Adventure Paths map modules.

Community Use

Hello.

I'm currently working on a map module for Foundry VTT where I want to include every map for the Age of Ashes adventure path (remade in Dungeondraft by me), plus a few new ones that I made for it based on the descriptions of the adventure path.

As I understand, and based on people who have done so in the past on this forum, remaking and releasing maps from adventure paths is allowed.

My question is about including things in the map that are described in the adventure path books. Not the descriptions of the different rooms or any of the text from the books, as I see that as intellectual property of Paizo and the writing is basically the adventure path itself. I'm talking about including item piles that can be found in said maps as treasure, as described in the adventure path. Like creating an item pile that has two healing potions in room Z9 when it is described as treasure in said room.

I don't plan on charging anything for this module.

Thank you.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I think the reason game cartographers don't usually include items in treasure piles is because they want the map to be usable in multiple situations--whether in the AP it was designed for or just for GMs to use for a similar location in another adventure. They also want the GMs to feel free to alter treasure if the supplied list doesn't suit the party. Doesn't help the GM if the GM decides they want to give the party a magic hammer because there's a hammer user in the party who needs an upgrade, but the map image depicts a sword.

If it's useful to you, I see no reason why you couldn't add specific treasure piles to self-made maps based on Paizo maps that you do not plan to publish or sell outside of personal use on Foundry--the last qualifier of course being not because the maps contain items, but that the maps are copies of another artist's work, even if you've changed specific details.

Well, I'm making a module specifically for maps from the Age of Ashes adventure path. Versatility is not something I'd worry about when most people would use the maps to play the adventure path they were made for.

I do plan on making the module available for the public, so that's why I'm asking if that would infringe any copyright.

Outside of sharing with players for the purpose of gameplay, I personally would not share and certainly not distribute any map based on another artist's work. (And I say this as someone who redraws AP and module maps all the time for use in my games.)

One made from scratch, albeit with the adventure path in mind, may be fine under certain uses and with open game licensing in mind, but I would directly email someone at Paizo with the question rather than post on the board.

This has been asked before, and they're unlikely to answer for legal reasons. Basically if you're not charging money for it, you're fine as Paizo looks the other way, but they cannot explicitly say it is ok as strictly speaking it is not. But if you're not making money off of it, then no one cares. See the numerous AP Community Created Content threads on these forums remaining active for years as a reference.
