Vakase |
One more for overland.
Vakase spends part of the night meditating with her raven informing her of nearby deaths. In the morning she prepares herself for what lies ahead.

Rurik Irongut |
Did you want survival from all of us, or just someone to lead?
While Davin leads the group in the direction he feels will get them to the Kobold Warrens, Rurik basks in the wonder of Nature, his heart at peace with the sounds of woodland creatures and the wind in the leaves.
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Hack, familiar with traveling overland, fans out to assist the party in finding the kobold lair.

*Fwoom!*
"Wha-what?"
"Gopher."
"Could you not--"
*Fwoom!*
"Squirrel."
"Could you at least wait until we see an animal that is an actual threat??"
*Fwoom!*
"Raven. ... They could peck your eyes out!"
"It was robin."
"Whoops."
Davin Grey |
LOL...sooo terrifying!!
Davin moves back to where Kara is sniping the local fauna.
"Say sweets, maybe flaming everything you see is not a great idea. It can alert the bigger beasties that we are here and they might get the drop on you before you can fry them...plus it is upsetting Vakase!"
The warrior gives Vakase a wink as he says the last part.
Kara the Silvertongue |
The small halfling incinerates a particularly large beetle sitting on a big tree, then pauses, looking at her fingers as flame dances on them.
The normally vicarious girl stays quiet in thought, then says, "You're wrong. Anything that wants to notice us can hear us or smell us coming from half a mile away. You, *sniff* still smell like the onions you had with breakfast. A big'un might not come after us now since it has a ready-made buffet for it.
But I'll do it. I'll trade every fluffy bunny and hugable furry thing from here to the kobold village, if---," she looks up at Davin, her big adorable eyes set in a dead serious face.
"---if you promise to kill every last one of the kobolds. Big and small, cute and ugly, you honestly persecute every single reptile like it killed your mom.
A neutral trade, lives for lives.
What do you say?"
Rurik Irongut |
Ah cannot tell if yeh care so little fer the Kobolds, er so much fer the bunny's. Really, yeh should only burninate things that are actually attackin yeh, or pose a serious chance ta start attackin yeh. responds Rurik dryly, But yeh seem so keen on a neutral trade, what say yeh to not using yer spells on "every fluffy bunny and hugable furry thing from here to the kobold village" and I'll not use mah healing magics on everyone except you... A neutral trade, lives for a life you'd likely like ta keep.
Bending over to replant a small sapling displaced by their march, he adds, Sarenrae teaches swift justice towards the cruelties born in mortal minds, and Ah dunna think that is limited to cruelty to humanoids only.
Davin Grey |
Davin's face hardens and the smile flees from his lips.
"No. I will not agree to such an agreement, and I am truly shocked that you would even ask me. I thought we knew each other a little better after the trip down the tower, but I obviously was wrong."
With that said, he turns and marches to the front of the line, then past to an area about 3 or so yards ahead of the party, never looking back and his bow tightly held in his fist.
GM Niles |
Davin easily leads the party over land to where the Kobolds are thought to be. Its only about a quarter of a mile away and the trip is easy. Davin (and anyone who rolled better than 10 really) notices right away, that indeed the area is littered with kobold tracks.
The area is an old marble quarry that's since been abandoned. However, there's a small ledge that can be climbed down until you arrive near the base of the quarry, where the tracks lead a few hundred yards to a dark cave.
A fifty-foot-wide strip of shore stretches between the lake's edge and the forty-foot-high quarry wall. It's strewn with stony debris-the result of centuries of rockslides. Several larger boulders stand against the middle of the quarry wall.
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Hack draws his axe and progresses warily, looking at the cave entrance as they approach as well as the body of water.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Rurik Irongut |
Well, Ah guess that be the plan fer approachin... states Rurik as he hustles off after Kartoss, keeping the lithe elf about 20 feet in front of him.
Kara the Silvertongue |
"You're just like all the others..." Kara mumbles to her feet, having been thoroughly rebuked.
She shuffles along, 20 feet behind the group, all her effervescent effusiveness gone.
"I thought you loved me," she says to no one.
GM Niles |
Sorry it took me so long to get back to this!
Kartoss strides boldly forward with Rurik right on his heels and Kara trailing! Kartoss doesn't spot the hiding kobolds until its way too late! He hears a yip and then arrows come flying out of the cave!

