Burn should be part of the kineticist but is just a reusable "strain mind" like the psychic gets, but heightens your spell level instead of gives you an amp.
The effect is still the same. The mechanic is already part of the game. It's simple.
You cast Aerial Boomerang at level 1. You burn for 2d4 damage. (1d4 per level heighten. It's level +2). You take an avg of 5 damage to deal an additional 2d4 damage with your Boomerang.
You can be healed. This turns your life pool into damage potential and gives you a very good reason to have con as high as possible.

Burn was a really weird mechanic and in PF1 actually had the weird advantage that made it much more likely that you would be sent into a dying state than actually dying... so I personally do not miss it.
That said, some sort of strain might be fun ^^ though I am still surprised that this class did not end up using some sort of focus point mechanic for things.
