Then he stalks away and scowls, looking hard at her.

I'm hoping that this last action will encourage her to cozy up to Dhaavan further, but for now Horatio has moved away from her and keeping an eye on the new guy and the streets.

If it's possible to do the full interview in a safer place, though, I'm down with that. We're still on the street right in front of one of the most important bars out there and there was a big brawl inside. We might be okay, but then again...

Seeing that Rain and Jiro had thigns well in hand with Adular holding Caulky Variel turns to Pierce as they are still fighting amongst the riff-raff. I believe that the score is 3 points to you and none for me. Shall we continue delivering the Captain's judgement upon these souls or is it good enough that I call you the victor and leave? With the opening made by Pierce and everyone safe it seems that all make it outside safely. Clapping Pierce on the back variel thanks him profusely for the help. Thanks for the support back there. Wasn't sure what you were doing at first but once I felt the lightness on my feet I knew it had to be you. Thanks again.

Turning to Rain he sees that Horatio has just healed up her wound. My thanks doc but I am concerned still for Rain. We know already that she is not above using drugs. I would not be surprised should she have used a poison or drug on her blade. Can you check for such ailments?

Rain, are you feeling ok? No side effects from the wound she gave you? If you do then please let Horatio tend to you or Adular or let me take you some place to get checked out. Swearing out loud at the situation, something uncommon for Variel among the officers, as he vents his frustration he scowls over at Caulky and Dhaavan. Speaking loud enough to let everyone hear him but the speech is directed to Horatio, Don't worry Horatio, if I find that he blade was poisoned there will not be enough left of her for you to stick a knife into. I will strike her down faster than she will blink with lightning and burn her body to ash. Then I will find the strongest mead I can pour the ashes into and send it as a gift to Harrigan hoping he will choke on her remains.

2 bad cops and 1 good cop?

Caulky looks back and forth between you, first to Flynn in terror, then to Dhaavan, then back to Flynn, finally to Variel...before fainting.

Pierce looks over at Variel and says with a broad grin Happy to help! Been too long since I was in a proper brawl. For now though, I must away. I hope we will see each other again soon. His eyes stray to Seijiro as he says the last part.

Horatio continues to watch Pierce out of the corner of his eye and moves to Rain, escorting her somewhat away from Harrigan's colleague.

He speaks with a harsh voice and rapidly to Rain, gesturing angrily at the woman, his tone harsh.

In Elven:

It's clear by the words that the tone is just an act for the girl's benefit.

"Lady, I, too feared over the nuances of poison; yet my skills may not be able to do much about such things until its effects are manifested. Nevertheless I shall do my best."

"As I tend this wound further I ask that you would keep your eyes open, both on the streets around us and this Pierce fellow. He may be an ally as your betrothed suggests, yet it strikes me as too much of a coincidence that his presence at our table would have distracted our gaze from yon trollop's vile actions and his move to aid us occurred right after she was captured, so that all of us were taken outside right after she was."

"Further, if this lady was here to drug lads to be carried to her ship it is likely that she would need aid to move them. Such aid may be coming; perhaps we should move to a safer place?"

The scowl on his face is still there and his expression dark as he proceeds to examine Rain's wounds...

As the girl has fainted Horatio grunts at her slumped form.

He quickly pronounces Rain's condition and turns to study this Pierce fellow.

Well, I'm still waiting for that Sense Motive: 16 Check on the trustworthiness of this guy. Any chance of getting that information?

Horatio looks at the others as his eyes stare at the tavern and the streets intently, looking for threats.

Also still waiting on the results of that Perception Check: 22 for threats in the crowded streets.

After hearing Variel's praise and support he simply tips his hat to Pierce as the man prepares to leave them. Then he moves to unconscious form of Chaulky.

He takes a moment to search her body for any extra hidden weapons or gear.

Variel - magic healing stops the wound from oozing blood or bleeding altogether. There should be no visible wound on her flesh after I cast Cure Light wounds on her earlier; the damage is now internal, though I recognize that RP flair.

However, I will take care of this now.

As they walk Horatio continues to study the street.

"That's a popular tavern and I bet money that she's not acting alone. But even if she was, I'd wager that Harrigan's people will know we got her if a spy or one his people hasn't already passed the word along. They may try something during the night," he says as they continue to walk.

