Thorne & Tumbler

As you may or may not know we just lost another player.

If you are still interested I am re-posting the revised version of the questions so we can get you approved and into the Lounge where there are drinks and the rest of the crew to help with the points part of char-gen.

Questions:

a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.

b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.

c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.

d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?

e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth?

f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.

g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V'sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V'sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population?

h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you?

i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating.

j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.

k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr. Destroyer (Think Marvel's Dr. Doom). What do you think about this? Are you a willing member? Blackmailed? Given the choice of joining or being sold out to the V'sori to provide a distraction? Maybe you were part of a cell that was destroyed? How did your meeting Dr. Destruction go?

See what you think of this. I'm thinking that someone realized what was coming and somehow opened something up in Alex that connected him to the Universal Mind, the consciousness of all of humanity ever.

Maybe he was intended to be a backup copy, or a library/repository. He isn't aware of what is going on or how he got this way.

a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character. Alex Carter was an un-exceptional person. Still is, mostly, except that his mind is filled with the memories and experiences of every human ever.

b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these. Have them all.

c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster. Alex is one hard to pin down. He is about 5’ 10”, 180 lbs, fit but not too fit, hair brown, eyes brown or hazel. He wore a dominoes delivery driver uniform for a while. Now mostly just a shirt and pants.

d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy? Alex can do anything anyone has ever done, and usually pretty well. Ride horses, shoot guns, invent calculus, paint, fix a pizza oven. He can’ t always control what he is good at, though.

e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth? Alex is a hero in the sense that he will usually help people in trouble, and a bad guy in that he doesn’t give a crap about the law or corporations. He does alright in this new world. He didn’t even know he had abilities at the time of the ceremony.

f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.

I know the basics, but have never been able to stick with it long enough to really get it.

g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V'sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V'sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population? Alex started experiencing what he eventually realized were special abilities a few days before the ceremony. He initially remained free by being completely uninteresting. Once he started using his abilities to help people and keep himself out of trouble, the V’sori took notice, but Dr. Destroyer found him first.

h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you? Alex has lived most of his life in Star City. His mother is still alive. She wishes he would amount to something. He brings her food and supplies when he can. He has only been a meta since right before the invasion as far as he knows.

i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating. Alex always had dreams of having super speed, which is ironic, because he really wasn’t doing that much. He would have just been a super speed slacker. He was saved from a car wreck by the speedster hero on Alpha Squadron while delivering a pizza. It was the best day of his life.

j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.
Alex just wants to be free and have other people be free. He hates bullies be they franchise managers, high school principals, or alien invaders. He’d love to sit on a beach with a Corona when these bastards have been kicked off his planet.

k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr.
Dr. Destroyer is super scary, in fact, most of these folks are pretty scary. But as long as we can keep most of the scary parts focused on the V’sori, that’s all good. Alex is a willing member. Dr. Destroyer probably understands Alex’s power better than Alex does, so it’s a good chance to learn what is going on. His meeting with Dr. Destruction was terrifying, and consisted of Alex protesting he didn’t have much to offer. Dr. Destruction had other ideas.

I should have the revised questions for the new concept in the morning. Have a family thing tonight and may not have time tonight...

..

Looks good. Head on in to the Lounge and start work on the points part of the character. I suggest building them as an SPC standard lvl 3 super and then adding 1 advance and the 5 superpower points from the Lair.

You might be treading into Karma's space as a dead folk focused super. Might consider that the dead are no longer part on the gestalt unconsciousness. No real mechanical difference just a theme issue.

In any case welcome to the game.

No worries. Plug away when you can. Feel free to ask questions.

Doctor Toxic is also a genius, but he is mostly focused on the science part of this. I will eventually go for Super-Science to make chemistry-based stuff. I don't have any problem with a general skill monkey.

