Weapon Prototype Proficiency (Ex) 1st Level
You gain proficiency in advanced melee weapons, heavy
weapons, or longarms. Once this choice is made, it can’t be
changed. Your weapon prototype must be a weapon of this type.

Does a mechanic who takes this class option gain specialization with the selected weapon type at 3rd level?

Yes, you gain specialization in any weapons you are proficient with through class features at 3rd level.

Weapon Specialization (Ex) 3rd Level

You gain the Weapon Specialization feat as a bonus feat for each weapon type this class grants you proficiency with.

RAW I wouldn't split a class feature from the class.

RAI you're supposed to be good with a prototype weapon. Your character is built around it. A feat tax to be specialized in it would be completely counter to that.

It's just strange that the exocortex calls out gaining longarm specialization at 3rd level, but the prototype weapon doesn't.

I presume it's an oversight in COM language.

That may be due to the Control Net 17th level class feature. Once you get that feature you can split levels between an exocortex and a drone. So you could have a 16th level drone and a 1st level exocortex, in which case you would not get Weapon Specialization with longarms even though you are proficient with them and have 17 mechanic levels.

I agree with this. You ought to get that specialization as part of the Experimental Weapon Prototype class feature.

Side note: Experimental Prototype replaces AI (Drone/Exocortex) so Control Net actually doesn't do anything for a mechanic with an experimental prototype.

Exo-Guardians

Did this ever get confirmed? I have not seen anything but I know paizo does podcasts and other things where they discuss rules and questions. I am mostly concerned with SFS play. I want to make sure my character is legal.
