Horatio makes himself more comfortable as he glance around the table, his eyes continuing to study the captain.

”The Pilot-Major speaks for me in this,” he says as he takes another sip of the wine.

”Begging your pardon, M’Lady, if you’ll forgive me for saying so, somehow I doubt your invitation was based on purely philanthropic motivations,” he says with a small smile as he glances again at her gear, his eyes flicking around the obvious wealth of this estate, then turning to consider her again.

”That being the case, I’m willing to wager that this invitation was extended for more pragmatic reasons, but I’m not sure what they could be, or how we could help you. But the Pilot-Major is right; the more we know about what it is you might need from us, the better we’ll be able to lend a hand.”

Yeah, so a rich pirate captain didn't invite a bunch of "Noobs" to her estate simply to have a bottle of wine. There has to be a reason for us to be here; though I'm not sure how much a bunch of 7th level guys can help what's probably a 20th level Pirate Lord, but we shall see...

Horatio is going to try to assist Rain in her Diplomacy with the woman, given that this Captain seems to be more connected/supportive of other female captains/pirates than she does to males based on her comments so far. Also, Rain’s Diplomacy Check was already much better then mine :)

EDIT: So this bumps Rain's check to a 28 in Diplomacy, though Dhaavan's Diplomacy is by far the highest. Anyhow, GM; what can she tell us about why we're really here? :D

She smiles and says I apologize for the deception but it was necessary to get you here without arousing too much suspicion. You see Kerdak's hold over the fractious pirate lords is tenuous. He is not well liked and as such rules from might alone. As such his days are likely numbered. My name has been put forward on multiple occasions to become the Hurricane King, or Queen in my case, but I confess I have no interest in sitting on Lucrehold all day getting fat and letting others have glory and adventure. My place is on the sea with my crew, chasing down fat merchant vessels and Chelish slavers. She pauses for a moment before lowering her voice a bit so that there is no chance of being overheard. Which brings us to the true nature of why I summoned you here and arranged the invitation to get your Letter. I hope you understand that I am placing a great deal of trust in you all by revealing what I am about to say. Can I count on that trust? She waits for a moment and, assuming you all assented to keep quiet, continues.

She raises a hand to her head as if she has a headache, the men in the room getting a feeling of protectiveness and wishing to assuage her any pain. Rain snorts softly, seeing through the play for sympathy, which is no doubt in her mind deliberate in order to make the men amenable to what is to follow. I have been hearing numerous whispers centered around the nation of Cheliax. It is no secret that Cheliax hates the Shackles, but what is a secret is that I have learned of a plot for an invasion. Currently these are just rumors from various lips, I have no hard proof with which to take to the Pirate Council. That said, should Cheliax mount an invasion with the Shackles unprepared to repel them, our fractious nature would lead to our sure defeat and enslavement. That said, I cannot investigate these rumors myself, I am too well known to mount a circumspect inquiry. You however, who are beholden to no one and freshly made Free Captains, would be clear to pursue such a venture with a level of anonymity that I do not have. She smiles and says I mean no offense of course. You are rightly lauded for your deeds. However I am known to be a player of the political game and anyone associated with me would be placed under scrutiny. That is why I took such steps to get you here and did not just come out myself as your sponsor. This dinner here is no more than something that would be expected of a powerful Free Captain to welcome new Free Captains to the fold and as such should arouse no suspicion of collusion. In addition to my status, I am needed here to work on the Pirate Council as I can to push them towards the proper preparations. Here is what I propose. I would like you to pursue these rumors to their conclusion and bring me hard evidence of the Chelish plot and kill or capture any spies you uncover. In return, I would like you to ally with me and join my fleet. You would be left to your own devices and would not need to pay tribute or anything like that. The only requirement I would have is the ability to call on you should the need arise. You will get the gratitude and friendship of the Mistress of Quent, which if I may say, is not without benefit. So what do you think? Can the Shackles rely upon their newest Free Captains in their time of need to stop the scourge of tyranny and enslavement of a free people? She finishes in a rousing manner and despite yourselves you feel emboldened and invigorated.

Everything she said was the truth as she knows it without making a sense motive check.

Without waiting for the others, and having said little to nothing since arriving, Seijiro stands and nods vigorously in response to her request... "You have my support and aid, Lady Tessa."

Horatio nods at the woman, his palm slamming on the table in a firm, but involuntary support of her words.

”Hear, hear!” he says, then raises his glass and downs the contents swiftly.

”I am a native of Sargava and I can tell you now that I am already resolved to do all I can to stop the Empire of Cheliax and their devilish mendicants. As for your words about liberating slaves and deposing tyrants? Lady, would that we two were at sea now, for I would prove my resolve to you on the bodies of those filth who you stand opposed to,” he says to her, his tone completely sincere.

Then he stands and bows in apology for his outburst, realizing his speech was a bit more emphatic than he may have meant.

”My apologies M’Lady, and to you all; but when it comes to fighting slavers and tyrants I have already gladly spilled blood to stop those scum and I shall gladly do so again."

After his words he regards Lady Tessa directly for a moment before continuing.

"For what it is worth, I welcome the chance to do so at your side,” he says eventually, his eyes fixed on hers.

Then he takes a deep breath and calms down a bit, thinking more rationally on such the long term goal of not only unifying the Free Captains under a strong leader, but also doing what is necessary to destroy the slavers and tyrants that threaten their borders and people.

”However, I also know that to do such things requires more than a strong arm and a fierce heart. It also requires some tact and planning to execute such a long-term goal. No doubt you have considered this already, and, I suspect, you have some plans for missions that we may attempt to help accomplish this goal.”

”Therefore, I entreat you; please share with us the mission that would help you best and, by my blood, I shall do all I can to aid you in it.”

Meanwhile, this is what I had been thinking all along: Propper response :)

VAriel finds himself longing to join Tessa's quest to search out the evil Chelish plot. Before he can stand up though he sees Jiro and Horatio jump up pledging themselves to her cause. The sight of them jumping so quickly gave VAriel pause. He tempered his impulse and thought more of what Tessa offered. Still inspired by her charms and passion Variel in a quandry speaks up, An offer of joining your fleet sounds impressive and a hard temptation to avoid. Yet I frankly am concerned about it. You say we are independant and need to pay no tithe to you, that we are free to our own devices and I assume to fly our own colors and flag. However what protection can you provide if we are to remain disctint from you as your protection seems to be the largest asset that I can think of at this time. I am also concerned about what type of onus you would demand of us when the time came. You already said you do not desire the throne should Bonefist cede his control. What then would you consider needing us for?

