Hi everyone,
I have taken a look at the spell and I am confused about what "transform the target creature into a harmless animal" really means from a rules standpoint.
Usually when a polymorph spell changes your numbers, it does say so in the description.
The failure line talks about changing only the target's body, and the critical failure changes both body and mind. But it doesn't tell you how to calculate those.
So if an enemy turns your character into a squirrel because you roll a failure or critical failure, do you keep your AC, saves, HP.. values? How do you apply the effects of this spell?
Thank you!
Baleful Polymorph Spell 6
Incapacitation Polymorph Transmutation
Source Core Rulebook pg. 320 1.1
Traditions arcane, primal
Bloodline hag
Deities Mother Vulture, The Lantern King
Cast Two Actions somatic, verbal
Range 30 feet; Targets 1 creature
Saving Throw Fortitude; Duration varies
You transform the target creature into a harmless animal appropriate to the area, with effects based on its Fortitude save.
Critical Success The target is unaffected.
Success The target's body gains minor features of the harmless animal. Its insides churn as they partially transform, causing it to be sickened 1. When it recovers from the sickened condition, its features revert to normal.
Failure The target transforms for 1 minute but keeps its mind. If it spends all its actions on its turn concentrating on its original form, it can attempt a Will save to end the effect immediately.
Critical Failure The target is transformed into the chosen harmless animal, body and mind, for an unlimited duration.

Well, you definitely lose all ability to attack or take offensive actions, otherwise you wouldn't be harmless. Beyond that it is unclear. I like the suggestion I've seen to use Pest Form's given stats for Tiny critters. Of course, those won't tell you what to do with the HP. It would be easiest to leave the HP intact, so that you don't have to worry about how to convert it back if they take some damage while polymorphed but survive, but a super-tough mouse could be annoying to the players. <shrug>

What stops me from interpreting it as: "it turns into a slug, I squash it. I win."
Nothing. Its your campaign. Interpret it as you wish.
Why would this spell be different than any other that can potentially kill an opponent. Think of it this way, "I cast <enter spell here*>. You fail a save. You die. I win."
*devour life, disintegrate, phantasmal killer, feeblemind (effectively), finger of death, massacre, power word kill, etc.

No. You can stalk the FAQ looking for errata like the rest of us for all of our various questions and concerns.
Also, did you really need to necrobump two separate threads for this?
Is it against forum rules to ask the same thing in different threads, that both concern the same argument that I am asking about?

I'm just not sure what the point is. Is one not sufficient? Are you hoping for different answers from different responders?
