Can you adjust a magical longbow into a magical shortbow using crafting feats?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Today in our game we came across a +1 shocking longbow. One of our party members suggested he might be able to craft it into a shortbow. I haven't been able to find anything about it. Has anyone come across any rules pertaining to something like this? Thanks.

The Exchange

Not directly. Crafting a weapon into a different type of weapon is not covered in Pathfinder rules.

If you have the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat you could add the greater transformative property to it and then command it to be a shortbow. However that would cost you 7,500 gp in materials. Buying a masterwork shortbow for 330 gp and then using crafting to make it a +1 shock shortbow would only cost 4,000 gp of materials.

Sort of, effectively but not actually. If we ignore the cost of the mundane MW weapon portion the sale price of the +1 shocking longbow (4,000 gp) is the same as the cost to enchant a +1 shocking shortbow (4000 gp). Just balance out the the mundane cost and bingo.

You could use the salvaging rules in ultimate wilderness to take apart the longbow and retrieve 2/3 of the crafting cost to craft a new +1 shocking shortbow...