Plese do not tkae these inquiries as a sign of refusal to work with you. On the contrary it is the fact that your suggestion has merit and is a worthy investiture of our time and efforts that make me ask more direct questions. Of course nothing you say leaves this room unless we, as the officers of the Dread Lady, are discussing future plans and how to bring the information that you seek.

While curious as to the answers that she may give to him Variel is moved enough that he is willing to join her in name only.

If we agree to this joint venture I have a question for you as well. Assuming that eventually we come to some agreement Variel quietly asks, What if anything do you know of Shanxia?

Well, it seemed the men were all too eager to join Tessa Fairwind. Rain considered if it had more to do with the woman herself rather than the cause, but held her tongue. Least she was certain Tessa was telling them the truth, as she knew it. Rain poured more wine into her goblet and took a long drink.

Variel had at least mentioned their future alliance with Tessa and what that would legitimately entail. His question regarding Shanxia caught her surprise. Did Variel believe there was some connection? Or simply pursuing his own inquiries...

Once Tessa had answered Variel's questions, Rain rose with goblet in hand and looked the powerful woman in the eye, keeping her words steady for Tessa had sway indeed across the Shackles and there was no reason to make an enemy of her from poorly chosen words.

"I am curious. You ask us to pursue the rumours of an invasion plot by Cheliax and bring any evidence to you. Also, that we should kill or capture any spies we uncover in the process. Would this not then draw the attention of the leader and signal that we are onto them? It would certainly undermine our anonymity and our mission, for all eyes will be pointed on us - targets for every Chelish supporter/ally and any would-be personal enemy. Where did you first learn of this plot and do you trust these sources for you said the rumours came from various parties? I would know their names, please, as a show of good faith between us and to aid in any further inquiry." Rain wanted a name or names -- a starting point. Rain smiled at Tessa - the Half-Elf may hold legitimate power but Rain would not submit simply on her say so. There was much to consider and the Freebooter was not certain she wanted to be at the beck and call of any lord ... the Mistress of Quent, even for her popularity, must also have her enemies. She had built a reputation for herself and many up and coming pirate captains and lords would be eager to take her down and claim her power for their own.

Horatio pours himself another glass of wine and takes a slow, steady drink as he watches her.

Two things where clear and the first is that the majority of their company was ready to show some level of support the cause of this woman, though it seemed that the specific level of support would depend on information that was still forthcoming.

The second point was that while most were eager to help, they all seemed agreed that before they were prepared to offer more specific aid that they would first need more specific information from the woman.

As he listens to Variel he then gives Rain a glance and listens to her questions and approves of her probe for more direct information on what it is they could do.

For now he keeps his own specific questions to himself; hoping that she will give them all the answers they seek – and more – as soon as she has a chance to respond.

Yet, of course, in the back of his mind was the recollection of that strange swordsman who aided them in their plight at the tavern. While no one elected to follow that man, Horatio wondered suddenly if this captain may have known anything about him.

After all, she was too well informed to not have her own spies in the city watching them; and if that man was not working with her, then who was he really working with?

Horatio shakes his head as if to clear it, though, and says nothing.

For now he sits quietly and picks absently at a crust of hot bread on his plate and simply waits for her to answer the questions.

Adular has been quiet for the most part, the redheaded beauty who is their hostess reminds him on Sandara, and Sandara is very much on his mind of late. He's dressed in a colorful silk jacket done up in brass buttons, underneath a fine ruffled shirt, and of course, he has high leather boots. Fancy Pirate clothes

On prominent display is the symbol of Besmara, bold as you like.

At mention of a possible tie to Cheliax, he raises a brow, "mmm, had a feeling about the colors of black and red earlier.... nothing to go on, but all this makes me think my nose weren't far off."

The others, at least some, explain where they stand, Adular grins, "Me own loyalties are to Besmara, and the lady of the wild waves has no love of those what would have the very seas chained by those devil kissers. That said, I too value some freedom. Captain Variel and his crew have earned my loyalty and affection. I'm not ready to be scrapping knee to anyone no matter how fine a dinner. "

Tessa smiles at Seijiro and then Horatio when they voice their agreement. Turning to Variel and Rain she says You speak wisely in this. You seem to have four questions that you are laboring under. The first, what sort of benefit can I provide to entice you to sally forth on this task? To this question I say that you will have the backing of a Pirate on the council and one that will entertain ideas for improvement that you bring forth. In addition, I can give you safe passage and free docking at Quent. No ship flying my colors will attack or harass you. Finally, I am willing to pay you five thousand pieces of gold to do this. The second question, was what sort of onus will I put upon you? The answer to this question is simple. Should I call the fleet to arms against either a foreign threat or one more local, you will answer that call. The third question was if I had heard the name Shanxia? You say you are not informed of the current political climate and yet you bring up the one name that I have heard whispered in dark corners and is definitely related to the rumors of the Chelish invasion. When I hear rumor of one, I typically will hear the other mentioned. Who they are I cannot say. Four, Rain you wish to know my sources? That I cannot tell you for that is there secret to tell, not mine. As for becoming targets, that may be true but I am hopeful that by the time their spy network finds out that we are aware of them, we will have the evidence needed to mount a defense. That said I do have several leads upon which you can begin your search. I can think of only two places that might have some knowledge of these traitorous informers in our midst. The first is the House of Stolen Kisses in Quent, a temple of Calistria and one of the best information brokerages in the Shackles. Use this note to obtain an audience with the temple’s high priestess, Dindreann.

The second is the Temple of the Hidden Name, a secret temple of Norgorber said to operate in the town of Beachcomber on Bag Island. If anyone knows of these spies, it would be the followers of the Reaper of Reputation. I have no contacts with the priests of that temple, so I hope you can convince them to reveal what they know.

