Shakalta character creation

So I am wanting to build a Shakalta and understand that it is a dual classed character, though unsure if it works similar to a regular multi-class character, do you start with a single class between the two or do you start with two level 1 classes?

The first class at level 1, then the second class at level 2. You then take a level of the first class at every odd level, and the second class at every even level.

What Garretmander said, though you aren't limited to every other level like that. As long as both are even the next level can be either one while the level after that has to be the other.

I'm playing one in Dead Suns. Mystic/Solarian. When I was 4th level they were even. I had planned on taking 5th lvl as Solarian but we needed more healing so I took my 5th lvl in Mystic. You just have to keep them even.
