No news on Death yet, though.
They're two months into filming already. Hopefully they might squeeze it out this year, but 2022 is more likely.
Death is the one I'm waiting for. No, not like that. Not that either. Been a long time since I read those.

Is the ancestor of John Constantine replacing him in the series?
I read somewhere they’re sort of combining the two characters. I guess that makes things a bit easier for them, since it cuts down the number of actors you have to pay by one. And, as I recall, John was only featured in one issue, early on in the series.
I'm disinclined to think that Martian Manhunter (of any kind) will show. That being said I do think they are combining John and his ancestor into one character.

Instead of John Constantine, they're using Joanna Constantine (whom I think is a new creation for this series). Joanna is an ancestor of Johanna, and both will be played by the same actor.
In ANY case, it's not John, just his ancestor.
It is John, kind of. The character of John Constantine was unavailable due to issues with The CW sell-off and an upcoming Hellblazer project that's in development somewhere else, so they changed it to Jenna Coleman playing both a version of Johanna Constantine in the past and her female descendant in the modern day.
I guess A-zombie is right. It does seem that DC has trouble sharing its IP with more than one network.

It looks exceptionally good. Some comic panel images brought straight to life there. The Corinthian looks properly disturbing and Desire's Castle is straight out of the comics. And Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer is brilliant.
It looks to be a very good series.

Four episodes in and I think they pretty much nailed it. The changes are mostly logical, although I was worried. Having The Corinthian around as a villain in almost every episode feels like an error like over-exposing Vicious in Cowboy Bebop, but here it works because they organically intertwine the Corinthian with other characters and even helps explain a few incongruities from the original comics (humans trying to imprison the Endless with basic magic must have happened before and they were able to overcome it, but the Corinthian's insider info gives Burgess an edge). It also helps that Boyd Holbrook is cast to perfection as the Corinthian, whilst that other guy as Vicious was horribly miscast.
The trip to Hell was the comic come to life, Johanna Constantine works fine as a replacement for Sir Not-Appearing-in-this-Series John (thanks to legal issues with The CW's use of the character), and David Thewliss's calm performance as John Dee is far more terrifying than either the comic book version or the Corinthian.
If I did have one complaint it's that Patton Oswalt's voice as Matthew is a bit too distracting, even if you didn't recognise him. It feels like the only bit of high-profile casting that feels incongruous.
The next episode (105) is 24/7, which a couple of reviews have already called the best hour of television this year, which seems like high praise, and then 106 is The Sound of Her Wings.
I'm saving this for when I have time to binge. But so far, reviews and such (plus a few clips) make me want to watch this all the way through.

It’s…..adequate. It would have been better if they had stuck closer to the comics, but this is Hollywood.
I’m a few episodes into it. I think the last episode I watched was his trip to hell. That was disappointing. No Etrigan. No Beelzebub. No Azazel. And they screwed up the “battle” by making it against Lucifer instead of Choronzon.
I was bummed they only focused on Unity Kincaid. I know she’s more essential to the story, but it would have been cool to see the others.
I loved the cat scene, but the punishment should have been Eternal Waking. That would have been much cooler.
The set up and meeting with the Fates was kick ass.
I’m typically not a fan of expanding character roles. It worked well here with The Corinthian. Not so much with Ethel and Lucien. I also thought the stuff with the ravens was idiotic, making it seem he’s dependent on them. I’m assuming they inserted that to stroke Oswalt’s ego and give him more to do.
The crap with Gregory was pointless and unnecessary. They should have stuck to the comic and made it the brothers’ letters of commission. With the way they did this, he could have just absorbed Lucien as well.
I’m super bummed they left out Martian Manhunter and Scott Free. I would have loved to see Dream as Lord L’Zoril.
As for casting - the dude playing Morpheus is nearly perfect. Cain and Abel are decent enough, though Cain could be played as more antagonistic. Boyd Holbrook is pretty much perfect as The Corinthian. Charles Dance was great. David Thewlis was great. The chick playing Johanna Constantine did a good job. Gwendoline Christie did an adequate job as Lucifer (although I wish they could have gone back in time and gotten a much younger Charles Dance for that role).

