In the interest of moving the game along, I'm going to assume that what was discussed on the second recruitment thread and in the discussion has already happened.

Kiana, Tierney, Nik'o:
At last,
It hasn't been a pleasant journey--even after the cramped seavoyage ended with your arrival in Dvaarnava, and your rapid departure to a remote corner of Adar. You have finally reached the end of the stench-filled passage through the mountain, to arrive at an ancient city where the mysterious kalashtar Qara and her Xeph friend 'S' insisted that the fate of the world will be decided. According to Qara, this place hides a region where the boundary between Eberron and the underworld is weak, allowing the dead to return easily. It is also the last known location of the Tremble Tooth, an object capable of turning one's fears into reality.

The passage opens into an underground clearing--there is plenty of light to see, the source of which is not clear since you are underground. About 100 feet there are a dozen large, dome-shaped buildings in a rough circle around a sort of courtyard. To the left of them, a sharp cliff drops deeper into the mountain, where the rest of the city lies. The buildings are decorated with with carvings of battles between whispy, cloud-like creatures.
To the left of the buildings is a jagged, shimmering cliff, and the bottom of which is the bulk of the city. Beyond the cliff, 200 feet below, an illustrious palace dominates the center of the city, with jewel-covered walls and dozens of abandoned roads leading out. Surrounding it are hundreds of ornate huts, and an underground river flows through the city.

With a bang, the doors to one of the twelve buildings opens. A red-haired halfling darts out. She appears to be running directly towards the cliff, muttering an incantation under her breath.
Spellcraft, DC 17

Spoiler:
She is psionically manifesting a power giving her a view of somewhere hidden in the city, a Clairvoyant Sense.

Three other figures follow behind her, two of which are clearly Khorvairian.

Revion, Gedeon, Helac:
As if in response to Helac's calls, the woman begins muttering an incantation under her breath.
Spellcraft, DC 17
Spoiler:

Kashaana calmly steps down the stairs. In an accusatory tone, she asks
"What in Adar is going on here? What is the cause of her sudden rampage? Did you do this?"

No, Eroh. Some traditions might, as an aid to focus. There are also cerebromancers, who blend magic and psychic energies... but, no. This seems a simple clairsentience ability.

She seems... to be be using some sort of clairsentient psychic ability, Gedeon... at least, she has temporarily stopped running toward the cliff.

Turning back to the inside of the building and the woman on the stairs, Kind Kalashtar Kashaana. To the best of my knowledge... we only know that one ran from the building. We pursued at first to determine the noise, then to prevent her from going over the cliffs.

This was then the one you were trying to bring back?

The halfling's sudden appearance breaks Tierney's momentary reverie. Immediately, he focuses on the little woman's rush toward the cliff. Is she trying to take her own life? he wonders momentarily as he concentrates on her incantation in order to make sense of her actions.

Nik'o boarded the ship as Nikolai, a mien he's worked extensively on before passing for Falko for a few years. Nikolai appears as a tall man in his early twenties. Lean, muscular and fair, he carries himself in an unassuming and discreet way while, somewhere in his grey-black eyes, or perhaps in his stance, one can recognize a flash of defiance and pride. His skin is tan and shows the subtle signs of one who has traveled a lot. He keeps his skull free of hair, yet wears a black beard in the style of the young nobles of Sharn.

He wears a dark brown tunic of leather, cut at the shoulder to allow fluid movements, under which he wears an ample white shirts, worn to the neck, with a "cravate" of white silk. Over these is a fine dark cape sporting sinuous strands of silvergreen.

His accent is a composite of the one found in the Five Nations, with a hint of elvish, but clear Brelander roots.

Tierney and Kiana:
The voyage had been long and tiring for Nikolai, his splendid white silk now converted by sweat or worse to a myriad shades of tan...

He wipes the sweat off his brow as the tunnel opens. Finally! he thinks, but remains quiet, for a clearing could mean trouble.