"Just a suggestion but maybe we can move the ship from the docks a few cables out and drop anchor. It'll be easier to spot a boarding party if they have to get to our ship on a longboat than simply slipping on from the docks," he adds with a casual voice as they make their way to the ship.

EDIT: A "Cable" is roughly 100 fathoms; but in the American Navy it's 720 feet. If we move our ship away from the docks we have a better chance of spotting a surprise attack in the night.

Variel/Rain: If the girl had a poisoned dagger than it's probable that she has the antidote to it, too. If she doesn't have the antidote than we can at least find out what poison it was (if it WAS poisoned) and then make a proper antidote on the ship.

But at this point Horatio has searched her body and taken her gear, so if she had an antidote he'd have it now.

"Well, if it helps, we've probably been followed since we got into town."

"That being the case, maybe we should hurry?" he says as he gives Dhaavan a wink.

The he adjusts the body more comfortably over his shoulder.

Outstanding! By the way, what did she have on her after her body was searched (not to mention the thug in the bar I knocked unconscious and searched)?

Also, at this rate how long will it take us to get back to the ship?

You didn't have time to search the guy in the bar. Otherwise you would have been fighting more people as remember the fight was still ongoing when you left.

On Caulky's unconscious body you find she is wearing studded leather, has 72 gp on her, has a masterwork dagger, and 4 doses of Oil of Taggit. Oil of Taggit causes unconsciousness for 1d3 hours when ingested, has an onset time of 10 minutes and is DC 15.[/dice]

Horatio takes the gear (minus the studded leather) and stuffs it into his satchel at this time. He'll deal with divvying it up later when they're back on the ship.

As he moves quickly through the streets to the ship he explains the nature of the poison to the others.

"It seems to me that bar fight broke out just in time if she was going to use the poison," he says.

"I've heard of a lot of places back east when an owner of a business will help with drugging folk for a piece of the action. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Harrigan's boys were paying the owner coin to take the unconscious lads out of the bar and dump them somewhere for a quick pick-up."

"That means it's likely that people in the bar saw what we did with the girl and will probably pass it on to others."

"I still think we should move the ship a bit from the docks for the night; but if not, we should at least make sure the deck watch keeps their eyes open real clear, just in case... but that's just a suggestion," he says as they move down the alleys.

GM - how much longer does it take us to get to the ship?

After they arrive at the ship Horatio takes the girl to the captain’s quarters and leaves her there for the others to question. Then he asks the deck watch how many of the crew are still out and carousing in town.

He advises that those on watch should keep their eyes open, but doesn’t elaborate on what particular threats may be out there; only recommending that folk are careful.

After he advises the crew he heads below and gets himself a proper meal and drink.

I don’t really have much else to do at this point; so I guess I’m going to remain below for a while until more develops.

As soon as Caulky had been subdued by Adular's Hold spell, Rain descended to the floor of the alehouse, her cat o'nine tail still in hand.

With talk of a poisoned blade, Rain shook her head, "Nay, I do not feel any such effect. Just got knicked by her knife, is all. Lucky for her that's all she did to me." Rain's eyes bored into Harrigan's girl.

With the other coming to deal with Caulky, Rain submitted to Flynn's healing and examination, for the doctor still seemed concerned she had been poisoned.

After Flynn's second heal, the knife cut seemed over completely and her arm was fine. "Thanks for the healing, Flynn. I should have known she had a concealed weapon. She fought like a trapped animal."

When Adular came to give her more healing, Rain lifted her hand to stay the good priest, "Conserve your spell, Adular, for I am healed whole by Flynn's magic. You have my gratitude for your effort, however." She smiled at the priest and assured Variel that she was alright -- that it had been only one knife wound and that she had seen worse in other fights.

With Flynn and Dhaavan working to befuddle the girl with fear and charm in tangent, Rain kept out of their way and the girl quickly fell in dead faint at Flynn's threats. Rain chuckled when she saw it. Well, least the technique worked well and swiftly.

They returned to the ship lest Harrigan's men came to aid Caulky and Flynn put her in the Captain's cabin.

She'd have a word later with Variel about finding a more suitable place to hold and interrogate prisoners, for she slept in that cabin and did not want it used for anything other than their sleeping chamber, meeting place or Variel's or Dhaavan's work station.