Ok, I think I've got the questions answered. :)

Phillipe (aka Crystal Titan):

a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
Born with Brittle-Bone disease, Phillipe found a calling as a marine biologist. When his mother, a research physicist, discovered a crystal that when exposed to certain energies, strengthened what got exposed. It seemed to work, until one day he was caught in a bank robbery where he transformed into a large, living crystal form.

b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these. Have all of the above. :)

c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster. Some people might consider Phillipe a beanpole considering he stands over six feet tall but only weighs about 160 pounds. However, as Phillipe is usually sitting in a wheelchair his actual build tends to be overlooked. When he does have need to get around without the chair, he's walking with a cane. With light brown hair and blue eyes (because of his condition, the whites of his eyes are a bluish-grey as well), he's what most folks consider above average in looks. As a graduate student, he dresses in typical student fashion with jeans and t-shirts for the most part. His t-shirts tend to have some form of 'geek humor' on them, and his jeans tend to be dark colored with silver studs on the pockets.

In his crystal form, he appears much like a humanoid-shaped crystal. Because he hasn't had much experience in the form, the shape isn't very refined, so the shapes are very rough outlines of a person. As time passes and he gains experience with the form, the features will become more refined and detailed.

d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy? Because he spent so much time alone and reading while growing up, he has a very good grasp of a variety of theories around technology. He pick up tech fast, and given time could probably reverse-engineer the alien tech being used. His focus however is on Aquatic/Oceanic applications. In his crystal form, size, strength and damage resistance are primary.

e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth? Until recently, Phillipe had been in a wheelchair or walking with a cane, seeming too weak to be any threat. Phillipe's mother had been invited to the ceremony because of her political and scientific connections and they were supposed to go as a family, but at the last minute she cancelled. Phillipe himself had published some theories on the potential of deep-sea resources, but they were relatively unread except by the most die-hard theorists.

f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand. Fairly familiar. Read and observed the variations, gotten to play a little. Quickly became my favorite system even if I don't get to play. :)

g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V'sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V'sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population? His powers first manifested about six months after the invasion. From then to about three months ago he was living in the Bahamas. While there, he spent time in the middle of nowhere covertly (or so he thought) learning his powers and the lay of the land. It was only after he confided in his mother that the V'Sori paid attention to him and took him to Star City for interrogation and "research".

As his captors and he arrived in Star City, the transport was destroyed by some attack and all Phillipe remembers is being dragged away into a sewer.

h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you? Star City is Phillipe's new home. He's decided to completely cut ties with his mother (especially since she works for the V'sori) and make a go of it. He lived on the streets for about a week before he was able to find a place to stay for a while in Shouthpoint and scavenge parts to put together a basic computer system to hack with. (As a kid, and stuck in a wheelchair at home, he had done quite a bit of hacking and he was glad to know that those techniques hadn't been completely lost). It gave him a small income stream to keep the roof over his head and fed at least...

i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating. Even with the invasion, there's still crime on the streets and people not caring as long as they arean't affected or inconvienenced.

For about two months, Phillipe struggled. Twice he was mugged, once his loft was robbed, and he just took the harassment time and again. It was only when a group of Southpoint Slashers were "having fun" with a couple of lost teenagers that he couldn't stand it anymore. He quickly transformed and saved the teens, seeing them safely back to Uptown and their university housing. Since then, he's had several run-ins with the Slashers, the most recent being the prevention of a robbery of Michelinos, a small grocery/convenience store which many of the neighborhood used to get essentials, both legal and illegal.

j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you. Phillipe is tired of hiding in the shadows and cowering from what needs to be done. Freedom from the occupation is key. Free one city, then that inspires others and next two cities, then a county, then a state and a nation and finally a world free from the V'Sori.

k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr. Phillipe does see it as a Necessary evil. The Dr. is willing to do what needs doing, and as long as they remember that the V'Sori are the enemy and that humanity are all victims, then Phillipe (and Crystal Titan) are with them.

Thank you for bringing this up. It's good to have this out there to think about.

I was a little concerned about this overlap but the two of you are so thematically different that it did not seem critical.

Thorne/Titan

Do you have solid evidence that your mother is working with the V'sori?
Do you think se is working for them directly or through a quisling corp/Star City government?
Do you think she is working for them willingly?

No answers needed just things to thing about.

In any case head over to the Lounge (discussion page) and start in on the points part of your character.

Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate

Welcome to the game.

I apologize for my slow progress. Work is kicking my butt at the moment, and I just can't find time to get a build together. I'll keep working, but I understand if you want to move on without me.

{Exterior. Star City. Night}

{Muffled music fills the empty street in front of the Evil Lounge.}

The door opens spilling light, music, the sound of breaking glass and a scream into the night.

A slim figure emerges carrying a sandwich board.
They place the board in front of the open door and walk away down the street.

{Zoom to sandwich board}

In fresh red ink the board reads "Help Wanted."

{Fade to black.}
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As happens from time to time a couple of players have journeyed to that to undiscovered country, from whose bourn no traveler returns. Or at least found better ways to spend their free time.
Therefore I, your kindly GM, am reopening this recruitment thread for folks interested in a Savage Worlds Necessary Evil Game.
Game details: It is still early days (think early 1st book in Pathfinder AP terms) so you will not have missed out on much. If I may say so I feel the best part is just beginning.
So if you are interested then I kindly ask that you post your answers to the following questions. They are partly housekeeping, partly to give me an idea of you as a player, and partly to assist me in world building.
Very Important Note:
Evil, Not Psychotic
Necessary Evil is all about playing the villains of gold/silver age comics, as they smash headfirst into a very modern alien invasion. While these villains may be murderous and megalomaniacal, they don’t tend to be mindless killers without purpose. The super-villain you make up should at least have the potential for working with other super-villains. While playing a completely anti-social psychotic does have its charms, it does not usually make for good team game-play. Take some time to consider why your villain would cooperate with other villains, especially under the circumstances. Your villain could certainly murder his fellow compatriots at a later date to serve his own goals, but for the time being, he ought to realize he’s more powerful with others by his side.
But I want to be a hero!
Good for you! The game can easily support heroes as well. Just remember that you were not a very famous/effective hero. They are dead. Your backstory is yours but you must never have been seriously considered for membership in Alpha Squadron (the Avengers/JLA of this setting). The language in this thread is villain-centric but know that you heroes are welcome too.
Please answer the following questions.
a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.
c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.
d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?
e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth?
f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.
g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V'sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V'sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population?
h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you?
And finally a few words on character generation.
First a full character is NOT required to apply. Just the answers to the questions. That said I know folks will want the detailed info.
Most of what you are looking for in on the Campaign page of this game under the "Character generation guidelines, setting rules and advice" spoiler. But here is the quick version.
Standard SWADE creation rules. With More Skill Points, Born a Hero, and Larger Than Life setting rules in effect. Free SPC style AB Superpowers edge for everyone. See books & Campaign page for many more details.
Restrictions on origins:
No aliens. Atlanteans/Humans or Hybrids are fine. If you really want to play something from off world then make your case but it will not be easy.
No Robots. Cyborgs are fine. You may even think you are a robot but there is meat in there somewhere.
There is is. The door is open. The music is playing, and the dance floor is paved in good intentions. Welcome.
Dotting for interest :)
My gestating character is Dr Baxter Crawford III, a vaunted bio-medical scientist and former nemesis of one of the deceased heroes slaughtered by the V’sori. Their history was a familiar one, which saw the hero triumphing despite the odds or nefarious scheme set against him by his (or her) rogues gallery.
My villain (then named Redcap - based off the evil and murderous Scottish goblin of the same name) became obsessed with defeating their archenemy at all and any cost.
They explored alliances in villainous cabals, and pushed the boundaries of their own bio-medical knowledge in an attempt to fruitlessly gain an edge against their heroic nemesis.
Then at the eve of implementing their greatest gambit, the V'sori took it all away... Stealing any hope of theatrical final triumph for Redcap when they wiped out most of earth's heroes.
Something inside Baxter snapped as all his years of obsessive planning and focus was taken by these alien newcomers who knew nothing of ebb and flow of arch-rivalry and true antagonism.
