Ritual as a Service

Rules Discussion

Hi everyone.

What is the cost of a ritual as a NPC service? We have a Spellcasting Services in the CRB but Rituals are not exactly Spells. A ritual need more time and more than one person to perform it, and different skills... So, a Ritual must be more expensive than a Spellcasting Services, right?

For example, the 10 lvl PCs needs to Resurrect one of them. This is a 5th level Ritual. 1 day casting, 750 gp "normal cost". What will be the final price if they need an NPC (or 2-3 NPCs) to perform the ritual? It's a "earn income" price based, a Spellcasting Service price based... another solution?

Thank you in advance!

I would price it the same as any other spellcasting service. Just because it is easier that way. It isn't going to throw off the game balance mechanics.

To justify the similar cost: sure, it takes more time to cast a ritual than a spellcaster casting a 2 or 3 action spell. It also takes a lot less training and character build investment. Basically, since anyone can cast a ritual that they know, they can't charge as much for their time because of the increased competition. If one person or group is trying to overcharge for their ritual casting, then someone else will open a competing business.

If that still doesn't sit right with you, pick a different price. It is just in-game currency. If the players are falling behind in their equipment, you should probably adjust for that in their treasure allotment. So feel free to scalp them on the cost of Resurrection and then give them an exceptionally lucrative adventure to go on next. It will all work out in the end.

I'd go with breith's suggestion and price it along with other spells. Remember, costs are not there to simulate a realistic economy but to balance the power level of the players.

Personally I reskin most magic services as rituals. Sure the local priest can provide the magical services the party needs but they're ritual specialists, not spell casters. The rituals they know are tied to their specific stone circle/temple/church. This is why the aforementioned priest can provide potentially powerful magical services but can't join up with part to deal with x threat.