Flynn shouted to wake the girl from her faint.

Rain stepped up and shook the girl hard. "No time for sleeping!"

Caught up with the weekend posting and made one post hoping to cover enough of it. If I have missed anything pertinent, my apologies, but it's Monday and I'm at work.

"Stop your sobbing, now. This is not the place for tears." Rain does not use a threatening tone nor a pleasant one. It's a simple and straight forward instruction, hoping to shake the girl from whatever emotion or motive she has.

Relieved that Rain was alright and that the wound did not seem poisoned or drugged Variel relaxed as he considered options. They needed information from the girl that was obvious and the safest place to do so would be on their ship. Yet it seemed dangerous as well should Harrigan know where she was and could have any number of magical means of spying on her then thus them. As they approached the ship and Flynn made to deposit Caulky in the captain's quarters Variel interrupted, For this time I think it would be best if we moved her to some other location in the ship. I do not want Harrigan spying on us magically and seeing this place. Our charts and everything are out and I would prefer someplace more mundane. Perhaps down in the hold where the supplies are kept.

Variel also was interested in finding out what Caulky knew but as she fainted at his threat he decided to leave the sorceror to his work. Seein that Flynn and Rain had things to discuss he let them talk but not before giving her arma kiss where rate wound had been before. Then he went on deck to contemplate what the morning and the new day would bring. He wanted to finish his armor tomorrow before the meeting tomorrow night. Too much to do and not enough time fo do it. Sighing he looked for the new crew that he had found that day and instructed them as to the command structure aboard the Dread Lady and that they would be receiving training from Horatio as they would be the gun crew. When not training with Horatio then they would assume jobs like the rest of the sailors.

Horatio cocks his head and studies Variel.

"You really want to do an interrogation down in the hold?" he says.

"Alright..." he says with a sigh.

Then he grabs her body, carries it out of Variel's cabin, caries her down into the hull, pushes past the crew below decks; carries her to the aft of the ship, opens the door to the hold, carries her inside, dumps her body on the deck in the hold, then turns and leaves the others to do whatever it was that they planned on doing as he heads out.

She has been briefed somewhat of the girl’s status by Horatio; and knowing what the girl has done so far does not inspire her to have trust for the Cabin Girl. However, it is possible that this loathing may be misplaced…

Amen-set stares at the cowering girl before her with a cold, penetrating look.

"She speaks the truth," she says to Dhaavan, her eyes still on the girl.

"I do not know what thou would do with this one; yet my heart tells me that she would be judged as traitor to the dog called Harrigan if she returned to him now after she failed to accomplish that which he tasked her with."

She continues to study the girl for a moment longer.

"I have seen the charts of my hatey-a' during midday. Crescent Harbor is on the other side of the bay, flush against docks where the Pirate King makes his residence."

She then turns and looks at Dhaavan.

She is sincere in what she's saying and you detect no duplicity or deceit.

"You should have been paying more attention to what I was attacking you with. The cat will cause pain, but will not kill you. Putting knife to me is an invitation to kill you. I will accept your apology for Amen-set says you speak the truth and I trust her insight."

Thinking a moment, Rain spoke to the others, "We could put her to work on the Lady. As long as she no longer spies or kills for Harrigan." The last is said with a stern look at Caulky. "What are you good at it, girl? Where do your skills lie? You're decent with a knife, at least."

Let's turn her. ;)

Amen-set bows to Rain and turns back to the girl, fixing her with a cold gaze as she listens to Rain talk.

Amen-set glances between Rain to Dhaavan, then the girl, then back to Rain.

”You speak for me as well, senet. If she would stay she must earn her bread.”

Also, I agree with you from earlier; I’m totally down with her being “Converted” the Light Side :)

”Yet, if you will permit me? Perhaps she could prove even more helpful if she shares more information?” Amen-set says with a polite nod to Rain and then to Dhaavan, her brow furrowed as she thinks for a moment.

”This one has said that she has sailed with the dog Harrigan and that his ship is now across the harbor, yes? Very well; but if Harrigan were to be a threat to us then perhaps she could share more of how dangerous he may be?”

Amen-set glances back to the girl, then turns back to Rain again.

”For myself, I should like to know what type of ship does this Harrigan now sail? Her size and speed and class. Further, what type of weapons does it carry and how many men now sail with him?” she asks, glancing at the sobbing girl with suspicion.

