Combat Patrol and Combat reflex?

Rules Questions

If a pc has both feats and has a BAB of 5 his threatened squares up to 10ft away (two squares in every direction).

If an NPC was engaged but decides to move away to another area 30ft out, would combat patrol and reflexes allow for the first AOO as the npc moves away,
then another as the npc moves out of the first 5ft square,
then another as the NEW threatened squares are ANOTHER ten ft out....and so on until the combat reflexes number of AOO are exhausted?

So a PC with +4 dex mod would be ablle to follow in the NPC's wake until 5 AOO are made?

Nope:

Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat, you can add your Dexterity bonus to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn’t count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.

So then it would only apply when surrounded, or in the midst of a multi person battle?

Thank you

The same action can provoke AoO from different opponents threatening the one acting, but normally only once for each person.

Thank you

Let's say your opponents are Anton, Bob, and Charlie:
  • If Anton runs around you in a circle this round, he will only provoke one AoO from you (and one from each of your allies that also threatens one or more of the squares Anton exited and has an unspent AoO).
  • If Anton gets thirsty from all the running around and decides to drink the potion he has in his hand, this will provoke another Attack of Opportunity from anyone who both threatens his square and has an unused AoO.
  • If Bob decides to also run around you, he will provoke Attacks of Opportunity just like Anton did (one per threatening PC who has an unused AoO remaining)
  • If Charlie decides to load his crossbow within your reach, he likewise triggers Attacks of Opportunity (one per threatening PC who has an unused AoO remaining)
  • If Charlie then decides to actually shoot his crossbow, he again triggers Attacks of Opportunity (one per threatening PC who has an unused AoO remaining).
Combat Reflexes can be useful against a single opponent, but more typically shines when you are facing multiple foes and you get to strike at each of them when they close in...

Six spear-wielding (3 short, 3 long) paired opportunist builds walk into a bar and stand 5ft from the exit.

There are situations, like a crossbow user reloading and shooting, or casting a spell with a ranged attack roll, and some builds can forcibly provoke seperate AoO triggers (e.g. a trip build with Greater Trip and Vicious Stomp).

But generally yes, you will very rarely make multiple AoOs against the same opponent in a round. So what? Not every feat is intended to be good in every single situation, and you almost always fight multiple enemies anyway (as the balance gets really wonky otherwise).
