I cast Dimension Door, and it says "you can’t take any other actions until your next turn."
The bad guy gets a turn, runs past my threatened area. I have a sword, I want to AOO. I can't because Dim Door say "no actions" until my turn comes back up. However, I've seen some say "AOO is no action at all, like a 5 foot step" but I've not seen that in the rules. I would assume it's a free action or a special attack action that doesn't need an immediate action to use it. But what do you all think? And is there rule text one way or the other?

Dim Door:C4 ... After using this spell, you can't take any other actions until your next turn. a well known drawback for the caster. Notice that it does not restrict creatures the caster brings with him.
Read Action in Combat which explains Not an Action and 5-foot step falls under No Action in the chart, since you cannot take any actions you don't get the 5-foot step (as it is part of another action).

With your other post, you seem to be learning the tactics of the game. I'm curious as to how you cast a spell and have a sword in hand? Magus? It is also curious that you do not mention other players, so it seems a solo adventure. I'd advise buyng a heavy war horse or some guard dogs or combat trained pets to help and distract foes. In the above your horse could have kicked your foe.
My advice is to not to Dim Door INTO combat without mirror image or blink or good defenses. I know players want to run in and kill stuff, but it is often better to spot a foe, use stealth, cast some buffs and let them come to you or attack with stealth for surprise(vanish, invisibility etc).

so a slight change in wording is what you get in the CRB as it's a rewrite with a change of tense from the PHB in 3.5. It wasn't until several years later they started to use some technical writing. So the pedantic rule readers are often frustrated but RAW, FAQs, PFS documents, designer comments are all we have from Paizo staff.
Realize that Paizo had different corporate product lines, only the Core RPG got a thorough checking, then APs & campaign stuff, and PPC was contracted out with little oversight (thus the most problematic). It is a Work of Art rather than a technical manual so you can't take it too literally.Mysterious Stranger |
The term action in Pathfinder refers to things your character normally does during your turn. The only exception is an immediate action which can be done at any time. Actions are classified by how much time they take to perform. Looking at the chart in the Core Rule Book I do not see AoO being listed under any classification including Free actions, immediate actions or Not an Action.
The rules for AoO in the section on combat also do not list them as being any type of action. That would indicate that AoO are not in fact actions as defined by the rules. That being said I would suggest checking with your GM because it seems reasonable that if you cannot speak (free action), you should not be able to attack someone moving past you.