”This knowledge may prove useful if her master is a threat to us, especially as his ship is so close.”

Her eyes light up suddenly and she gestures to Dhaavan and Rain, pulling them aside to make a suggestion so that the girl does not hear it.

So this “aside” is meant for pretty much everyone in the room except the girl – not sure who else is below at this time…

”If her duty was to fetch more sailors using this poison we might assume that Harrigan’s ship is understaffed, yes? This is indeed something she could confirm… But even so, his ship is only across the bay itself even now; less than half a league away, yes?” she says with an excited voice.

”Perhaps, as it seems he needs to recruit more men, and with the cover of darkness, a small company may leave our own vessel secretly and assail Harrigan’s ship this very night and cause him further harm for the injuries that he has heaped upon you?” she asks, looking around at the others; not sure if she’s overstepped her bounds, but certainly eager to offer any suggestions that might be useful.

Not sure about this plan at all; but it’s what Amen-set would have suggested.

She looks at Amen in confusion and says What do you mean? It's still the Wormwood as it was when you were upon it. As for how many men, I am not sure. I was not privy to the crew count. I do know that Harrigan has upgraded his weaponry on the ship with 6 cannons and outfitted several of his men with other sorts of firearms. He has one other but I'm not sure what it's called, it looks like a cannon but is angled upward. That's all I know I swear!

That's all she really knows. Just an FYI in the book it says, and I quote, "Caulky knows nothing of importance, except where the Wormwood is berthed." Also if I may suggest, DON'T GO AFTER HIM YET!

don't know if Seijiro is there for any of this... no one said anything about going to 'interview' caulky, but just for the sake of not being excluded by omission, I'm going to assume all were told this was going to happen and he is there...If that's not the case, ignore my post

"I doubt he's anywhere near undefended by trustworthies, so I don't think taking our lingering anger against him now is wise. It's over, we're free of him, unless he takes the fight to us, which he might now that we've announced our mutiny against him... " He pointed looks at Flynn, though his expression stays neutral. "Why not just let it go.. we dealt with Plugg and Scourge, I personally think that's enough, so unless Harrigan comes after us, just drop it.. we've had our revenge, and are free of him. Holding a grudge hurts us more than it hurts him. Let's move on and get on with some honest piracy... so to speak."

"As for the girl, she can probably be taught new ways and become an asset to our crew, once she learns that others will treat her better and she will learn to give and get respect. On the other hand, Harrigan and his officers know her well, and doesn't he have wizard or sorceress with him. She might be a scrying tool, if he even cares enough to spy on us. Dhaavan, can she be rendered neutral to such things?"

I know non-detection might help, but unless it can be made permanent, it would have to be cast more often that is practical

Amen-set folds her arms over her chest and stares at the girl with some contempt.

”A captain may con many ships in his life, not just one. Yet in any case, I never served on The Wormwood.”

”As for your master, for his actions against the officers of this ship I would rather see him nailed to a cross by sunrise; yet it is not my choice,” she says with flat voice.

Amen-set turns to look at Seijiro.

”Blood is blood,” she says to him, his words and tone confusing her, then she shrugs and turns to Dhaavan.

”Whatever else she is, she is not lying to you.”

”Thou art skilled at inspiring folk to new vocations. If anyone can make her useful then it seems clear that thy can,” she says to him and gives him a small smile.

Amen-set bows to the officers politely, her eyes lingering on Dhaavan for a moment then she exits the aft cargo area where the girl had been interviewed and leaves the others to go find Horatio and Rain.

Run-down during the day –

Horatio is going to spend the bulk of the next day on the ship with the new hires; specifically the “Gun Crew” who are skilled with cannon. He wants to know their names, their level of proficiency with Black Powder weapons, and their skill at using cannons.

Mostly, though, he’ll spend his day working with those lads.

Despite his enthusiasm for going into town and explore the day before, today Horatio will spend all of his time on the ship, trying to work with the new hires and make sure they’re able to handles themselves with the new weapons.

As Horatio works with the new “gun crew” there are three new Halflings who are now seen on deck with him, following him around as well. They’re all wearing leather armor and carrying hatchets and daggers and one of them seems rather large; as if one of his ancestors may have been human…

These three Halflings seem to spend the day shadowing Horatio and during his time on the ship they are currently dedicated to learning what he has to say and teach, specifically paying attention to fighting and sailing.