Blinded by fury and outrage Recap enacted his final planned gambit - but would instead turn his murderous talents against those who dared to ruin his purpose and reason for being. Reborn as a malicious creature composed of nanotech infused blood: Hemogoblyn and a red reckoning against the V'sori and their allies, would be his...
Just some flavour of what I'm hoping to pitch. Need to look at the crunch and see what pops...
Essentially he's a cross between a Babau Demon, Norman Osbourne/Red Goblin with a Scottish accent :)
Will get the questions answered to provide some clarity and direction - but comments most welcome :)
I like what I see so far.
Might want to take a look at the Doc Toxic character in the game already. You might be treading some of the same ground background wise.
I think you can pull this off, I'm just noting a conceivable issue.
Duly noted - this is just what popped, so will have a look at Doc Toxic and weigh up where we can divert from what's already in-game.
I can see plenty of room, and I'm open to questions. Chemistry seems different enough from biotech/nanotech that I can see them feeling unique.
RL is stymieing any progress or thought process right now so I'll drop out. Appreciate the consideration.
Sad to hear but there is no rush. We will likely still be here when RL eases off a bit. Good luck.
Hmm the summer doldrums have hit with a vengeance. Or perhaps this game has gone to the well once too often.
In any case the band is playing, the red light spills into the street. Come in, the door is open and the neon in the window is for you.
Greetings, villains! Count me as interested.
Looking through the current characters, it looks like you guys could benefit from a wolverine-style scrapper, maybe? I'm going to look through some archetypes and see what inspiration strikes. If anyone has suggestions, I am open.
Glad to see you. The group has actually burned through two brawlers/scrappers already (don't ask). So feel free to toss another on the pile.
More important than that though are the questions in my big June 12 post above. Those will let me see if there are any background hooks/issues and give the other players an idea of what they have to work with.
Also this game makes use of the Campaign page for setting notes, the V-map, and other things like character creation and gear guidelines.
As far as suggestions, well we have no full Atlantians and Karma is alone in the occult/magic background. But those are just suggestions.
1 person marked this as a favorite.
a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
Jason, aka Afterthought, is the failed sidekick of a B-list hero. After a couple of years on the streets with his mentor, fighting the good fight, he was threatened by one too many psychopaths in clown makeup and hung up his tights.
His mentor didn’t survive long enough to stand up on the stage with Champion for the V’Sori betrayal: the old man died in one of the early battles against the Fins.
The day after his mentor died, Afterthought woke up to find a ring hovering above his bed. His mentor’s ring (and source of power) seemed to be calling Afterthought back to the life. To the fight. To the heroics.
Afterthought ignored that call. He kept the ring but hid it, keeping himself far from the fighting, until the V’Sori took Star City. Then, it became survival of the fittest, and he dug out the ring and did what he needed to stay alive.
b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.
Already got em. No problem here.
c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.
Afterthought is exceptionally ordinary. He stands about 5’ 10” at a buck 60. His eyes are brown and his hair is black.
When he is in costume, he wears black combat fatigues, like you could get at any army/navy surplus store. He wears what looks like a paintball mask when he fights. Think Netflix Daredevil in season 1 vs. when he gets the spiffy super suit.
d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?
Afterthought wears a magic ring that enhances his physical abilities. Speed, strength, toughness, the whole lot. He can also heal wounds that should kill normal people. And thanks to his time trying to make it in the big leagues, he's had some training, to boot.
e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth?
Make no mistake: Afterthought was trained as a hero, but he sees himself primarily as a survivor.
His most common crime is a protection scheme. In his territory, he collects from the local residents and shops and comes running when someone harasses his people. Of course, for those who don't pay, things can get a little dicey.
f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.
Very.
g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V’sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V’sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V’sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population?
Afterthought has been living in the shadows, stealing whatever he can whenever he can and generally using his training to stay below the radar. He was not captured by the V'sori, because they would not have known to care that he existed.
h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you?