When Adular mentions scraping knee, Tessa looks annoyed for the first time. Have I given you the impression that I am the type of person that requires submission and the bending of knees in order to form a working relationship. Leadership is about respect and courage, not forced displays of obeisance. Softening she says My apologies Adular. The way you spoke is how Bonefist rules his people, not I.

Turning back to the group she says Have I sufficiently answered your questions? Are you willing to take on this important task?

Dhaavan glances at Horatio, Didn't you have a few folk lookin' to head into Bag Island to drop off a few passengers? he asks with a whisper.

Listening, he raises an eyebrow at the offer of coin, Hmmm, seems to me that as it stands, there's not necessarily the need to make our association public. Rather we get what information we can before we come out as associates of your's, Cap'n Fairwind. And the resources we have to offer will be of significant assistance in our endeavors. Your requests do seem to play to our own goals, and even I have my concerns about the Chellish actions and what they may herald.

We're still little fish, and the patronage of one of the Pirate Lords would be valuable. And the woman does seem tractable enough, and not having to pay tribute is a deal we wouldn't see from many others. What worries me is wether this action has something to do with the portents we face.

Actually, one small question, as you are quite well-informed... Does this image mean anything to you? It's something of note we've ran across, somewhat of a curiosity... Dhaavan asks, taking out a scrap of paper that has his the constellation he is branded with drawn on it.

Horatio continues to watch the interplay between Lady Tessa and the others as he leans in to speak with Dhaavan.

”Aye, I have not forgotten them,” he says to Dhaavan in a quiet voice.

As he listens to the others ask about particulars, and Dhaavan question her about the runes and cosmological patterns, he glances at the constellations on the paperwork for a moment, reflecting that Dhaavan had made his change on a night where there was no moon in the sky and wondered about that, too.

That he changed on a black night with no moon... Could that also be aligned to those star patterns, or just more coincidence?

After the lady has answered Dhaavan’s questions, Horatio speaks to her.

”Lady, earlier yesterday I took it upon myself to enter the Slave Pens that are permitted in this place to study them for information. Later I, and some companions, entered the pens; one companion left to Gather more Information while the other assisted me with my plan. In that act a family of Halflings was liberated and is currently hiding safely,” he says, intentionally not mentioning Rain, Dhaavan and Amen-set at this point, in case his words might have negative repercussions for them.

Indeed, if there is going to be any trouble for what he invited them to assist him with, then he will accept the full blame; he does not want his friends to be implicated in something which could have dangerous consequences, a lesson he learned well after speaking with the Pirate King.

”Of those Halflings four of them have begged to return to their home; two elderly sorts, a middle-aged lass, and her young daughter. I have pledged their safe conduct to their home of Bag Island, even if I am forced to take them myself, though I hope it shall not come to that.”

”If you have business for us in Bag Island I would be pleased to bring them to their home, or at least to return them to your estates at Quent, which might be a safe haven for a time before they can be ferried back without fear of injury or danger,” he adds.

He muses for a moment, considering the village of Beachcomber.

Knowledge Check on Beachcomber
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Knowledge Check on The Temple of the Hidden Name
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Here's hoping for some back-up information on those subjects. GM, as the seven from the slave pens came from Bag Island and Horatio spoke to them a lot, are there any hidden modifiers for these checks at this time?

He rubs his chin thoughtfully.

”Your pardon, m’Lady, but you mentioned a temple of Norgorber, that black god of assassins. Yet even as you mention him I am now forced to wonder if this item that Captain Nightstorm questioned about earlier, “Shanxia” – I wonder now if those who had that mark were somehow aligned,” he says with a bit of a frown, then shakes his head, recalling that she already made her knowledge of that group clear.

”For myself, I do not serve Besmarra, Calistra or even piracy or the sea; my goddess is Milani – and if you know her, you know that this quest suits me very well, that I promise you,” he says.

”You have asked if we are willing to take on this important task? I tell you truly, lady, I am eager to aid you in whatever way I can,” he adds, his eyes traveling over her for a moment.

Then he stands and gives her a gracious bow, and when he rises his gaze lingers long on her eyes.

Diplomacy Check to convince of her of my sincerity and also hoping she’s willing to aid with the Halflings. Also, given her beauty, her passion and the fact that she's interested in pretty much everything that Horatio is, he's definitely impressed by her for lots of reasons and can't help but stare at her

Tessa smiles at Adular and says Think no more of it.

When Dhaavan mentions making the relationship public she heartily agrees saying I'm glad you understand. We will keep our arrangement between us but should you need anything please let me know. At your drawing of the symbol she looks at it closely 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 It does seem familiar. I have not seen the symbol itself but something like it in a ruined temple in the Mwangi Expanse. The temple itself was destroyed in an unfortunate explosion. She kind of grins at this point and you get the impression she caused the explosion. That is a story for another time however. The main reason is that I remember seeing a symbol like this in one of the chambers. There was an altar with many bloodstains upon it, so many in fact that the stone was turned from the light gray of the temple to black. That is all I know unfortunately.

Shaking her head at the memory she turns when Horatio speaks and says I have no love of the slavers but they possess considerable influence in Port Peril and so doing, in the Shackles as a whole. I would be happy to have them at my estates in Quent for as long as is needed but I suspect they will want transport to Bag Island more than that which I can provide as well should you wish to go to Quent first. As for those of Shanxia and Norgorber, I cannot say but that would make sense if it were so.

So can I count upon you all?

She will wait until you have discussed and either assented or declined her request. I'd like for everyone to chime in and so would she.

Horatio glances at Dhaavan as information about that temple is revealed.

His own memory suddenly tacks back to a tale told to him by a Halfling from the River Kingdoms who spoke once of a dark temple with a Black Stone…

He shakes his head at this memory and realizes the woman is speaking to him.

”To either place suits me if it would aid you in this matter, so long as they shall be safe,” he says, then sits down again.

”As for the power of the slavers in Port Peril? Many things change in time; perhaps, one day, their influence here shall wane,” he adds with a casual voice.

”But whether we sail to Quent or Bag Island first, or some other place,” he says slowly ”well, I suppose we shall both see what is decided soon.”

”Yet if we are resolved to aid you, would you advise us to journey first to Bag Island, or to Quent?” he asks her thoughtfully.