During the midday meal he will go below to eat with the Halflings; but when he returns to the main deck, they’re still with him.

Amen-set will camp out on the Fighting Top for most of the day, and spend the majority of her time up there reading through Horatio’s logbooks and study his charts and brush up on her navigation training. When she is not doing that she will spend time with some target practice, and generally keep an eye on the docks for any unexpected guests.

During the day when the lads are going through maneuvers, Horatio will spend some time using Knowledge: Local and Geography to find out the relative danger and threats in the shipping lanes between Port Peril, Motaku and “Bag Island”.

Knowledge Geography (with a +4 if the waters are close to Port Peril)
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13

Knowledge Local
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

EDIT: well, not as good as it could be; but if the waters are close to Port Peril Horatio's Geography check bumps to a 17. So there is that...

Also, whatever those checks reveal will be shared with the others after he learns their results.

Horatio, two of the halflings are trained on siege cannons having worked as powder monkeys on a ship before. The big one who doesn't talk much seems to follow the other twos lead and is quite strong for a halfling.

The halflings are two level 2 gunslingers with the siege weapon proficiency and one level 2 halfling barbarian. These are background characters that I will be controlling like the rest of the crew though.

The shipping lanes between Port Peril and Motaku and Bag Island are no better or worse than the majority of the shackles.

Caulky looks at you all and says Please don't make me go back. I will work well for you. Anything is better than being Harrigan's slave. I have gotten fairly skilled as a sailor and can help around the ship as you need.

Ok so assuming you let her stay (although probably putting her under one of the crew to keep an eye on) she won't cause you any trouble and will work for you all now.

Variel is fine with the idea of Caulky becoming a member of thier crew. In fact he supports the notion as if word gets out that Caulky prefers us over Harrigan that may help in recruitment. After a long restful night's sleep Variel wakes, cleanses himself with a prestidigiation, offers the same to Rain, and then breaks his fast with some fruit. Once that is accomplished then he prepares for the coming day clearing his mind and preparing anew. As the meeting isn't till that night Variel next spends the last 8 hours needed to finish his armor. With it fully enchanted now he feels a lot better at strange meetings after hours in the dark. It isn't perfect but it should go along way to helping prevent some of the harder hits he has taken in the past.

Will update spells later but not expecting anything too different than what he currently has.

So the time comes to make your way to Captain Fairwind's residence. Let me know what you're wearing to the dinner. You arrive at Tessa's townhouse right on time and a pair of sharply dressed retainers open the doors for you. The townhouse is beautifully appointed three story townhouse of beautiful golden wood. The interior is well appointed and tastefully decorated but also seems warm and welcoming. You see trophies from Tessa's many conquests throughout the home as you are brought to the top floor and into a gorgeous dining room with one full wall open to a stunning view of Port Peril and the bay beyond. Tessa herself is standing at the edge of the table with a radiant smile of welcome blooming as you enter.

Lord Captain Tessa Fairwind is a stunningly beautiful woman with hair of fiery red and eyes the color of sparkling emeralds. She wears a figure-hugging combination of fashionable finery and practical sailor’s clothes with a tricorne hat at a jaunty angle. Her fine features and delicately pointed ears accent her exquisite looks, and she moves with lithe fluidity and graceful efficiency evident in her every motion. She has the voluptuous look of a human married with the refined beauty of an elf...truly this woman is blessed with the best of both of her heritages.

She glides forward with the swaying walk of someone accustomed equally to a dance floor as well as a ship and nods respectfully to you all. Free Captains, be welcome to my home. Thank you so much for coming and meeting with me. If you would please sit, we have much to talk about.

She leads you all to the table which is set for exactly 7 including herself. A series of servants come and bring wine, water, varied chilled juices, and other exotic drinks for your refreshment as well as a light soup to start. It has a pleasantly spicy taste of tomatoes and is served cold. Tessa speaks up after a moment and says I want to congratulate you all on your fine performance in the trials that oaf Goldtooth set for you. You availed yourselves very well as I knew you would. What set your minds to come and try for a letter so soon after becoming pirates?

