Dark Ages Vampire - Bloodlines

Game Master Dennis Harry

Attendees seeking a seat or have a seat in the Inner Circle:

Assamite - Lord Bajazet al Nasir.

Brujah – Lady Meridie de Chancie, Lord Criatas, “Dark”Selena, Robin Leeland.

Cappadocian – Lord Benne.

Gangrel – Milov Petrankov.

Lasombra - Prince Narses the Archbishop of Nod

Malkavian – Antione le Fanu, Lutz von Hohenzollern.

Nosferatu – Cristo Petradon, Simon.

Salubri – Brian Stack.

Setites – Sadir.

Social Combat:

Let me first thank Sir Dunstan and his excellent Game of Thrones campaign as the inspiration for this rules tweak. A shout out to Vitaliano who also does an excellent job as a player in that campaign.

Game of Thrones has a Social Combat system that, while not translatable directly, I used as inspiration for this campaign.

This is a proposed rules set and I am more than happy to hear feedback from Players before I implement it in full.

Roleplaying is still required to get your point across. However, I think a mechanical system could be beneficial for this scenario, a scenario quite unlike anything I have ever done in a Vampire game before.

Making My Case

To convince a “voter” to side with your Sire, you may roll the following set of Attributes and Abilities:

1. Against someone who is clearly NOT in your favor --- Manipulation+Subterfuge+Politics
2. Against someone who is NEUTRAL – Charisma+Expression+Politics

The difficulty of all rolls is that Cainites Willpower. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to win the contest. Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to make your case and can only attempt do so one time per night.

If you have Presence – Awe or Enrancement, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

Beware, failing in using Presence in Elysium can lead to Sanctions by Thomas Brexiano.

Also beware, Cainites may try to turn this system around on you…

But What if Someone Else Tries This on a Voter I just Brought to my Side?

Amount of successes is a key factor here, you will want to score as many success as you can to ensure that a rival does not try to take that vote from you!

Certain NPC’s already believe that others are in their favor and would never change their votes. Those will be the toughest cookies to break.

Note this system cannot be used on:

Your In-Clan rivals, no amount of sweet talking or bribes will change their minds they all want this position badly.

Prince Narses, he simply will not entertain such discourse. Of course, this does not mean you cannot try to get into the ears of one of his Childer to have them speak with him…

Discerning My Quarry’s Intent

How can I tell if someone is for or against me despite what they are saying?

Make a Perception+Empathy+Politics roll.

The difficulty is 10, less that Cainites Humanity score. Those closer to the Beast are much harder to read. For every Century over 300 years that Cainite has lived, the DC will be increased by 1, topping out at 10, as these Cainites have well and truly mastered this game to have existed for so long in the first place.

Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to ferret out their intent and can only attempt do so one time per night. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to ascertain their intent.

If you have Auspex – Read the Soul or Invade the Mind, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

How else can I make my case?

The use of Presence, while frowned upon, is much less cause for censure than using Dominate. Dominate does not work on a Cainite whose blood is closer to Caine than your own. If you seek to use Dominate to convince a voter (or perhaps one of the Childer?) to vote for your Sire, it would be best used elsewhere in the city.

Boons – the boon system of quid pro quo can also be used to gain votes. You will need to offer something of course that that voter does not have or cannot get from another candidate.

Eliminate my rivals. This one is obvious though failure to do so without detection may subject YOU to the Final Death!

As the spectre seemingly rises from the Tzimisce Table, Ranerius Bernerius's eyes widen in surprise. It would seem the abilities of the undead were indeed versitile.

The words, however, were disturbing on multiple levels.

If that's the Tzimisce school of thought, then they are indeed alien to me. Humans maybe weaker, but they are not fangless sheep. Treat any beast harshly too long, and it rises up, and humans have the numbers. Also, we should guide humanity and inspire it, so we can draw inspiration from it. What's the point of keeping humanity in fetid huts if it means you yourself will be occupied with nothing but tyranny? Where is the progress? Where is the improvement? I hope this Voivide does not speak for all his kind. A whole clan in such a mindset would be a loss.

The young Toreador shakes his head softly and says softly, "A shepherd who slaughters his own flock may find himself short on wool when the winter comes."

Toreador Table:
Quote:
Bassanio smiles affably, "It seems that someone is eager to get a head start on these proceedings", he states as he points at the Brujah Childe approaching the sole member of Clan Gangrel at his Table, another young Lick.

"Yes. I think I rather admire his spirit," He admits, before looking back to Bassanio, "Whatever happens, however the votes go. I wish you well, sir, as one 'newblood' to another." he offers his hand.

There is, after all, no need for bad blood between those others in the same predicaments he is.

Not wanting to burn too many bridges here :)

"Looking on these,. . . fellow Kindred, I wonder if any of them really understand." he says, almost absent-mindedly.

"But, enough of that. As yourself said, I'm new. From what I can see, the Kindred" motioning with a hand to indicate nearly all gathered, "are most like roosters. They take names and titles as their crown and waffle, thinking that it means something. It does, just not much when it comes down to it."

I would expect a unified front, even if it's just a charade, but some won't take their defeats very well. I'm in support of my Sire Lady Meridie for obvious reasons, after all she protects me and it's natural, but I have heard the others, and it will not go well if Criatas takes charge, but it might just be as bad if he loses also, but he will have no elected power, but it will turn into a internal war for us, that is why I seek friends, not so much to fight but as deterrents that ensure peace among also the other Clans that are divided" looking at Cantor straight to his eyes "What do you think, will you help me?"