Star City is home. Afterthought was active for a couple of years maybe 8 years or so ago, but got out of the game. He's only been back at it since after the V'sori takeover, probably only six to 8 months.
i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating.
In the aftermath of the V'sori occupation, Jason has befriended an orphan kid named Damian. Damian is a hard case, eager to fight and way too vocal about it, who squats wherever he can. On occasion, Damian has crashed on Jason's couch, and Jason knows better than to ask too many questions. He finds himself going out of his way to check in on the kid, who has fallen in with a rough crowd. Jason sees a lot of himself in Damian, except Damian is a lot angrier than Jason was at that age. Having your world occupied and your sense of self-realization taken away will do that to you though, Afterthought figures.
j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.
Afterthought just wants to get back to where he can hang up his costume again and go back to sleeping in on Saturdays and watching cartoons. He is not, at his heart, a complicated man.
k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr. Destroyer (Think Marvel’s Dr. Doom). What do you think about this? Are you a willing member? Blackmailed? Given the choice of joining or being sold out to the V’sori to provide a distraction? Maybe you were part of a cell that was destroyed? Have you met Dr. Destruction?
This is a continual head trip for Jason. Dr. Destruction is one of the scariest people in the world, and suddenly Afterthought is Destruction's errand boy. He has not personally met Dr. Destruction, and is not keen to. He got roped into the Omega movement because one of Dr. Destruction's goons started making a lot of trouble in Jason's territory and threatened to tip off the V'sori if Jason didn't decide to help.
a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
Jason, aka Afterthought, is the failed sidekick of a B-list hero. After a couple of years on the streets with his mentor, fighting the good fight, he was threatened by one too many psychopaths in clown makeup and hung up his tights.
His mentor didn’t survive long enough to stand up on the stage with Champion for the V’Sori betrayal: the old man died in one of the early battles against the Fins.
The day after his mentor died, Afterthought woke up to find a ring hovering above his bed. His mentor’s ring (and source of power) seemed to be calling Afterthought back to the life. To the fight. To the heroics.
Afterthought ignored that call. He kept the ring but hid it, keeping himself far from the fighting, until the V’Sori took Star City. Then, it became survival of the fittest, and he dug out the ring and did what he needed to stay alive.
b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.
Already got em. No problem here.
c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.
Afterthought is exceptionally ordinary. He stands about 5’ 10” at a buck 60. His eyes are brown and his hair is black.
When he is in costume, he wears black combat fatigues, like you could get at any army/navy surplus store. He wears what looks like a paintball mask when he fights. Think Netflix Daredevil in season 1 vs. when he gets the spiffy super suit.
d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?
Afterthought wears a magic ring that enhances his physical abilities. Speed, strength, toughness, the whole lot. He can also heal wounds that should kill normal...
I just want to respond THIS well ;)
Give me a moment please
What neighborhood is "your territory" in?
Evindyl, you still interested?
I am, just need to buy some books I think. I was also going to see if any of them were available in HeroLab.
Check out savaged.us for a Savage Worlds character builder.
Colorfoot, Evindyl.
Can either of you be ready for prime time (meaning full characters and questions answered in Evindl's case) in the next couple of days?
There is an EXCELENT drop in opportunity in the VERY immediate future.
Nice! Will there be room for both of us, GM?
Colorfoot wrote:
Likely only one but if you both put good candidates in I can be talked into two.
Colorfoot, Evindyl The easy entry window closes this weekend. Quick as you can please.
Any concept nudges? I was all excited to build a telekinetic, but then I read all the prior posts and that seems like it has been done. Although it might still be fun if we structured it correctly; like if he were expressing his TK as Flight in the beginning, was working on developing standard ranged TK, but also had a limitation/hindrance related to anger management which gave the GM control of his powers in stressful situations (kinda like a poltergeist).
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Well the TK artist we have is strongly focused on a TK ranged attack. Another character has basic level TK so there is some room in the TK field but not too much.
Other concepts? The group lacks a brick or a traditional Energy Projector. I would say they lack a speedster but they are VERY annoying in pbp. So maybe a teleporter? Or a stretcher, shrinker/giant, a Raven/Doc Strange type. A flying hand to hand type like Angel from the X-men. Anything you want to play really .