Sense Motive DC 45:

Seijiro is wearing his nicest silk jacket over his black pants and shirt, belted at the waist... His long red hair is pulled back into a partial pony-tail with the remainder hanging loose. He wears little jewellery - a single ring, a pair of earrings, both gold, one set with a ruby, the other plain and a heavy gold amulet on a chain around his neck.

When he sees Captain Fairwind, he can't help but stare, blushing and looking away if she looks his way... his eyes rising to look again when her gaze passes on. Those behind him have to give him a little shove forward as he's too stunned by her beauty to move at first...

Before the scheduled time of the dinner with Tessa Fairwind, Rain took a few moments to set her appearance right -- and freshen up, for the labours of the day had brought with it sweat, salt and grime.

After she had washed/wiped herself, Rain dabbed some of the perfume Variel had gifted her at her neck and wrist, placed the various pieces of jewellery on her person: the protection amulet Dhaavan had fashioned for her was tucked beneath her shirt and the ring of protection and the silver bracelet in plain sight. She left her hair long and free -- the soft, dark blue tendrils cascading down her back. She placed Besmara's Tricorne upon her head for she was a Free Captain meeting with another, more powerful Free Captain. She had dressed in her long, black jacket over a clean shirt and fine woollen skirt. She had polished her long boots until they gleamed. Rain had don the light mithral shirt beneath her clothing (over the top of her undergarments) -- for there was no need to be unprepared for a fight. The cat o'nine was at her hip, as well as her cutlass. She checked her reflection in the small looking glass on the desk.

To Variel, she quietly inquired, "Would bringing my magical pike to a dinner party be considered rude?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon entrance into Tess Fairwind's townhouse, Rain's eyes took in the general splendour of the surrounds as well as the beauty of the Half-Elven Mistress of Quent. I hope she does not make a play for Variel. I would have to challenge her then and mayhap lose my life...She would put up a hard fight. Rain mused silently.

She listened to Tessa's greeting, and in turn inclined her head, responding with a practised level of gentility,

"Good evening, Lord Captain. Thank you for your gracious invitation and hospitality."

As she sat down beside Variel at the table, Rain accepted a little of the wine and tasted the chilled, spicy soup. Tessa Fairwind's question caught her somewhat by surprise -- as it came as soon as they had sat down to begin their meal. She remained quiet (for the moment) to allow Variel, as Captain, time to answer the question. Rain smiled and bowed her head at Tessa's praise and then looked to Variel.

To Rain she says Oh you are most welcome and might I say you have absolutely beautiful hair. It is good to see a woman in a position of authority. So many of these pirates have such antiquated views on women. We're not all damsels in need of rescuing are we Rain?

Variel, don't look at Tessa! Message from your betrothed, Rain. ;)

Rain smiled at the woman's open admiration of her hair. But she was happier with Tessa's words regarding women in positions of authority and power.

"Thank you. My grandfather was of a mind that I was to be strong on my own account and not reliant on another for my livelihood, welfare or existence. Horatio considers what to wear and dress with as he plans this event out. Eventually he settles for his usual gear, with a few modest adjustments.

He still wears his armor, but now has a long cravat wrapped around his neck, a pendent pinned to it. He combs his long hair back and ties it into a neat queue and puts over his gear a long seaman’s coat.

He is armed as usual, of course, though he has left his satchel behind. His revolver at his right hip, his pepperbox at his left hip over the hilt of his rapier, and his third pistol is in a holster under his left arm. Though he has his seaman’s coat, it does little to hide his weapons.

He is not entirely sure, but for now he will assume that standing before an armed man won’t ruffle her overly much, if at all.

As the company has been brought to her home and he enters he looks around the dining room, suitably impressed. As they are brought to the table he bows to her graciously and then waits for her to sit and then sits down with her.

As he listens to her speak with the others he picks up a glass on the table and inhales the bouquet gently before taking a small sip.

He studies her thoughtfully as he enjoys the flavor.

”Thank you for your gracious hospitality, my Lady,” he says to her with a polite nod of his head.

”Your home, your food and your courtesy are only rivaled by the tales of your skill as a captain,” he adds, as he lifts his glass to her in salute.

”I must say that I am honored to be invited to your home, and this meal is exquisite. The soup – it is gazpacho, yes? Delicious,” he says sincerely, recalling a similar dish prepared by a tavern keeper in his homeland who had hailed from Ustalav.