Variel listened intently to Tessa as she answers the questions that Rain and himself posed to her. Even though he was not really expecting an answer to Shanxia he still held his breath slightly waiting. The answer was more than he realized as it seemed that should they agree to search out the possible threat from Cheliax they could also uncover more about Shanxia. The rest of the concussions that she agree to were minor by comparison and Variel was ready to agree to find out more about his heritage. The offer of a safe harbor is a valued commodity and greatly appreciated. Likewise the money granted would be a boon if we need to bribe anyone for information. Furthermore I do not see a problem in committing to a one time summons for aid and pending on the situation further joint ventures.

As for Shanxia, we have come across that name before but with nothing ever concrete. Rumors, assassinations, etc at the fringes of al information is all we have. Believe me when I say that we will keep searching for a solid connection to Shanxia.

Although indicating his acceptance of her conditions he has not agreed completely yet and looks to those that have not spoken on their thoughts on the matter.

"Whatever we formally agree to, I think it's wise we look into the leads she's provided," Adular says with a nod to his hostess, "While I'm not one for being tied down, speaking for myself, I've no objection to a quid pro quo if it not bring me against me goddess or aid Cheliax. I doubt it will. Course, if we get caught with our nose in others business, we're liable to get it cut off. There's a risk, but that's the way of the sea. Frankly, I'm for haggling a bit with our hostess, and at least asking her to throw in a dozen bottles of these fine wines." He grins good naturedly.

It seems we have an accord then. Time is of the essence so if possible I would set sail on the morrow for either Quent or Bag Island. If you go to Quent first, here is the note for Dindreann to give you any assistance she can. She is a good friend of mine and so should be able to help. If you go to Bag Island, seek out the Temple of the Hidden Name.

Tessa then unfurls several beautifully drawn, highly detailed nautical charts of the Shackles. These are Charts of the Fair Winds, and Tessa points out the locations of Quent and Beachcomber to the PCs on the charts. She gives the charts to the PCs, presenting them in an expertly crafted watertight case as the PCs depart.

Unless there is anything else, the dessert course is brought in and you chat amiably till the end of the meal where Tessa bids you fair well, although her fair well to Seijiro and Flynn are slightly longer and she gives them a quick kiss each on their way out.

It is near 10pm at this point. What are you guys planning to do?

As he notes the charts she gifted them with he studies them for a moment, glancing at Dhaavan.

"Could you make me a copy of those charts, if I paid you for the parts?" he asks Dhaavan thoughtfully.

After they finish desert and the pause at the doorway, he is somewhat surprised to see that she has moved to him.

Then he feels her lips on him, the warmth of her kiss shivering through his flesh like sunlight shimmering over the horizon; the heat banishing the darkness of cool waters and leaving only a rising fire in its wake.

After the others leave, he lingers with her.

To Tessa:

"The hour is still young, Lady," he says to her as his eyes hold hers for a moment.

"I have no duties on the ship at present. If you are willing, I desire to know you better," he says with a quiet voice.

For this response Horatio will happily deal with this on the Social Thread, if you'd like.

Until then, I guess we'll see what happens next :)

Rain's brow quirked and she chuckled softly as her silence had been seen by Tessa as an accord, since she had not verbalised her thoughts/decision along with the others.

"You have answered my questions sufficiently, lord captain, and you have my gratitude. It appears my companions have given their support one way or another. I shall give mine along with theirs." Rain smiled. She wondered what would happen if either party defaulted on their promises but she did not speak the thought aloud. Tessa Fairwind was an intriguing person and one to watch for other than her beauty.

She sat down and ate of the sweet course and patiently waited for a time to privately speak to the officers as to their next point of destination: Quent or Bag Island. She had an feeling that Flynn would choose the latter for his promise to the Halfling ex-slaves.

At the end of the meal, Rain watched Tessa give Jiro and Flynn a kiss each ... The woman was good, she had to give her that (at least).

He inhales her perfume as the door closes and smiles softly.

"Aye, indeed..." he says to himself, then heads back to the ship.

Not sure where the rest of the people are at this time, but my plans are to get my gear ready and to make sure that in the morning we're ready to ship.

When he sees Rain back at the ship he nods to her.

"Those charts seemed damn good, I reckon. I'm hoping that Dhaavan could make another copy of them; but if he can't, I'm going to find someone who can," he adds and takes out a smoke, pausing a moment to light it.

"Well, where do you reckon we'll sail next?" he asks her thoughtfully, leaning back and considering the night sky.

His eyes narrow suddenly as he glances around the deck.

"Gods damn... and when the hell are the rest of those basterds getting back from their shore leave," he mutters, then shakes his head and glances up to Rain.

"Hey by the way, those two Halfling brothers - Alton and Elton - they really appreciated you lending a hand back in the camps, by the way. The bigger one didn't say it, he doesn't talk very much, but the brothers told me he's also pretty happy to get out; not to mention the family, too," he adds.

"Meanwhile if my guess is correct and there's a cult on the loose looking for your husband then it stands to reason that the more we find out about the better; and what better place to start at than the place where a secret cult of assassins trains?"

"Anyhow, you know what I think generally; but for now I'm more interested to know what you think, now that things are squared away..." he asks her thoughtfully.

Seijiro swallows hard as lady Tessa approaches him and he half opens his mouth to bid her goodnight but nothing intelligible comes out. When she leans forward and kisses him, he blushes seconds before the blood drains from his face comepletely... he sighs softly then suddenly his eyes roll up and he faints dead away, crumpling to the floor in a heap.

Rain watched as Jiro fell to the floor in dead faint after Tessa's brief kiss. She put her goblet down on the table and went over to the kitsune to see if he was alright. She gently shook him and called his name twice until he roused, again. Whispering "You'll be fine. It must have been some kiss", Rain winked, stood and returned to the table to finish her dessert.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Rain returned to the ship, walking silently beside Variel and the others.

On the main deck, Flynn brought up Tessa's charts and having someone copy them for their own records. "They were very detailed."

Rain had drunk more than she intended of the fine wine on the table. She was not drunk, but she was a little light-headed and distracted.

Flynn wrote:

"Well, where do you reckon we'll sail next?" he asks her thoughtfully, leaning back and considering the night sky.

Rain ran a hand across her face and pushed some stray blue tendrils from her eyes. Her skin felt warm. She lifted her face upward, hoping to take advantage of the night breeze.

