Casting For Non-Casting Classes

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

What non-casting classes would like to see get casting and what would you give up for that casting? Also what magic type/spell-list would give those classes?

4th level for martial classes and 6th level for non-casting classes.

I would give up sneak attack for rogues for 6th level casting(arcane or psychic). Though I am not sure what else I would give up.

Every class should have access to at least an archetype offering 4th level casting. Peobably just give it to all the non casting classes... without taking anything away from them, at all.

I, personally, think all the 4th level casting lists should be combined and used for all 4th level casters. Full CL, Medium (the class) Spells known/per day, knack/cantrips/orisions...

As a vanilla rogue from the Core book, I could see giving up sneak attack, rogue talents, uncanny dodge (and improved), trapfinding, evasion (and improved), advanced talents, trap sense, and master strike, go down to, say, 1/2 BAB, d6 HD and 2 class skills +Int/level, in exchange for full arcane casting. Maybe you could sweeten the pot wit, say, an arcane bond, Scribe Scroll as a free feat at level 1, free feats at level 5, 10, 15, and 20 to be used for either Item Creation or Metamagic feats, the opportunity to specialize in a school of magic, and maybe, like... a spellbook I could write spells in?

Why re-invent the wheel? There are already a fighter archetype that prepares spells using the bloodrager list (Child of Acavna and Amaznen) and a rogue archetype that prepares spells using the wizard list (Eldritch Scoundrel, with spell slots as Magus).

I think they were both in the Arcane Anthology Player Companion.

Yeah, but what would you have to give up for each class. For example the Fighter, how many bonus feats would you give up? or maybe armor and/or weapon training?

None. Nothing.

Just give them all 4th level casting without taking anything away.

The game would be better because of it.

Look them up at aonprd.com.

Unfortunately, I can't link to them at the moment.

Some existing ones to look at that others mentioned:

Child of Acavna and Amaznen fighter archetype that gives 4 level casting

Eldritch Scoundrel rogue archetype that gives 6 level casting

There's also Item mastery feats which anyone can take to get some spell-like abilities.

That fighter archetype loses half their bonus feats, weapon training, and some proficiencies for an extra 2 skill points per level, and 4 level spellcasting. It's a bit too much to give up for only 4 level spelcasting imo.

The rogue one gives up half their sneak attack progression, half their talents, and uncanny dodge.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Y'know what'd be cool? If every class had some at-will and daily powers, some of which were supernatural, regardless of the type of class. For example if fighters had a kind of blade-ki ability usable 1/day. But then you'd need a mechanic to refresh some of these powers. Maybe, a short or long rest?

If you want every class to have magic powers on top of their existing class stuff, maybe try D&D 4e

Personally I like fighters just being fighters in PF 1e. I ALSO like how easy it is to multiclass or just dip into a class or two, as VM has advocated in SO many threads now.

If I want a rogue that casts spells, I'll pick the Eldritch Scoundrel... or I'll pick a rogue that dips into Magus, or a rogue with the Minor Magic and Major Magic talents as well as the Item Mastery feats.

I'll make my build decisions to snap-on whatever abilities I want, and thus remove some higher abilities by virtue of these choices. I don't need every rogue to be a 4th level caster.