"Indeed, you're an extraordinary woman with refined taste. I am very impressed with all of the lovely things you have shown us this night."

Then he leans back in his chair studying her.

”As for what prompted us to seek a letter? I cannot speak for any but myself; yet possessing that letter was the necessary course to follow when pursuing something greater than our current position."

"To me, when you wish to have something greater, something more grand, then you must do everything in your power to achieve that end; to taste what life has to offer to its fullest and to enjoy everything that the world has to offer."

”Don’t you agree?” he says, a somewhat coy smile on his lips as he looks into her eyes.

Tessa nods and raises her glass in agreement with Rain's toast. She gets kind of a sly look and says Yes your grandfather would raise you proper. He is a good one...one of the few in the Shackles who doesn't have to have it beat into him that a woman's worth is more than warmth in a bed. She does not seem one to say things idly so you suspect she dropped that bombshell that she knows your grandfather intentionally. Moving on before you can respond however, she turns to Flynn and says It is indeed gazpacho, you have a refined palate. As for living life to the fullest I heartily agree and will drink to that. She raises her glass again as the next course is brought in.

A steaming platter of roasted lamprey is brought in next, a delicacy of some renown throughout the Shackles. In addition an assortment of fruit and cheese is brought to go with the slices of lamprey.

Once that is set and the servants leave she says in a somewhat chagrined tone, I fear I have brought you here under false pretenses. It was I that sent the letter to bring you here and retrieve your letter of marque from Bonefist. I am sorry for the deception and Rain please forgive your grandfather for not telling you as I swore him to secrecy. I have a matter of some importance that I must discuss with you all. Like Rain, Variel takes the time to look his best and lets Rain adjust his outfit accordingly. there was only so much that Variel possessed though when it came to such finery and he told himself that the next morning he would have to rectify that situation. It does no good to be dealing with people of this stature if I do not at least look the part. I may not have the social upbringing as some but that is no reason not to dress as an equal.

As for the rest of his look Variel will be wearing his finally completed breastplate and his cutlass. both knives are strapped to his belt and his cloak is slung over a shoulder. Looking at Rain as he asks him about the Pike, I would leave it this time. It seems too large for a social event. I do like the perfume still. I am glad that you still find it pleasing.

At Tessa's mansion, what else would Variel call such an ostentatious building, Variel took notice of the conquests of the Pirate Lord. Clearly this was designed to impress and possibly even intimidate those who come to see her. While clearly outmatched Variel was still on guard and would be prepared for the worst if such things would come to pass. ?Rising up to the third level Variel was astounded by the sight of the city through the windows but also impressed with Tessa herself. Even though he was devoted to Rain and engaged to her there was something about Tessa that caused him to glance twice at her. Indeed she was graceful and smooth as silk when she walked. This just added an element of wariness to Variel. Still he needed to be polite and courteous even if cautious. Doffing his hat and bowing to Tessa Variel greets her,
A pleasure to meet you this find evening Lord Fairwind. Variel Nightstorm at your service.
As pleasantries are made and small talk ensues before the meal Variel lets Rain and Tessa talk of the empowerment of women and the antiquated notion of a woman's place. He remains silent on the matter not that he disagrees with them but rather does not want to interrupt what seems like a conversation between women.

sitting at the table for the meal Variel is slightly caught off guard at the question as to why they arrived to make they case to become free pirates. While Horatio answered well enough Variel also added his input. There are others reasons as well. One of those reasons came from Captain Pegsworthy. He gave us some valuable insight when we first set out on this course. He told us to spread our name and reputation. right now we are simply fresh meat and prey to everyone else. Only by making a name for ourselves and becoming Free Captains do we have a chance of improving our lot. He keeps the information about being summoned quiet even though it was quite possible Tessa knew already from the verbal sparring Variel had with Bonefist's messenger.

Variel ate lightly of the soup and lamprey and cheeses as he did not want to be overly full and his reaction suffer because of it. Stil the food was enjoyable and it was hard to pace himself. He was just cutting into a lamprey when Tessa dropped the news that she sent for them and Rain's grandfather knew about it. Variel set his knife and fork down as he studied Tessa closely. I am not one for politics as I am too new to this area to have a good understanding of the dealings here. However rumor has it that you are in high esteem among some of the Free Captains. Beyond that I would be willing to here what you have to say ont eh matter.

