Opening / closing doors

Rules Discussion

This is a minor thing, but in any game, do you have to be directly in front of the door to open/close it? I've always let players open/and or close door by being on a diagonal from it and DMs have done the same to me, as in their NPCs have done it. However just recently I played on foundry tabletop and it said, "token not within arms reach." I placed my token 1 square diagonally from the door instead of 1 square in front of the door, it tell me no. Not sure if this is a foundry thing or an official ruling.

That is not official. Not as far as I know.

I don't think there are rules for opening a door other than that it is an Interact action. And an interact action only heavily implies that the thing you are interacting with has to be within your reach. All it actually says is that you use your hands to do it with.

And a 5 foot diagonal is within your character's reach for Unarmed Strike with your hands, so I don't know why a door wouldn't be.

Sounds like it may be a module issue as I do not think this is default behavior.

I believe the range of Interact is handled under chapter 8, Page 426: Range and Reach.

Quote:
Reach is how far you can physically reach with your body or a weapon. Melee Strikes rely on reach. Your reach is typically 5 feet, but weapons with the reach trait can extend this.

I would simply rule that you can interact with anything within your reach.

I find it's easy, intuitive, and agreeable to most people.

Opening a door at a diagonal would be fine, though interacting with something around a hard corner that filled up an entire space would not.

For example, in the top left quadrant, PC 1 can easily open the door. PC 2 can also open the door, as it is within his reach. Both are screwed upon doing so, however.

I just recently found this out. I tried to do it in abomination vaults, not a single door would open, it would give me the message, token not within arms reach.

It won't let me do it in Wardens of Wildwood either, and that one doesn't have very many doors. If the token wasn't directly in front of it, it won't let me open or close. Something tells me this is a foundry thing. Maybe someone else who is playing Pathfinder 1e or 2e games on foundry can try that.
Just recently I had a DM open/close doors on me with his NPCs on a diagonal in a play by post game. But also recently foundry told me no when I tried to do the same thing so I wouldn't be directly in front of a door if an enemy was there and this was on every door. The DM is very knowledgeable of the rules and I never questioned it until foundry vetoed it.

I do GM in foundry and after trying things out I can pretty much say for sure that this is not default behavior. This behavior comes from a module called "Arms Reach". It is currently listing distance calculations for diagonals as an ongoing issue and its not seen an update in the last 5 months.