It's worth noting they only have the rights to THE SANDMAN and not any other DC characters, so characters originated in SANDMAN they can use but not in earlier DC properties. So no Martian Manhunter, no Scott Free, no Batman or Superman, no OG Sandman, no Arkham Asylum. They can use John Dee, but they can't invoke his alter-ego of Doctor Destiny. They can use Johanna Constantine, as she first appeared in SANDMAN, but not John Constantine.

The episode with Death and Hob Gadling was mostly spot on. They did make some silly changes (like swapping out the comedian for the guy at the beach). Death seemed…a little off. I always had the impression she was a bit more playful (that might not be the right word). Maybe if she’d done Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
The Doll’s House story line is….a lot different. They’re at least keeping the essentials, though. I’ve got two episodes to go, but I wish there was more Gilbert. Waste of a good actor.
I liked some of the DC callouts. Hector and Lyta (which I guess means they plan to end the series with Daniel). I loved the various DC villains up on the screen. Some of that art seemed familiar (Byrne maybe?). I saw Pied Piper, of course, and Captain Cold. I didn’t catch who the others were. I liked the little touches - like the action figures (or maybe statues) of The Flash and Wonder Woman in the background. I think having the kid appear in the old Sandman costume might actually work better than the way it was done in the comics.
I was bummed they didn’t have Brute and Glob, but I can understand consolidating and only needing one person.

Just realized my autocorrect did me dirty. My comment on the Doll’s House story should have been “a little different”. I think if they hadn’t felt the need to make The Corinthian a kind of big bad for the season, it would have been even more spot on.
There’s a good bit of dialogue, I’m noticing, which seems lifted word for word (or nearly so) from the comics. Which is cool, since that writing was so damned good. Sadly, they still cut out a lot, but that’s the way it goes with adaptations.
Also, I hope I’m as spry as great-grandmother Unity when I’m over 100 years old.

Finally finished it up last night. The showdown with the Corinthian was …..meh. I didn’t like that Morpheus had to rely on Rose to beat him. It takes away from the main character. The eventual showdown over the Vortex was pretty spot on, though.
Loved seeing Azazel at the end. They did the character really well.
Overall, the show was decent. They stuck as close as possible to the story. I think it could have been better, if they’d stuck closer to the comics. The cast was great. The visuals were pretty solid.
I look forward to season 2.
I have to say Lucifer was done spectacularly. that whole episode was really nicely done but that moment near the end, that barely concealed Agony, as Dream mentions Heaven, I thought that moment was very very good

Just finished watching the episode. Both stories were almost perfectly adapted (they did tone down the Calliope story a bit). I enjoyed the episode immensely.
Dream of a Thousand Cats was animated, with a pretty decent voice cast (including Gaiman himself). The animation style was great.
The casting for Calliope was excellent. They brought in the incredible Derek Jacobi to play the role of Erasmus Fry. He was, of course, magnificent. I’m unfamiliar with the dude they got to play Richard Maddoc, but I think he was on Doctor Who. The chick they got to play Calliope was actually part Greek.
I finally was able to finish this over the weekend. I read the comics in the late 90s, and I've re-read it probably only a couple times since then, so it's hard for me to immediately pick out what's changed vs. what I'm just not remembering. So, that aside, I enjoyed it immensely. It's interesting to me how much of a 90s vibe I'm picking up from some of the scenes and how modern contrivances blend into the show. Maybe my subconscious is projecting the 90s onto the show, but that's definitely the lens I had to watch it through.
For example, every single person in the boarding house (including Unity) just screams 90s to me (with the exception maybe of Ken's man bun). But then Unity whips out her smart phone while in the car...
Putting all that aside, I liked everyone's performance. I felt like the characters were portrayed well, although I would like to learn why they replaced Brute and Glob with Gault. No issue, but I am curious.
I am hoping for as second season!