Dhaavan comes along in a brand new outfit. A well-fitted onyx black tunic made of a lustrous fabric complements his skin, giving him an even more statuesque aspect. Over the tunic he wears a jerkin made of obscenely soft black leather. The polished coral buttons unfastened to casually show off the fine gold embroidery that line red accents that run along the high collar and down his chest in an intricate pattern. His thick soled leather boots are well-made, soft yet sturdy, showing their value in function and quality rather than gaudy embellishments.

The hat is another story, but he couldn't resist... A wide brimmed affair with a red band and a small gold clip on the side from which an enormous red plumed feather extends with a few of various colors to go with it. It's just over the top enough to add some drama (and cover his head-wear). He's picked a few pieces of jewelry from their significant stores of plunder, a simple ring with a small red gem and a gold earring. The look goes to project less ostentatious air of wealth grounded in an eye for quality and refined taste. His cloak hangs over his left shoulder, emblem showing as is flares with each step he takes.

--------------------------------------------------------

Dhaavan allows himself an appreciative glance at the woman, taking in her beauty. He takes a low bow and doffs his hat, avoiding allowing his gaze to linger longer than would be polite. When he rises he has a slightly suppressed smirk on his lips, as he is about to share a small private joke. M'Lady Fairwind, it is an honor to simply meet you and to be invited to your home having been deemed intriguing goes far beyond that. If I may, I am Dhaavan Fellwind, as I know you are aware, he says by way of self introduction giving her one of his best smiles, a glint of humor playing in his eyes at their contrasting surnames, and extending his hand to take hers to kiss, as is gentlemanly custom.

Dhaavan's jaw drops and and eyebrows rise, with a bright smile at having been so flawlessly decieved. He raises his glass to the master, Oh, that was very well done m'lady. Flawlessly executed drinking to her fantastic joke.

As to Shackles politics, Cap'n's more than right. We've got little notion of where things stand. Powerful Captains such as yourself, or the Master of Gales, and, mayhaps, our old...associate... Barnabas Harrigan hold varying levels of sway one the seas here, and in some way pay homage to the Hurricane King. But that's more due to his personal power and his fleet than any sort of fealty to him as a liege-lord. Dhaavan says, trying to put as much knowledge out there as he can to get any inaccurate notions corrected.

It does stand to reason, then, that the whole situation would be more than a little precarious. We're pirates after-all, criminals to all other nations, unwelcome enemies to be hunted and executed if caught. The whole order of things relies on the undisputed power of one individual and maybe his strongest crewmen. Those beneath him in the pecking order are not his loyal servants but rather other individuals of great power and ambition, not all of would would be friendly toward each other. Daavan muses, taking a sip of his wine as well.

Would it be accurate to suggest that Kerdak Bonefist is the linchpin in the hierarchy? and going further to surmise that if something shifts, the whole thing risks flying apart in a veritable orgy of violence and death as any number of Captains and upstarts scramble to fill the power vacuum?

We have a Fairwind and a Fellwind. Ha!

Rain had noted Variel's particular attention on Tessa Fairwind. The lord captain was certainly a beauty and she understood her betrothed's fascination, yet it did not stop her from feeling suddenly restless.

She was distracted from the disquiet when the Mistress of Quent pronounced that she was acquainted with her grandfather. Her elder had not made any mention to his association with such a high ranking free captain. Then came the disclosure that Tessa was the one who had summoned them and Rain's own grandfather knew of it, but kept it from her upon Tessa's request. Something of great importance is going on here...What have we gotten ourselves involved in... Rain mused silently. "I will not hold it against him" was her quiet reply as to her grandfather's part in the deception.

Rain watched as Tessa poured herself some more wine and took a drink. The woman had apologised for her deception. Rain was not going to admonish her grandfather over keeping the secret -- yet, it would have been nice had they known what was going on prior to coming to Port Peril. No wonder her grandfather had been so eager to leave as soon as they had docked.

Tessa Fairwind wrote:
First, what do you all know of the current political situation in the Shackles?

Know. Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 (Not the greatest roll...)

Rain answered as simply and politely as possible, "It would be good to receive a first account of the political situation from someone in the immediate circle. I would like to know why we are here. Please enlighten us, Lord Captain."
