but I am."

"This woman, 322, the poor girl, cam here fleeing a fight she did not start. I offered her comfort and compassion but she refused both. I could tell she was troubled, but she preferred the company of the libram more than that of another wayward soul."

"She performed a ritual found in the text which put her to sleep. Eventually her body and possessions simply faded away. I feel she was drawn somewhere else by powerful magic."

Latheas looks around.

"How did she even find this place? We had to research in conjunction for days to find mention of this part of the library. And why is this section so hidden?" Latheas asks, letting others ask the more probing questions.

Quarr begins deducting all of the possibilities that could have happened to her. Spells? Planar travel? Aliens?......

Grabbing a bottle from his pouch Quarr drinks the contents causing his eyes to glaze over and become opaque.

Hunched over in the room, Thorgrim looks at the ghost lady before realizing that his task is complete. "Well, we know what happened to her. She's in some other realm and unless you lot know how to plane hop, we should go get ale and report back to the Lodge. I bet Trotter can handle this." the Ulfen man remarks, not entirely enthused by the Decimvirate's choice in him to go around to two libraries to deal with mundane stuff.

Niko frowns at the revelation, pondering what ritual the woman may have performed.

KN: arcana: 1d20 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (16) + 10 + (2) = 28

"Mistress, did this woman carry anything unusual? A lantern, specifically." Niko ask the spirit lady, then goes on to describe the lantern from the description he read.

Quarr drinks an elixir but discovers that no one else is present in the room except the spirit of Aliyas Ardenvaugh.

She answers Latheas, "It was not always so but many ages ago someone decided that it would make a cozy retreat for a dedicated group of scholars."

Quarr wrote:

To Quarr she responds, "She performed a powerful and complex ritual that shunted her sleeping mind into the Dimension of Dreams. It did not send her into any one particular person’s dream but rather into the raw psychic essence of that plane—into the untempered echoes of memory between dreams. I know it is a place of great wonder and just as great danger. Those who travel there in dreams can use their will to effect great and impossible change to the dreamscapes around them. Those that travel there bodily have no such gift, and risk death... or worse."

Quarr wrote:

Again she answers, "I did not see the battle—merely heard it—so I cannot offer a first-hand witness. She called them ‘Criers.’ She was terrified of them."

Thorgrim slaps Latheas on the back. "You seem to understand that plane-hopping recklessly is foolish. We should report our findings back to the Decimvirate." he concludes.

Seeing that the group is reticent, Thorgrim explains. "We found out about the lantern and have 322's location. That is what Shaine commissioned us for, "exhausting all avenues of research"; not for going to some Dreamrealm on the whim of a ghost."

As for how to get there and back, you have a whole book about it! You can purposefully wake yourself up to leave the dreamrealm. As for potential dangers, there are many nightmarish things that might exist in your minds.

And, as Niko pointed out, part of your mission was to recover the lamp but the other part was to locate the agent behind all this (322) and you have yet to do that.

Latheas grumbles, picking up the book on the dreamrealm again to better understand the dangers involved. He takes his time in re-reading it, occassionally reading cogent passages aloud so that all might hear and understand.

He's trying to explain the stuff two post above.

"We could probably get there...and get back easily enough. And so," Latheas summarizes, "we could get there and back with only some very relative difficulties inversely proportioned entirely on your intelligences...which means this party might get interesting."

Latheas offers the book to whomever wants to read it.

"By what ol' VC Dickface said we were supposed to do, I think we're done here. But if we want to continue, we know what to do."

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Well since you have to go there eventually to finish the scenario, I'll move us along. Also, has anyone played 05-09 The Traitor's Lodge with this character?

Overhearing your plans, Aliyas perks up. "If you wish to follow 322, I would be proud to offer assistance! I once studied the Libram of Lost Dreams when I was alive, you see, and I am familiar with the rituals therein. With your assistance, I could send your consciousnesses into the Dimension of Dreams to the same untempered dreamscape that 322 sought. What awaits you there, I do not know." She pauses before adding with a half smile, "But isn’t the chance to find the answer exciting? You are adventurers, no?"

In order to do this, you must perform an occult ritual called Reflection of the Memory Pool, which puts you to sleep and sends your minds into the Dimension of Dreams.

Performing the ritual takes 50 minutes and requires the PCs succeed at three Knowledge (arcana) or Perform (sing) checks and three Knowledge (planes) checks. The ritual’s primary caster must perform five of these checks, each of which takes 10 minutes. Any number of secondary participants can perform the sixth check or use the aid another action to assist the primary caster. As she does not intend to travel to the Dimension of Dreams, Aliya cannot act as the primary caster, but she can automatically succeed at the sixth check or any check to aid the primary caster.

Latheas finally agrees, but thinks they would be better off getting a real arcanist to run the ritual.

"Just so we're clear: I don't know what the f#$# I'm doing, really. I know enough that I probably won't kill us, but I wanted to give you all fair warning that this might be a bad idea," Latheas explains.

"So if you have loved ones, be they people or yaks or catpeople, we have time to say your final goodbyes, just in case. We can wait."

Latheas waits to see if anyone wants to flee or leave before he continues on explaining things.