Two things to note. Very few additional Super Power Points will be available as your character moves up in rank so there will not be that much room to develop new powers.
As far as the gm assuming control thing that looks like Reckless or Power Negation hindrances in the SPC. Details and the value of these hindrances would of course be dependent on Exactly how frequently you want the loss of control to occur.
And remember I need the answers to the questions as well.
Poor Wandering GM wrote:
Roger that.
Here be Afterthought. His "biological" powers come from his training as a sidekick in his previous life. I attempted to answer the question: what would happen if one of the batfam somehow inherited a green lantern ring?
If the Flight power is too fast (too speedstery), let me know and I can drop it down a point or two.
Second verse, sort of like the first!
Afterthought (He/Him)
Novice Human
Attributes: Agility d8 (2), Smarts d6 (1), Spirit d8 (2), Strength d8 (2), Vigor d8 (2)
On Attributes:
I raised 2 attributes with Hindrance points and then raised 2 more with super powers.
Skills: Academics d4 (1), Athletics d8 (2), Common Knowledge d6 (1), Driving d4 (1), Fighting d8 (3), Focus d8 (3), Intimidation d4 (1), Language (English) d8 (0), Notice d6 (1) [+2 for Hearing], Persuasion d4 (0), Shooting d4 (1), Stealth d6 (1), Thievery d6 (2)
Skill Points:
17 total Skill points. 15 are from the More Skill Points setting rule and 2 are from Hindrance points.
Pace: 6; Parry: 6; Toughness: 12 (2)
Hindrances: Bad Luck, Dependent (minor), Transformation (minor), Secret Identity (minor), Heartless (minor)
Hindrances:
I used Hindrance points to raise 2 Attributes and gain 2 Skill points.
His secret identity isn't so much his civilian name; he doesn't care about that. His secret identity is that he used to be the sidekick of the Knight Owl, who some of his new compatriots may have tangled with back in the day. Maybe that's more Secret (minor) than Secret Identity? To be clear: I'm not trying to keep a secret from the other players at the table. My character is trying to keep the secret, not me.
His dependent is Damian, the NPC kid he connected with in the answers I gave to the setting questions. As far as stat blocks go, I don't suppose the new book has a thief or common criminal NPC?
I swapped Loyal for Transformation (minor). Much like Hal Jordan, Jason needs to activate his ring before it will work. And I gave him Heartless to round out the set.
~What does your Transformation look like?
~Damian would be an ordinary novice rank wild card character. More skill points, Larger than life, and Born a hero do not apply to them, and of course they have no superpowers. They could conceivably take an AB from the core book but you would need a VERY good backstory to get that to clear review.
~That is probably Secret (minor) rather than Secret Identity but the name doesn't matter. I am seeing this as the alter-ego you were using while with the Owl catching blow-back from some of the Owl's former enemies if it was revealed that you were their sidekick.
That said what was the code name for you as a side kick? I.e what name will make the former enemies angry/take notice?
What kind of costume did you wear back in the day and what happened to it?
How public were you? Give any interviews? Publicity? Feature in news reports?
Where were you and the Owl active? Starcity? New York? Cleveland? London?
The Owl was not a member of the Alpha Squadron, this setting's version of the Avengers/JLA, either by their choice or by the Squadron's and you were never seriously considered for separate membership that you knew of though if you were the Owl may well have spiked your candidacy. The Owl, in my head anyway is a hands on and rather paranoid iteration of Batman. While the Spider was the more distant and high tech version. The Spider was a member of the Squadron and is presumed dead
Powers.{Thank you for detailing power costs. It helps} Check.
~Question. What does your Damage Field look like and what does the damage look like? Bite marks? Pummeling/crushing? Burns? Poison? Etc.
~Device meta check. Because you are using the Device modifier you will be caught without your ring at some point. Possibly more than once. I am just making sure you are aware of this going in to avoid bad feelings later. You OK with this?
Gear. check. You get an Omega com-link for free once you join the organization so you can take back/re-spend that $100 if you want. If you do want to keep a separate com-link then we'll call it a present day high end smartphone. It cannot access the Omega network or V-map without someone cracking it open and doing some surgery. Your call either way, just let me know.
Overall. Good to go. You can post in the gameplay page after you see a post there that says Smash Cut!. You are free to hop into the Evil Lounge (discussion page) as of now.
Welcome to the game.
And yep, I'm totally okay losing the device at some point. Wouldn't be a fun hindrance otherwise. :)
Smash Cut is up. You are good to post in gameplay.
oh wait, I answered the questions first, sorry :(
QUESTIONS:
a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
