Thought exercise: An all Adventure Pack party?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

There are all kinds of challenges. I like build challenges myself.

Your challenge should you choose to except it is to build the best party you can with the following restrictions.

1. A sanctioned run of the CotCT AP with all scenarios completed and all characters alive by the end. This means 1 character will be Batm... I mean Blackjack.
2. 4 players each choosing a different character from either the Core set or CotCT set.
3. Each character will be built using 3 Adventurer's Packs.
4. Each Pack must be used at least once.

Would be a fun idea, though maybe not too different from playing non-PACS style, just a bit more restricted in the cards you get to keep between scenarios.

What about an additional restriction saying no pack can be used more than once?

That would be hard to manage with a 4-character party each built using 3 packs ...

I think a good starting point would be deciding who would get to use the more obscure packs.

For example assigning Alchemy to Valeros might not be a total waste but you really want to use Fumbus or Quinn. And Quinn could make good use of the Finesse deck.

Nature is ideal for a divine caster with Survival. Lini is your only option for both. And she is a good choice for the Divine pack.

For Arcane I think you want Ezran or Seoni. And Quinn has Int covered.

That leaves both Smash and Tank unclaimed. I think Support and Occult will get claimed by the casters so Seelah is out of luck. Valeros starts with Armor proficiency.

Who would get Ranged though? If we replace Quinn with Fumbus that leaves no good takers for the Finesse Pack.

I built five two-pack characters for demoing Adventurer's Packs.
This was at a con shortly after they had been announced.

The characters and pack assignments were:

Harsk: Ranged + Nature
Kyra: Divine + Occult
Merisiel: Finesse + Alchemy
Seoni: Arcane + Support
Valeros: Smash + Tank

They didn't get used for anything other that level 1 scenarios, but they all seemed to work reasonably well.

It might be interesting to try building a party using Fumbus, Hakon, Kess, Quinn & Varian, and see how good a set of builds you can get.

If a decent 4 member party composition is found I'll test it out by running them through the CotCT AP solo.

I think I have a decent starting point.

Lini
Nature
Divine
Occult

Hakon
Smash
Support
Tank

Fumbus
Ranged
Alchemy
???

Varian
Arcane
Finesse
???

With either Hakon or Fumbus as Blackjack.

An alternate party could be Quinn with Finesse and Alchemy but your 4th party member would need to be an arcane caster and that leaves Ranged underutilized.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

There is one secret trick to making this work: share a pack between two characters who want it for very different things / are willing to make it work, so that they never overlap cards in play.

Ex:

Lini
Nature
Divine
Ranged*

Hakon
Smash
Support*
Tank

Fumbus
Ranged*
Alchemy
Occult

Varian
Arcane
Finesse
Support*

Not bad. I'm not sure what Lini would be getting out of ranged. I figured Occult would be a good choice due to: Items that add to her perception, Charm Person since she is racharging her animal allies, Leech, and Headband of Mental Superiority adding to her Survival and spellcasting.

She doesn't have much need of the weapons, though it's not like Deathbane Light Crossbow or Sling are bad for her. Thankfully, Fumbus is most interested in the weapons from Ranged.

She might like Moon Maiden Armor and many of the items like Ring of Evasion, Brooch of Protection, and Ring of Resistance. Allies like Crow and Raccoon are pretty great for her, and she might even enjoy a Skoan-Quah Boneslayer who adds to Survival checks.

She'd definitely be interested in several of the blessings, though. I'd cheerfully use any of The Cyclone, The Twin, The Uprising, The Vision, The Winged Serpent, and Achaekek's Claws. Old Deadeye and Savored Sting alone might be worthwhile for a 3rd deck consideration, though. Not like she needs much after Nature + Divine.

Though I'd also consider swapping Divine with Hakon for Support. I was trying to change up your list as little as possible though :)

I'm working a somewhat similar problem at present.

I'm trying to put together a PACS-legal party of the four We Be Heroes! Goblins, using partial Adventurer's Packs (made with only Core cards).

It looks as though it's going to be possible - Siathorn is fairly straightforward (Divine+Nature+Occult), and Pizazz isn't too difficult (Arcane+Finesse+????). Crimsi is almost certainly going to be Ranged+Alchemy+????. Grenek is more of a problem; Smash+Tank for a start, but I keep wanting one or two cards from several other packs!