Yet I believe it is easier to deal with the Ventrue and Toreador if we put a good front between the two of us, then by ourselves, since we have been 'advised' to speak to them, more me than you since I must help my Sire take the reins of our Clan and not Criatas, he will bring war and death to quickly."

And would war be a bad thing. It might clear out some of the older and weaker "Kindred", leaving room for more worthy ones. But he doesn't know nearly enough to make a choice yet, just weighing the different sides the best he can.

As the armed contingents roam to and fro the sense of danger within the city grows. You wonder if the Cainites see the powder keg that this city has become. Certainly you have seen it before humans that act i such a manner need very little to set them off to incite an escalation of violence. You only hope that you are not here to see it when it happens.

A figure walking down the street near to you is cursing and muttering to himself. A drunk or a madman you assume. He passes you and then sniffs the air. Turning back his eyes light up as he grin at you. "To who do you belong?" he asks pointedly.

Appropriately so.

The first roll was a DC to hear one Vampire whispering at one table in a room full of Vampires speaking.
The second roll was to identify the use of a power few of you, except those who have had certain abilities explained to them, would have heard of at this stage of unlife.

Andrew the Hardy
Rafael bows, "I would be delighted to. Tell me will you be attending this Blood Feast that the Prince has requested our presence for?"

Vitaliano scratched his chin a bit and looked over the others about. "Hmm...I can't say that I particularly know them, but I did meet a few. I believe I caught their names." he said before pointing to Andrew, Xing, and Brian and offering their names. If Brian is there. I hadn't noticed

He looked around the room "It would probably be best for me to engage the childe of the various Sires present with influence yes? Try to influence them towards choosing you. Though I hardly think you need the help with such a delusional competitor." he offered.

Brian is on the dais as the head of the Salubri but certainly the others seemed more friendly in disposition than did Brian.

Your Sire shakes his head and whispers heatedly, "You would think not but remember, the best way for our enemies to get to me is by helping that fool! You start with them, I'll start with the Tzimisce then we will regroup". Before you can answer he heads off towards Vykos his best fake winning smile spreading across his face.

Vitaliano nods to his sire before getting up and giving a polite bow to the ladies of his table and heading off to meet with Andrew for now as it seems that Xing is quite surrounded and is the center of attention at her table at present.

He carefully waits for the right moment to approach to speak, doing his best to remember his manners so as not to interrupt anyone. "I see that the evening has brought us together again, I'm quite glad to see a few familiar faces instead of being in a room with only strangers for such an event. I hope that the evening's activities have been to your liking?" he started in by making nice before broaching the subject at hand.

Quote:
Bassanio takes your hand in return, "A rivalry between us should develop because of our actions not our relations. Besides, the Doge may be powerful in Venice but the Council wields a power of its own no? Power is never held in only one hand".

"Wise words, sir, wise words," Here is hoping that no matter how it falls for the Toreador, we can each inspire civilization and beauty as it grows. "Pardon, I should mingle with others not of my clan if I'm to have any understanding of them. One cannot learn everything from observation and there is much to learn indeed."

Storyteller:
As you like, Sire. Unless you object, I hope to speak to Lord Benne himself as well. Death, like life, inspires many artists. Perhaps that is common ground for us.

With that, he smooths his clothing, inclines his head, and moves towards the the Cappadocian Lorenzo.

Assuming it isn't a rude time to do so, the Venice native of Clan Toreador introduces himself, true, he's already voiced his name before all, but that was before the prince and it seems rude not to state them to a peer, "Ranerius Bernerius of Clan Toreador, greetings to you, Signore."

Hearing another voice speak to him, Lorenzo removes his attention from Michael Santo for the moment.

"Greetings to you as well, Ranerius." Extending his hand, he continues in introduction, "Dr. Lorenzo Cappelli. To what do I owe the pleasure of your company this evening?"

Onfroi thinks for long moments as he begins to walk and then says an oath spoken yesterday is the same to me as an oath spoken two hundred years ago. I am a knight and vassal servant of our lord, and if he sees fit to reward me with any gift I am grateful. Every mortal man and woman I ever knew is long gone, I love and live life each day knowing the warriors promise that it would be my last, and yet I plan and build for myself to enjoy what years I have. Let our lord decide my fate and what is best for him and the clan, if I am to be traded it is not the first time, and it will be a grand new venture either way I think!

Ranerius clasps the hand firmly but without challenge or some silly attempt at dominance in the gesture, "Since I find honesty, albeit polite honesty, to be for the best, I seek you out due to a mixed medley of genuine curiosity about other Clans and people, social expectations at a gathering, and diplomacy for the voting at hand. While I do hope to gather support from your clan on my sire's behalf, even if I fail at this I hope to at least learn about it. I find little is truly a waste if one can at least come out of it less ignorant than he was before."

Xing nods to her grandsire.

"Much appreciated."

She goes back to listening in on whatever conversations and going abouts that she can looking toward the Salubri table from time to time.

"Ahh...honesty, something sorely lacking these nights. I am more than happy to have a conversation with you on any number of subjects, including why you believe, beyond the ties of blood, why Francois Villon deserves to have the seat on the Inner Circle more than Helene la Jouste or Rafael de Corazon."

"That being said, my friend, my time is not entirely my own. Once the inquest into Signore Santo and his sire begins, my attention will have to be dedicated to that endeavor."