"It would make sense to go to Bag Island and deliver your Halflings home and scout out the Temple of the Hidden Name. However, I have a feeling the others may want to stop at Quent first. I will sail the ship to where I'm bid."

Flynn seemed irritated with those of the crew not yet returned from shore leave but she simply ignored it. When he spoke of the Halfling brothers, Rain softly chuckled at their almost similar, rhyming names. "Their names amuse me. It is good that they are out of that slave pit. No place for any creature."

At the mention of Variel as her 'husband', Rain looked directly at Flynn, "He is not my husband, yet. I am certain Variel will have opportunity to uncover the mysteries of Shanxia. If truth be told, I would like a break from assassins and their like. Yet, Shanxia is a burden that weighs heavily on Variel. As I said moments ago, I will sail to the agreed upon destination. I am certain we will hear the others' thoughts soon enough."

Rain grew silent then and just listened to the water lapping up against the hull of the ship and the screech of a lone gull flying overhead. She wondered where Neko had gotten to since the golden cat had not been permitted to attend the formal dinner with the Lord Captain, Tessa Fairwind. Rain's turquoise eyes had suddenly grown brighter even in the darkness - her emotions heightened for reasons of her own.

"Back at the alehouse, Captain Pierce Jerrell of the Salty Flagon was a most charming man. I wonder who he really is and why he aided us." Least he finds me beautiful, Rain momentarily, silently mused before shaking the thought away.

Horatio nods at this.

"Aye! For myself, I'd rather get the Halflings home first, as you said - but personally I think stopping at Quent first might be better. It's less than a day for from Motaku, by all accounts. Closer to a few hours from Quent, the way you sail her," he says with a friendly nod to her, complimenting her skill.

"Meantime, if things are going to get dodgy at Bag Island - and more than likely if there's temples with assassins and the like, then I'm willing to bet that getting some extra gear or maybe some details from this Lady Tessa's people first might be handy."

"She owns Quent and she gave us a piece to secure some help there. If we go to Quent first it'd be more helpful in the long run, though I'm figuring it will delay getting those lads home right away, more's the pity. But I'd rather hit dirt on their island prepared for action, rather than not," he adds as he takes another draw from the smoke.

"But I guess we'll figure all that together," he says as he blows a fine stream of smoke from his mouth, his eyes studying the stars above.

Rain Taneththir wrote:
"I will sail the ship to where I'm bid."

This comment brings a dark look to his face, and he waves his hand dismissively.

"Oh come on, Rain, he says with a scowl.

"You sail were you're bid if this was Royal Navy, maybe," he says with an irritated voice "but this isn't Royal Navy; this is The Shackles and we're Gentlemen of Fortune here, or Pirates, if you prefer. Pirates will vote on hard decisions, by all account from every Code on Piracy I've had the chance to read, because we've all got our own hearts and minds and such, and they don't always go along with what one person might order us to."

"Hell, you're Rain Bloody Taneththir; one of the best gods damned pilots I've ever had the privilege to sail with," he says emphatically, with nothing but admiration in his voice for her.

"Since we've sailed together it seems to me that you know your own mind and your own heart. If you want something, you do it, because damned if you're going to let formality or some policy stand in your way, eh?" he says with nod at her, his expression proud at her courage and passion.

"Take your lad Variel, eh? As of this day, our whole company has sailed together for a total of eighty-five days flat. Yet how many weeks ago has it been since you two got engaged?" he adds, somewhat rhetorically.

"Point is; you didn't wait a long time to become formally engaged based on some old custom or formality; you got it fixed as soon as your mind was made up, and why? Because you wanted something in life and you weren't the sort who waits around for formality, or custom, or that sort of hash."

"You got courage and you know your own mind and when your heart's settled on something, you go for it! Personally, I like that, hell; I like that a lot! And the way I see it, I'm not the only one of that opinion."

"Take that captain we met, eh? You can't deny she had her eye on you, and why not? I'd wager my last copper that maybe she saw a young version of her in you; a lass like herself that's got fire and spirit and courage and skill. Hell, I'm willing to bet that who and what you are was a hell of a lot more agreeable to her than a bunch of us lads - myself included - falling all over her like a bunch of Tom Fools," he says, a trifle embarrassed about his own enchantment with the captain.

He lets out a long sigh and shakes his head.

"I apologize for the rant and my attitude, but I figure my point still stands. Hell, Rain, this here's The Shackles and the way I see it, the horizon's open and our life course ain't set; except by what every man-jack of us desires from life."

"If you got something you want to do; a port you want to sail to; somewhere you want to explore, well then I say make it clear and piss on them that don't want to support you."

"Meantime, you supported me getting my thing done, so it goes without saying that I'll support you getting what you want to get done," he adds.

He clears this throat, a little embarrassed now by his long words.

"Anyhow, sorry for all that; I guess I just was curious to know where you'd like to go," he adds, his voice softer and his tone about the apology sincere.

"As for me it's helping make people free of masters and such, like the Halfling lads," he adds, changing the topic a bit.

Rain Taneththir wrote:
"Their names amuse me. It is good that they are out of that slave pit. No place for any creature."

He nods slowly, his eyes studying hers for a long a moment, pondering something.

It seemed like something else was on Rain's mind, at least in his reckoning...

"True enough," he says to her, in complete agreement about the Slave Pits.

Deciding to try another tact, he leans back a little, studying her gear.

"By the way, you looked damn good tonight," he says with a appreciative nod at her garb.

"If you don't mind me saying so, your husband's a lucky man," he adds with a friendly smile.

Horatio glances at her for a moment, watching her out of the corner of his eye, then nods.

"Aye, charming indeed; and he had a good eye. You saw how he came up to you direct to dance? That's a man who wanted to be with the best lady in the House and it didn't surprise me that he came to you," he says sincerely.

He pauses, not really sure what was on her mind, but he clears his throat and continues.

"But anyhow, I agree completely with you about wondering who he was."

"If I had my lass Amen-set with me, I'd have told her to send her bird to shadow that lad and find out where he ended up. If I wasn't training lads for the gun work today I'd have spent the afternoon following up on him myself, or at least sending some trusty lads aboard out into town to find out who he really was working with," he says as he takes another draw of his smoke, his eyes glancing at the men on watch, then glancing to the docks for a moment.

