Help me make a gambler

*Disclaimer I am not looking for help with a build

I want to run a character that is a gambler as in personality wise, and I am struggling with coming up with something unique for them.

I have considered all the "harrow card" archetypes but that didn't give me the spark of creativity I was after.

I don't want the gambling aspect of the character to be entirely void of anything else but struggling with trying to think of that "X factor" that creates a creative character.

My only ideas I vaguely think are decent is a Deep Gnome Evangelist Cleric of Nivi Rhombodazzle who inspires people by placing bets on/with people mid combat. The other a Witch who rolls snake eyes etc to hex people (No idea how to reflavour cackle yet)

I am really not fussed about what class.

What cool/unique ideas do you have for a gambler character?

I'd start with the general mindset: IMO a gambler is someone who goes for options with high risk and high reward. They might sell their soul to a devil or use a rod of wonders, but wouldn't jump out of a window blindly for no reason. If they would be pursued however, they would jump without hesitation.

Some related themes are addiction (gambler could have a hard time to resist some kinds of gambles), games (gambler might be expert in a dice game, for example), debts (sometimes gambling goes wrong and you better run) and secret stashes (sometimes gambling works out). Family, friends etc. might have a strong opinion towards the gambling - being worried, fascinated or given up on the topic. An unique straw could come from any of this.

Keep in mind: A gambler's mindset is very different from the mindset of a player who prefers everything being under control. The more you are the latter, the more you might need additional tools to stay in-character. Like a list of what your PC would do and wouldn't.

If you want to cheat, the aether kineticist has telekinetic finesse for ranged sleight of hand. Hide a card up your opponent's sleeve and then call him on it. You can also attack with dice and cards or whatever.

Gambling and luck kinda go hand in hand... an Archeologist Bard or Sleuth Investigator, maybe?

Keeping with Gnome, you could dip Experimental Gunsmith, and grab the Secret Stash Deed feat... which also gives you a +4 on Sleight of Hand whilst gambling. Experimental Gunsmith stacks with Maverick, which gets you:

Stacked Deck (Ex): At 1st level, the maverick can spend 1 grit point when she attempts a Bluff, Profession (gambler), or Sleight of Hand check to roll 1d6 and add the result to the check. She can do this after she rolls the check but before the result is revealed. If the result of the d6 roll is a natural 6, she rolls another 1d6 and adds it to the check. She can continue to do this as long as she rolls natural 6s, up to a number of times equal to her Wisdom modifier (minimum 1).

This deed replaces the gunslinger’s dodge deed.

Are you looking to make your own Luck mechanic and give it to a character/class that you build?

A gambler who's placed one bad bet too many might end up as a dual cursed oracle. They also get a couple of revelations which mess with luck.

An Oracle of some sort had crossed my mind but I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of the time mystery being a good fit as is the Divine Numerologist archetype

And being based off Cha helps with the idea. Divine numerologist combined with dual-cursed is iffy though, and steals most of your revelations if it does work; choose one or the other IMO.

Legalistic is the obvious curse to go for (gambling with devils and not reading all the fine print) but others are possible.

Psychic Searcher Lore Oracle with the Legalistic curse

That works too. Between inspiration and the legalistic curse you can be pretty good with skills, especially at diplomacy and sense motive. Only modestly better at bluff which might be of more interest to a gambler but you're still going to have Cha to the moon and back as a lore oracle I expect.

Depending on how random you're willing to be, you could embrace the idea of the roulette wheel. Different types of weapons or spells, spin to see what you prepare or draw. Maybe reflavor a bag of holding or other magical storage device as such.

I like your idea of buffs and debuffs, or boons and hexes, as bets placed on characters.

You could also pursue the coin flip mechanic. Think Two Face, but create and explore your own dichotomy.

Make bets with your travel companions about different types of encounters; combat, skill, or social. Hold yourself to commit to certain actions, whether the bet goes your way or not. Obviously nothing derailing or suicidal.

Find the line. What's the one thing you won't gamble ? Is it a silly thing, something pragmatic, or intensely personal? Possible background or story hooks there.

if your not above 'light' cheating when you gamble (with dice). you might want to look at this hat. also great for bards\enchanters

There are many different types of characters that gamble.

My idea for a gambler character is the strategic, abiding, and professional. He sets contracts on the unknown, pays his obligations, and expects payment when he wins. He would be an intelligence based character that has some charisma to sell contracts. She might be a wealthy heiress who enjoys the strategy of figuring out the odds of chance. It may be a crime boss who looks for an in to enslaving help. The games the character plays in and the bets that are made are based on logic and the probability of winning.

Good luck on your character and it would be cool if you post it as an alias when it's worked out!

Gamblers tend to gamble for the gamble itself, taking risks for the emotional high and thinking of losses as an acceptable risk. They should be very justice minded, though without the somber pastiche of a typical lawful character, they want there to be risk so cheating or being cheated are out of the question.

I think a Daring Champion Cavalier/Warrior Poet Samurai, with the order of the flame would work nicely. You issue your challenge as a wager, and go double or nothing for your glorious challenge.

Grand Lodge

Gamblers get a high from gambling. They actually get more high from loosing than winning.
I think ErichAD is right, that they won't cheat... BUT it would be more fun to go around and give long odds and then work, cheat, influence away to avoid loosing those bets.
And be charming, be convincing, lighten the moods, start the party and find a wingman.
And owe money/favors to powerfull people - GM's loves that!!!
- And desperat people tend to cheat more.

Halflings have a lot of luck features, traits, and options that would make them good gambler characters.

I am not a gambler. However, a lot of real gamblers--and by "real" I mean those who consistently make money at it--are very cold and calculated about the risks they take. They are excellent at figuring their chances of success and--if they play cards--are also very good at Sense Motive. You could play to that.