Sticking like glue to spots of darkness, he makes his way near enough to observe the strange dwellings. The scenes of battle he sees don't rign any bells, but he wishes he could know what they were about. He's about to turn to ask the others, when the door opens. Startled, he watches in amazement as the halfling is about to fly or to die.

Nik'o and Kiana

Spoiler:

Tierney's skin is chalk-white and flaky while his hair is coal-black and often looks greasy. His pupils are black against gray sclera. Often, he wears a hat or hood with no regard for the temperature.

During the journey, Tierney spent much of his time on deck practicing sword maneuvers. In conversation he is awkward and prone to odd questions and sudden changes of subject. The overall impression he gives is that he has limited experience in social situations and is not sure how to carry himself.

Tierney, Nik'o:

Kiana has been b~&!$ing about the cave for several days now. She arrived as a shipwreck victim midway through your passage, fortunately the captain took her on and made her work off her half-passage.

She has solid white eyes, dark skin, and a pair of feathered black wings. (See picture in profile).

Kiana's wings are spread, ready to fly up and investigate the source of light when the halfling runs out of the building toward the cliff. She snorts. "Those things have no wings... fool..." Her wings pop down with a boom and her body hurtles into the air as she flies lazily toward the edge of the cliff the halfling is running toward. She doesn't seem to concerned about the halfling falling. Then again, she is a very swift flyer.

Everyone:

The halfling reaches the cliff, and cries out "I shall find you!"
She then makes a supernatural POP sound before falling.

spellcraft, 16:
She manifested Catfall, to survive the drop.

Nik'o:
Her attire and speech sound more than a hundred years old. She must be older than she looks, and hasn't been out in a long time.
Her cloths and speech seem Sarlonan-- maybe her ancestors came here from Talenta a long time ago.

Helac, Gedeon, Revion, perception 20:

Three other figures have emerged from a passage to your left, two Khorvairian humanoids and one winged impish creature The latter of which is referred to immediately after this spoiler

The halfling starts drifting to the ground, slowly (it will take her a full minute to reach the bottom of the cliff.)
Subsequently, Kiana flies out in plain sight of everyone (all six of you), over the cliff, towards the halfling. You have time to catch her if you want to try.

Helac, Gedeon, Revion:
"Indeed, that was unexpected," Kashaana comments. "I would have thought she would at least thank us for bringing her back. But then, I did not know her personally, only Deenya did."

Kiana does a loop and dives head first after the halfling. Then she slams her wings open in a booming sound that arrests her dive so that she falls down at the same rate as the halfling. "Greetings, red one. I am Kiana. Given that the city below is abandoned, and filled no doubt with monsters, perhaps you might want to return with me. My companions and I are sent to explore the city below. If you seek something in it, allies would be better than being alone, yes? After all, it may be infested with... humans." She thinks of the most disgusting thing they could find in the city. "Now, I can fly you back up, so we can talk and plan, rather than leaping head long into the abyss. But if you attack me when I attempt to do so, I will be forced to treat you as hostile. That would not be good for you, considering I can fly and you cannot. When the pair land safely on the top of the cliff, she stammers for a few more moments, before speaking.
"Thou art from Khorvaire, are thou not? I fled the continent when that terrible war broke out and devoured mine home. I came to a port on the lower coast of Sykarn, but by a cruel trick of the Mockery found that that wretched land was torn by a conflict just as bad! The Inspired, creatures from another world, possess tribal leaders and turn them against each other. And so I ran into these mountains, but surely the Traveler cursed my path, for I stumbled across a cult of shapeshifting snake people, who were determined to help their god to manifest in the world--a patron of tyrants. I fled and was slain by a kalashtar. He insisted that my death would hinder the snake people, I understood him not. And now I hath returned from Dolurrh by some unknown power. Great Balinor I know not even how long I hath been dead!

Tierney tries to take in what the halfling says but he finds the entire account very confusing. Why would someone kill her to foil evil forces? Raised from the dead? She seems genuinely distraught. I don't think she currently has enough mental focus to lie effectively, Eroh.