"Hey - here's a notion, if you're agreeable to it; we got that guy's name and the name of his ship, right? Well, it seems to me that we won't be sailing anywhere until the lads get back to our ship tomorrow, right?"

"That being the case, while we wait around for the mates to get back from their dice and drink and so on tomorrow, maybe we ought to go track the guy down? Find out where his ship is berthed and then try to meet with the guy and find out what kind of man he is?" he asks her.

"Like I said before; you helped me get a thing done, and I'm more than appreciative of that. If you want, tomorrow I'll help you find out more about this Captain, if you want to, while we wait for the lads to come back to the ship."

He glances at the moon, his ears perking up at the sound of the ship's bells.

"In fact, it sounds like it's only Five Bells now, or 10:30, if you prefer. That mean's that it's still pretty early and I doubt that lad's the sort who wastes the night sleeping."

"If you want, we can head out now and check him out this very night?"

"Do you want to do that?" he asks, genuinely interested in helping her in whatever plans she's got.

Just an fyi, depending upon the shore leave shift schedule, the next crew might be coming back at any moment and you can catch them before the next crew goes out.

Huzzah! If it was me, I'd order the shore leave canceled and have the lads stay aboard for the night and be ready to sail at dawn. Then I'd spend the next couple of hours aiding Rain in finding out more about this captain she mentioned before hitting the sack.

But that's just me.

Meantime, have all the lads been accounted for generally? I mean, we're not missing any NPC's due to unfortunate events during shore leave, are we?

Seijiro wakens without too much trouble after a few moments.. one word on his lips as Rain shakes him awake... he simply whispers "Tessa..." before fully coming to his senses...

His eyes flutter open and he looks around, surprised to find himself on the ground... "Whu... what happened?"

A brief few seconds later, he is gathering himself up and standing, blushing furiously in embarassment. He bows to Tessa Fairwind, the bow meant more to cover his flushed exterior and his humiliation... He slips out with the others...

He walks back to the ship in somehwat silence, but his thoughts are racing as he contemplates the most beautiful woman he's ever seen.

A night of revelations to be sure.

As for cancelling shore leaves, Seijiro suggests "Perhaps cancelling leaves isn't wise until everyone's had a chance for SOME leave... if we are truly in that much of a rush, shorten the leaves by a couple of hours per shift until everyone's had at least one shift of leave time. We've got a responsibility to our crew to see them content. 'Tisn't fair to let some go and not others if we aren't in dire straits like under attack."

Well, Horatio would stress that before he offers his own formal opinion on the subject he'd like to know how the shore leave has been doing so far.

After all; if everyone’s coming back to the ship safe and sound (Barroom Blitzes aside) then sure, he also sees no reason that the whole crew can’t enjoy themselves as promised.

But on the other hand, if some of the lads are overdue or haven’t returned at all; or other lads come back and tell us that they’ve been jumped or followed or something like that? Well, I think that would change things. After all, each day we’ve been here is one more day to get people’s attention; and maybe that’s the wrong attention from the wrong people, but who knows?

So as of now Horatio’s assuming we’ll leave when scheduled without it being an issue and is cool with that decision until/unless the GM tosses up a possible negative status of the men who’ve been returning. But to be fair, Horatio may be worrying about nothing.

Though as of now he's not worried too much about risks (again, until/unless we hear otherwise from the GM). After all, he's prepared to accompany Rain into the town right now to track down that guy Captain Jerrell who helped us earlier; heck, how dangerous could it be to wander a Pirate Town after dark ;)

Variel bows to Tessa as is only proper as they leave but no longer was he as taken by her grace. Instead his mind was filled with thoughts of Shanxia. Agreeing to the terms of the decision Variel has a final question for her before they depart for the evening. Are you opposed to magical communication should we find anything? I know from experience that Adular is capable of such a feat. Would there be a particular time that you would wish such communication delivered?

Upon obtaining her answer and the moneys granted to them Variel escorts Rain back the ship waiting to communicate withthe officers till they are back and in the privacy of their ship.

On the way though he gives Jiro a little ribbing. You seem quite stricken with Tessa. You might have some competition though as it seems Horatio there curries her favor as well. Fortune favors the bold.

Not sure but I think Rain and Horatio were talking amongst themselves? If not hten I can respond later.

On the topic of shore leave Variel agrees with Adular and Jiro. Once all have had a chance to have leave then we set sail. As to the destination that is a matter we need to discuss. I understand that Horatio would like ot go to Bag's End and can understand that. However we do not know mcu other than finding a way to infiltrate a den of assassins without any contacts. Perhaps Quent should be our first stop as it is more direct in its dealings. Also we might be able to find a lead there that could direct us better at Bag's End.

Right now I've met with Rain to catch up on things on the main deck; though formally I don't really know where everyone else. But as far as I know, it's not formally a private conversation - anyone's welcome to approach and offer their thoughts.

That being the case; Horatio would rather go to Bag End first, of course; but Quent is the second biggest town in The Shackles; and unlike Port Peril, it's people are likely to be a better sort, especially since we've got a formal letter of recommendation from it's Mistress.

So yeah; I'm totally on board with taking her letter of credit; her letter of recommendation; and then hitting Quent first as it looks like less than a day from Bag Island. Also, depending on what we learn in Quent may prompt us to to get more specific in what type of goods and gear we decide to bring.

Out of game I'm ready to sail ASAP (or at least fast-forward) because I figure that's where the next stop of adventure might be; but then again, if we get the chance to track down the Captain that helped us earlier before heading out, and if Rain still wants to do that, then I'm totally down with that, too :)

Only to Variel on walk back to ship after dinner:

Variel wrote:

As they walk back to the ship Variel leans in close whispering to her to keep the others from overhearing him. What do you think of Tessa? You seemed to hit it off fairly well. Horatio and Jiro both seem smitten by her. I would appreciate your honest opinion though. There is reason that she is held in high esteem. She made an offer that as new Free Pirates we could not refuse even if there was no connection to Shanxia.

Variel's whispered voice by her ear caught her by surprise for she had been caught up in her silent contemplations. I should not have had the third goblet of wine.

Rain replied with the same level of discretion, tempering her tongue lest the wine speak for her.