WONDER BOY, the Vsori Nightmare. Jacen Hawke ‘reintegrated’ – in the aftermath of the energy weapons bombardment, Jacen emerged seemingly unscathed, suffused with ionic energy which also seemed to both replace and enhance his biology. If the human genome could do this once, it stands to reason it could do it again. And again. And again.
b) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of what your mug shot would look like.
Jacen is adorable, in the way that many young underwear models are adorable until they move to Los Angeles and become absorbed in their own looks. Thankfully, Jacen never made it out of Hartford. Dark blonde hair, deep blue eyes that lighten when he’s happy, and a tan that would make an Angeleno jealous. Standing 5’ 11” he is short for a model, perfect for a superhero, and his transformation eliminated the last Zero Point Nothing Percent of body fat that was bothering him. His mugshot looked like Magnum, NOT Blue Steel; he may never be Derek Zoolander, but he will forever maintain the same core values.
c) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?
It was hard, in the early years. He wasn’t all that cute, he wasn’t super, and he searched and searched and searched for a magic tea cozy … what didn’t take a lot of effort was being disintegrated. For a while. After he reintegrated, things were different. He’s stronger faster and healthier than almost everyone, even when he’s flying. Derek Zoolander couldn’t fly … Jacen is hard to hurt too. When he’s angry though, the energy manifests much much more directly. And hurts people. The right people.
d) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? That he didn’t “survive” Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. He was though. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing with Champion? He was though.
e) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? Most importantly tell me about your capture by the V’sori. Yes you have been captured, no this cannot be negotiated. I’m not entirely sure I understand the 2nd part of the question all that well. Mostly Jacen has been knocking over 7-11s around closing time, and killing isolated Vsori patrols when he is angry.
f) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating.
Ether helped him. Ether helped him a lot. The greatest part of knowing Ether, for Jacen, was flying together. They did so much more though. First off, Ether helped Jacen stay cohesive; when he was less cohesive, things happened, and they were usually pretty negative things when Jacen was angry. Secondly though, Ether helped create Jacen’s Wonder Boy identity, even found someone to fabricate a costume. Most importantly though, he helped him be Jacen again after his disappearance. Wonder Boy wasn’t really a villain until the captured Ether. He was pretty sure Ether was dead. He was pretty sure he would be killing aliens until he knew for sure. He might never know for sure …
g) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.
The greatest thing in life, with Ether gone, is dropping Vs & Fins from the sky. Turns out gravity is almost everyone’s enemy
Well hopefully his questions are okay and the team can use a semi-rich semi-cute semi-returnedfromthedead Flying Brick. He's based off Marvel's Wonder Man, of course, throwing in some Kori Andrs semi-kinda alien origin with some underwear modeling AND some anger issues a la both Raven AND Angel (after his wings were cut off).
Okay, I will likely post a little later today (I'm in AZ, so we're on MST, which currently aligns with PDT because we don't believe in daylight saving out here).
Just a note: "Afterthought" was already taken on the server, so my character name will now be "Discard" instead.
Is “Afterthought.” taken? I’ve had luck using punctuation marks to get the names I need. If not then Discard is fine.
Wonder boy
Looks like you answered an earilier iteration of the question list. No harm done. This thread has seen a lot of use.
The current questions are here:
a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.
b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.
c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.
d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?
e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth?
f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.
g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V'sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V'sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V'sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population?
h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you?
i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating.
j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.
k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr. Destroyer (Think Marvel's Dr. Doom). What do you think about this? Are you a willing member? Blackmailed? Given the choice of joining or being sold out to the V'sori to provide a distraction? Maybe you were part of a cell that was destroyed? Have you met Dr. Destruction?
And finally a few words on character generation.
First a full character is NOT required to apply. Just the answers to the questions. That said I know folks will want the detailed info.
