So in the Monster Core is it a typo that they are Medium sized and no longer small?

No. There was even a comment from the devs I believe that that's exactly how they are supposed to be. In kind of a dwarves' position. If I haven't dreamt this up.
And this definitely has been discussed here recently somewhere.