"A powerful ally, a powerful enemy. I am of mixed feelings. She uses her many ...charms to influence a situation to her advantage. I wonder if she's ever heard 'no' to any of her singular requests. My grandfather has some alliance with her or else why would he keep quiet about the summons ... I would write to him to discover more. She believes in her own words, I gleamed that, so there was no deliberate dishonesty in her revelations over dinner. I do not entirely trust her but it is wise not to trust such powerful people. But I am not blinded by lust at the sight of her. We should not be too quick to throw our lot in with her. We have her sanction as Mistress of Quent, for now, and that is a boon. But I wonder how she would react if we ever said no to one of her summons...."

Rain let the rest of her words (and the implication) very quietly trail off.

She liked Tessa on some level, but she felt a certain level of rivalry. Does my grandfather truly trust you or is he abiding by your wishes so as to not to incur your wrath? Was it rivalry, simple jealousy or suspicion which made her so distracted and conflicted...on the matter of Tessa Fairwind. I need a clear head. I need sleep.

To Flynn, back on ship, on the main deck.

Rain laughed upon Flynn's numerous words and praises. She was not laughing at him by any means, just that he had seemed to have read in part some of her thoughts and inner struggle.

"Aye, Variel is most fortunate to have me by his side. And aye, if I set my mind to task or desire, I push forward faster than some, but then I have been alive longer than most."

Remembering her manners, for the man had complimented her numerous times, she looked Flynn in the eye and smiled (an unreadable smile), "I thank you for your admiration of my beauty this night. It is good to have someone take note of it." Rain gave a brisk nod and grew quiet.

The clouds parted a little in the distance and the stars twinkled prettily.

"As to the gallant Captain Pierce Jerrell, I have a feeling we will meet up with him again, sooner rather than later. I have drunk more wine than was sensible over dinner. It is not wise to go seeking this man at this hour when my head is not clear and my reactions dulled. I should find my bed, shortly. My apologies. Horatio nods at her.

"Believe me, Pilot-Major, there's hardly a day that goes by when I don't take note of it," he says with a friendly laugh, but the laughter sounds a little forced for some reason, his expression somewhat uncomfortable.

Then, clearing his throat a little, he glances up at the stars for a while, too.

His next remark and uncomfortable expression gave her pause and she contemplated its meaning. The hour was certainly growing late and her presence of mind was not as sharp as she would have liked.

Rain simply inclined her head.

"Yet, if we are allied with another, under their particular protection, then we cannot simply chart our own course without thought to them and others. It is an interesting quandary, is it not..." Her voice was soft and solemn.

"I admire your loyalty, Flynn. You do not sway in the wind." She bid the man good night and wondered if her telling him she would find her bed soon made him feel dismissed. That had not been her intent. Rain shook her head and then stood by the rail a little while longer, looking out on ocean and night sky.

As his hand lays on the edge of his forelock her words give him pause and he seems to consider them.

"Well, I always stick by friends first; and I tend to honor deals I make with them that are true to me," he says slowly, his words sincere.

But he pauses a bit, studying her thoughtfully -

"But I figure that to some folk things like friends and deals and honor are all the stuff we think on are just... considerations."

He looks at the stars for a moment, then turns back to Rain.

"But in the end, not nobody or no one can tell us what it is that we will eventually end up doing, until they see us do it," he says, pausing in front of her, his eyes studying her thoughtfully.

He glances to the harbor, staring north toward the island that Harrigan's ship is moored at, then turns back to Rain.

"Aye," he says after a moment.

"Thanks for that, by the way."

"And yeah, for what it's worth, I never turn my back on my friends," he says with a sincere voice.

"Whatever you like captain, as has been said, me mother is of the Savored Sting, not sure if that'll buy me any favor at the temple when we do check it out, but it might."

Okay, the timing of this interaction/discussion is a little out of whack, I think. I'm hoping this conversation comes right after the one Rain and Flynn started having once they arrived back on the ship.. Is this alright with everyone? We've come together on the main deck and are talking things out before we retire for the night?

Not sure when exactly this would be said...

Aye, i agree that Quent would be a good place to start. Norberjer seems like a seedy sort of fella, and rather mysterious, and I'd expect his followers to emulate that. At least Calistrians are a known quantity and we have allies among them as well. Best head to Quent then to drop the halflings at Bag Island. dhaavan chimes in at some point

Seijiro, who's been pretty silent on the walk back and since, just listening to the conversations as much as I've been able to read, softly chimes in by saying, "It seems starting with Quent is wise, so I guess i'm in agreement. We can go to this Bag Island after, neh? It seems we have business in both places, so it's just a matter of order, not 'either, or'"

He looks down a moment and notices a stain on his jacket from where he had fallen earlier and futilely tries to brush it off... sighs... shakes his head...

After a moment he looks in surprise to Dhaavan and asks, "Drop halflings? What?"

Thanks Rain :)

Horatio heads off, but pauses to turn to Rain as he's leaving -

"As of now we still don't know what's going on with the lads ashore. I'm hoping we find that out when we get the reports when the lads get back. But I may not be here for those reports; but I'd still like to know their status," he says to her.

Yeah - still haven't heard from the GM on that subject; but I'm going out on a limb and just assume that the people who are on shore leave aren't in trouble.

He gives a whistle and calls for Amen-set, who's aloft in the Fighting Top. She leaps from the top and lands next to him.

"Your senet wanted to know about some dodger who helped us in a fight earlier, then skipped out."

"As it stands she's had a rough day and can't do this thing to find out more about who this guy is."

"So what's going to happen now is that you and me are going to head into town and find out who he is."

"We got his name, and the name of the ship; so that means we find a harbor master, constable or something like that and figure out where he's berthed."

"Then we get some straight answers for the Pilot-Major, because she wants to know, but she's not feeling her best," he adds.

Amen-set glances at the moon and then turns back to him and nods.

"To hear is to obey, hatey-a'," she says with a tone which suggests she is not overly pleased at this prospect, her eyes studying the others, then looking back at him.

"Fine, so grab your weapon and your kit and let's move," he says to her in a brisk voice.

Then takes another draw from his smoke and turns to Variel.

"Rain wanted this thing done. I'm not sure, but I figure it'll cheer her up," he says to him.

