Can summoners let other people "borrow" their eidolons?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

They do whatever the summoner says, so could they just say "work for this guy for a week" or something?

Eidolons are smart enough to follow complex instructions so I would assume having the eidolon work for someone else is possible, but there would be differences.

For one the eidolon, as far as I can determine, has free will and while it obeys it's master there is no such magical bond with someone they are 'assigned' to so that may be a factor.

Also the eidolon does not exist when the summoner is asleep or unconscious so they would not be around for 'a week'. They would need to be re-acquired from the summoner on a a daily basis at best.

And of course whoever the Summoner assigns the service of their eidolon to would enjoy none of the class benefits the Summoner does with the eidolon.

An Eidolon could follow another PC (or NPC), sure... until Unfetter runs out. I don't think there's a more long-term way to remove the Life Link.

An Eidolon that moves more than 100' from the Summoner starts losing hit points. It isn't much of a loan if the borrower must stay within 100' of the Summoner.

There's the paracosmist which I think is 3rd party though its on the paizo site from Into the Breech.. If I remember right they don't dissapear when sleeping and can get further away without penalty 50% health at 1,000 feet and 25% at 10,000. Basically its an imaginary friend given pseudo-flesh not an external spirit/being.

The Exchange

You could always give another caster your eidolon's True Name and let him call the eidolon himself. Subject to the normal rules of whatever calling spell he uses. You might tick off your eidolon if he realizes you enabled Jerky McWizard catching him in a planar binding.

Plus the real risk to the eidolon (since it is called and not summoned).

That's assuming you know the Eidolon's true name in the first place, which is not necessarily the case.

Also the range limitation of the Eidolon just means that it has to be more careful about taking damage. It still has all its powers and ability that don't require it being close to the Summoner.

The range limitation says this:

Quote:
The conduit that allows your eidolon to manifest is also a tether between you. Your eidolon must remain within 100 feet of you at all times and can't willingly go beyond that limit. If forced beyond this distance, or if you are reduced to 0 Hit Points, your eidolon's physical form dissolves: your eidolon unmanifests, and you need to use Manifest Eidolon to manifest it again.

So, you can let someone borrow it, but they have to stay within 100ft of you.

Edit: F*!%, I was looking at 2nd edition rules.

Well, someone mentioned Unfetter, which lets them get farther away. The summoner could also use Extend Spell if it's too short for their taste.

Yep you were looking at wrong edition this is how PF1 summoner Life Link reads:
Quote:
In addition, the eidolon and the summoner must remain within 100 feet of one another for the eidolon to remain at full strength. If the eidolon is beyond 100 feet but closer than 1,000 feet, its current and maximum hit point totals are reduced by 50%. If the eidolon is more than 1,000 feet away but closer than 10,000 feet, its current and maximum hit point totals are reduced by 75%. If the eidolon is more than 10,000 feet away, it is immediately returned to its home plane.

Yeah, 1st edition eidolons can wander pretty far away as long as they aren't expected to do anything combat related.