Helac, dressed in well made but dark, worn hide, stows his morningstar on his belt but keeps his dark, wooden shield at the ready on his left arm, then walks a little closer to the winged woman and the halfling. With his right raised in an open palm, hopefully peaceful, gesture he stops just short of normal speaking distance, slowly brings his right fist to his chest as a salute, then slowly returns it to it's previous open palm position.

Thinking to himself If the halfling's speech and clothing are archaic, why does Deenya not look older?

Nodding to the Kiana, he focuses on the halfling. Do you remember the human Deenya?... She is the one who gathered others and is responsible for the ritual that has brought you back. Judging from your attire and speech... you may have been absent the world for a while. He tries to keep his face politely neutral, but a burn scar on his right cheek somewhat ruins the effect.

Brief city description, revised.:

There are a dozen large, dome-shaped buildings in a rough circle around a sort of courtyard. Behind them, a sharp cliff drops deeper into the mountain, where the rest of the city lies. The buildings are decorated with with carvings of battles between whispy, cloud-like creatures. There are no easily audible sounds, and no sight of the fleeing yuan-ti.

Two of the twelve buildings in the circle are considerably larger than the others. If the one closest to you is the '6' on a clock, and the one furthest from you is the '12', then the largest two buildings are at 4 and 7.

The '4' building has an enourmous front door, big enough for a gargantuan creature to fit through. While there are no knobs on the door, there is a large, dark, crystal ball.

The '7' building is carved mostly of marble. It has no visible doors, but a big chunk of the roof is absent. You can't see what is inside it from here, though.

The building at '2' is a far smaller mud hut, barely large enough for one human-sized person to live in. It has a stone chimney which, naturally, appears empty at first glance.

We came out of number 4. So did the halfling.

It has also been mentioned previously that the twelve buildings are linked to different planes, the number 4 being linked to Dolurrh.

Kiana nods, and takes her hand off her bow. "Well, it did look as if you were being chased, and when someone throws themselves off a cliff, it's usually to avoid something, not to go to something." She tilts her head and looks at the rumbling building. "So, it sounds like that building is going to explode, and everyone's going into it. Sometimes I wonder at people's sanity. We should take cover. Tierney, Niko, I suggest we take cover, rather than rushing into the building that sounds set to go boom." She looks at the halfling. "Kiana. That's Tierney, and Niko. They're not as bad as they look."

Yep, the rumbling is obvious to all (initially it wasn't, but it is getting stronger.)

The rumbling clearly unnerves Tierney and he stands frozen in place. "What is going on?" he asks Helac. "Is this part of the manifest zone?"

From over his shoulder, Helac responds to Tierney's inquiry, while continuing toward and into the building. I am not sure. I'm going in to pull out four people... and possibly make them give us full truths as opposed to half.

An odd but familiar odor brings to mind a brief flash of a long-buried memory, then fades in less than a second as Helac is briefly slicked with a translucent, shimmering ectoplasm, seepage from the Astral Plane. The glistening substance evaporates after a few seconds. Standard action. Manifest 1 pp vigor. Shared with Psicrystal Eroh.

Eroh, eyes out. They fooled us before... but now they will probably turn disagreeable.

Kiana's words make sense. But, at the same time, Tierney wants to know who or what is powerful enough to shake the ground beneath their feet. It is an unfamiliar position he finds himself in, unsure whether to go forward toward the unknown or back away from it.

Nik'o eyes go wide as he watches Helac start towards the door. He pnders only for a moment, then flashes a smile at Tierneyand Kiana: "I have to see!" and hurries after Tierney.

Once inside, it is clear that the rumbling is coming from the room which used to be behind the dragonmarked door (before the door was broken off). Inside that room, a shimmering swarm of ghostly rats floats along the ground. And next to them, a large, wolf-like figure shimmers in and out of existence. Its eyes have a wild, fierce glow in them.

