My players critical failed a ressurection ritual..

Advice

At lvl 13.
What do you think should happen when they try to steal a soul back from Asmodeus and fail like that?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

The PC's body comes back to life, and they continue adventuring like normal.

....up until the PC betrays the party at a critical moment, likely when they are in reach of a powerful macguffin.

in this case, you should cooperate with the player to plan out this plot point. Was the player replaced with a puppet? Did Asmodeus offer him a deal that was too tempting to refuse? You decide.

Do they know they crit failed?

the body is processed by a devil for sure

I am with Lemeres, have the body seem to resurrect but be possessed by demon. Allow it to have access to original character's memories, so it can impersonate them reasonably well, but at some point the demonic agenda will surface. Maybe fair to allow some Sense Motive checks along the way to figure out something is off, which doesn't necessarily reveal the full situation. If you feel like it, you could set up specific way they can really get their friend back.

Alternatevely the character is just soulless

the body lives and has it's memories but no emotions
It might pretend to have emotions but is ultimately calculating and unable to show compassion

I approve of going full pet cemetery with it as well.

That could be an interesting way to deconstruct the character's background and motivations. While emotions are important (y'know- for not brutally torturing people with emotionless calculation), they can also focus you on certain details while making you lose sight of the bigger picture.

What if this character was focused solely on revenge (ex- prince whose parents were killed by the leader of rebel nobles), but that revenge was not actually a pretty good idea (ex-his parents were kind of jerks, the rebels kinda had a point).

The experience could force them reexamine their motivations (ex- the rebel leader is also secretly kind of a jerk, for example, planning to sacrifice the nation's citizens to devils). This could be a source of character growth that causes them to head towards the same goal, but for much better reasons.

While that does spoil things a bit, it is also nice for suspense and dramatic irony. The PLAYERS know that the resurrection when horribly wrong, but the CHARACTERS might not realize that.

So the players will have to sit and wait for the inevitable surprise you will spring on them.

All devil contracts have a clause of "the victim can’t be restored to life except by wish or similar magic" or "where it is bound for eternity and unable to be raised or resurrected except by wish or similar magic"

Personally I would have a devil inhabit the body as a npc and let the players deal with the consequences of dealing with Asmodeus. Whether that is with a new story arc or a contract the new devil provides.

If the player wishes to play the posessing devil then I would need to have them choose a backstory for their original lower tier devil and do some reading so they could roleplay it correctly.