"You want to come into town with me and Amen-set while we go find this captain who helped us earlier and see what his deal is? It's barely 10:30 PM and I don't normally sack out this early. Plus, I figure it might be fun to get some dirt under your boots," he says to the Elf, then waits by the gangplank for an answer.

Hearing Jiro's question about the Halflings, Rain responded, "Dhaavan and I aided Flynn and Amen-set at the slave pits, today. We rescued a Halfling family, and, three have said they would stay on as part of the crew, but the others simply want to be returned to their home on Bag Island."

"Oh... okay... then I guess we have two reasons to visit this Bag Island place. " He sighs... glad to be told about the changes to the crew... but a little miffed that this is the first he'd heard of it... but that passes quickly... "I suppose though if this becomes a regular thing, perhaps we should carry a bit extra stores for more mouths to feed... I'm sure we're fine for this journey, but next time I'll make sure to procure a bit extra... Had I known we had a contingent of halflings, I would have bought some dried mushrooms for the trip, they like those, don't they?"

"Wait? What...?"

Amen-set jumping down from the fighting top caught Rain by surprise as she hadn't realised the girl was so close by.

"Finding out about Captain Pierce Jerrell can wait. I was curious as to why he fought alongside us at the alehouse is all. It was an intriguing meeting. Should you not remain here so we can all finalise plans for the morrow and then get some rest?"

The hour was late and they did not have many supporters in Port Peril. She did not like the idea of the two of them alone, seeking the Captain of the Salty Flagon.

"Nay, I will remain and sleep off this wine in due time. Be careful, if you both really do mean to go and do this."

Seijiro blushes at the mention of Captain Jerrell, the man who'd made such a blatant gesture of flirtation in his direction... looks out over the seaward side of the ship.

As Jiro spoke of extra stores with the new crew... Rain simply added, "Variel and Dhaavan too have brought on new sailors. You may need to do a head count come morning when shore leave will be done with. I know Flynn purchased his own gear and food for the three Halflings, but he should be able to tell you more about it than I. It was all rushed as we had the mission and then Tessa's dinner. I believe Flynn would have told you himself if had he had more time." Rain was attempting to stay any possible misunderstanding.

Rain noted the kitsune's flushed cheeks after she had mentioned Pierce's name to Flynn and Amen-set. Ah, yes, the dashing Captain made a play for him after Variel lay claim to me. It seems Jiro's been rather popular these past two days. Rain would not tease the kitsune -- it was good he seemed less sad these days.

"A head count and a quick accounting of stores is in order... I'm not tired, I can go over the stores and such tonight, consult with Fishguts and then do the head count in the morning after everyone is on board... I'm sure we have enough to get us to Quent, as it's not that far, right? But we might need to resupply when we get there."

He shrugs... "Flynn never does much talk to me, I don't think he likes me, nor does his flying lady." By his tone, he doesn't seem hurt by this, just accepting. "I wouldn't depend on him telling me things, so do keep me in the loop please, when such things come up, okay?"

"If I am in possession of such knowledge, certainly I will tell you, Jiro. I can speak to Flynn and ask him to keep you informed himself, if it will better?"

She could not speak on behalf of Flynn or Amen-set as to their feelings regarding Jiro. They occasionally had their quarrels, but she did not feel the doctor and his ward disliked Jiro. Rain wondered what the obstacle was between them ... and she hoped they could overcome the difficulty.

Attempting to turn the conversation to a lighter subject, Rain asked the kitsune before he left to take stock, "Did you enjoy the dinner party, Jiro?"

As Horatio and Amen-set wait patiently for Variel’s answer, he takes a long draw from his smoke and watches Rain’s conversation with Seijiro.

Amen-set gives him a quizzical look; confused at his expression, but she says nothing but waits.

As Horatio continues to watch the conversation between those two unfold and waits for Variel to decide what to do, he leans toward Amen-set and whispers something to her and she nods her head and runs off, dashing below.

After a few moments he takes another pull from his cheroot, noting that Rain seems to be doing much better then she had been during the conversation he had with her himself earlier and glances back to town, his eyes on the ramshackle houses and buildings that broach the darkness near the pier.

After a while Amen-set returns to Horatio and whispers to him quickly. He listens, his eyes neutral, his face impassive, then he nods once to her.

Amen-set glances away from Horatio toward the hatch. Her eyes start to quickly scan the decks, realizing that a whole new crew of sailors will soon be ready to all go heading off into the darkness of the night for another scheduled shore leave, and likely won’t be coming back for at least twenty-four hours, though she was still unclear as to how that schedule for shore-leave was divided or why the men simply couldn’t just be bought off with a few extra gold pieces and the promise of some real down time in a safer port, like Quent.

Before she has time to ponder this further, she hears Horatio clear his throat.

”Tell you what, Nightstorm, if you decide to come with me, then catch up, no worries,” he tells the Elf with a friendly voice.

His eyes stare past Variel and he seems to be studying something, but it is hard to gauge what he is looking at, given that his eyes are flat and expressionless, then he turns back to him and he smiles a little.

”Can’t say that I’m eager to do this thing alone, but I figure if we’re going to let a bunch of swabs meander the streets at night without fear for their safety, well – gods know I should be able to handle himself almost as well as they can,” he adds, giving Variel a quick wink.

”Anyhow; well, I guess I’ll see you when I see you,” he says, then tips his forelock and strides down the gangplank into the night.

Amen-set gives the officers a quick glance, bowing to Variel politely, and then gives Rain a quick wave and hurries after Horatio.

So it looks like Horatio will try to find out where this Captain is; and his ship; and try to gather some information on it. Meanwhile, Amen-set is going to come with him. Variel; if you’d like to come along, I’d not protest, and seeing that we’re letting out a whole other company of sailors onto the town at 10:30 or so then I’m guessing we have more than enough time to find a guy’s ship at the docks, and then ask some questions to the crew about the captain.

By the way, and this is a quick clarification question – who made the decision to tell sailors to leave/return to the ship at such a crazy time, as opposed to telling them they could have something like 24 hours and then maybe dusk until dawn? Basically I’m trying to understand the shore-leave schedule and I don’t really get it. If anyone knows the formal breakdown I’d appreciate it :)