But behind those creatures, where the source of the rumbling is, lies a circular pit in the ground much like the one Helac, Gedeon, and Revion went down earlier. This hole is closing up just as you enter the building (hence the rumblings), and as it closes the rumblings die down.
At that point Halkelk runs down the stairs, looking frantic. "Gone!" he calls out, "Deenya just vanished! This isn't like her at all!"

Knowledge: Religion, Knowledge: The Planes, and Knowledge: Nature all reveal information about the creatures in the room, which I'll put in a separate post...

Knowledge (planes)
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Tierney stops abruptly when he sees the translucent pack. He wonders how wolves and rats are connected but his thoughts lead to no answers. With a flash, he draws his wakizashi and readies for carnage.

When the man runs down the stairs the magus shifts his gaze to him and assesses him to determine if he presents a greater threat than the ghostly beasts. Quickly, he decides that the spectral animals are the more dire opponents and returns his attention to them.

Knowledge (religion) 15:
This is a swarm of ghost rats--all of which died at the same time. They have the physical characteristics of incorporeal undead, but are mentally little different from a normal swarm of rats.

K: Religion 20:
The swarm may have slipped between the planes to haunt its killer. Or, it may have been brought here deliberately by a mage. Or both. Coming into contact with the creatures can sap the strength of the living, and is eventually fatal to those completely drained of strength.

Knowledge (nature) 14:
The wolfish creature is a Dire Wolverine. Normally, such a creature is just a larger, more aggressive wolf. This one is magically altered somehow, though.

K:Nature 19:
Dire wolverines (normal ones, anyways) can enter a rage much like humanoid barbarians. They are also highly skilled climbers.
Dire Wolverines are not normally aggressive towards humanoids unless provoked, but a magically altered one could be.

K: The Planes 15:
Both of these creatures may have come here on their own due to the weak boundary between Eberron and Dolurrh here. It also means they could have been brought here more easily by someone with summoning magic.
Swarms of ghosts like this one are common on Dolurrh.
The wolf appears to be only partially on this plane. It is probably a normal animal of its kind (or rather it was, while alive), but it is breaching the boundary between Dolurrh and the world of the living. While enough of it is present to be corporeal (it is solid), the fact that it is only partially here makes it weaker than normal. Also, since after dying the wolf became native to Dolurrh, it has some of the traits of outsiders.

Kiana shakes her head. "You should find a place for cover, I have to go watch the backs of my moronic companions and make sure I can tell their relatives that they died bravely but stupidly." She huffs, skipping forward a foot or so off the ground, only landing to enter the door behind her companions.

Seeing the ghostly apparitions, and racks her brain for information, but nothing comes to mind.

Helac, isn't that a psychoportive aperture like the one the Yuan-ti used to get here in the first place?

Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
Uhhmmm... maybe? I am a little focused... on the ghost animals. I am fairly sure I have not seen their like. Thank goodness Adharc is still outside, out of immediate harm's way.

And what does that... tell you, Halkelk? Helac asks with a dry inflection that could be interpreted numerous ways. However, he doesn't take his eyes from the writhing shapes beyond the door, knowing that may be the time when they choose to strike.

Nik'o remains near the door, crouching low, ready for the beasts to attack, but confused by the man's arrival and news that Deenya 'vanished'.

"I do not know," he responds. "Maybe she was attacked, but then I know not where her attacker came from. It does not seem like her to simply leave us here."

The wolf-like creature emits a low growl. It looks ready to pounce on the first person who comes near it.

"Where did they come from?" Tierney asks while pointing to the spectral carnivores with his sword.

secret roll:
1d20 ⇒ 3

Apparently taken aback by the spectral creatures, he responds "They look as if they are from Dolurrh. How they got here is beyond my knowledge."

The rumbling ceases entirely as the hole finishes closing.

Kiana snorts. "I see no reason to mess with the ghost animals, unless someone has a better reason. And the rumbling has stopped. Unless someone has a good reason to be in here, I would suggest we leave."

She seems to be talking to her companions more than the new people.

"Aye, the doorway would serve as a choke point, should the beasts attack us" Tierney responds as be backs out the doorway. All the while, he keeps his eyes on the animals.