Most of what you are looking for in on the Campaign page of this game under the "Character generation guidelines, setting rules and advice" spoiler. But here is the quick version.
Standard SWADE creation rules. With More Skill Points, Born a Hero, and Larger Than Life setting rules in effect. Free SPC style AB Superpowers edge for everyone. See books & Campaign page for many more details.
Restrictions on origins:
No aliens. Atlanteans/Humans or Hybrids are fine. If you really want to play something from off world then make your case but it will not be easy.
No Robots. Cyborgs are fine. You may even think you are a robot but there is meat in there somewhere.
One issue with your proposed background. If you were on that stage with Champion then you were a member of Alpha Squadron, a top flight independent, or a political player with at least Congress member levels of clout. Or you were a guest of someone who fit one of those criteria.
In any case you were seen by the V'sori as a major player. Someone worth removing with extreme prejudice.
Seeing you come back will cause the invaders to pay attention, read panic. This background means you basically have the Secret hindrance at the Major level that will collapse in to the major hindrance Wanted by the V'sori once your identity is known. This hindrance got a special comment on the campaign page. I have reprinted it below.
"Wanted by the V’sori means there is a unit in the V’sori bureaucracy dedicated to hunting you specifically 24/7. You have been warned.'
There is nothing stopping you from using this background. Eventually unless everyone just rolls over and dies you will all have the equivalent of this hindrance. But it would be hitting you harder and earlier than the other players. I just want you to be aware of the consequences if I am understanding your background correctly.
Jacen would have been a 'guest' for sure, of anyone who wanted to hang out with a 23 year old model (and could pay for it)
The Hindrance is 100% spot-on, so now I am trying to think if I should pair it with something like a VOW (to make sure that people know his story, and that the potential of humanity is limitless)
1 person marked this as a favorite.
How disruptive are you seeing this being?
I can assure you that several of the other players will happily sell you to the V'sori if you look to be bringing too much of a threat home. Your secret getting out will cause collateral damage.
I am leaning towards disallowing this background if combined with a desire to publicize your resurrection/existence. Dr. Destroyer would happily make use of you but not as a cell member. You would be an expendable distraction or a single-use weapon. You would not be allowed into the organization. You are too much of a risk.
Now without the desire to publicize and instead a desire to keep your secret. That could work.
If you see things otherwise please help to see this the way you are seeing it.
Upon reflection I think we might be having a tone/expectation issue. This happened with another player and caused issues that led them to drop.
Most supers stores are generally positive. Powerful heroes saving the world sort of thing. Even in villain stories the villain generally moves against forces not too far above their own power level. Or they have a gimmick or edge to level things. More importantly, even in villain stories the outlook is generally positive. The world is not destroyed. If the hero is killed there is a twist that returns things to the status-quo.
This is even more common in supers games. These are wonder power fantasies where players get to punch the baddies through walls, fly through the sun, and speed clean their suspiciously large centrally located apartment. These are great games, I play them, I love them.
Necessary Evil is NOT one of those games. It is quite possibly the darkest game background I have encountered. And I am including Wraith in this where an important character question is "what does the wound that killed you look like".
Necessary Evil is dark because humanity has lost. The V'sori are smarter than us, stronger than us and more numerous than us. They literally have multiple planets of resources to draw on. There is no rescue coming, there is no trick to level the field. We lost. Starcity is the LAST human city that you know is still standing. When your character enters play they are as doomed as Robin Hood. The characters in Necessary Evil are not fighting because they think they will win. They are fighting to survive. Some my fight out of anger, or greed, or fear or even the blind hope that there is a way to win even if we don't know what it is and may never know.
Now you as a player know that there is a path to victory the look of the book and the advertising blurbs would be much different if this was Blake's 7 the RPG and your doom was fixed. I as a GM can tell you that that path is long and it is winding and I fully expect to kill several PC's along the way and I am not a killer GM.
I hope the above made sense, I may have painted a slightly darker picture than actual play will provide but I am trying my best to align our expectations.
Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
