Nanocyte Class

Silver Crusade

How would you deal with a Nanocyte gobbling up a high level item that you would normally not be able to buy?

There are several scenarios where an item appears on the sheet that is at least 4 levels higher than the party level for that tier.

This is no problem during the playtest as you generate a new character each session, aside from one problem, the item is still consumed.

During full society play, how would purchasing interact with the Nanocyte?

If a level 10 Nanocyte consumes let's say, a level 14 weapon during the session ;
1.would they have to buy that weapon at the end of a scenario while that normally would not be allowed?

2.would they be allowed to spit the weapon back out at the end of the adventure?

3.would they not be allowed to consume that item at all?

Furthermore, would a consumed item be deleted from the chronicle sheet?

Presumably, a consumed item should be treated the same as a consumable that gets used up.

My guess is that, if this iteration of investments makes it to the final version, we will have to invest with gear we buy ourselves. There is no other way to keep track of it fairly.

I'm hoping that they go with a different way to make the power work, though.

You can't break down items more than 1 level above you, so the level 14 item shouldn't be an issue.

One solution to the Society issue would be to say "You can invest items you buy between scenarios. If you want to invest an item mid-scenario, it must be something you can normally purchase, and you must purchase the item at the end of the scenario."

Is that true? My read was that you could only MAKE things one level above you, but you could scarf down anything technological.

Nanite Investment: The equipment you can create with your gear array is limited in part by your investment of raw material into your nanites, in the form of universal polymer bases (UPBs; Starfinder Core Rulebook 233). This is a numerical value called your nanite investment, and it starts at 0 when you gain your first nanocyte level. You can spend an hour using your nanites to break down an unattended weapon or technological item (with a maximum level equal to or lower than your nanocyte level plus 1) into component UPBs that you can then invest in your nanites. When you do, your nanite investment becomes equal to that item’s price. During this hour, you can also add additional UPBs equal to 10% of the item’s price to increase your nanite investment by that amount.

Huh, I guess I missed that. Good to know.

It does beg the question, though, why you're allowed (expected?) to make items at your current level+1, when you're limited to investments made when at your level-1. I guess it lets you buy higher level tech items?