Kartoss Le'Thial |
As Kartoss approaches, the kobolds inside begin opening fire with arrows. He manages to parry almost all of them, but one of them slices his arm as he moves to parry. He then begins shouting in their language.
"You should all run. The Demon of Fire in the body of a Halfling is coming. If you stay, you will die!"

Round 1, Rage 1/10 Rounds
Hack moves directly forward 25 feet and 5 feet to the left behind the middle of three rocks just behind and to the left of Kartoss.
Kara the Silvertongue |
Kara, still smarting from her double smack-down, feels no fire burn within her.
"Wait, wait. We haven't even tried to talk to them," Kara calls out form the back of the group. "How do we know they're even shooting at us? I mean maybe they're just misunderstood? Maybe we're intruding on their sacred lands? I'm, how did you put it, truly shocked that you're trying to kill these people.
I mean, those guys are huggable too.
In the clinical, technical sense, I mean.
I don't know what you people want anymore...."
Rurik Irongut |
Lass, if they do any damage ta our group, ye have free reign ta unleash all tha fire in yer soul upon them. We had hoped bein kind ta their kin might have earned us a bit'o respite from this, we was wrong. says Rurik, somewhat down over the loss of life soon to happen, but it was their own actions that brought it upon them. brandishing his holy symbol, he asks Sarenrae to assist in cleansing those that oppose the will of her servant.
Sacred flame, DC 13: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Kara the Silvertongue |
"Wait, so we can't attack them until they've all harmed us? Or we have to wait until each of them have harmed us? Or do we have to keep track?
Now, it seems easier, at least to me, that we kill them all, like, right away. But you all put the ka-bosh on that, so we're gonna need some rules here.
Um, I -think- that one did some harm? Or was it that one? Or...or the other one.
Are you sure the one you just burned is that one that did the harm? Or do we just have to prove intent first?
Your rules are very complicated."

Round 1

Davin fires his bow and a kobold drops to the ground
Hack moves forward!

You can probably go ahead and bot Vakase for right now. TPJ isn't...really posting much nowadays. :((
"See! It's like they're not even trying to hurt us! Maybe this is just their way of saying hello?
But yet you're trying to kill them. Hmmmm, okay, even if something isn't "technically" hurting us, your actions are saying that it's okay to murder them in the face. Alright, okay, it seems kinda confusing, but I think I'm getting it now."

Round 2
Rurik calls down more flames! 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 and the previously scorched Kobold is even more scorched...and falls to the ground on fire.
Kartoss smacks a Kobold into next week.
Kara mouths off to Davin
Vakase hangs out because these kobolds arent "really" a threat.
Davin sends an arrow streaking into a kobold, dropping it.
Hack chops a poor kobold into two pieces...
Kobold... the only one left turns an RUNS! into the cave.
Combat...nominally over.
XP awarded 150/6= 25XP each
The cavern entrance is dark and foreboding.
Kara the Silvertongue |
"I am NOT mouthing off, I'm just clarifying!" Kara yells at the sky for some reason.
"Oh hellz to the YEAH there, Rurik," Kara chirps gleefully as the kobold drops to the ground, the flames feeding off it's skin and filling the air with the rich, ripe sent of lizard-on-a-stick. "Hold a tick," she says as she gets out some marshmallows and starts roasting them over the burning kobold.
"What? He's already dead and I didn't even kill him. Oh, you probably want to investigate the cave and light more 'boldies on fire, well alright." She puts reluctantly puts her marshmallows away and gets ready to follow the group, her step having returned some of its lightness.
GM Niles |
I didn't use dark and foreboding as a metaphor...it's "literally" pitch black past about 30' into the cave mouth
Hack and Kartoss move into the cave, and find that they cannot see much after the cave bends after about about 30'

Ughh. I updated you guys from home last night. I see the post didn't take.

Rurik Irongut |
So mechanically, is there a way for me to save Kartoss? He goes first of the PC's, so he could die before we can react, and Hack moved into the only space in the tunnel adjacent to him. Could Rurik cast Cure and then reach between Hack's legs to tag Kartoss' foot or something? I'd be fine if that provoked, but would prefer a course of action that is safest.
GM Niles |
You can move into an ally's square and out of that square (although the movement out does indeed provoke an AoO. Spellcasting does not). Also, Kartoss can technically "Hold" his action until the end of the round... allowing you to heal him. (Healing Word is awesome for this sort of thing)
